Producer: Krug Ratings: WA 97 JS 97 Vintage: 2004 Size: 1.5L ABV: 12.3% Varietal: Champagne Blend Country/Region: France, Champagne At first sight, the beautiful light golden colour promises radiant freshness. The nose begins with an expressive bouquet of ginger, candied citrus and quince, followed by richer notes evoking lemon meringue tart, plum and mirabelle. On the palate, a very balanced Champagne with light notes of brioche and honey giving way to an array of fresh citrus, including oranges, lemons and mandarins, enhanced by a very elegant finish. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Combining subtleness with complexity, the coolish Krug 2004 Brut opens with a highly elegant, fascinatingly clear, bright and refreshing bouquet of ripe (apple) fruits. Dense and round, with a delicate mineral soul, the pure but perfectly balanced 2004 reveals great finesse and weightless elegance with a long and round finish. James Suckling: This is an extremely fresh edition and remains in a restrained mode with an intense serve of Chardonnay's lemon citrus dominating the nose alongside lime zest, bright florals, grassy elements, fresh dough, white stones and very subtle background spice. The palate has a svelte and elegant shape. Smoother than the 2002, it shares the same quality of precision but not the raging power of that vintage. The poise is unquestionable, the wine very reserved, with plenty of lemon-infused citrus flavors, hints of fresh cashew and a lot of potential. Producer Information Krug is one of Champagne's most prestigious houses and its wines are among the most collectible and expensive in Champagne. The house was founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, a native of the Mosel region in Germany, who had moved to France and spent some time working for Jacquesson, the leading Champagne house of the time. Krug's philosophy was that every Champagne should be the best possible expression, and eschewed the common idea of a hierarchy of Champagne. Instead, he began to craft a premium wine from a reserve of wines vinified separately by the growers themselves, a wine that would eventually become the Grande Cuvée. This wine sits alongside the likes of Dom Pérignon and Cristal at the top of the Champagne tree, and is a blend of 120 different wines from 10 or more vintages...

Dom Pérignon dedicated over 40 years to this mission, employing a visionary spirit and daring approach to the wine making process. Over that time, he became known as the "father of champagne" for laying down the fundamental rules for the traditional Champagne production method (La Methode Champenoise or Traditionelle). A favored wine of the Sun King Louis XIV, Dom Pérignon himself compared his wine to "drinking stars".

Producer: Castello di Ama Vintage: 2004 Size: 3L ABV: 13.5% Varietal: Chianti Blend Country/Region: Italy Intense, bright ruby red color in the glass. On the nose, this Chianti Classico is complex and deep, exuding very ripe aromas of wild cherries, dark blueberries and raspberries, along with touches of violet, tobacco, licorice and mint. On the palate, this wine presents a superb richesse and powerful structure, persisting with a fantastic length and remarkable balance. Producer Information Castello di Ama is an Italian producer, found the Chianti Classico region in Tuscany. It is particularly known for its range of single-vineyard Gran Selezione red wines. The estate has about 75 hectares (185 acres) of vineyards, all within a two-miles radius of the village of Ama. Vineyard holdings include the San Lorenzo, La Casuccia and Bellavista plots with each producing a single-vineyard Gran Selezione DOCG. Bellavista is generally regarded as the most elegant, La Casuccia the richest and lushest, with San Lorenzo somewhere in the middle. Castello di Ama also produces a couple of IGT Toscana wines. Haiku is a combination of Sangiovese with Bordeaux varieties whilst a small plot of Merlot in the San Lorenzo vineyard is the source of L'Apparita. Red wines are fermented in vats and then undergo malolactic fermentation in barrels. All of the reds are aged for 12 months in barrique, except for Il Chiuso, which receives six months. Proportions of new oak vary between each wine as well as each vintage.

Cherry, wild strawberry, cigar box and a touch of damp earth. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Slightly deeper colour than RSV. A very expressive nose with more fruit intensity. Cherry, wild strawberry, cigar box and a touch of damp earth. Something slightly Pauillac-like about it! A stern, medium-bodied palate, cohesive and focused, conservative with notes of dried blood, iron amongst the red fruits. Broody, masculine finish with just a light sprinkle of white pepper. Again, there is a stalky quality in the background. A second bottle is similar but more sensuous and feminine. Producer Information Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, or DRC as it is commonly known, is easily Burgundy's best-known and most collectible wine producer. Based in the Burgundy village of Vosne-Romanée, the domaine sells wines from eight different grand cru vineyards that span the length of the Côte d'Or. The most famous comes from the eponymous Romanée-Conti vineyard, and on average is the most expensive wine in the world. The domaine predominately produces Pinot Noir-based wines from 28 hectares (69 acres) of grand cru vineyard. Alongside Romanée-Conti are La Tâche, Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Richebourg in Vosne-Romanée; plus Échezeaux and Grands Échezeaux bottlings. Fruit from Corton-Bressandes, Corton Clos du Roi and Corton Renardes is combined in a single Corton Grand Cru red. There are three white (Chardonnay) wines made. Only one of these, the Montrachet is made widely avilable. A Bâtard-Montrachet and a Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits are not publically distributed.

This is very great Harlan. It pours dark and saturated, and the tannins are big and sturdy, not aggressive, but sweet and finely ground. Still, they give a hardness to the immaculately ripe fruit that mandates cellaring. The flavors of currants, blackberries, plums, chocolate and cedar are lush, deep and long-lasting, but just a part of the balanced appeal of this young wine. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Very deep garnet-black colour with a purple rim. Though still very youthful and muted, this vintage is already subtly revealing a wide array of aromas including blackberry tart, cedar, violets, truffles, liquorice and all spice. In the mouth however this is no shrinking violet – the ’04 is a big, concentrated and highly structured wine with somewhat impenetrable, tightly grained tannins and medium to high acid supporting its rich weight. Very, very long finish displaying hints of savoury earthiness and that signature minerality that appears to surface in better years. Wine Spectator: Firmly structured and tightly wound, with deep, perfumed currant, anise, sage and cedary oak notes, picking up a mineral and pebble edge and ending with a return to the spicy currant fruit. Long and persistent, with tight tannins. Best from 2009 through 2020. 2,126 cases made. Producer Information Harlan Estate is a high-profile, critically-lauded wine producer based in the Oakville AVA of Napa Valley, California. The vineyard is superbly located in the hills above Martha's Vineyard (Heitz Cellar) and To Kalon (Robert Mondavi), just north of Napa town itself. Its Cabernet Sauvignon-based flagship wine is one of California's most sought-after wines, regularly commanding prices exceeding $1000 per bottle. The estate was founded in 1984 by property developer William (known as "Bill") Harlan. He had previously developed the Meadowood resort before buying 240 acres (97 hectares) of steep, densely wooded land above the western Oakville benchlands. Some 40 acres (16 hectares) of this was cleared for vineyards. These are mostly planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, but with smaller amounts of other red Bodeaux...

The wines are fine and charming. The green aromas which appeared after bottling have now been largely integrated: ageing has played its role. Reviews: Allen Meadows: An elegant, pure and naturally spicy nose of violet and black berries trimmed with a touch of crushed leaf and vegetal nuances that merge into rich yet detailed and admirably complex flavors that are relatively forward before dissolving into a floral and dusty finish. Producer Information Domaine Méo-Camuzet is a wine producer located in Vosne-Romanée in the Côte de Nuits. It produces some of the most celebrated wines from the Côte d'Or from a range of grand cru vineyards, including Richebourg, Clos de Vougeot, Corton and Echézeaux. Most of Méo-Camuzet's wines are made from Pinot Noir, and are known for their delicate aromatic concentration. The founder of the estate was Etienne Camuzet, an early-20th Century politician based in Paris, who offered parts of his estate to a variety of sharecroppers to farm. Eventually, it came into the hands of Jean-Nicholas Méo in 1986, who realized that the extensive sharecropping meant that only a small portion of vines were under the domaine's control. He set out a long-term strategy to regain the plots from the sharecroppers who were currently working them, with the goal of eventually having estate-grown fruit and bottling under his own label, Méo-Camuzet. One of these landholders was iconic Burgundy producer Henri Jayer. He had farmed the domaine's land to bottle under his own label for about 40 years. He retired in 1988 and helped to advise Jean-Nicholas on the reacquisition of his vines. Méo-Camuzet now has 14 hectares (35 acres) of vines, including a part of the Cros Parantoux Premier Cru site, which was made famous by Jayer. Most of the vineyards are farmed as organically as possible, but Méo-Camuzet has chosen not to be certified, in order to be able to treat vines as the vintage dictates. Along with the grand cru wines, there are several wines made from premier cru vineyards along the Côte de Nuits, as well as a number of more generic village-level and Bourgogne...

Producer: Chateau Montelena Vintage: 2004 Size: 1.5L ABV: 14% Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon Country/Region: United States, Napa Valley This vintage showcases a rich tapestry of dark fruit flavors, with blackberry and plum harmonizing beautifully with notes of cedar and spice. The wine's full-bodied structure is complemented by velvety tannins and a long, luxurious finish, making it a perfect companion for hearty dishes or an exceptional sipping experience. Producer Information Chateau Montelena is one of the most prominent Napa Valley wineries. It was directly associated with bringing international recognition to the California wine industry through the 1976 Judgment of Paris. Based in Calistoga, it is famous for its varietal Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines. The history of Chateau Montelena began in 1882, when the site of the modern winery was bought by Alfred L. Tubbs. Tubbs built the eponymous chateau and created the A.L. Tubbs Winery in 1888, and by 1896 it was the seventh-largest wine producer in California. Prohibition in the 1920s saw the end of the winery, although the Tubbs family continued to grow and sell grapes. When Prohibition was repealed in 1933 winemaking resumed, A.L. Tubbs wines were unable to find their former success. Tubbs' grandson changed the name to Chateau Montelena, after the nearby Mount Saint Helena, but the winery was sold shortly afterwards. In 1972, Jim Barrett took over ownership and released the first vintage. Chateau Montelena's real success came in the famous 1976 Judgment of Paris tasting, where its 1973 Chardonnay was deemed the best of a lineup of top wines from California and France. The top red wine, the Stag's Leap Cabernet Sauvignon, was also from California. The victory upset the French dominance of the wine industry, catapulting California producers onto the international stage, and opening the door for New World producers. The tasting was covered in Time magazine by George Taber, who went on to write a book about it titled Judgment of Paris, which in turn inspired the 2008 movie Bottle Shock. Since the tasting, a bottle of the winning vintage of Chardonnay has been put on display in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, and the chateau was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Chateau Montelena also successfully led a...

Producer: Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Ratings: WA 95 WS 97 Vintage: 2004 Size: 1.5L ABV: 14% Varietal: Marsanne, Roussanne Country/Region: France, Rhone Bright gold. Intensely spicy pear, peach and apricot pit aromas, with a strong suggestion of sweet butter. Round and weighty but at the same time juicy, with focused peach and pear nectar flavors enlivened by exotic spice and mineral notes and deepened by honey and fresh cream tones. Gains in freshness with air, picking up strong mineral and tangy citrus zest notes. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2004 reveals a light gold color, terrific finesse and elegance in spite of its enormous power, unctuosity, and richness. Of course, it is not as honeyed as the otherworldly 2003 but it is an amazingly full-bodied, powerful wine with pervasive honeysuckle, peach liqueur, and nectarine notes intermixed with licorice, quince, and acacia flowers. Wine Spectator: Very rich, but cuts like a knife, with dried apricot, marzipan and wet stone notes leading the way for richer flavors of candle wax, heather, honey and white peach on the back end. The long, extremely taut finish seems almost tannic; this is built for a long life. Producer Information Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is a powerhouse wine producer absed in the village of Mauves, in the Saint-Joseph region and just over the Rhône river from Hermitage – the source of the estate's most acclaimed wines. Chave's red and white Hermitage – based on Syrah and Marsanne and Roussanne respectively – are some of the most important in the Rhône Valley, commanding both high prices and exceptional, sometimes 100-point scores. The Chave holding counts some 14.5 hectares (36 acres) of land in Hermitage, making it one of the largest land owners in the appellation. The vineyards are terraced and today cover eight different plots on the hill (some of which, including holdings in the likes of the Méal and Bessards sections, are highly coveted), providing a range of mesoclimates and terroirs for the Chave wines. Many of the vines are between 30 and 60 years old. The plots are brought to the winery and vinified separately. Grapes are usually destemmed, and are fermented in stainless steel before being aged for up to 18 months in oak, a small portion of which is new. All of the wines are bottled unfiltered. The finish is quite unique, rich and long lasting. Producer Information Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg is a French producer of high-quality Pinot Noir located in the Côte de Nuits, best known for wines made from the most sought-after vineyards in Burgundy. The domaine was created in 1933 after the marriage of André Mugneret to Jeanne Gibourg of the established Vosne-Romanée Gibourg family. Their son, Georges Mugneret, an ophthalmologist, extended his family's vineyard holdings by buying small plots of land in the 1950s. He began bottling these wines with his own label, Dr Georges Mugneret. The two domaines came together in 2009 under the name of Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg. The vines of Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg had been tended by sharecroppers and remained so even after the merger. Because of this a significant portion of the fruit does not go into Mugneret-Gibourg's wines. The vineyards, however, are some of the most famous and highly regarded in the region, located in esteemed communes such as Nuits-Saint-Georges, Gevery-Chambertin, and Flagey-Echezeaux. The domaine's most prized and expensive wines come from the the grand cru vineyards of Ruchottes Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot and Echézeaux, and the premier cru vineyards Les Chaignots, Les Vignes Rondes and Les Feusselottes. Georges Mugneret-Gibourg is also known for high-quality and ageworthy village-level wines from Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges, and the broadly classified Bourgogne Rouge, which commands an impressive $50 per bottle. Following George's death in 1988 the domaine has been run by his widow Jacqueline, and daughters Marie-Christine Teillaud and Marie-Andrée Nauleau.

Well known for sparkling wines, Korbel makes a range of still wines from various international varieties like Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Korbel also produces an extensive range of brandies. The business was founded in 1882 by the three Korbel brothers, immigrants from what was then known as Bohemia in Europe. They began making sparkling wine using the traditional French méthode champenoise. This remains a cornerstone of production. The most expensive sparkling wine on the list, Le Premier, a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The Korbel Brut is the most popular wine in the range, made from a range of varieties, the wine is intended to be reasonably priced and consistent in favour. The winery was bought in 1954 by Adolph Heck and by 1984 it was under the ownership of Adolph's son, Gary. Under the Heck's ownership, annual production increased from 150,000 cases to 1.3 million and by 2011, Korbel had become the twelfth largest producer in the US. Champagne is a protected name under the rules of the French sparkling wine appellation. Howvever, the lengthy history of Korbel protects its use of the "Champagne" label as this practice predates the introduction of those laws. Korbel sparkling wines have been served at six US presidential inaugurations and Korbel brandy is particularly appreciated in the state of Wisconsin. Korbel Champagne Cellars also founded the Russian River Brewing Company as a venture into beer, although today they no longer own it.

López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Vintage: 2004 Size: 1.5L ABV: 13% Varietal: Rioja Red Blend Country/Region: Spain, Rioja Vibrant red leading slightly towards amber. Light fresh nose with notes of vanilla and dried berry aromas. Rich, very dry, smooth, developed. Firm tannins and good balance. Producer Information R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia is a Rioja producer that is widely regarded as one of the world's greatest wine estates. It was founded in 1877, and is well known for its traditional winemaking approach. It is particularly associated with its Tempranillo-based wines from the Tondonia vineyard, to the extent that this now forms part of the company name. The Tondonia vineyard extends for over 100 hectares (250 acres) in a picturesque site next to the Ebro river. The soil is made up of alluvial clay with a high limestone content, which has proved an excellent terroir for the Tempranillo and Garnacha vines that are planted there. Tondonia provides the grapes for López de Heredia's top wines, both red and white. The flagship wine from the company is the dry, vanilla-laden López de Heredia Gran Reserva. It is predominantly Tempranillo with small amounts of Garnacha and Mazuelo, and sees ten years aging in barrel before release. The Reserva, which adds a little Graciano to the blend, only receives six years. The two nutty, perfumed Viña Tondonia white wines – a Gran Reserva and a Reserva – have the same respective time in oak as the red wines, and are made from Viura with a small amount of Malvasia. An interesting innovation from Tondonia is the Gran Reserva Rosado, which is one of the few rosés in the world released after such long aging (four and a half years) in barrel. R. López de Heredia owns three other vineyards in the Rioja Alta region: Viñas Cubillo, Bosconia and Zaconia. The first two make single-vineyard red wines, while the Zaconia vineyard is planted with white varieties and previously supplied dry wines under that banner, and dessert wines labelled Sauternia. Nowadays, it is the source of the Viña Gravonia oak-aged white made from Viura. The sprawling winery complex neighboring La Rioja Alta in the centre of Haro is the oldest in the town, and one of the first wineries in the entire region. Wines are made in a range of old oak vats of varying size and wood...

Dense, lengthy, and complex. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Purple/black in color with a surreal bouquet of kinky spice, truffle, mineral, and black fruit aromas, on the palate it is remarkably powerful, yet elegant. Mouth-filling, complex, and staggeringly rich. Producer Information Remírez de Ganuza is a Spanish wine producer, located in the Rioja sub region approximately 12 miles (20 kilometers) northeast of Logroño. It is particularly known for its flagship Reserva and Gran Reserva wines of the same name. The estate was founded by former wine-broker Fernándo Remírez de Ganuza in 1989, when he acquired top-quality plots in Rioja Alavesa. Today, vineyard holdings of the company covers six different locations and total more than 80 hectares (200 acres), a majority of which is planted to Tempranillo, Viura and Malvasia. The Remírez de Ganuza is the flagship wine of the portfolio, produced from Tempranillo and complimented with Graciano, Viura and Malvasia. Grape bunches are sorted and seperated into shoulder and tips prior to fermentation which is an incredibly labour intensive process. It is fermented in both stainless steel and French oak vats prior to 26 months of barrel-aging. The Wine Advocate has previously awarded the Remírez de Ganuza 100-points which is the highest possible rating. A selection of other red Reserva wines are included in the portfolio, also principally produced from Tempranillo.

Slightly reduced but complex aromas of black fruits, pepper, violet and minerals. Supple and deep, with a fine-grained texture and solid underlying structure. As creamy as this is, it remains light on its feet. Finishes very long and subtle, with a whiplash of pepper and mineral flavors conveying an impression of strong extract. Reviews: Allen Meadows: There is a hint of the herbal character that typifies many '04s but I stress that it is a nuance and by no means dominant and allows the otherwise pretty and spicy red berry fruit and wet stone aromas to shine. The refined, cool and still notably reserved medium-bodied flavors are delicious though there is a hint of that same herbal character that was found on the nose present on the lightly acid-tinged finish that is tangy but not sharp. Most of the vineyards are farmed as organically as possible, but...

Reviews: John Gilman: The 2004 Clavoillon shows just a bit of reduction (about the same as the village Puligny), but is plenty pretty underneath. The bouquet offers up a blend of lemon, apple, touch of honey, excellent minerality and toasty oak. On the palate the wine is fullish, ample and well-balanced, with good depth and focus, sound acids, and a long, quite intense finish for this cru. Allen Meadows: The reduction this displayed after bottling now dominates the nose and has become, in my view, permanent. Thus, how much you will like this wine necessarily depends on whether moderately strong reduction bothers you or not. By contrast, the highly energetic and vibrant rich, round and detailed medium-bodied flavors possess good extract for the vintage and plenty of punch and persistence on the finish. Partially because of the reduction and partially because of the firm acid spine, this is still quite young though if I am correct about the reduction being permanent, finding the proper drinking window is much more about taste preferences than actual maturity as the nose isn't going to display much ever. Producer Information Domaine Leflaive, based in Puligny-Montrachet, is one of the most important producers in the Côte de Beaune. Focusing almost entirely on white wines made from Chardonnay, the Domaine makes four grand cru wines and four premier crus in Puligny-Montrachet. The Domaine was founded by Joseph Leflaive, a former engineer. In 1905, he purchased vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet which had been ravaged by phylloxera, and set about replanting and expanding them. Upon his death in 1953, his sons Vincent and Jo took over the running of the estate, and are widely credited with building up the reputation that Leflaive enjoys today. In 1990, cousins Anne Claude and Olivier Leflaive took over the running of the estate, with Olivier leaving in 1994 to run his own negociant business. Anne Claude converted the vineyards to biodynamics and is considered a pioneer of that movement in Burgundy. After her death in 2015, her nephew Brice de la Morandiere has taken over the running of Domaine Leflaive. Domaine Leflaive's...

Its focus is on premium Cabernet Sauvignon from single parcels and single vineyards – the most famous of which is the Old Sparky label, produced from the renowned Beckstoffer To Kalon vineyard. Schrader entered the wine industry in 1992, founding Colgin Schrader Cellars with his then-wife Ann Colgin (who would go on to found Colgin Cellars). In 1998, he left to start his own label, bringing on board winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown and grape grower W. Andrew Beckstoffer. Schrader makes a range of wines from Napa, most of which are made from Cabernet Sauvignon. The most significant vineyard associated with the label is the Beckstoffer To Kalon vineyard in Oakville, which provides an excellent growing environment for Cabernet Sauvignon: high mineral content and superb drainage in the soil, lots of sun exposure, and a coastal breeze for cool nights. In 2008, Schrader Cellars became the first winery to receive 100-point reviews from US critic Robert Parker for the same wine across four consecutive vintages, a recognition that it received for two labels, both the Schrader CCS (from the initials of Carol Colesworthy Schrader, Schrader's partner) and the Old Sparky. The small production of Schrader Cellars is mostly distributed through its mailing list, which can have a wait time of two to three years.

Dark and sonorous nose, with lots of creaminess of blackcurrant, and a polished, slightly cedary old polished wood note. The palate displays very good sweetness of fruit. A deep, sweet, core of pure cassis drives through the mid-palate, with a medium-bodied but quite robust and full texture. Reviews: Jeff Leve: With a tobacco, truffle, cedar wood, cigar box and blackberry personality, this is just starting to open. Firm, classic and traditionally styled, there is still some tannin to be resolved Give it another 5 years. Falstaff: As so often, Léoville-Barton stands out for its style and elegance. With fresh fruit and acidity allied to generous tannins, it sums up the character of the 2004 vintage. Very classic in Bordeaux terms: not hugely powerful, but delicious. Producer Information Château Léoville Barton is a well-regarded estate in the Saint-Julien region of Bordeaux, ranked a second growth in the 1855 Classification. Quality has soared since the 1980s, and it is considered one of the most dependable wines in Bordeaux, gaining regular praise for its reasonable pricing. Léoville Barton is Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant, tannic and austere when young but develops intense blackcurrant and cassis notes, as well as classic Saint-Julien cedar characteristics. The vineyard, which has gravel soils over clay, is planted 74 percent to Cabernet Sauvignon, 23 percent to Merlot and 3 percent to Cabernet Franc. After a manual harvest, fermentation takes place in large temperature-controlled wooden vats, and then the wine is aged in 50 percent new oak barrels. There is no château building; that which features on the label belongs to Langoa-Barton, Léoville Barton's sister estate. In 1821, Anglo-Irish wine merchant Hugh Barton bought Château Langoa Barton and a portion of the Léoville estate which became Léoville Barton (the other sections are now Léoville-Poyferré and Léoville-Las Cases). A second wine, La Réserve de Léoville Barton is produced from younger vines and lots which lack the quality and depth of the grand vin. Anthony Barton inherited the two properties from his uncle Ronald in 1983 and guided them through much of the...

Under the fruit, there is a more yeasty character, adding richness. It could well be even better if aged for several years. Producer Information Pommery is a Champagne house located in Reims and claims to be the inventor of the Brut style of Champagne so popular today. It's early history is synonymous with Jeanne-Alexandrine Louise Pommery (commonly refered to as Louise Pommery), who guided the house through its early beginnings to substantial growth in the mid 19th Century. Although the Champagne house was nominally founded in 1856 by Alexandre Louis Pommery and Narcisse Greno, the outlines of the operation are sketched in 1836 when Greno takes control of a Champagne négociant business titled Dubois-Gosset (or Gossart, according to some sources), which subsequently becomes Dubois & Greno. Following the death of Dubois in 1839, Greno finds another partner and the firm's name is changed again, this time to Wibert & Greno. Wilbert pulls out of the business 18 years later and Greno is joined by wool merchant, Alexandre Pommery. On the death of her husband two years later in 1858, Louise Pommery takes her husband's place and shepherds the company through a period of growth and prosperity. Greno's role, if any, in the early stages is unknown, although it is clear Pommery is guiding light of the business and over the next few decades becomes one of the region's largest brands. "[She] possessed, to the highest degree, a taste for risk and for audacious problem-solving," her grandson, Melchior de Polignac, said of her. In 1866, the company name is changed to Veuve Pommery & Fils (Widow Pommery & Son), to mark Pommery's control and her son's entrance into the business. Nonetheless, the business maintains the "Pommery & Greno" title well into the 20th Century. In 1868, Pommery acquires a 50-hectare (120 acre) domain in Reims, dotted by ancient Roman chalk-pits and mines. Work begins to connect the underground galleries into a vast cellar complex, 18km (11 miles) long, with space for aging and storing more than 20 million bottles of Champagne. The house also claims to be the creators of the first Brut champagne – the 1874 vintage of Pommery Nature. Until then, Champagne...

Full-bodied, rich and powerful. Juicy and very flavorful. Reviews: Wine Advocate: A barrel selection coming from the best barrels of Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Old Sparky has a deep garnet-purple color and savory/meaty nose of yeast extract, chargrill, sautéed herbs and smoked meat over a core of crème de cassis, cigar box, red currant jelly and wild blueberries plus a touch of powdered cinnamon. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with black fruit preserves, savory and baking spice layers, with a very firm backbone and very long, multilayered finish. Jeb Dunnuck: A wine that got more than one expletive in my notes, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Old Sparky is a barrel selection and is mostly clone 6 with smaller amounts of clone 4. Pure crème de cassis, blueberries, violets, white chocolate, and white flower notes all soar from this inky 2015 which is full-bodied, powerful, yet weightless and elegant. Its tannins are covered by a wealth of fruit, it has no hard edges, perfect integration of its fruit, tannin, acidity, and alcohol, and a finish that just won’t quit. This is a crazy good wine that couldn’t be any better. Producer Information Schrader Cellars is a cult Napa Valley winery founded by former antiques dealer Fred Schrader. The palate offers a creamy texture with balanced acidity, showcasing tropical fruits, citrus, and a touch of buttery brioche. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Made from an old Wente clone, the 2004 Chardonnay Quarry Vineyard offers notes of lemon oil, crushed rocks, white peaches, and a hint of orange blossoms in a full-bodied, gorgeously textured, super-fresh format buttressed by terrific acidity. This stunning Chardonnay should drink beautifully for 4-5+ years. This Chardonnay tends to be aged in 100% new oak (which is totally concealed) and is bottled without fining or filtration. Consequently, if it has just been shipped or moved, it can reveal a slight haze. Producer Information Aubert is a small Chardonnay and Pinot Noir estate that makes wine from single-vineyard sites in Napa Valley and Sonoma. It was founded by Mark and Teresa Aubert in 1999, and today, is considered to be one of California's cult producers. The first vintage of Aubert was in 2000 – a Chardonnay sourced from the Ritchie Vineyard in Russian River Valley. It quickly received acclaim for its full-blown, hedonistic style and was pivotal for company's success. Although the vineyard is no longer within the company's holdings, the Burgundian syle in which the Ritchie Vineyard Chardonnay was produced, remains as the production style throughout the wine portfolio. The chardonnay wines are barrel-fermented and aged in French oak, a majority of which is new. Aubert's portfolio has since expanded to an array of single-vineyard Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines, sourced from multiple vineyard sites in Russian River and Rutherford as well as Napa and Sonoma. Each wine in Aubert's portfolio is named after the parcel of vineyard from which it is sourced and production is extremely limited. The Lauren vineyard is eight acres (3.2 hectares) of Chardonnnay, named after the founder's daughter and was the first estate vineyard of Aubert. Today, the compnay counts over ten different vineyards within its holdings. Aubert wines are only available through mailing list or from certain...

Outsized and engorged with fruit, but eventually finishes with terrific energetic, peppery lift and thrust. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2004 Ode to E (Syrah) is an incredible blend of 94% Syrah, 4% Grenache and 2% Viognier, all from their estate Eleven Confessions Vineyard, that spent just under four years in oak. Boasting insane notes of creme de cassis, barbecued meats, licorice, exotic spices and singed cedar, this beauty flows onto the palate with a full-bodied, seamless, pure and incredibly layered profile that carries massive fruit and concentration, yet never seems heavy, overdone or puts a foot wrong. It’s the purity of fruit, as well as the overall seamlessness that puts this right up near top of the heap. Drinking perfectly now, it will continue to evolve gracefully for another decade or more. It’s incredible juice and I wish every wine lover could have a sip (or a big glass) of it. Jeb Dunnuck: Utterly mind blowing and showing a spectacularly pure, fresh array of black currant, licorice, mineral, and flowers was the 2004 Sine Qua Non Syrah Ode to E! Its origins can be traced back to the Abbey of Saint Pierre d'Hautvillers in northern France – the so-called birthplace of Champagne. The 17th-Century Benedictine monk Dom Pierre Pérignon is credited with its invention after taking up the position as the abbey's cellarer and procurator in 1668. Pierre Pérignon spent the remaining 47 years of his life striving to create the "best wine in the world", with his wine even gracing the tables of the court of King Louis XIV, the Sun King. To this day the Abbey of Saint Pierre d'Hautvillers houses the "Le Traité de la culture des vignes de Champagne", or the "Treatise on the culture of the vines of Champagne", a manuscript that was penned by Dom Pierre – Pérignon's pupil and successor. The Dom Pérignon brand name was first registered by Eugène Mercier, the founder of Mercier Champagne. He subsequently sold the brand to the Moët & Chandon Champagne house, who used the Dom Pérignon name for its prestige cuvée, first released in 1937. Both Moët & Chandon and Dom Pérignon are now part of the LVMH group. Dom Pérignon has set down its guiding winemaking principles in a manifesto. This document declares Dom Pérignon's commitment to vintage wine blended from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. Each vintage of Dom Pérignon is unique, with grapes sourced from only the best vineyards in Champagne. Unlike most Champagne producers who harvest the grapes early, the preference established under former cellarmaster Richard Geoffroy was to wait for the grapes to ripen slowly. The highly-respected Geoffroy was chef de cave from 1990 to January, 2019, when he handed over the reins to his assistant, Vincent Chaperon. Geoffroy was considered very much the face of the brand and perhaps the best-known figure within the modern Champagne industry.
