Producer: Kapcsándy Family Winery Ratings: WA 93 WS 92 Vintage: 2009 Size: 1.5L ABV: 14.2% Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon Country/Region: United States, California The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Cuvée is pure, seamless and totally beautiful. Hints of chocolate, cloves and gingerbread appear on the nose, followed by rich, deep layers of fruit. There is a baritone-like expression in the 2009 that is striking. Sweet floral notes appear later, adding lift, vibrancy and freshness. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Cuvee State Lane Vineyard spent 20 months in 100% French oak, and like all the Kapcsandy dry reds came in under 14% alcohol, in this case, 13.5%. A true synthesis between Napa Valley’s bold and exuberant richness and the more subtle elegance of France, this wine exhibits a deep ruby/plum color, hints of white chocolate, black currants, and bouquet garni, decent acidity and a stylish, medium-bodied, spicy, ripe mouthfeel. Wine Spectator: Smooth and richly flavored, offering supple currant, black berry and beef carpaccio. Firms up on the finish, with the flavors gaining traction and detail. The estate was established by Lou Kapcsándy, who had fled his home country of Hungary in the 1950s. In the U.S. he became a petroleum and pharmaceutical engineer, and in his spare time developed a passion for fine French wine. In 2000, he bought the 20 acre (8 hectare) State Lane Vineyard in Yountville which had previously belonged to Beringer, but had been ripped out after an outbreak of phylloxera in 1999. Kapcsándy replanted it to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and produced the first vintage in 2004. The vineyard is more densely planted than most in Napa, which encourages competition between the vines, leading to more intensely flavored fruit. A range of wines are made from...

The finish is quite unique, rich and long-lasting. Producer Information Kapcsándy Family Winery is a wine producer located in the Yountville sub-appellation of Napa Valley, California. It is particularly well-known for its Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon blends, which can reach some high prices and are sold mostly through allocation. The State Lane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon has had 100-point scores from top wine critic Robert Parker for several vintages.

He's your bona fide kissie wynmaker ("kissies" are the grape crates used during harvest), driving as much as 45,000km per year between vineyards, tenaciously accessing some of the finest fruit in the Cape, then making the wines his small cellar at Wildepaardejacht south of Paarl, a serene spot beneath the Du Toitskloof mountains. Then there’s his MCC, under the separate House of GM & Ahrens label and cellared in Franschhoek, further adding to the odometer. His are what Albert describes as "address specific wines", where the unique characteristics of where the grapes are grown matters more than the identity of the grapes themselves. Production volumes are tiny, maybe one to three thousand bottles of each wine, sometimes just a few hundred.

Producer Information Ian Brand, the San Francisco Chronicle’s ‘Winemaker of the Year’ in 2018, produces brilliant and distinctive wines that offer terrific value for California – a state famous for wines that are either incredibly expensive or mass produced. Ian quickly established a reputation for seeking out excellent organic and sustainably farmed vineyard sites with the right mix of soil, aspect, variety, and microclimate. In the winery, Ian looks to be hands off, harvesting quality fruit so that little needs to be done during fermentation. Native yeast, gentle maceration, and minimal oak are all part of the winemaking process. Cedar, pencil, char and dried herb contrast against a richness of milk chocolate as firm tannins take hold and grip the long finish. Producer Information San Antonio Winery is one of the oldest producing wineries in Los Angeles, established in 1917 by Italian immigrant, Santo Cambianica. The winery has vineyards in Paso Robles' El Pomar AVA, as well as in Santa Lucia Highlands, Arroyo Secco and Napa Valley, making a wide range of red, white, sparkling and dessert wines. The flagship wine, under the Riboli Family Wine Estates label, is a Cabernet Sauvignon wine from an estate vineyard in Rutherford. The Los Angeles winery has been a historical landmark since 1965 and remains family-owned after four generations. San Antonio survived Prohibition in the United States by gaining permission to produce altar wines, becoming one of the leading producers of sacramental wines in the region. It still makes a range of sacramental wines today. It is currently run by the third generation of the Riboli family. Along with the Riboli Family Estate wines, there are around 20 brands under the San Antonio umbrella. These include Stella Rosa, San Simeon, Opaque, Kinderwood, Villa Alena, Three Pines, and Maddalena (named after the family's matriarch Maddalena Riboli – niece of founder Santo Cambianica). San Antonio produces a host of value-driven wines from classic varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, and Syrah, to name a few. The operation has three locations: the original property and winery in Los Angeles; a wine store and tasting room in Ontario (California), and a winery in Paso Robles, established in 2016.

Dark, dense, and full-bodied, its mouthfeel is potent yet hardly overbearing. The finish is long and lively, with flavors and sensations that leave a lasting impression. Producer Information The Reynolds Family has been making wine in the Napa Valley since 1999. Steve and Suzie Reynolds planted the Estate Vineyard with hopes of starting a label “for fun.” Not once did they think they would grow a brand to become a fully operating 7,000 case production winery. The vineyard was first planted it in 1996 using “bench grafted vines” which were quite new back then. With bench grafting, the plants are raised at the nursery for one to two years before planting. This cuts about a year off the vine’s development, allowing it to deliver usable fruit in its fourth leaf rather than its fifth. The estate is planted entirely to Cabernet Sauvignon. We grow three clones – 337, 4 and Weimar – on two root stocks: 110R and 3309. The vines are trained in the double cordon method on a single fruiting wire and cordons trained to either side of the trunk. This configuration prevents excessive sunlight exposure so the sugars dont run up before the grapes get a chance to fully ripen. During the growing season we drop close to half of the fruit to select only the best clusters and keep the vines in balance.

It works with growers from a wide number of AVAs and has gained a reputation as one of Sonoma's premier producers for top quality Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Zinfandel. Single vineyard, limited volume releases are a speciality. Around 25 different bottlings have been released in recent vintages. Many of these sites are in cooler, higher sites, often on difficult terrain. The company follows the dictum of "character through adversity", applying it to grapes and vineyards as well as people. Around 15 different Pinot Noirs are made. Fruit for these is sourced from not just the Russian River Valley, but also the Sonma Coast, Green Valley, Carneros, Anderson Valley and Marin appellations, as well as from Oregon. Single vineyard Chardonnay comes from the Sonoma Coast and the Russian River Valley. The latter is the source of the single vineyard Zinfandels from 80 to 100-year-old vines. The vineyards are often small and low-yielding, and the wines are only available on allocation There may be less than 100 cases each of the Hartford Court Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and the Old Vine Zinfandels are similarly scarce. In addition to the single vineyard wines a Russian River Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Zinfandel are made each year. Volumes are sufficient for these wines to turn up on top restaurant lists.

Producer: Grieve Family Winery Ratings: WE 94 Vintage: 2018 Size: 750ml ABV: 14.2% Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc Country/Region: United States, Napa Valley The near-perfect growing season promoted an incredibly vivid core of melon and stone fruit buoyed by bright acidity and finessed by a lilting, wet stone impression that lingers on the long, refreshing finish. Reviews: Wine Enthusiast: From a 60-acre estate in the Lovall Valley, this white is made by the team at Atelier Melka and 100% varietal, given 17 months in new French oak and concrete egg. Fresh in peach and candied ginger, it shows lovely, well-integrated acidity and impressive texture, with length and brightness throughout. Producer Information After some persuasion, David Grieve convinced Vance Rose that the Lovall Valley vineyard was exceptional and from that collaboration we now have the Grieve Family Winery Sauvignon Blanc! Lovall Valley occupies a unique position geographically, climatically, viticulturally and historically. Located between the towns of Napa and Sonoma straddling the county line just north of Carneros, Lovall Valley is only 1.25 miles long and less than a half-mile wide and is the last pocket before the Mayacamas Mountains give way to Carneros and the San Pablo Bay to the south. Accessible only from Sonoma, yet located in Napa County, Lovall Valley sits at approximately 650 feet above sea level and is bordered on the west by Arrowhead Mountain. Huichica Creek runs the length of the valley bisecting the Grieve Family Vineyard, supplying it with moisture and extending the growing season.

Approachable, though the finish has some latent grip so there's no rush.

The palate shows Clos de Betz's characteristic weight and density in spades, expressing freshness with almost distilled richness and concentration. Flavors of black and red raspberry, dark chocolate, anise, and orange peel lead into a long, intense, and mouthwatering finish. Reviews: Wine Advocate: A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, the 2017 Clos de Betz has a vibrant expression on the nose, with plush, generous fruit aromas and an underlying brooding tightness. Full-bodied on the palate, the fleshy, plump fruit tones deliver a velvety lushness over the mid-palate, then the wine becomes more dusty and rigid on the finish, ending with oak spices that linger. I will revisit this swine in 36 months, as I suspect it will show better at a later date. This will easily last a decade and more. James Suckling: This is really beautiful with chocolate and tile aromas and flavors. Medium to full body, round and polished tannins and a flavorful finish. Refined. A range of wines are made from this fruit, including the flagship Estate Cuvée Cabernet Sauvignon, of which also has small portions of Merlot and Petit Verdot. In homage to Kapcsándy's motherland, a Furmint varietal wine is produced, a grape variety more commonly associated with Tokaji, the most famous wine of Hungary. It is the only white wine within the Kapcsándy collection, the remaining are produced from the Napa stalwart varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.

Its deeper ruby hue is followed by a richer, medium to full-bodied, stunning Pinot Noir that offers ample black raspberry and redcurrants fruit as well as forest floor, black tea, sappy flowers, and a kiss of salty, mineral-like nuances on the palate.
