Producer: Louise BrisonVintage: 2005 Size: 750ml ABV: 12% Varietal: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir Country/Region: France, Champagne You will appreciate the complexity, elegance, and the finesse of its tertiary aromas; honey, truffles and fresh leather. Producer Information Louis Roederer is a well-regarded Champagne house based in the city of Reims and best-known for its flagship wine: Cristal. The house, established in the late 18th Century, is still family-owned, and produces a house style with equal amounts of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, around one-fifth Pinot Meunier. Although founded in 1776, the house in its current guise began in 1833, when Louis Roederer took the reins from his uncle and renamed the business for himself. Roederer set out to capture foreign markets, and most famously that of Russia; Roederer became the wine of choice for the Russian royal family. Cristal – now one of the region's top prestige cuvées along with the likes of Dom Pérignon (Moët), Belle Époque (Perrier-Jouet), Comtes de Champagne (Taittinger) or Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill (Pol Roger) – was created for the notoriously paranoid Tsar Alexander II of Russia, who requested the bottle be clear and flat-bottomed to prevent hidden explosives. Louis Roederer acquired several grand cru vineyards in Champagne in 1845 to add to his portfolio. This was unusual for the time as the majority of houses were buying grapes from growers rather than cultivating their own. Today, the Roederer vineyards encompass around 240 hectares (600 acres) of land in the Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne and the Côte des Blancs. By 2012, around 25 percent of the vineyards were managed biodynamically (the 2012 Cristal is made from biodynamically farmed grapes). Cristal is produced in standard and rosé formats (although the latter is rarer). The standard vintage Cristal wine is produced from some of the house's best vineyard plots and is composed of around 60 percent Pinot Noir and 40 percent Chardonnay. Portions of the blend can also see some time in barrel. Cristal rosé is produced from similar proportions of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay although the Pinot Noir is left on skins for an extended period prior to pressing. Around 20 percent of the wine is also aged in large format oak, giving the resulting wine a light rosé color combined with hints of onion skin. Cristal wines are also released under the...

Producer: Champagne Louise Brison Vintage: 2005 Size: 1.5L ABV: 12.5% Varietal: Champagne Blend Country/Region: France, Champagne Producer Information Champagne Louise Brison is located in the southern part of the Champagne production area in the Côte des Bar within the Aube region. The region is characterized by Jurassic slopes overlying Kimmeridgian limestone bedrock, and Pinot Noir is the predominant grape. The landscape is quite different than the densely-planted Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs, and Vallée de la Marne to the North. In the Côte des Bar you’ll find vineyards are leisurely interspersed with forests, farms, and streams. It’s quite bucolic and beautiful. Delphine Brulez is the winemaker and owner of Champagne Louise Brison, named after her grandmother Louise Brison who eked out a living in the early 20th century on a few acres of vines at a time when winemaking was not very lucrative. She lived through two World Wars and thanks to her tenacity, the ground work was laid for future generations. It’s not clear to me whether Madame Brison was a widow, or otherwise was obliged to take over the grape growing. The family has growing grapes for generations, but only began making Champagne in 1991.

Cristal wines are also released under the Vinothèque...

On the death of her husband two years later in 1858, Louise Pommery takes her husband's place and shepherds the company through a period of growth and prosperity. Greno's role, if any, in the early stages is unknown, although it is clear Pommery is guiding light of the business and over the next few decades becomes one of the region's largest brands. "[She] possessed, to the highest degree, a taste for risk and for audacious problem-solving," her grandson, Melchior de Polignac, said of her. In 1866, the company name is changed to Veuve Pommery & Fils (Widow Pommery & Son), to mark Pommery's control and her son's entrance into the business. Nonetheless, the business maintains the "Pommery & Greno" title well into the 20th Century. In 1868, Pommery acquires a 50-hectare (120 acre) domain in Reims, dotted by ancient Roman chalk-pits and mines. Work begins to connect the underground galleries into a vast cellar complex, 18km (11 miles) long, with space for aging and storing more than 20 million bottles of Champagne. The palate is well-structured, with a buttery background, hints of apple pie and lemon peel. Producer Information The Goutorbe-Bouillot house is a small grower Champagne estate located in thevillage of Damery just west of Epernay. Family-owned and run since 1911, the 8hectares of 35 different parcels of vineyards extend over the Vallée de la Marne witha focus on Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. The union betweenJules Goutorbe and Louise Bouillot was the origin of the creation of ChampagneGOUTORBE-BOUILLOT. Starting in 1775 the families had been involved in theChampagne business and had been selling their wines to the large Champagnehouses. Today the estate is owned by the Papleux family, and Bastien, the greatgrandson of Jules and Louise, makes the wine and manages the business. Thevineyards extend over a region called Vallée de la Marne (close to Epernay), where, traditionally, the grape variety Pinot Meunier is dominant. The Goutorbe-Bouillothouse is following that tradition, although Chardonnay is becoming more important.Currently more than half of Goutorbe-Bouillot's vineyards are planted to PinotMeunier. The average age of the vineyard parcels is around 35 years old, thoughsome parcels were planted in 1930 and are almost a century old. With great care forquality and the health of the vines, Goutorbe-Bouillot is now certified as "viticulturedurable", which is the highest European standard of sustainable agriculture.Goutorbe-Bouillot Champagnes are produced by a method similar to the Solerasystem. Each year they use 50% of this reserve wine in the blend. This means thatthe wine contains some of all the earlier vintages in decreasing proportions. Thisperpetual reserve was started in 1980 for the Carte d'Or and in 2000 for the othernon-vintage cuvees. The aim is to give more maturity and complexity to the wines. Inorder to keep the natural acidity and aromas from the grapes, the house blocksmalolactic fermentation. Thus the wines are fresher in their youth but gain...

Although the Champagne house was nominally founded in 1856 by Alexandre Louis Pommery and Narcisse Greno, the outlines of the operation are sketched in 1836 when Greno takes control of a Champagne négociant business titled Dubois-Gosset (or Gossart, according to some sources), which subsequently becomes Dubois & Greno. Following the death of Dubois in 1839, Greno finds another partner and the firm's name is changed again, this time to Wibert & Greno. Wilbert pulls out of the business 18 years later and Greno is joined by wool merchant, Alexandre Pommery. The house also claims to be the creators of the first Brut...

On the palate, expect a full-bodied expression boasting notes of spices and chocolate. Producer Information Domaine Bosquet des Papes is an estate in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation of the southern Rhône Valley. It is particularly known for its portfolio of red and white Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines, but also produces a small selection of Côtes du Rhône wines. The domaine was founded by Maurice and Josette Boiron in 1965 although the Boiron family has a history of winemaking that dates back to 1860. Under the management of husband-and-wife team, Nicolas and Jeanne-Claire Boiron (who took over in 2006) the estate has grown to encompass 32 hectares (79 acres) of vineyards. The majority of these vineyards are devoted to the cultivation of red grape varieties destined for the domaine's range of red Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines. It is Grenache that dominates here, closely followed by Syrah, Cinsaut and Mourvèdre. Bosquet des Papes also sets aside a small proportion of its Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards for the cultivation of Clairette, Grenache Blanc and Bourboulenc, destined for Châteauneuf-du-Pape blanc. The estate also makes wines under the Côtes du Rhône title, in particular a red – Bousquet des Boiron – and a Cinsaut-dominant rosé: Le Rosé de Zaza. The soils found in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards are characteristically pebbly and sandy, while the 4ha (10 acres) of vines that make the Côtes du Rhône wine are cultivated in more earthy soils. Grapes are picked by hand and either vinified in thermoregulated concrete vats, in the case of the red wines, or in stainless steel tanks for the white and rosé wines. Domaine Bosquet des Papes ages its red wines for 12-18 months in demi-muids and large oak barrels, while the white and rosé wines will spend approximately six months maturing in stainless steel tanks.

Full-bodied, richly concentrated and textured, it finishes long and nuanced. Producer Information Domaine André Brunel - Les Cailloux is a wine estate located in the Rhône Valley in southern France. Best known for its Châteauneuf-du-Pape bottlings, it also produces Côtes du Rhône and IGP Vaucluse wines. The Brunel family acquired their first vineyard in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the 1600s, but it wasn't until 1954 that the domaine became known as Les Cailloux. The overall domaine name has changed again to reflect expansion beyond that region, though the Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe wines are continue to be labelled most prominently as Les Cailloux. Fabrice Brunel inherited the management of Domaine les Cailloux in 2012, and today oversees 21 hectares (52 acres) of cultivated vineyard in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, as well as 40ha (100 acres) in the Côtes du Rhône winemaking zone, and 30ha (74 acres) of land that is dedicated to the production of IGP Vaucluse wines. The Les Cailloux Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine is a blend dominated by Grenache (70 percent), with smaller quantities of Mourvèdre (17 percent), Syrah (10 percent) and Cinsaut (3 percent). The wine is made from vines that have an average age of 60 years old, and are planted in a combination of gravel, clay and limestone soils. The grapes are harvested by hand and oak is only used sparingly. Each vineyard plot is vinified separately and then blended approximately 15 to 18 months after harvest in a mix of concrete vats and barrels. Cuvée Centenaire is made in exceptional vintages from a selection of vines with an average age over 125 years. It is a 90:10 combination of Grenache and Syrah. The soils for these plots have more clay. Grenache is also the largest component in Cailloux's range of Côte du Rhône and IGP Vaucluse red wines. The white Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes du Rhône wines are predominantly Roussanne with some Grenache Blanc. Le Petit Tracteur is a Vin de France for immediate drinking from vineyards in the north of Orange. It combines 40 percent Grenache...

Producer Information Domaine Denis Mortet is a producer from the village of Gevrey-Chambertin in the Côte de Nuits of northern Burgundy. It is known for its high-quality wines made from Pinot Noir. The wine portfolio of Pinot Noir is produced in modern style with finesse and delicacy, a side step away from traditional Burgundian Pinot Noir. The cuvée collection includes multiple grand crus from Bonne-Mares, Mazis-Chambertin, Échézeaux and Clo-de-Voudeot. At the founding of the domaine, Mortet had 11 acres (4.5 ha) of vineyards but quickly began to expand. Parcels were acquired in the Premier Cru vineyard Lavaux Saint-Jacques in Gevrey-Chambertin as wells as in Motrot, Vellé, Champs and La Côte des Longeroies in Marsannay. The estate continued to expand to its current standing at 27 acres (11.2ha), culminating in the purchase of a portion of the grand cru vineyard Le Chambertin. Denis Mortet eliminated chemical fertilizers and weed killers in 1996 and today, all of the fruit is hand-harvested. In the winery, grape berries are sorted twice to ensure optimal quality. The domaine began in 1956 when Charles Mortet bought a single hectare of vines and began selling fruit to merchant houses. Mortet's son Denis, and his wife Laurence, began working on the estate in 1978 and in the early 1990s, took over and established Domaine Denis Mortet.

Producer: Domaine Baumard Vintage: 2005 Size: 750ml ABV: 12.5% Varietal: Chenin Blanc Country/Region: France, Loire Very enticing, with quince, pear, persimmon and fig aromas and flavors. Yet this is never heavy, only pure and refined, with a lovely, caressing finish. Producer Information Domaine Baumard, in Rochefort-sur-Loire just southwest of Angers, is a sizeable and well-regarded Loire Valley wine producer. The domaine is known for making prime examples of Chenin Blanc from the Savennières, Coteaux du Layon and Quarts de Chaume appellations. The winery also produces a range of labels under broader designations. In all, the estate runs around 40 hectares (99 acres) of organically farmed vineyard land. The vineyards are planted primarily to Chenin Blanc, but also include Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc for the production of Crémant de Loire wines, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc for Baumard's Anjou Rouge. Indeed, Baumard's wine portfolio is expansive, covering white, rosé, red, sweet and sparkling wines. The domaine produces multiple Savennières including a single-vineyard wine from Clos du Papillon, a domaine bottling from Clos St. Yves, and a vintage-dependent cuvée called Trie Spéciale. From vineyards in Coteaux du Layon, the estate produces long-lived sweet wines, in particular from the Quarts de Chaume appellation. The range is broad and extensive, however, with labels covering the full range of geographical levels, from Rosé d'Anjou to Crémant de Loire to Vin de France. The Baumard family has cultivated vines on the estate since 1634, but wasn't until 1955 that Jean Baumard established the domaine and expanded the estate's vineyard land, becoming the first winemaker in Anjou to produce wine from both banks of the Loire river. The domaine has courted controversy in the past for its use of cryoextraction in the production of Quarts de Chaume sweet wines. The practice involves dropping must temperatures to freezing, thus effectively concentrating the juice (the frozen portions of the must are left behind while the sugars, which are more resistant to freezing at lower temperatures, are drawn off for fermentation). The practice was phased out by appellation laws in 2020.

Exotic, opulent aromas of dark berry and cherry preserves, licorice, incense and potpourri. Extremely rich but at the same time lithe and precise, offering sweet, deep raspberry, blueberry and candied floral flavors, plus strong mineral lift. Tannins gain strength on the finish, which leaves behind a wide swath of sweet dark fruits. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Coming from a selection of the top parcels of the estate, and a blend of 43% Grenache, 36% Syrah and 21% Mourvèdre, the 2005 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Cadettes was aged all in smaller barrels prior to bottling. Like the classic cuvee, it’s still youthful and lively, with gorgeous blackberry, cassis, toasted spice, vanilla and charcuterie-like qualities all emerging from the glass. Full-bodied, concentrated and still structured, with the firm tannic spine that’s common in the vintage, it’s nevertheless beautiful today given it’s wealth of fruit and texture. This is a classic, age-worthy Châteauneuf that will have 25+ years of overall longevity when all is said and done. Wine Spectator: This delivers attention-grabbing mocha and cocoa aromas and offers a lush palate of juicy plum sauce, raspberry and boysenberry fruit, with licorice snap and graphite. The long, driven finish is really fine-grained, and this gains steam as it moves along. Producer Information Château La Nerthe is a leading estate in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region of the southern Rhône Valley. The estate has been producing wine since the 12th Century, but its reputation has been largely earned by current proprietors the Richard family, who bought the property in a run-down state in 1985. The red wines are generally regarded as being more softly structured and more modern in style than some of the other top estates. The estate boasts 92 hectares (227 acres) of vineyard, which have been certified organic since 1998. All 13 of the legal varieties for red Châteauneuf-du-Pape are planted, although production centers on Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. The dense, powerful and sappy flavors are still blessed with seemingly endless reserves of dry extract while the supporting tannins, while certainly present, are no longer so prominent as to render the strikingly long finish unduly compact or too tightly wound. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The estate’s flagship 2005 Clos de la Roche Cuvee Vieilles Vignes surges from the glass in an aromatic tidal wave of liqueur-like black raspberry essence, cinnamon spice, praline, chocolate and heady floral sweetness. Incontrovertibly fat and full, not about clarity or discretion but rather about thick, sumptuous layers of flavor that blanket the palate, this will not be every taster’s idea of a great Burgundy or perhaps even a good time. Decanter: The 2005 is still showing a surprisingly deep colour, although the bouquet is beginning to open now. There are notes of black cherry accented with orange peel and a faint suggestion of earthy forest floor aromas, making it among the most open and accessible 2005s that I have tasted recently. The aromas are developed but not alarmingly, and there is plenty of room for future cellaring. The texture is silky and there's no astringency, but the wine has a refreshing acidity that helps keep it lively on the extended finish. Producer Information Domaine Ponsot is a family-owned wine producer in Burgundy. It's early history is synonymous with Jeanne-Alexandrine Louise Pommery (commonly refered to as Louise Pommery), who guided the house through its early beginnings to substantial growth in the mid 19th Century.Although the Champagne house was nominally founded in 1856 by Alexandre Louis Pommery and Narcisse Greno, the outlines of the operation are sketched in 1836 when Greno takes control of a Champagne négociant business titled Dubois-Gosset (or Gossart, according to some sources), which subsequently becomes Dubois & Greno.Following the death of Dubois in 1839, Greno finds another partner and the firm's name is changed again, this time to Wibert & Greno. Wilbert pulls out of the business 18 years later and Greno is joined by wool merchant, Alexandre Pommery.

Producer: Domaine Tempier Vintage: 2005 Size: 750ml ABV: 14.5% Varietal: Mourvedre Country/Region: France, Provence Expect a rich texture with firm tannins, and notes of black fruits, leather, liquorice, and game. Producer Information Domaine Tempier is one of the most significant producers in the Bandol appellation of Provence, in southern France. It is best-known for its structured red wines made from Mourvèdre, but like most producers in the region it also produces rosé. The domaine was established in the 1830s. It grew in prominence under Léonie Tempier, who brought fame to the company in 1885 by winning a gold medal for her Mourvèdre-dominant red wine. However, by the early 20th Century phylloxera had devastated the region's vines and wine industry. Mourvèdre was largely replaced by higher-yield varieties or by different crops altogether. In 1936, Léonie’s great-granddaughter Lucie Tempier married aspiring winemaker Lucien Peyraud. As a wedding present, Peyraud was given an old vintage of Domaine Tempier wine. He was so impressed he joined in an effort to revive pre-phylloxera traditions at the family estate and in Bandol itself. In 1941, Bandol was awarded AOC status, stipulating a minimum of 50 percent Mourvèdre and 18 months of barrel aging for reds. The Peyraud family still plays a significant part in the winemaking process and the domaine remains family-owned. Located near Le Plan du Castellet in the heart of Bandol, Domaine Tempier has vineyards in three different communes: Le Castellet, Le Beausset and La Cadière. It makes four wines from these sites: a standard Bandol and three single-vineyard wines called La Migoua, La Tourtine and Cabassaou. Tempier's Bandol Blanc is mostly Clairette with small amounts of Ugni Blanc, Bourboulenc and Marsanne. The rosé, like the reds, is Mourvèdre-dominant, but the Bandol AOC allows the use of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsaut and Carignan.

Cristal wines are also released...
