Producer: Bodegas Lustau Vintage: NV Size: 750ml ABV: 20% Varietal: Palomino Country/Region: Spain, Andalucia This dry Amontillado acquires a genuine, rich and nutty flavor through years of aging. Amber in color, with hazelnut aromas on the nose. Light, soft and round on the palate, with a long aftertaste. Producer Information Bodegas Lustau is a famous Sherry producer in Andalucia and is arguably the most recognized fortified wine producer in the world. It was was founded in 1896 by José Ruiz-Berdejo as an almacenista, which also grew its own vines. Almacenistas generally bought young wine (Ruiz made his own) and matured them in their own soleras, before selling them to larger houses, who would either blend it with older wine, or mature it longer in their larger soleras. It wasn't until the 1950s that Ruiz's son-in-law Emilio Lustau Ortega began bottling and exporting his own wine. Now based in Jerez, Lustau is the only winery that has sites in all three cities of the Sherry triangle: Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Lustau buys fruit from vineyards, while also maintaining two of its own. The first is the Montegilillo vineyard, which is on the white limestone albariza soil local to the region. The second is the Las Cruces vineyard, which is on sandy coastal soils. Lustau now produces a range of Sherry, but achieves the most recognition for its Almacenista collection. Continuing the tradition, the collection is series of single offerings from smaller producers that Lustau bottles and distributes. The style of the local producer is maintained and their name is featured on the bottle.

Producer: Bodegas Alvear Vintage: 1910 Size: 375ml ABV: 15% Varietal: Pedro Ximenez Country/Region: Spain, Montilla-Moriles Solera 1910 starts with notes of molasses, honey, oak spice (vanilla bean, nutmeg, and cinnamon), and dried black fruits (fig, prune, and raisin). The finish melts into rich notes of mocha, demerara sugar, and espresso. Producer Information Bodegas Alvear is one of the largest and best-known producers in Andalucia, in southern Spain. It was built in 1729 by Diego de Alvear y Escalera in what is now the Montilla-Moriles DO, and its wines are competitive even with the great sherry producers of Jerez. The winery's success came out of a contract Diego won to ship wine to England in the late 18th Century, and today 40 percent of Alvear's production is for the international market. The estate owns a number of vineyards in Montilla-Moriles and buys fruit from other producers in the region. Located south of the city of Córdoba, Montilla-Moriles is most famous for wines similar stylistically to sherry (the classic Amontillado style of Sherry actually means "in the style of Montilla"). Pedro Ximénez (often dubbed "PX") is more commonly used in Montilla-Moriles than Palomino (which is predominant in Jerez). The solera system is still used to age the wines, often under a flor. Across its multiple properties, Bodegas Alvear boasts the ability to age 5 million liters of wine in oak butts at once. One of its most well-known wines is the PX de Solera 1927, which identifies the Solera the wine was aged in as beginning in 1927. The original Alvear estate, the bodega "de la Casa", has Montilla's oldest solera barrel system, which houses 200-year old Amontillado. Falling interest in both sweet wines and fortified wines has meant that the Alvear PX de Solera 1927 has become a phenomenal bargain for a high-quality, complex wine.

The palate has a sweet, rich and fleshy sultana and raisin finish. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The Pedro Ximenez Solera 1927 is non-vintage, but does have some 1927 material in it. This is totally dark brown/amber with notes of figs, toffee, caramel syrup, molasses and coffee. It is dense, super sweet, intense, rich and an amazingly, unctuously textured, thick beverage to consume slowly and introspectively after a meal. Drink now through 2050, or even longer. Wine Enthusiast: One of the world's best PX wines is Solera 1927, the pride of Alvear. Whatever solera stocks went into this bottling were well selected. Aromas of maple and fine wood turn to fig and caramel. Saturation and weight on the palate are expected, but this has some (though not a lot) acidic cut. Deep flavors of fig and Nutella finish with nuttiness and warmth. Producer Information Bodegas Alvear is one of the largest and best-known producers in Andalucia, in southern Spain. Ending in medium dry soft but concentrated finish. Great surprise. Producer Information Blandy’s Madeira was founded by John Blandy in 1811 and is well-known for producing quality Madeira, a fortified wine, from Portugal’s island of the same name, several hundred kilometers west off the northwest coast of Africa. The Blandy family is one of the original founding families of the Maderia wine trade and is the only family to still own and operate their original wine company on the island of Maderia. The recent history of Madeira and that of Blandy’s are closely aligned, enjoying the growth associated with an island on a major sea lane in the 19th Century. The Blandy family headed the association and was able to stay in business while many individual Madeira companies ceased to exist. Madeira lacked the popularity it once had so in order to expand the global market, the Blandy’s offered the Symington family (Port producers since the 19th Century) a partnership in the newly named Madeira Wine Company in 1989. These Madeiras are produced from a single vintage and grape variety, and are categorized as either Vintage or Colheita dependant on wine character. Blandy’s was the first in Madeira to produce a youthful, vintage dated Madeira for early consumption with their 1994 Malmsey and created another new category for Madeira in 2002 with the introduction of “Blandy’s Alvada” – a blend of Malmsey and Bual. Blandy’s produces Madeira from all the principal grape varieties: Malmsey, Bual, Verdelho, Sercial, and Tinta Negra Mole. The vines are planted on steep terraced vineyards throughout the...
