Rich flavors of bitter chocolate, walnuts and baked chestnuts. This Oloroso wine has an intense, concentrated aftertaste, lightened by a tangy acidity. Producer Information Bodegas Lustau is a famous Sherry producer in Andalucia and is arguably the most recognized fortified wine producer in the world. It was was founded in 1896 by José Ruiz-Berdejo as an almacenista, which also grew its own vines. Almacenistas generally bought young wine (Ruiz made his own) and matured them in their own soleras, before selling them to larger houses, who would either blend it with older wine, or mature it longer in their larger soleras. It wasn't until the 1950s that Ruiz's son-in-law Emilio Lustau Ortega began bottling and exporting his own wine. Now based in Jerez, Lustau is the only winery that has sites in all three cities of the Sherry triangle: Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Lustau buys fruit from vineyards, while also maintaining two of its own. The first is the Montegilillo vineyard, which is on the white limestone albariza soil local to the region. The second is the Las Cruces vineyard, which is on sandy coastal soils. Lustau now produces a range of Sherry, but achieves the most recognition for its Almacenista collection. Continuing the tradition, the collection is series of single offerings from smaller producers that Lustau bottles and distributes. The style of the local producer is maintained and their name is featured on the bottle.

Producer: Bodegas Alvear Ratings: WA 98 WE 96 Vintage: 1927 Size: 375ml ABV: 16% Varietal: Pedro Ximenez Country/Region: Spain, Montilla-Moriles A raisiny, plum pudding-like nose with a wealth of brown-tea aromas. The palate has a sweet, rich and fleshy sultana and raisin finish. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The Pedro Ximenez Solera 1927 is non-vintage, but does have some 1927 material in it. This is totally dark brown/amber with notes of figs, toffee, caramel syrup, molasses and coffee. It is dense, super sweet, intense, rich and an amazingly, unctuously textured, thick beverage to consume slowly and introspectively after a meal. Drink now through 2050, or even longer. Wine Enthusiast: One of the world's best PX wines is Solera 1927, the pride of Alvear. Whatever solera stocks went into this bottling were well selected. Aromas of maple and fine wood turn to fig and caramel. Saturation and weight on the palate are expected, but this has some (though not a lot) acidic cut. Deep flavors of fig and Nutella finish with nuttiness and warmth. Producer Information Bodegas Alvear is one of the largest and best-known producers in Andalucia, in southern Spain. It was built in 1729 by Diego de Alvear y Escalera in what is now the Montilla-Moriles DO, and its wines are competitive even with the great sherry producers of Jerez. The winery's success came out of a contract Diego won to ship wine to England in the late 18th Century, and today 40 percent of Alvear's production is for the international market. The estate owns a number of vineyards in Montilla-Moriles and buys fruit from other producers in the region. Located south of the city of Córdoba, Montilla-Moriles is most famous for wines similar stylistically to sherry (the classic Amontillado style of Sherry actually means "in the style of Montilla"). Pedro Ximénez (often dubbed "PX") is more commonly used in Montilla-Moriles than Palomino (which is predominant in Jerez). The solera system is still used to age the wines, often under a flor. Across its multiple properties, Bodegas Alvear boasts the ability to age 5 million liters of wine in oak butts at once. One of its most well-known wines is the PX de Solera 1927, which identifies the Solera the wine was aged in as beginning in 1927. The palate is staunch and doesn't back down; the high-toned nut and citrus flavors seem classic and elevated. And the finish is intense and frames everything in walnut oil and toast. It is sweet and full-bodied, with a smooth, almost treacle-like consistency, but good balancing acidity. There is a faint rancio character that adds complexity, and a fresh, everlasting finish. For anyone who likes a sweet Sherry that's balanced, this is a good place to go. Each wine and vintage is aged according to the vineyard, maturity of the vines and the wine's own distinctive character. It has a diverse portfolio of brands, but production is largely focused on the Monastrell and Tempranillo grape varieties. Many of Volver's wines are made from the 110-hectare (272-acre) vineyard in La Mancha. Here, the soils are sandy and iron- and limestone-rich, and are planted to low yielding, dry-farmed Tempranillo vines. The best section of the land, the Finca Los Juncares vineyard, is 29ha (72 acres) and includes Tempranillo vines planted in 1957. The wine made from this vineyard, the Bodegas Volver is aged 18 months in French oak barrels and bottled unfiltered. Paso a Paso and Venta Morales are also made in the La Mancha vineyards. These two labels both produce a range of Tempranillo wines, but a couple of white wines are also made under the Paso a Paso label from Verdejo and Macabeo. In Alicante, Bodegas Volver make the Tarima Hill label, which is focused on Monastrell, a variety that does very well in the extreme climate here. Bodegas Volver produces another Alicante wine, Triga, which is a blend of 85 percent Monastrell and 15 percent Cabernet Sauvignon from the bodega's oldest vines, some planted in 1925. Bodegas Volver's Jumilla vineyards are planted to Monastrell with vines ranging in age from 25-35 years. The region experiences extreme temperature fluctuations with little rain.

Garnacha and tempranillo grapes are used for this, giving it a wonderfully fruity and floral finesse. Producer Information Bodegas Beronia is a Spanish wine producer, founded in 1973 in Rioja. It is located in the Rioja Alta subregion and is surrounded by 25 hectares (61 acres) of estate vineyards, supplemented by almost 900ha (2223 acres) of grower vineyards from around the region. Tempranillo dominates the vineyards, although Beronia also has plantings of Graciano, Garnacha and Viura. A majority of the wines produced by Beronia fall under the Rioja DOCa title. As well as making several entry-level varietal and Crianza wines, there are also Reserva and Gran Reserva wines, and a selection of top cuvées aged for an extended period in oak and only released in top years: the 198 Barricas Reserva, Beronia IIIac and the Beronia Viñas Viejas. Oak aging is key at Beronia. Barrels are sourced from forests in Oregon and the American Midwest, as well as from Allier and Limousin in France. New and old oak are used, depending on the wine, and Beronia was the first to create a "mixed" barrel, made from American staves and French tops. Following their time in oak, Beronia's wines are typically aged in bottle for a period before they are released. Beronia's vineyards are planted on soils of sand, sediment and clay and are poor in organic materials. The vines are a mixture of pre-phylloxera plantings and newer vines planted in 2011. There are some older vines among Beronia's grower vineyards as well – these are used to create the Beronia Viñas Viejas wine.

El Arenal is planted entirely to Malbec, while Colomé and La Brava are planted with Malbec, Torrontés and a range of other red varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Tannat, Petit Verdot, Syrah and Bonarda. Altura Maxima foregoes the Tannat but also features Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This altitude maximizes exposure to the sun, and creates a high diurnal temperature variation. These conditions help to achieve uniform ripening of the grapes. The lack of UV protection in the very highest sites produces thicker-skinned grapes. Viticultural practices include use of organic fertilizers and biodynamic preparations. The estate is also the oldest working winery in the country, founded in 1831, probably by the Spanish governor of Salta, Nicolás Isasmendi. Certainly in 1854, his daughter Ascensión brought the first pre-phylloxera Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon vines to Colomé. The Isasmendi-Dávalos family owned the estate, with one break of 13 years, from 1831 until 2001; it is now part of Hess Family Estates.

Producer: Bodegas Bilbainas Vintage: 2017 Size: 750ml ABV: 12% Varietal: Grenache Country/Region: Spain, Rioja Its name was conceived as a tribute to Haro, one of the first cities in Spain to have electric street lighting. This beautiful new sparkling wine it's a firm commitment to return to its origin. Producer Information Bodegas Bilbainas, one of the ten oldest wineries in Rioja, was founded in 1901 in Haro's iconic Train Station District (Rioja Alta). Its origins go back to 1859, when French producers established in Rioja to produce and export red wine to France. Four decades later, Santiago Ugarte, a businessman from Bilbao, would take up the reins. Bodegas Bilbainas defines itself as a classically styled winery, which was pioneer 100 years ago in understanding winemaking and viticulture in a very contemporary way, giving primer importance to the vineyards, the terroir and the grapes. Specialized in making vintage wines, Bodegas Bilbainas produces some of the most famed and emblematic wines from Rioja, as La Vicalanda or its flagship brand, Vina Pomal. Nevertheless, Bilbainas has also strong historical links with the production of sparkling wines since they started to export it to France during World War I. Moreover, they have never abandoned their pioneer spirit, focusing their innovation efforts in surprising estate wines, which aim to find the true expression of varieties as Tempranillo, White Tempranillo, White Maturana, Graciano or Grenache.

Producer: Bodegas Lustau Ratings: WE 90 D 90 Vintage: NV Size: 750ml ABV: 15.5% Varietal: Palomino Country/Region: Spain, Andalucia Bright yellow color with golden reflections. This Manzanilla is laced with sea breeze scents and pleasant chamomile and flor aromas. Bone dry and light, fresh and crisp, with a hint of sea salt on the palate. Delicate and refreshingly acid with a lingering aftertaste. Reviews: Wine Enthusiast: Textbook Manzanilla! Papirusa is a clean, mildly salinic offering with green banana and toast aromas. The palate is just salty enough, but the wine's more about almond, apple and lemon peel than saline. And the feel and finish are nutty and warm. A full-bodied but refreshing style as only Lustau can do. Decanter: Restrained, not very obvious, shows its power in the palate, with complex yeasty-nutty aromas and a saline aftertaste. Delicious, appetising; a benchmark indeed. The style of the local producer is maintained and their...

Producer: Bodega y Cava de Weinert Vintage: 2019 Size: 750ml ABV: 14.5% Varietal: Bordeaux Blend Red Country/Region: Argentina, Mendoza The palate is an explosion of delicate flavors, nice and delightful mouthfeel. Quite delicate and smooth texture on the long finish. Producer Information Bodega y Cava de Weinert, also known as Bodega Weinert, are a modern, high-quality producer of the Argentine province of Mendoza. It was founded in 1975 by the German-born Brazilian Don Bernardo Weinert, but the original building was constructed in 1890 and is a beautiful piece of Spanish colonial architecture. The thick stone walls create excellent temperature and humidity for ageing wine, a process of which Bodega Weinert have a traditional approach. All red wines are aged for at least two years in very large French oak barrels, known as foudre. Up to 440 hectolitres in size and between 50 and 60 years old, these traditional barrels allow for the slow integration of oak into the wine. Winemaking processes incorporate some modern practices including destemming all grapes once they have arrived at the winery. Fermentation occurs in modern concrete tanks, but reach temperatures of 28 to 30°C (82-86°F) which is a more old-fashioned approach to winemaking. After the initial commercial harvest in 1976, the first Weinert Malbec Estrella was produced in 1977 to high acclaim. It has since gone on to be the flagship wine for Bodega Weinert. Malbec features heavily, but their collection also includes varietals of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as well as Bordeaux blends. Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc are also produced in select vintages. Bodega Weinert doesn’t own any vineyards. Instead, they work with select growers to source their grapes from the regions of Luján de Cuyo and Maipú. They seek out vines that are at least 25 years old, ideally over 60 years old that produce grapes with concentrated flavour compounds.
