Similar to Robert Baratheon ruling the Seven Kingdoms upon the Iron Throne, Royal Lochnagar was deemed a whisky worthy of a royal family as it was granted a Royal Warrant after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited the distillery in 1848. Balanced with delicate fruits and spices, this taste of royalty is best enjoyed neat. Light notes of oak and sweet liquorice that develops into a rich, creamy vanilla coffee and finishes with a mild nutmeg custard note. These iconic whiskies serve as must-have collectibles for Game of Thrones and whisky adorers. Distillery Information Everything about the plant, especially its two small stills and worm tubs, point to this being a classic, ‘heavy’ 19th century site. Instead, its distilling team work to make it ‘light’. The wort – from a rake and plough mash tun – manages to be clear (which is not easy to achieve). Ferments are long, but it is the way in which the stills and worms are utilised which makes the difference.Distillation is slow to maximise reflux and the stills’ doors are opened after distillation to allow air in to rejuvenate the copper. Meanwhile, the worm tubs are run warm. All of this maximises copper conversation and produces a new make with the aroma of dry grass, a background of fruit and mid-palate depth. He was born in 1724 in Cork but left Ireland at the age of 20 as part of the ‘Wild Geese’ generation of Irish Catholics to fight for France against Britain. Hennessy arrived in France at the age of just 20. According to one story, he was injured at the battle of Fontenoy in 1745 in present day Belgium during the War of Spanish Succession. Later he settled on the banks of the Charente River, near the town of Cognac. In 1765, he went into the brandy business with two partners and the help of loans from Parisian banks. He married a local woman called Helene and had a son called Jacques, or James as he was also known. It was James Hennessy who turned his father’s brandy business into an international concern. His choice of wife was a canny one, Martine Martell, who he married in 1795. She was the daughter of Jean Martell, a British, or sort of British, he was from Guernsey, Cognac merchant. Hennessy began exporting to the US, the first shipment arrived in New York in 1794. Richard Hennessy died in 1800. In 1804, the firm took the big step of exporting in glass bottles rather than barrels. This meant that Hennessy had full control of the product from grape to the customer’s glass so that adulteration and outright counterfeiting were much harder. In 1806 Jean Fillioux was appointed master blend. Amazingly enough eight generations later his descendant Renaud Fillioux de Gironde is Hennessy’s master blender - a bit of almost unprecedented continuity in the Cognac industry. An unprecedented step that for the first time a non-champagne house is allowed to sparkle on the Formula 1 podium and also a reward that beautiful Italian Spumantes (often made from the same grape and an equivalent Terroir) can be of equal quality (or higher) than their French counterparts. This set is a must-have for every Wine and Formula 1 enthusiast. Like the other Ferrari wines, it is made exclusively from Chardonnay, harvested from vineyards at an altitude of between 300 - 700 meters with exposure to the southeast to southwest, so nicely located in the afternoon sun. The Special Edition Formula 1 is therefore also a Blanc de Blanc. Yields are kept limited and the grapes are harvested by hand in September. To make a really nice quality, only the first part of the pressing is used, the rest would give too much vegetality and sharpness. The bottle fermentation lasts no less than three years to create a perfect mousse. A delicious glass, nicely balanced, soft, with a wonderful length and nice acidity.
