Producer: Chimney Rock Vintage: 2012 Size: 750ml ABV: 14% Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon Country/Region: United States, Napa Valley Delicate and impressive depth on the nose. The finish is quite unique, rich and long-lasting. Producer Information Chimney Rock is a Californian wine producer, located off the Silverado Trail in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. It is best known for its individualistic, single-vineyard red wines produced from Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate was bought in 1980 by Hack and Stella Wilson, who planted 24 hectares (59 acres) of various red and white grape varieties. Soon after the first vintage in 1989, phylloxera hit the vineyard, forcing the replanting of the entire property. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise, however, as the Wilsons were able to replant with a focus on the Bordeaux varieties – mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, with blocks of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The wine portfolio of Chimney Rock showcases terroir, with a majority of wines produced from a single vineyard block. The most notable of these include the Alpine Vineyard, Arete, Clone 7, Ganymede Vineyard, and Tomahawk Vineyard wines, all of which are characteristic of the Stags Leap District, with concentrated fruit intermingling with notes of sage, violet, and graphite. In 2004, the Wilsons sold Chimney Rock to the Terlato family, owners of a global portfolio of wine brands.

The palate shows marvelous tension and structure, showcasing red berries, floral notes and ultra-fine tannins. Producer Information Massimo di Costanzo is part of the new generation of Napa winemakers crafting balanced, elegant wines that evoke an earlier, “classic” era in California winemaking. Di Costanzo, born and raised in the Bay Area, spent his childhood summers in Florence and Positano, Italy, visiting grandparents, family, and developing a deep understanding for the connection between a place and its culinary and viticultural traditions. After graduating from UC Davis, Massimo worked under influential winemakers in Tuscany, Stellenbosch, Mendoza, and Napa. In 2006 he returned to Napa as the day to day winemaker for Screaming Eagle for the 2006 and 2007 vintages. It was here, under the guidance of Andy Erickson, that Massimo began to articulate his own winemaking vision, both philosophically and in the wine. The goal is to make wines with a timeless, ageworthy style that value transparency, terroir, and elegance over sheer force and concentration. His approach emphasizes the purity of fruit by limiting manipulation throughout every phase of the winemaking process: harvesting at moderate brix levels, fermentation in small stainless steel vats, aging in mostly used French oak, and bottling without fining or filtration.

A beautiful nose of red and black cherries, blackcurrants, spice box and earth jumps from the glass of this expressive, fragrant, medium-bodied wine that has velvety tannins, a burgeoning complexity and a savory, lush mouthfeel. This is a strong second wine from this famous vineyard. It can be drunk now or cellared for up to 15 or more years. It’s pure seductiveness. James Suckling: This is a savory and balanced second wine with plum, berry and spices such as cloves and pepper. Full-bodied and velvety with bright acidity underneath and a flavorful finish. They say they used a little press wine in this and it gives it a lift. Lots of currants too. Traditional. 71% cabernet sauvignon, 8% cabernet franc, 6% merlot, 4% malbec, and 11% petit verdot. Drink or hold. Producer Information First planted to vines in the 1880s, Eisele Vineyard sits in the northeast Napa Valley, just east of Calistoga at the base of the Palisades Mountain range. Farmed organically since 1998 and biodynamically since 2000, the site has been principally dedicated to Cabernet Sauvignon for the last fifty years. Beginning with the inaugural release bearing the Eisele name in 1971, this iconic vineyard has received consistent recognition for possessing one of the great terroirs of Napa Valley. The wines invariably express the exceptional depth, elegance and longevity which are hallmarks of the Eisele Vineyard. When we arrived at Araujo Estate in 2013, forty vintages had already carried the Eisele Vineyard designation. We admire and respect these wines immensely. Their exceptional balance, elegance and restraint spoke to us, and we found the expression of terroir to be pure, honest and unmistakable. We were captivated and humbled, knowing that giving voice to this place would be both a privilege and a challenge. As we...

Lovely from start to finish. Reviews: Wine Advocate: They appear to be immune to some of winedom’s less than intelligent trends and fads that we see from time to time, and the result is a spectacular 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon 40th Anniversary offering. Its dense purple/black color is followed by copious quantities of crème de cassis and blackberry fruit, silky tannins, a voluptuous texture and stunning purity as well as length. This full-bodied effort is a fabulous example of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon as well as a tribute to this amazing family. Wine Spectator: Lavishly oaked, with creamy mocha, vanilla, cedar and anise notes at the edge of a rich core of dark berry, plum and black licorice flavors. Tight, focused and persistent, showing a seductive character. Producer Information Caymus Vineyards is a well-regared and relatively historic wine producer based in Rutherford, in California's Napa Valley. Like most of the valley's famous producers, it specializes in top-end wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon. Its top wine, the Caymus Vineyard Special Selection, is notable for having been the only wine to have twice topped Wine Spectator's Top 100 list. This was achieved with its 1984 and 1990 vintages. The first vintage of Caymus was in 1972, although the Rutherford property, owned by the Wagner family, has been planted to grapes since the 1940s. These were sold to other producers in Napa until the 19-year-old Chuck Wagner agreed to help his parents establish a winery on their ranch. Today, Caymus Vineyards is still family owned and operated, with various wines made by Chuck's sons Joe and Charlie, and his daughter, Jenny.

It is most famous for its premium wines produced from Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sangiovese. The 20-hectare (50-acre) vineyard passed through many different hands before the Staglin family became the proprietors in 1985 – including a Texan gold and oil tycoon on the run from the law in his home state, as well as the more respectable Beaulieu Vineyard. Located at the base of Mount St. John, the estate vineyard lies on an alluvial fan of volcanic soils. These soils, when combined with the area's unique mesoclimate, provides ideal growing conditions for vines with the first vineyard established as far back as the mid 1860s. The flagship Staglin Family Vineyard range includes Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, the latter commonly blended with small portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Other wine ranges in the collection include the Salus range with a Bordeaux Blend amoungst other varietal wines. Salus was named after the Roman goddess of health and wellbeing with profits for the Salus range contributed to the funding of mental health research.

On the palate, the wine opens up to reveal an earthiness, with brown spice, cigar box and ripe dark fruits that linger throughout the extracted and long finish. The texture is opulent and rich, yet has a velvety quality with supple density. Rich, fine-grained tannins are balanced with ripe fruit, acidity and oak. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection has a dense blackish/purple color and creamy, sweet crème de cassis fruit, blackberries, a touch of graphite and vanilla, This exuberant, boisterous, in-your-face style of Cabernet Sauvignon is clearly a fruit bomb, so be warned. Full-bodied and opulent with stunning concentration and richness, the wine has no hard edges and is much in the Caymus style of terrific fruit intensity (most of it black and blue), voluptuous texture, and a stunning finish with plenty of glycerin, wood and spice. The alcohol on the label is listed at 14.8%, which seems about accurate. I have Caymus Special Selection in my cellar back to some of the historic wines made by Chuck Wagner’s father in the early 1970s, and while the style’s gotten more precocious and consumer-friendly, these wines, even the more latter-day styles, have a tendency to age beautifully. Wine Spectator: Exhibits a delicious, up-front core of juicy dark berry, blackberry, black licorice and creamy, toasty, vanilla-scented oak. Appropriately tannic and structured, this is made in a style you can drink now or cellar for up to a decade. The nose is opulent and ripe with cassis, blackberry, forest floor and subtle toasty oak. On the palate it is full-bodied yet velvety and has an endlessly complex finish. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, is a relatively powerful statement from the new owners. Dense ruby/purple in color, with an exceptional nose of crème de cassis, a touch of mulberry and spice. The oak is completely obscured by the lavish, concentrated, ripe fruit and multi-dimensional mid-palate that expands beautifully, but with no sense of heaviness. The wine is rich and full-bodied, but with velvety tannin and stunning purple and black fruits. This is a beauty, with savoriness that’s hard to articulate. The finish goes on for a good 45+ seconds. James Suckling: The aromas to this wine are very complex and brooding with blackcurrants, sage and spearmint. Souis bois and wet earth then turn to black fruits. Entrancing nose. This is full-bodied, yet tight and focused with compressed tannins and a long finish. Very intense volcanic sea salt to the wines. A much more subtle and mind-provoking style. Producer Information Araujo Estate is a Napa Valley estate particularly associated with its noted Eisele vineyard and the flagship Cabernet Sauvignon grown there. It is regarded as one of California's cult wineries and was included in Robert Parker's 2005 book, "The World's Greatest Wine Estates". The 38-acre (15-hectare) Eisele vineyard is located on an old alluvial fan near the northern end of the Napa Valley, just east of Calistoga. It is protected by the Palisades Mountain to the north and cooled by westerly breezes, and produces a low-yielding crop of very concentrated fruit. It was originally planted in the 1880s to Zinfandel and Riesling, with the first Cabernet not planted until 1964. Now, 75 percent of the vineyard is planted to Bordeaux red varieties – mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with some Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. Along with a delicate supporting role of oak and tannin, it offers black cherry, graphite and dried herb to enjoy, as well as a powerful hit of concentration on the finish. Producer Information Stonestreet Estate Vineyards is a California wine producer in Sonoma County's sub-appellation Alexander Valley. It is best known for its range of single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines. Stonestreet was founded by Jess Jackson in 1989, after the purchased of the Zellerbach winery. Jackson was the founder of the major distributor Jackson Family Wines and was half of the namesake for the brand Kendall-Jackson. The estate vineyards comprise roughly 400 hectares (1000 acres) on a undulating property within the foothills of the Mayacamas mountains. Vineyards are planted across the property and range in elevation from 400 to 2400 feet (120-730m) above sea level. The significant difference in elevations, vine-spacing, and various aspects and exposures of the plots mean the estate has an array of mesoclimates. Individual plots demand different farming practices dictated by the specifics of the vineyard site. Stonestreet has multiple ranges within the wineportfolio. The Single Vineyard collection is sourced from Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay whilst the Estate collection includes varietal wines from multiple estate vineyards. The Library Wines is a selection that have aged in the cellar for at least ten years.

Producer Information Blue Rock is a historic, private destination in the heart of the Sonoma/Napa wine country. The winery, vineyard, and gardens were established in the 1880s by Italian immigrants. Originally named Villa Maria, the winery did not survive Prohibition. Other families attempted to farm the property, but it fell into foreclosure in the late 1980s. Kenny and Cheryl Kahn came upon the rundown estate in 1987 and promptly fell in love with the beauty of the hillside location and the bucolic Alexander Valley. The estate suffered from years of neglect, and the derelict vineyard needed replanting. Kenny and Cheryl have spent 32 years renovating the original winery and estate cottage, as well as establishing winemaking and production facilities. The Winery, guesthouse, and gardens have now been upgraded to a true \ luxury standard and with the singular vision of creating a world-class wine estate in the European tradition. Blue Rock is family-owned, family-farmed and certified sustainable. The name originates from the soil studded with blue pebbles, rocks, and boulders of serpentine. The serpentine rock contributes to the unique flavor and aromatic profile of the wines deriving from the vineyard. Comprised of 40 acres, the certified sustainable vineyard is planted to the five Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Malbec, and Syrah. Vineyard work and harvest are done by hand, with attention to detail and process. Our workers are full-time and enjoy a year-round relationship with the vines which makes for better quality.

On the palate it is very elegant, rich and full-bodied. Producer Information Cliff Lede Vineyards is a winery located in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley, California. It was established in 2002 by Canadian construction magnate Cliff Lede, and produces wines from Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. The most famous wine is the flagship Cabernet Sauvignon: Poetry. When Lede bought the property, he asked famed viticulturalist David Abreu to replant the 24 hectares (60 acres) of vineyards. These vineyards cover steep slopes in the Stags Leap AVA, and are planted on shallow volcanic soils that stress the vines and result in concentrated, complex fruit. The estate is made up of two vineyards, the Poetry vineyard and the Twin Peaks vineyard, and each are separated into blocks named after some of Lede's favorite songs and albums – giving them the nickname the "Rock Blocks". In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, a tiny amount of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot is grown as well. The Cliff Lede winery was completed in 2005. Grapes are hand-sorted then evaluated by a Pellenc optical sorting machine, which only selects the grapes that are within the parameters set by the winemaker. The grapes are fermented in tanks based on the design of Château Latour, before being aged in new French oak. The Sauvignon Blanc is fermented in concrete eggs, giving a distinct minerality to the finished wines. The wines, particularly the flagship Poetry, regularly receive good reviews from the press, with the American wine critic Robert Parker calling the Cabernet Sauvignon "bottled perfection" and awarding the 2013 vintage with 100 points.

Producer: Chimney Rock Vintage: 2015 Size: 750ml ABV: 14.5% Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon Country/Region: United States, Napa Valley Chimney Rock Ganymede Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon wine, hailing from the esteemed Napa Valley in California, is a delightful expression of the classic red varietal. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, this wine showcases the depth and complexity synonymous with the region. With rich, dark fruit aromas of blackberry and cassis, complemented by hints of tobacco and earth, the nose entices you to take a sip. On the palate, luscious flavors of black cherry and plum mingle with notes of vanilla and spice, leading to a long, velvety finish. Perfectly balanced and age-worthy, this Cabernet Sauvignon truly embodies elegance and finesse. The wine portfolio of Chimney Rock's showcases terroir, with a majority of wines produced from a single vineyard block. The most notable of these include the Alpine Vineyard, Arete, Clone 7, Ganymede Vineyard, and Tomahawk Vineyard wines, all of which are characteristic of the Stags Leap District, with concentrated fruit intermingling with notes of sage, violet and graphite. In 2004, the Wilsons sold Chimney Rock to the Terlato family, owners of a global portfolio of wine brands.

Slowly unfolds to reveal more nuances, suggesting that this may develop for some time. Prominent tannins. Producer Information Saxum Vineyards is a Californian wine producer in the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles. It is known for its portfolio of red blends produced from the key Rhône varieties: Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. The estate was planted at the end of the 1980s with a majority of vines now over 40 years of age. Located a mere 10 miles (16km) from the coast, unearthed fossilized whale bones have been discovered here requiring a jack hammer to plant the vines. Planted throughout an undulating landscape the vineyards are located on slopes at an altitude of approximately 1200 feet (365 meters). Saxum's portfolio now features a collection of proprietary cuvées. The Rhône varieties reign supreme, but there are small plantings of other grapes like Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, which are used in small amounts. Strict yields inform the limited production of roughly 5500 cases annually. The flagship wine is the James Berry vineyard red blend, made from Grenache with Mourvèdre, Syrah and Counoise. The Syrah is co-fermented with small amounts of Roussanne instead of Viognier, the white variety commonly blended with Syrah in northern Rhône appellations.

The estate was founded by the Regusci family and is particularly known for its red wines based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Gaetano Regusci purchased the 19th Century property, now known as Regusci Ranch, in 1932. He dedicated the land to agriculture, setting aside a small area for the production of homemade wine. It wasn't until the estate passed to his son Angelo Regusci in the 1960s that focus turned to the cultivation of Bordeaux red grape varieties, leading to the establishment of Regusci Winery by Angelo's son, Jim Regusci, in the late 1990s. Today, the estate has 65 hectares (160 acres) of vineyards, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Chardonnay. The property uses sustainable farming methods, including the recycling of winery waste and composting. The Regusci Winery range is dominated by its Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines, with the estate producing several varietal Cabernet Sauvignon wines, including The Elders and Block 3, and a Cabernet Sauvignon-predominant blend, Patriarch. The pinnacle of the estate's portfolio is its Angelo's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, which spends approximately 22 months in American oak barrels before bottling and release.
