Secret Garden Apothecary Rose Gin 500ML Tasting Notes Nose: It has very pleasant and lovely aromas. Palate: Potpourri, Turkish delight, a hint of brown sugar and soft angelica. Finish: Quite delicate and smooth texture on the long finish. Distillery Information In 2012, Hamish Martin acquired a plot of land on the outskirts of Edinburgh. With over 30 years of experience in the drinks trade and a herbology diploma, Martin began to experiment with creating his own gins. In doing so, he discovered a natural reaction completely caused by mother nature, and that was a natural colour change! However, it wasn’t until Steve Ross joined the group as a volunteer in 2016 to learn more about the powers of herbs. Steve owned a successful bar in South London, and had already spent two decades working within the events industry and as a mixologist. With the combined experience of Martin and Ross, Old Curiosity Distillery was officially launched in 2017. The Secret Herb Garden has over 600 naturally grown and tendered varieties of herbs and the UKs biggest crop of apothecary roses and 2,000 juniper bushes to make the colour changing gins. Not a single chemical is used in the tending of the garden. In 2021, the Old Curiosity Distillery changed its name to the Secret Garden Distillery and appointed a new managing director, André de Almeida.

Utilising their experience of using and experimentating with various different yeast strains, Nikka fermented this batch of whisky at a low temperature for a particularly estery character said to be akin to a fine daiginjo sake. Yoichi Aromatic Yeast - Nikka Discovery 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Fine, distinguished. On the first nose, a herbaceous, salty and empyreumatic (sleet) peat clearly dominates. Allowed to breathe, it makes way for fruits (apple, pear, Canary melon), flowers (lily, carnation) and mint, all of which bring lots of momentum to the aroma palette. Gradually, it becomes increasingly milky (cream, coconut), exotic (pineapple, yellow kiwi) and medicinal (ointment, Arnica). Palate: Firm, lively. Giving its own take on the herbaceous, salty and empyreumatic register of the first nose, the attack also evokes a field of barley swept with sea spray. The more earthy and rooted mid-palate pours blocks of peat onto the tongue. The floral (tulip, cyclamen) and fruity (Mirabelle plum, greengage plum) end of the palate is also rustic and marine. Finish: Long, crisp. Unexpectedly, the start of the finish invites us to bite joyfully into whole bunches of white grapes. Flavours of plum and pulp bring lots of smoothness to the end of the palate. On the retro-nasal olfaction, evoking an evanescent peat, a fine layer of liquorice delicately coats the taste buds. The empty glass releases wisps of translucent smoke. Distillery Information The Yoichi distillery (formerly known as the Hokkaido distillery) was the first of Nikka’s distilleries, founded by the great Masataka Taketsuru back in 1934. These strains are closely protected, and it's great to see a couple of releases highlighting their contribution - the other being the peated Yoichi Aromatic Yeast from Nikka's other malt whisky distillery. Miyagikyo Aromatic Yeast - Nikka Discovery 700ML Tasting Notes Nose: Refined, full of ardour. The very exuberant first nose (lavender, marshmallow, marsh mallow plant) is also softly liquoricey and lush (malted barley). Allowed to breathe, succulent perfumes of comté cheese, flowering meadow, and fruits (peach, pear, apricot) intensely take hold of the olfactory arena. Palate: Radiant, well-balanced. The full-bodied attack is at first refreshingly herbaceous (barley field, fern). Very delicately, the mid-palate then becomes wonderfully rich (brioche, leavened baguette). Finish: Long, silky. Closely linked to the end of the palate, incredibly fresh flavours of herbal tea (sage, camomile, verbena) cross through the start of the finish. Distillery Information Miyagikyo distillery, formerly Sendai and Sakunami, was founded in 1969 as Nikka’s second distillery after the celebrated Yoichi on Hokkaido. As with Yoichi thirty-four years earlier, Miyagikyo was the brainchild of the great Masataka Taketsuru. Supposedly he stumbled upon the picturesque location by chance, instantly realising its potential as a prime spot for whisky production. The distillery has eight pot stills and two pairs of Coffey stills making its capacity more than double that of its more famous elder brother. Award winning in their own right, Miyagikyo’s whiskies are softer than those made at Yoichi making them vital for a number of Nikka products.
