It was founded by Pat and Joe Campbell in 1974. The estate has six key vineyards. The Winery Estate plots were the first to be established and sit at elevations of 750 feet (230 meters). The soils are predominantly free draining Willakenzie marine sedimentary. The Winery Estate, in particular, features the Pinot Noir clone, Pommard. Although launched as a blending malt, master blender Jim Milne declared the quality of the bourbon-matured whisky sound enough to be sold as single-malt; however, it was still missing something. Accordingly, the spirit was given a year in sherry casks, which produced a much fuller, and fundamentally, more complex flavour.
