Great elegance and length on the finish. Reviews: Wine Advocate: One of Australia’s most traditional winemakers, Colin Kay fashions old style, high quality, distinctive Australian reds. The flagship wine, the 2003 Shiraz Block 6 (from 113-year-old vines) is a full-throttle, traditionally made Australian Shiraz boasting a dense plum/garnet/purple color in addition to a bouquet of creosote, sweet black cherries, cassis, forest floor, underbrush, and pepper. With great depth, full-bodied, powerful, concentrated flavors, high tannin, and a blockbuster finish, this distinctive Shiraz should drink well for 10-15 years. Producer Information Kay Brothers Amery Vineyards and Winery is a South Australia-based wine producer and the oldest winery in the McLaren Vale wine region to still be owned by its founding family. The winery makes predominantly red wine and is especially known for its Shiraz, but also produces fortified and sparkling wines within the collection. The winery was established in 1890 by the brothers Herbert and Frederick Kay. The first vines brought to the property were Shiraz, Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon with Shiraz being the first to be planted. The two brothers also had roles in the Australian wine industry outside of their own vineyards: Herbert was chairman on the Australian Wine Board from 1933 until 1945, and Frederick was a member of the Phylloxera Board. Kay Brothers sold a significant portion of its fruit to bulk-wine producers for much of its history until a local Australian wine market began to develop in the 1960s and 1970s. The number of varieties in its portfolio has expanded to include Grenache, Merlot, Muscat Blanc, and Mourvedre although Shiraz still makes the brand's signature wines. The flagship wine from the collection is the Block 6 Shiraz which is handpicked from vines that are over 125 years old. It spends 21 months in both American and French oak prior to bottling and will happily cellar for a decade. The winery continues to use its gravity facility, as well as a basket press that was first installed in 1928 that features in numerous wines within the collection. Recently, the roof of the winery has been outfitted with solar...

Producer: D'Arenberg Vintage: 2003 Size: 750ml ABV: 14.5% Varietal: Syrah, Viognier Country/Region: Australia, McLaren Vale The wine has an amazing dark reddish-purple color with added fragrance and flower perfume by the Viognier. Red currant, blueberry, herbs and cedar flavors tail into an incredible finish. Producer Information D'Arenberg is a wine producer located in the McLaren Vale subregion of South Australia. The 60-plus wines in the portfolio are known as much for their quirky names as they are for their quality – d'Arenberg's flagship wine is called the Dead Arm, and other cuvées in the range include the Derelict Vineyard, the Love Grass, and the Vociferate Dipsomaniac. The estate was established in 1912 by Joseph Osborn, who initially sold grapes from the vineyards to other wineries in the region. The d'Arenberg winery was built in 1927, and today, the estate is run by fourth-generation Chester Osborn and his father, d'Arry whom constructed the geometric d'Arenberg cube on the estate in 2017. The award-winning building is an architectural wonder, appearing to float in the vineyard. The range of vineyards at d'Arenberg allow for diversity within their portfolio of wines. Those in the McLaren Vale enjoy a warm, dry Mediterranean climate, cooled by the gully winds that come off the Sellicks Hills. These vineyards are planted to grape varieties like Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Marsanne, which thrive in the warm temperatures. In contrast, d'Arenberg's Adelaide Hills vineyard has a much cooler climate with grapes such as Chardonnay, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. All d'Arenberg vineyards are certified for organic and biodynamic processes. In the winery, all wines including the whites are basket-pressed after fermentation. D'Arenberg is well known for the Dead Arm Shiraz of the Icons range named after the fungal vine disease eutypa that often causes one arm of the vine to die. This intensifies and concentrates the grapes on the other side of the Shiraz vines, making an intensely flavored wine. The Dead Arm of the Icons range is often met with high-acclaim from both producers and consumers. Other notable wines include the complex-blend of The Old Bloke & The Three Young Blondes of which combines Shiraz with Roussane, Viognier and Marsanne as well as...

On the palate, it is full-bodied and well-structured, featuring velvety tannins and a complex blend of dark fruit, cocoa, and spices. The finish is long and smooth, showcasing the wine's depth and balance. Producer Information Kaesler is an Australian wine producer, located in the Barossa Valley of South Australia. It has been producing premium quality, estate grown Shiraz from old vines for over 20 years. Kaesler produces a range of classic Barossa wines. Other notable wines in the collection include the Alte Reben Shiraz and the WOMS which is a quintessential Australian blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The Stonehorse collection is the entry-level range offered from Kaesler. It includes varietal Chardonnay, Touriga and Malbec. Reviews: Wine Advocate: One of this estate’s flagship wines, the 2003 The Dead Arm Shiraz appears to be better than the 2002. A deeper, richer, fuller-bodied offering that spent time in equal parts French and American oak, it possesses an opaque purple color, great intensity, and a fabulously sweet nose of blackberries, cassis, asphalt, earth, and oak. Powerful, super-concentrated, and obviously fashioned from low yields and old vines, this is a classic McLaren Vale old vine Shiraz that should age nicely for 15+ years. James Halliday: Deep colour; typically massively rich and concentrated; black fruits, chocolate, tannins and oak are all fighting each other for top spot. Hopefully, a truce will be declared in 5 or so years. Producer Information D'Arenberg is a wine producer located in the McLaren Vale subregion of South Australia. From the outset, Two Hands set out to be unique and innovative, this approach is reflected in everything from the names of the wines through to, not least, the wines themselves. From small beginnings, the winery has been able to manage its growth organically whilst maintaining an absolute quality focus. Premium fruit is sourced from the finest Shiraz growing regions in Australia, and Two Hands works closely with its estate vineyards and band of growers to ensure the full potential of each vineyard is reached. They handle every parcel of fruit, however small, separately from crushing through to fermentation and oak maturation to ensure complexity and personality in the finished wines. In its simplest form, it could be said that they squeeze the grapes and put them in a bottle. However, in practice there are many different steps and countless hours involved, from vineyard, through to winemaking, tasting, blending and maturation in order to make consistent, quality wines.

Ripe fruits of dark cherry, blackberry, plum and raspberry are complimented by the secondary notes of vanilla and mixed spices. Liquorice and blackberry jam develop on the palate culminating in a joyous experience that celebrates all the elements within the blend. Reviews: Wine Advocate: 2020 was a warm, dry vintage, but the red wines from McLaren show brilliant vitality and freshness. In this 2020 Two Left Feet Shiraz Merlot Cabernet, the composition reads as follows: 69% Shiraz, 16% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, this time all McLaren Vale sourced. The warm season (and the extra year in bottle) works wonders for this style—it's already ballsy and dense, but with the sunshine and the bottle age, everything is coming together nicely. Wine Spectator: Strikes an appealing balance between generous jammy notes of blackberry and huckleberry with firm tannins, salted toffee and espresso flavors. Spicy finish. Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Producer Information Mollydooker is a family owned and operated winery based in a charming part of the world that is McLaren Vale, South Australia. The dedicated team make a portfolio of wines that beautifully represent the warm, coastal climate of the region, but with the uniqueness that results from their trademarked winemaking techniques. Established in 2005, the name Mollydooker – Aussie slang for a left-handed person – was a fitting choice given the majority of the team, including owner Sarah were themselves left-handed. This point of difference runs through all the winery’s operations, from greeting visitors with a left hand, to always placing the wine glass to the left of a table setting. In 2007, Mollydooker found a permanent home in McLaren Vale, with 116 acres of vineyards, and the following decade saw ambitious growth. Now, the team of 50 produces 80,000 cases of wine each year, across five different tiers to wine-lovers across Australia, the US and beyond. Its ‘hero’ grape is the quintessential McLaren Vale grape, Shiraz, whilst other varieties, including Cabernet and Merlot are also...

Vibrant aromatics of red and black berry fruits, a lift of violet florals, clove spice and mixed garden herbs. The palate is dominated by a lively burst of berry fruits, which are well framed by fine, powdery tannins. Juicy plum and blackberry flavors persist through the finish, with sweet spice to close. Producer Information Jim Barry Wines is one of South Australia's most well-known wine producers, having crafted a name for its premium wines made from Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling. The company's most famous wine is the single-vineyard Armagh Shiraz which regularly scores highly with critics. The winery was established in 1959 when Jim and his wife Nancy purchased their first property and vineyards on the outskirts of the Clare Valley. Today the estate owns vineyards in the Clare Valley and Coonawarra, and is well regarded among critics and consumers alike. After purchasing their first vineyards in 1959, the Barrys continued to buy plots throughout the Clare Valley, and today have three vineyards in the region: Armagh, Florita and Lodge Hill. The Armagh vineyard has Shiraz planted on original rootstocks in sandy soils with a high content of clay. The Florita vineyard, planted to Riesling, has some of the oldest vines in Watervale while the Lodge Hill vineyard has both Shiraz and Riesling in two separate plots. The Old Cricket Vineyard in Coonawarra is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, and as may be inferred from its name, is planted on an old cricket ground. The pitch remains in the middle of the vineyard, and many of the Jim Barry wines have names associated with the game.

The powerful and defined tannins are balanced with even-paced acid structure which accentuates length of flavor and delivers a sense of sustained purity on the palate. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Overtones of vanilla and cedar mark the nose of the 2016 Brooks Road Shiraz, which aged in 20%-30% new French oak. Herbal notes and hints of green peppercorns add nuance to the ripe cherry flavors of this full-bodied red. The tannins are supple, making this wine approachable now, but they also linger softly on the finish, suggesting up to a decade of additional ageability. James Suckling: A wine that really shows the prowess and attractive nature of the shiraz that this vineyard can produce. The concentrated yet fresh red plums and cherries really sing on the palate. This region principally surrounds the mighty Murray River, the source of much Australian folklore due to its beauty and majesty. Andrew had his eye on the red brick soil of the Goulburn Valley in Central Victoria, and acquired 350 acres which offered great promise for cool climate red wines which today are used to grow the grapes for the Chapter Three and Basilisk wines. In early 2000, McPherson Wines opened its world class bottling facility in Victoria. Producer: Plan B Wines Ratings: TC 91 Vintage: 2020 Size: 750ml ABV: 14.5% Varietal: Syrah / Shiraz Country/Region: Australia, Frankland River Powerful, super-sweet and concentrated blackcurrant and blueberry aromas, a litle violet lift and a sprinkle of white pepper. Reviews: Tom Cannavan: From 25-year-old vines in Frankland River, individual batches were aged in barrels (10% new) for additional 15 months before blending. 6% Tempranillo was included in the blend. Powerful, super-sweet and concentrated blackcurrant and blueberry aromas, a litle violet lift and a sprinkle of white pepper. After a buoyant and bright opening, the palate does not disappoint, the creamy ripeness of black fruit persisting, but there's a bittersweet edge to this, a rasp of plum-skin bite to the tannins and edge of the fruit, and keen acidity adding another sharpening angle. The finish is all about fruit, just underpinned by the charry barrel component. Producer Information The "Central Coast," from Santa Barbara to Paso Robles, is emerging as a source of world-class wine grapes. It is from vineyards in this area that we source our grapes. The journey from the vineyard to your glass is a story you will want to hear and learn more about. Wine connects us to the land, the workers, and finally, to the people with whom it is shared. We came to be winery owners and winemakers by going a little overboard in our quest for enjoyable wine tasting experiences. We were pretty serious wine “geeks” for at least 10 years before we switched from the “tasting” side of the bar to the winemaker side. We knew what we loved about wine, as well as a few things we didn’t like, and we work hard to keep the fun side foremost. Much has changed since our first vintage, and we’ve learned a lot, but we have never lost sight of our goal….”make the best wine we can, and make visiting the winery and tasting the wine as enjoyable as possible.”

A big, mouthfilling, soft-textured wine, but there's a kick of acidity and a light grip of tannins to give this some serious intent on the long finish. Reviews: James Suckling: Dark and ripe, with a polished texture and meaty flavors to go with the black plum, licorice and black pepper at the core. A big, mouthfilling, soft-textured wine, but there's a kick of acidity and a light grip of tannins to give this some serious intent on the long finish. Still needs time to settle into itself Producer Information Jim Barry Wines is one of South Australia's most well-known wine producers, having crafted a name for its premium wines made from Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling.

Black cherries, fresh plum, rich dark chocolate and liquorice max out the flavour spectrum. Well measured tannins and slightly toasted oak compliment the rich fruit, creating a wine with many layers. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The fruit this year was sourced from McLaren Vale 100%, and despite the warmer vintage, the 2020 The Boxer Shiraz is slightly lower in alcohol than the following 2021 (the product of a cooler vintage—go figure). Here, the 2020 Boxer is more balanced and settled, and whether that is due to an extra year in bottle or the regional sourcing for fruit (methinks a combo of the two), the wine is showing really well. This is a big volume wine—the biggest in the portfolio—but drinks better than that. The immaculate and highly organized winery, which I visited in June, may have something to do with that. Best After 2022 Wine Spectator: Black licorice, kirsch and Kalamata olive notes are dense and dark, but give way to plush blackberry, blueberry and Earl Grey tea accents. This harmonious version gains complexity on the finish. Drink now Producer Information Mollydooker is a family owned and operated winery based in a charming part of the world that is McLaren Vale, South Australia. Producer Information Our wine takes its name from the original Battle of Bosworth, fought on Bosworth Field, Leicestershire, England in 1485. Here the last of the Plantagenet Kings, Richard the III, was slain by Henry Tudor, becoming the last king of England to die in battle. His death ended the War of the Roses. The roots of our family’s battle were planted in the 1850s with the first Bosworth vineyard in McLaren Vale. Our modern day Battle of Bosworth saw us convert our vineyards to organic viticulture in 1995. The White Boar (see inset) featured on Richard III’s battle standard, and was his personal device or badge. The Boar also features on the labels which go over the top of bottles of ‘White Boar’ and the Battle of Bosworth Chardonnay.

Producer Information Penfolds is Australia's most famous wine producer, best known for its flagship wine Grange, one of the most acclaimed wines in the world. Among many other accolades, the 1955 Grange was named one of the top 12 wines of the 20th Century by Wine Spectator Magazine; the 1971 vintage was ranked as the greatest wine of the 1970s by FINE Wine Magazines and tastingbook.com, and the 2008 gained a perfect 100-point score from both Wine Spectator and Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. Occasionally Grange is 100-percent Shiraz – the 2011 was the sixth time that happened in six decades – but more typically it also contains up to around 15 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. It is the flagship for Penfolds' celebrated multi-vineyard, multi-region blending philosophy, and is sourced from Barossa, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra (occasionally) and Magill Estate at the base of the Adelaide Hills, just to the east of the city. These have been joined by experimental or periodic releases such as the Block 42 Cabernet Sauvignon and Bin 60a Cabernet – Shiraz. In 2018, the portfolio was expanded into California with the release of the Bin 704 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. A desire to introduce a flagship white led to the 1995 debut of the Yattarna Chardonnay of which is still produced to this day. The extensive portfolio includes numerous other bin-numbered releases, the Max's, Koonunga Hill and Cellar Reserve ranges, and a selection of tawny fortified wines.
