This sensational Insignia can be enjoyed over the next 10-15+ years. Producer Information Joseph Phelps is one of Napa Valley's most prominent wine producers. As is the case with many of Napa's most famous producers, the key grape variety here is Cabernet Sauvignon. The iconic redwood winery is located just outside of St Helena. The company owns vineyards across Napa, notably in Stags Leap, Oak Knoll, Rutherford and Oakville. The estate was established in 1973 with a first release of three wines. Joseph Phelps was running a construction company in Colorado and had come to Napa for a project and had fallen in love with the wine industry there. After importing grapes back to Denver for vinification for a time, he bought a cattle ranch in the valley and began planting vineyards. Joseph Phelps' flagship wine is Insignia, which made its debut in 1974. This is a blend based on Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller amounts of other Bordeaux varieties. The precise components vary with each vintage. Current options are Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. The company hopes to replant some Merlot for future vintages. Phelps' aim was to move away from varietal labeling and create a wine that could be different every year, depending on what the vintage called for. It is one of Napa's so called cult Cabernets, and several vintages have been awarded 100 points by noted wine critic Robert Parker. From 2004 Insignia is made entirely from estate grown fruit. Outside of Insignia, Joseph Phelps makes a large portfolio of wines. Fruit for these is sourced both from estate vineyards and partner growers. The line up ranges from single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon...

A wine of depth, elegance and finesse, the palate is fresh and focused with creamy texture and layers of blackberry, mocha and black cherry. The seamless tannin structure and balance culminate in an uplifting, lengthy finish. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2018 Insignia is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec and 2% Cabernet Franc. The vineyard sources this year include: 30% Las Rocas (Stags Leap District),18% Yountville (Oak Knoll District), 13% Banca Dorada (Rutherford), 18% Suscol (South Napa Valley), 14% Home Ranch (St. Helena), 12% Las Rocas (Stags Leap District), 7% Barboza (Stags Leap District). It was aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels. Deep garnet-purple colored, it comes storming out of the glass with powerful notes of blackcurrant cordial, stewed black plums and boysenberries, plus hints of cedar chest, graphite, menthol and wet slate with a fragrant waft of clove oil. The medium to full-bodied palate already demonstrates remarkable balance at this youthful stage, featuring a firm backbone of fine-grained tannins and bold freshness to support the tightly wound, crunchy black fruits, finishing long and spicy. Jeb Dunnuck: The 2018 Insignia checks in as 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec and the rest Cabernet Franc, from a mix of vineyards (mostly in the southern part of the valley) aged two years in new French oak. It has an incredible bouquet of cassis, currants, dark chocolate, lead pencil, and tobacco, and while it's unquestionably Napa, it has a regal, structured, almost Bordeaux-like vibe as well. Full-bodied, perfectly balanced, and layered on the palate, with silky tannins, this quintessential Insignia is up with the finest vintages of this cuvée I've tasted and is in the same realm as the 1997. Lots of licorice, black currant, Chinese black tea, cedarwood and spice jump from the glass of this wine. On the palate, these dark fruit characteristics are harmonized with warm tones of redwood bark and baking spices. Plush, soft tannins and bright acidity enhance the length, complementing the rich fruit and savory undertones. Reviews: Wine Advocate: A Napa stalwart, the 2021 Insignia is a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Malbec, aged in 100% new French oak. Cedar and vanilla scents accent black cherries and a hint of redcurrants on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is soft and plush, easy to enjoy now but with the requisite concentration to age for up to two decades. Long, silky and tart on the finish. James Suckling: A standout vintage for one of California’s most collectible cabernet sauvignons. The color is black throughout, but with a dark garnet rim. Gorgeous aromatics of spearmint, pencil shavings, toasted oak and dark plums, before a silky, fresh but firm texture takes over the palate and dusky blackcurrant, tobacco-leaf, rose-petal and cedar notes emerge and linger. Full-bodied and saturated with rounded, well-integrated tannins that emerge on the lingering finish and keep melting in the glass. Turns elegant on the finish, where the tannins are soft and mellow. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The fabulous 1978 appears to be even stronger than I remember. A dense plum/garnet color is accompanied by an exceptional bouquet of espresso beans, sweet red and black currants, licorice, lead pencil shavings and cedar. Deep, ripe, full-bodied and opulent with oodles of fruit and glycerin, this beauty is fresh and lively. Although fully mature, it appears capable of lasting another decade or more. In 1978, heavy rains finally returned to Napa Valley, replenishing drought-stricken soils and helping to fill the reservoirs. The summer growing season was relatively warm with some heat spikes during the last two weeks of September, which forced growers to harvest earlier than expected. The 1978's final blend was 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, with 32% from estate vineyards and 68% from growers. Fifty-five percent of the fruit came from Oakville vineyards, 20% from the Spring Valley Vineyard in St. Helena, 13% from the Eisele Vineyard and 12% from their new Backus Vineyard in Oakville. Total production was 1,200 cases, and the natural alcohol came in at 13.5%. The wine’s time in barrel was extended dramatically to 24 months in French oak. John Gilman: Drinking Joseph Phelps reds from the decade of the 1970s is one of the great treats in the world of wine. 1978 was one of the earliest iterations for this Bordeaux-inspired blend from the winery, which was composed of a blend of fifty percent cabernet sauvignon, thirty percent merlot and twenty percent cabernet franc. The wine was fully mature when I last saw a bottle in 2007, but time has not touched it and today it is every bit as vibrant and expressive. The bouquet is deep, complex and very classy, wafting from the glass in a mix of cassis, sweet blackberries, dark soil tones, a bit of tariness, cigar smoke, a dollop of fresh herbs and a beautiful topnote of mint. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and vibrant, with a superb core, impressive focus and balance,...

Vinous: Joseph Phelps's 1976 Insignia was off the charts. The 1976 was made predominantly (94%) from Eisele fruit, so this bottle provided a fascinating contrast with the other 1970s Eisele Cabernets earlier in the evening. I loved the wine's extraordinary bouquet and huge, explosive finish. It's hard to say how long the 1976 will last, but it showed no signs of fading anytime soon. The 1976 Insignia is an American icon. It was an unforgettable bottle worthy of closing this great night of food and wine. Reviews: John Gilman: The bouquet is a sweet blend of black berries, chocolate, pomegranate, mint, lovely soil tones, gentle smoke tones and a bit of chipotle pepper with extended aeration. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and quite powerful for Insignia, with tangy acids (obviously from acidulation, given its heady ripeness), melted tannins and fine length and grip on the finish. There are no signs of heat or a lack of balance on the backend, but this is not quite as aromatically pure as most examples of Phelps wines that I have tasted from the late 1970s and early 1980s. It is a very fine success for the vintage, but very modestly disappointing by the First Growth standards of this winery in this epoch. Producer: Joseph Phelps Ratings: WA 100 VN 92 Vintage: 2002 Size: 750ml Varietal: Bordeaux Blend Red Country/Region: United States, Oakville Rich flavors fan out, the way you hope for, coating the palate with layers of currant, fresh earth, mineral, cedar, tobacco, mocha, black licorice and espresso. The tannins are firm and the structure built for a longer haul. Very much in its infancy still at age 10, it finds that unusual bridge between dense Napa fruit and a Bordeaux build. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2002 boasts an inky/purple color along with notes of graphite, violets, blackberries, creme de cassis and hints of charcoal and barbecue in addition to a full-bodied, multilayered mouthfeel that builds incrementally with great purity, staggering fruit concentration, and a long, velvety, 50+-second finish. Vinous: Slightly roasted, high-toned black raspberry nose show a slightly pruney ripeness (the VA here was a relatively elevated 0.85). Creamy, plush and sweet, displaying excellent breadth and still-considerable baby fat. This was quite flashy on release but now seems to be in an adolescent phase. Big, building tannins saturate the tongue and front teeth. Winemaker Hepworth described it as 'like a teenager, and without the suavity of tannins of the 2001.' Reviews: Wine Advocate: The sensational, prodigious 2001 Insignia Proprietary Red Wine (89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot and 3% Malbec) has never performed better. Still extremely youthful with a dense purple color as well as a beautiful bouquet of cedar, charcoal, incense, creme de cassis and black cherry jam, fabulous intensity, a multidimensional mouthfeel and a skyscraper-like texture, it is a Napa classic that is still very youthful and belies its age of ten years. Like its stablemate, it should age impeccably for 35 or more years. Kudos to Joseph Phelps Vineyards! Wine Enthusiast: A triumph. Aged nearly two years in all-new French oak, this massive wine stuns with its superb balance. Manages the elusive challenge of reining in hugely ripe black currant, cherry and oak flavors and sweet tannins while keeping the palate impression soft and alluring, almost feminine. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2003 has performed well in recent tasting, showing a dense purple color along with notes of creosote, lavender, flowers, creme de cassis, espresso roast, white chocolate and a hint of oak. Still in a young adolescent stage, it should drink nicely for another 15-20 years. Wine Enthusiast: One of the first, if not the first, of the proprietarily named Napa Bordeaux blends, Phelps Insignia has been one of California’s greatest Cabs for decades. This is their 30th anniversary bottling, and it’s worthy of the tradition. Ultrarich and smooth, with a mouthfeel that’s pure velvet, it’s fairly thick in tannins now, suggesting cellaring. But it’s huge in blackberry, dark unsweetened chocolate and spicy plum fruit, and will easily hold for a very long time. Best now, if carefully decanted, and through 2020. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2012 Proprietary Red Insignia, a final blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot and the rest Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc all from estate vineyards, was aged 24 months in 100% new French oak. There are 15,000 cases of it, and it’s a fabulous, classic Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. Inky purple to the rim, with notes of lead pencil shavings, incense, camphor, blackberry and creme de cassis, the wine is full-bodied, offering a multi-layered, textural, skyscraper-like mouthfeel, terrific purity, density and richness. All of this is achieved without a sense of heaviness or anything aggressive. Wine Spectator: Packs a wallop, perhaps overly so, with extracted dark berry flavors and tannic muscle. Outside of Insignia, Joseph Phelps makes a large portfolio of wines. Fruit for these is sourced both from estate vineyards and partner growers. The line up ranges from single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon wines to more approachable varietal wines made from classic California varieties. These include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc. Fruit for some of these comes from vineyards along the Sonoma Coast. Older wines may feature other AVAs

Producer: Joseph Phelps Ratings: WE 95 JS 97 Vintage: 2019 Size: 750ml ABV: 14% Varietal: Chardonnay Country/Region: United States, Oakville The 2019 Chardonnay is refined and nuanced with fragrant aromatics of Key Lime, white flower, jasmine, and toasted brioche. A wine of great distinction displaying delicate structure and subtle oak influence, with a long and layered palate of citrus zest, green apple and a saline note reminiscent of the nearby Pacific Ocean. Reviews: Wine Enthusiast: This wine is memorable in its complexity and structure, built with such finesse, refinement and freshness. Succulent in peach, nectarine and pear, it evokes the sea air and fog of the region, showing a touch of lushness midpalate before giving way fully to crisp acidity and a briny tease of oyster shell. James Suckling: This is a wild chardonnay with so much sliced cooked apple, tangy pineapple and some mango. Vivid acidity. Energized white. Really lively and intense at the finish. Hints of vanilla and toffee at the end. So much flavor and freshness. Drinkable now, but better in a year or two.
