Producer: Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste Vintage: 1990 Size: 750ml ABV: 12.5% Varietal: Bordeaux Blend Red Country/Region: France, Pauillac Impressive and charming nose with balanced and rich flavors. Great elegance and length on the finish. Producer Information Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a wine estate situated on a low hillock (or "puy") above the village of Bages in the Pauillac region of the Médoc. Classified as a fifth growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, the Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant grand vin is known for its velvety texture and cigar box and cassis aromas. A second wine, Lacoste-Borie, is made from lots declassified from the grand vin and tends to have a higher proportion of Merlot. Grand-Puy-Lacoste, sometimes shortened to "GPL" in some circles, is a well-regarded estate. Sometimes considered as outperforming its fifth-growth status, it is often cited for its good value among its stablemates and neighbors in Pauillac. Château Lynch-Bages (a prime contender for reclassification higher than its 1855 status as another fifth gowth) lies due east, with Château Batailley to the south. Due north, albeit over one of the drainage streams that bisect the Haut-Médoc in this area, is Château Pontet-Canet (another fifth growth that far outperforms its initial ranking) while to the west is Grand Puy Ducasse. The Grand-Puy-Lacoste vineyard is sited around the eponymous château and covers 55 hectares (136 acres) of the wider estate. It is planted 75 percent to Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 percent Merlot and 5 percent Cabernet Franc.

Reviews: Vinous: The 2015 Grand Puy Lacoste is just as compelling from bottle as it was from barrel. Sensual, polished and refined, the 2015 is all class. Silky tannins, perfumed aromatics and beautifully delineated fruit are some of the signatures. The natural richness of the year comes through nicely, but without overpowering the wine's mid-weight sense of structure. This is a fabulous example of the year. James Suckling: Swathed in spicy and toasty oak aromas, this has a wealth of superbly expressed red and dark berries, flowers and mint. The palate delivers a very assertive and energetic array of dark berries and spiced plums with a fresh, focused, vibrant finish. Superb wine. Try from 2023. Fine touch of precious wood, black berry fruit, dark heart cherries, candied orange zest, fine earthy nuances, hint of tobacco. Complex, sweet cherries, present, integrated tannins, good freshness, dark nougat on the finish. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Medium to deep garnet in color, the 2009 Grand-Puy-Lacoste opens with a nose of sweaty leather, damp earth, baked cherries and dried mulberries with touches of fried herbs, black olives and cast iron pan. Medium-bodied, firm and chewy, this is a more elegantly styled 2009 with provocative herbal sparks and a ferrous finish. Jeb Dunnuck: I loved the 2009, and like most 2009s, it has a ripe, sexy, yet still classic style that's evolving gracefully, with ample darker currant and black cherry fruits as well as tobacco leaf, cedar pencil, truffly earth, and spice box-like nuances. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and concentrated on the palate, with plenty of mid-palate depth and tannins, it's going to continue drinking brilliantly for another two decades. It needs an hour in a decanter if drinking any time soon. Producer Information The history of Grand-Puy-Lacoste is fascinating in many ways. It is a family saga going back to the 16th century. The name Grand-Puy, already mentioned in documents from the Middle Ages, comes from the ancient term "puy" which means "hillock, small height". True to its name, the vineyard sits on outcrops with a terroir similar to that of the Médoc's first growths. Since the 16th century the property was passed down from generation to generation, until the current family, the Borie's, bought the property in the 1920s.

Reviews: Vinous: The 2016 Grand Puy-Lacoste has a clean, precise bouquet with nicely detailed blackberry, briar and tobacco aromas, touches of mint emerging with time, all utterly charming. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, conveying a sense of symmetry throughout and leading into a deft, quite persistent finish. This is very classy, and it should age with style. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting. James Suckling: A neoclassical edition of Grand-Puy-Lacoste, this has cedar, graphite, deeply integrated cedar and spicy-oak influence and a very fresh array of ripe blackberries, dark cherries and cassis. The palate is so seamless. It builds beautifully and delivers a long, seamless array of perfectly ripe dark fruit, swathed in fine, firm, ascending layers of tannins. As good as we have seen in recent vintages, this is a star of the vintage. Showing classic cedar wood, blackcurrant and lead pencil aromas, flavours of berry fruit, orange zest and fresh herbs and plenty of underlying structure. Intensely flavored and sharply focused, with a restrained sweetness and lovely purity to its dark fruit flavors. Very rich and deep but not jammy, this superb Pauillac's depth of fruit is partly hidden today by its serious tannic structure. Reviews: Wine Advocate: An absolutely magnificent wine from this very popular estate, which sits well off the Route du Vin, just to the southwest of the town of Pauillac, its classic creme de cassis and floral notes are well-displayed. The wine possesses supple tannin, a full body, voluptuous character and a layered, impressively textured mouthfeel. This is a brilliant effort from Grand Puy Lacoste that can be drunk in 4-5 years or cellared for three decades or more. James Suckling: Intense hazelnuts and blackberries on the nose follow through to a full to medium body, with chocolate and berry flavors and firm tannins. Not giving away a lot at the finish at the moment. Reserved and sophisticated. But structured and chewy. A beautiful wine. The soil is a classic Médoc mix of layers of gravel of differing depths, mixed with sand and a little clay. With good drainage from the soils, Pauillac's proximity to the Gironde estuary also moderates weather extremes and helps to guard against frost. Grapes are fermented in 43 temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, sized to correspond to specific parcels of vines. Vats are then tasted and a blend is made before ageing. Grand-Puy-Lacoste sees 16 to 18 months in oak (two-thirds new wood), while Lacoste-Borie has 14 to 16 months in oak, 45 percent of...

Producer: Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste Ratings: WA 92 JS 91 Vintage: 2006 Size: 750ml ABV: 13.5% Varietal: Bordeaux Blend Red Country/Region: France, Pauillac A deep & darkly-pigmented wine with a medium intensity of ruby-red color. Intense, attractive aromas of mulberry & red-fruit are displayed on the nose. Cassis flavours on the palate are supported by fresh acidity & the alcohol adds richness to the mid-palate. The wine is of medium body with fine, well-integrated tannins & the finish lasts well. Reviews: Wine Advocate: While not at the level of the phenomenal 2005, Grand-Puy-Lacoste has produced another classic wine with the creme de cassis fruit that I often find in both Mouton Rothschild and Pontet-Canet, yet both of those vineyards are closer to the Gironde River. This wine has a pure personality, with the aforementioned classic creme de cassis notes, medium to full body, beautiful density, purity, texture, and length. If anything, this recalls a hypothetical blend of their brilliant 1995 and 1996. Tannins are elevated, so patience will be required. This was Xavier Borie's first vintage in his new state-of-the-art winemaking facility. James Suckling: A clean young wine, with fine, silky tannins, good focused fruit and a medium-to-long finish. Caressing and refined. Producer Information Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a wine estate situated on a low hillock (or "puy") above the village of Bages in the Pauillac region of the Médoc. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Another "best ever" performance, the Grand-Puy-Ducasse is made in a charming style for a 2005 Pauillac. This deep ruby-hued, very concentrated, precocious, showy effort displays copious quantities of sweet oak intermixed with black cherries, black currants, velvety tannins, medium body, and loads of fruit. Decanter: Ripe and forward in its mix of cherries and currants, and filled out with rich oak, hints of coffee and a light touch of root-beer-like sweetness, this bottling is fairly seductive at the start, but its generous fruit and supple texture both give ground to plenty of youthfully tough tannins on the latter palate.

Producer: Château Duhart-Milon Vintage: 1947 Size: 750ml ABV: 14% Varietal: Bordeaux Blend Red Country/Region: France, Pauillac Producer Information Château Duhart-Milon, previously known as Duhart-Milon-Rothschild, is a wine estate based in the Pauillac appellation of the Médoc, just north of Bordeaux city. The estate was ranked as a fourth growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification and is owned by its illustrious neighbor, Lafite Rothschild, and shares its vineyard management and winemaking teams. The grand vin (the eponymous, flagship wine) is known for its elegance, combined with Paulliac's typical power. The winery buildings are based in central Pauillac town while the single 76-hectare (190-acre) vineyard block is situated just to the west of the Lafite Rothschild vineyard in northern Pauillac. The vineyards lie around the hamlet of Milon and facing Lafon-Rochet to the north in Saint-Estèphe. The soils are a mix of fine gravel and sand on limestone, and are planted two-thirds to Cabernet Sauvignon and one-third to Merlot. This makeup is regularly reflected in the final wine although the precise proportion of the grand vin blend can vary with each vintage – for example, the 2012 features 53 percent Merlot. The winery buildings were completely renovated in 2003 and vinification takes place in vats designated for specific vineyard plots. The grand vin is aged for up to 18 months in oak of which around half is new oak. Duhart-Milon produces a second wine called Moulin de Duhart, and in previous vintages an occasional third wine, Baron de Milon, is also released. The château's average production is around 30,000 cases a year. The property is said to derive its name from the captain of a privateer (effectively a state-sponsored sea raider) named Duhart who sailed in the service of Louis XV and retired to the Médoc. The "Pirate's House" stood by the Gironde until the 1950s, and endures on the château's label. Following the 1855 Classification, the estate underwent a period of decline until it was bought by Baron Eric de Rothschild in 1962. The vineyards had to be replanted, and as a result, wines from the 2000 vintage onwards are generally held to be superior to those of the previous few decades due to the increasing vine age.

Under the name Artigues Arnaud, it was rated as a Fifth Growth in the Bordeaux Classification of 1855. Graphite, smoke, tobacco and licorice burst onto the palate, followed by layers of dark, inviting fruit. Supremely classy from start to finish, the 2013 impresses for its energy, balance and pure, mineral-driven cut. The 2013 is by no means a huge wine, but it is super-polished to the core.
