On the palate, there is an impeccable balance of fruit, floral and earthy elements. Long finish with excellent depth. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2010 Beaune Clos des Mouches Rouge has an engaging spicy, peppery nose while the palate is vibrant with crisp tannins and displays greater focus than its white namesake this year. Crunchy red fruit in the mouth with a long spicy finish that leaves the mouth tingling. This is an excellent Beaune in possession of the backbone to age. Wine Enthusiast: This rich, powerful and juicy wine is just bursting out of its wood aging bounds. It has opulent red-berry flavors, a core of firm tannins and intense acidity. Ripe and fruity, this is full of aging potential. Producer Information Joseph Drouhin is one of Burgundy's most important wine producers. Stunning concentration with everything balanced on a pinhead. The underlying structure is enormous, but beautifully integrated in the rich and full body. Bright and pure finish that extends a really long way out. Reviews: Jasper Morris: Pale lemon colour. The power is immediately apparent on the nose, but in a good way. A wine for longer elevage before bottling and then worth the wait in bottle thereafter. This has all the expected volume of white fruit while retaining impeccable balance. Adds depth with time in the glass, before reaching quite a saline finish. A very youthful but impressive Clos des Mouches. I recently enjoyed a stunning bottle of the 2017, and this could very well match it in due course. Wine Advocate: The 2020 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc (Domaine) wafts from the glass with aromas of honeyed pears, freshly baked bread, buttery pastry, Meyer lemon and baking spices. Medium to full-bodied, ample and enveloping, its textural attack segues into a fleshy but vibrant core of fruit and a long, saline finish. Reviews: Vinous: The 2020 Beaune Clos des Mouches 1er Cru, which comes from deeper soils than the Beaune Grèves, has a mixture of red and black fruit and is a touch more expressive with a discrete marine influence. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, very layered with a gentle but insistent grip on the finish. This is one of the finest Clos des Mouches that I have tasted. Wine Advocate: One of the highlights of the range is the 2020 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches (Domaine), a nicely balanced cuvée that wafts from the glass with aromas of cassis, raspberries, orange rind, loamy soil and peonies. When the wine is more mature, the nose is surprisingly strong and fifteen minutes of aeration produce wonderful notes of white truffle, citron, honey and nutmeg, elegantly meshed together. Very lively on the palate. Reviews: Decanter: This wine's ripe apple fruit aroma shows accents of butter, hawthorn flowers, and spice. The texture is ripe, and there is almost a suggestion of honey on the palate. However, the ripeness is not exaggerated, and balanced acidity brings this to a satisfying conclusion. The grapes come from Drouhin's two parcels that total 6.42 hectares in the zone on the southern edge of Beaune. They are pressed as whole clusters and fermented on native yeasts in cask (25% new). This will drink well young and should age nicely for a decade. Jasper Morris: I was fortunate to be able to taste this wine as there were almost no grapes at all, yielding between 2 and 5 hl/ha. A little more yellow, a light primrose colour. An attractive vibrant fresh fruit with a few citrus notes, even some orange blossom. Good depth here, with a soft oakiness. The mouth feel of the middle weight flavors is also a bit more refined though they don't possess the same level of concentration, power or supporting structure. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Noticeably deep in color, it has a tight blackberry and briary-scented nose that needs to develop a little more complexity and tension. The palate is dense on the entry, well balanced and showing some oak at the moment that will need to be subsumed. There is respectable weight and substance here, a touch of chewiness but decent length. Vinous: Good medium red. Ripe aromas of strawberry, mocha and earth. Surprisingly supple and pliant but with good grip and acidity to the cherry, licorice and spice flavors. Finishes clean if a bit folded in on itself, with a positive peppery accent. Powerful yet in balance, with good energy, as ripe as it can get away with, no vulgar tannins. Reviews: Vinous: The 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is mixture of estate and contracted fruit – about two-thirds and one-third, respectively. It has a powerful bouquet of dark cherries and boysenberry fruit, maybe just needing a little more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit on the entry and good grip. More sinewy than other Clos Vougeot tasted. There is a subtle but welcome tang of white pepper on the aftertaste thanks to the 40% whole cluster. Wine Advocate: Aromas of cassis, orange rind, plums, incense and loamy soil preface the 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, a medium to full-bodied, muscular and concentrated wine that's deep and youthfully structured, standing out as one of the blockier, more introverted wines in a very suave portfolio from Drouhin. This is a fine proposition for the long haul. The 2019 vintage has turned out beautifully at this address, delivering wines of immense charm, and it was a pleasure tasting through this selection with Véronique Drouhin. These textural, sumptuous whites will offer considerable immediate appeal—even if Drouhin's two bottlings from the holdings of the Marquis de Laguiche are also built for the cellar—but it's the perfumed, vibrant and enveloping reds that really steal the show this year. To my palate, of all the region's important houses, Drouhin's style places the greatest premium on aromatic range and structural finesse; and the 2019 reds compellingly exemplify those aesthetic priorities. Reviews: Burghound: A complex and relatively elegant nose offers up notes of red currant, raspberry, black cherry and a hint of anise. There is a supple and markedly silky texture to the mid-palate thanks to the notably fine-grained tannins, all wrapped in a linear and moderately austere finish. While certainly very pretty, this doesn't seem to be at its usual level of excellence. Jancis Robinson: Bright crimson. Broad pretty fruit, very alluring and easy to love. Producer: Joseph Drouhin Vintage: 1996 Size: 750ml ABV: 13% Varietal: Chardonnay Country/Region: France, Burgundy An outstanding wine. Pale yellow colour. Complex floral nose of white lilac and white rose. Once open, fruity aromas come to the fore, evolving towards grilled hazelnut and almond. When the wine is more mature, the nose is surprisingly strong and fifteen minutes of aeration produce wonderful notes of white truffle, citron (cedrat), honey and nutmeg, elegantly meshed together. Very lively on the palate. Its rich texture is in evidence, but also its structure and minerality. It is round, but never heavy. Harmonious fullness in the aftertaste. Producer Information Joseph Drouhin is one of Burgundy's most important wine producers. Reviews: James Suckling: The 2013 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru comes from their own contract parcel and purchased fruit, cropped October 6-7, with partial whole cluster and raised for 14 months in 500 liter barrels. It appears to have more harmony than the Charmes-Chambertin at the moment, more floral in personality, to the point where it is more Charmes-Chambertin than the Charmes-Chambertin! The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, supple in the mouth, with good volume. There is plenty of red and black fruit here. although it is missing a little complexity toward the finish. Burghound: Mildly toasty aromas are comprised by notes of a beautiful array of spice elements, poached plum, cassis and floral hints that include rose petal and violet. There is a lovely sleekness to the intense, delicious and strikingly textured big-bodied flavors that are caressing yet powerful and muscular on the saline-inflected, very firm and gorgeously persistent finale. This is sleeker and more refined than the Grands Ech though the medium plus weight flavors possess no better mid-palate concentration or power. There is plenty of the hallmark minerality and I very much like the texture on the balanced, persistent and harmonious finale. A wine of class and grace that should also age for years. Reviews: Vinous: The 2017 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru includes 40% whole cluster fruit and contains both estate and purchased fruit. It has a lovely bouquet of dark berry fruit laced with bergamot and undergrowth aromas, beautifully defined, with real Pinoté shining through. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit. There is wonderful balance here, and a subtle spiciness comes through on the finish. This is one of Drouhin’s best 2017 reds. John Gilman: The 2017 Chambertin “Clos de Bèze” from Maison Joseph Drouhin this year is a combination of the domaine’s own fruit and some purchased grapes. The wine includes forty percent whole clusters and was a cask sample at the time of our tasting. The bouquet is nicely reserved in profile and very complex, offering up scents of red and black cherries, gorgeous spice tones, mustard seed, grilled meats, a fine base of soil, a touch of youthful stems, woodsmoke, raw cocoa and smoky new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and pure, with a sappy core, velvety tannins and lovely length and grip on the complex and very promising finish. This is not as overtly sappy and seductive out of the blocks as the stunning 2017 Charmes-Chambertin, but it may well catch up with it in the fullness of time. The long aftertaste brings back the aromas of cherry and licorice: a kaleidoscope of sensations. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2016 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru was made from two cuvées, one destemmed and the other not, so that there is around 30% whole bunch. It has a very well-defined bouquet with outstanding tension and focus. The palate is pure and silky smooth, more red fruit than black, very harmonious with very well-integrated new oak (80%). This is the best that the domaine has ever made. Period. Burghound: Once again this is distinctly restrained in style with its cool and attractively refined nose that features a broad mix of super-spicy and floral-inflected aromas that include violet, plum and black raspberry. There is ample minerality and dry extract to the full-bodied and solidly powerful flavors that possess that wonderful sense of underlying tension that carries over to the rich and mouth coating finish. This positively gorgeous effort is crafted in a very firm but not hard package that like all of these grands crus, will require extended patience if you wish to see it at its apogee. Burghound: This is more obviously 2018 in style with its intensely spicy and notably ripe aromas of plum, cassis and red currant that are markedly floral in character. The lilting and refined middle weight flavors possess evident minerality on the much more complex, longer and firmer finish. This is a beautifully elegant wine and while I often slightly prefer the Griotte chez Drouhin, in 2018 it appears that the Bèze is the more interesting of the two, at least at this early stage. Producer Information Joseph Drouhin is one of Burgundy's most important wine producers. Founded in Beaune in 1880, the domaine has expanded throughout the 20th Century to include vineyards in Chablis, the Côte de Nuits, the Côte de Beaune and the Côte Chalonnaise, making everything from simple, village-level cuvées to highly priced grand cru and premier cru wines from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The domaine was started by the eponymous Drouhin, who established the company's headquarters in the city of Beaune in the late 19th Century. His son, Maurice, began to acquire vineyards in the early 20th Century, starting with the now-iconic Clos des Mouches vineyard. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s Joseph Drouhin began to expand its land holdings in Chablis and, in 1988, the domaine established a vineyard in Oregon, in the United States. Firm, dry, almost dusty. Embryonic and powder-fine. Light touch with a long juicy finish and a dry depth of fruit. Reviews: Burghound: As with several wines in the range there is a noticeable touch of menthol adding a top note to the earthy black raspberry aromas. There is fine mid-palate density and dry extract that imparts a velvety mouth feel to the delicious broad-shouldered flavors that possess excellent length on the very firmly structured and moderately austere finale. This will very definitely need at least 8 to 10 years of cellar time and 15 to 18 would be better. Wine Advocate: Tasted blind at Fine & Rare Wines' Clos Vougeot tasting, the 2013 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru from Maison Joseph Drouhin has a light and breezy nose, not as complex as others, but with attractive red cherry, crushed strawberry and violet aromas. It actually gains more nuance as it opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with nicely interwoven new oak. Modest weight in the mouth, what I like here is the well-judged acidity that maintains tension from start to finish. It needs time to fully subsume the wood; and to quibble, it needs more persistence. But at its core is a really quite pretty, comely Clos Vougeot. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru from Joseph Drouhin was another Clos-de-Bèze (alongside that of Chanson's) that completely surpassed its showing out of barrel. It has a clean and refined bouquet with cola-tinged red berry fruit (cranberry leaf and raspberry) with touches of rooibos and bergamot emerging just behind. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannin, impressive depth but with some new oak that clearly needs to be assimilated. Everything is being held back at the moment, but the class and stature here. Burghound: A spicy, cool and highly restrained nose features notes of various red berries, earth, humus and a hint of the sauvage. There is plenty of minerality that adds lift to the relatively supple middle weight flavors that are shaped by fine-grained tannins, all wrapped in a toasty finish Producer Information Joseph Drouhin is one of Burgundy's most important wine producers.
