Producer: Le Clos des Fées Vintage: 2014 Size: 750ml ABV: 15% Varietal: Grenache Country/Region: France, Languedoc-Roussillon This 2014 vintage expresses a powerful, very complex nose, predominantly vanilla which evolves very quickly with aeration. The second nose reveals a dominant black fruit, with aromas of blackberry jam, blackcurrant and warm blueberry tart. Producer Information Le Clos des Fées is a wine estate in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France. It was founded by Hervé Bizeul in 1997 and specializes in the classic wines of this region, namely Côtes du Roussillon, Côtes du Roussillon Villages and Côtes Catalanes. Bizeul, then a sommelier and wine journalist, established the estate with just a few plots of vines and a converted garage for a winery. The first vintage was produced using extremely basic winemaking equipment, including four small tiny resin tanks and cheese-cloths. Over the years Le Clos des Fées has evolved to comprise seven vineyard sites in Vingrau, Tautavel, Maury, Calce, Lesquerde, Opoul and Espira de l'Agly. These vineyards are planted on a diverse range of soil types that vary from limestone to clay to granite, some with pebbles reminiscent of those found in Châteaneuf-du-Pape. These soils, when combined with the wide range of vineyard exposures, provide the ideal growing conditions for Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache, Carignan, Cabernet Franc and even Tempranillo. The wines produced by Le Clos des Fées are equally as varied as the terroirs they are sourced from. The iconic Les Sorcières is a blend of 50 percent Syrah, 30 percent Grenache and 20 percent Carignan from vines aged between 40-80 years old. The estate's oldest vines are nearly 100 years old and are the source of the Le Clos des Fées Grenache Blanc Vieilles Vignes, and the Côtes du Roussillon Villages Vieilles Vignes.

Producer: Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vintage: 2018 Size: 1.5L ABV: 13% Varietal: Carignan, Syrah Country/Region: France, Burgundy Delicate and impressive depth on the nose. The finish is quite unique, rich and long lasting. Producer Information Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, founded in 2000, is a relatively new wine producer in Burgundy, although the Liger-Belair family have owned vineyards in Vosne-Romanée since 1815. The domaine makes a range of grand and premier cru wines from vineyards in Nuits-Saint-Georges and Vosne-Romanée, with the tiny monopole of La Romanée providing Comte Liger-Belair's flagship wine. Louis Liger-Belair, a former general in Napoleon's army, acquired a vineyard holdings during the state sell-off of estates confiscated under the French Revolution – including the impressive Château de Vosne-Romanée. The Liger-Belairs held a good portion of land in the southern Côte de Nuits in the 19th Century, owning La Romanée and La Tâche as well as large portions of Clos de Vougeot and Chambertin, and a handful of premier cru vineyards. Much of the land was sold off in 1933 under Burgundy's complicated Napoleonic inheritance laws. What was left was farmed out to local vignerons and the wares sold to negociants. In 2000, Comte Louis-Michel Liger-Belair took over management of the vineyards and began to grow holdings in Vosne-Romanée and Nuit-Saint-Georges again. Comte Liger-Belair now produces the only wine from La Romanée, the Grand Cru vineyard on the hill above Romanée-Conti. The domaine also holds land in several Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru vineyards, including Aux Raignots and Les Chaumes, as well as in the Echezeaux Grand Cru vineyard and in a couple of Premier Crus in Nuits-Saint-Georges. Comte Liger-Belair's mostly Pinot Noir-based wines are made using biodynamic principles, and vineyards are plowed by horse. Short maceration times are favoured to avoid over-extraction, and the domaine uses mostly new oak. Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair's elegantly structured wines are highly sought-after, despite the domaine's youth. The La Romanée monopole wine is regularly among the most expensive wines produced in Burgundy.

Producer: Domaine Gauby Vintage: 2020 Size: 750ml ABV: 13% Varietal: Southern Rhone Red Blend Country/Region: France, IGP Cotes Catalanes This wine shows terrific balance and harmony. Quite delicate and smooth texture on the long finish. Producer Information Domaine Gauby is a wine estate in the Roussillon region of southern France. It is situated 20 km (12 miles) northwest of Perpignan, just outside the village of Calce. The domaine came to prominence under Gérard Gauby, who took over in 1985, and began to bottle his own wines which were previously sold off in bulk to the local cooperative. The estate is often credited with singlehandedly putting the Roussillon region on the radar of wine enthusiasts around the world. The estate grows Grenache, Syrah, Carignan and Mourvèdre for red wines made under the Côtes du Roussillon Villages AOC/AOP. Muntada, the flagship cuvée, is made from the best plots on the estate. Grenache Gris, Grenache Blanc, Macabeu and others are cultivated for the white wines, which are classified as IGP Côtes Catalanes. The property extends to around 85 hectares (210 acres), just over half of which are planted with vines. Many of the vines are exceptionally old – some with as much as 120 years of age. The soils are predominantly chalky, which is reflected in the name of the local village, Calce (from the same root as "calcareous"). In the winery, Gauby uses natural yeasts and there is no chaptalization, acidification, fining or filtration. Cement and wooden vats are used for fermentations and red wines age in old wooden casks. Gérard Gauby is also a partner in the Le Soula vineyard in the Agly valley, whose wines attract a similar level of acclaim.

Full-bodied and rich, the finish is silky and ridiculously long and must be tasted to be believed. There's no heat-derived trace of the wine's 16.2% alcohol; this foudre-aged wine just tastes ripe, round and delicious. Wow! Jeb Dunnuck: One of the finest wines to come from the Roussillon is unquestionably the 2016 Côtes du Roussillon Villages Les Trois Marie which is 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah brought up in foudre and barrels (20% being new). It’s a ripe, sexy, full-bodied effort that boasts awesome notes of black raspberries, blackberries, graphite, and pepper herbs, with some floral notes developing with time in the glass. Possessing fabulous concentration, a seamless texture, no hard edges, and a great finish, it’s a legendary Grenache from the Roussillon in the making. In 1988, Michel Chapoutier took the company reins, and a push toward quality saw the Chapoutier label begin to gain international recognition.Michel Chapoutier eschewed the use of traditional, large format chestnut foudres for aging, instead moving toward smaller oak casks with shorter aging periods. Producer: Famille Bréchet Vintage: 2014 Size: 750ml ABV: 14% Varietal: Grenache Blanc Country/Region: France, Rhone The palate is an explosion of delicate flavors, nice and delightful mouthfeel. Quite delicate and smooth texture on the long finish. Producer Information Famille Bréchet is a family-run wine producer based in the southern Rhône, particularly known for its Grenache-based reds from Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas. The company is centred around properties previously owned by Gabriel Meffre which, on his death in 1987, were inherited by his daughter Sylvette Bréchet – the Gabriel Meffre company itself was bought by Allied Domecq in 1990. Château Vaudieu, located in the centre of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, is the flagship property. In the 19th Century, it was one of the grandest estates of the region, but suffered greatly in the phylloxera disaster that ravaged European vineyards in the late 19th and early 20th Century. It was rescued by Gabriel Meffre and redeveloped to boast an unparalleled 70 hectares (173 acres) of vineyards in one site. Bréchet makes three red and two white Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines at Château Vaudieu. In the Rhône, Famille Bréchet also owns Domaine des Bosquets – another prestigious, award-winning property located in Gigondas with 26 hectares (65 acres) of vineyard. It also holds Domaine de la Jérôme in Séguret, and Le Plateau des Chênes in Lirac. In the western part of the Côtes de Provence, Bréchet runs Château de la Coulerette, which has a 60-hectare (148-acre) vineyard, a part of which falls in the La Londe sub-appellation.

Balanced, rich and powerful style, layers of dark fruit, bitter chocolate, fine spices and a very long promising aftertaste. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The Thunevin and Calvet 2010 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Les Trois Marie represents, exceptionally, unassisted Grenache (from Maury), raised in a single foudre. There is an infectious juiciness to its confitured strawberry and black raspberry fruit, with accents of licorice, wormwood, vanilla and dark chocolate lending striking and seductive counterpoint on a polished palate and profound, metaphorically dark yet vibrant finish. These grapes with this vinification have resulted in a polish, clarity and energy that the other wines from this estate in 2010 don’t achieve. (Of course, there is the difficulty engendered by localized hail in Lesquerde that influences certain other cuvees. But I suspect that the use of large cask is also significant.) The vines of Domaine Calvet-Thunevin consists mainly of Grenache, Syrah and Carignan, Mourvèdre plus and a few other varieties. The work of the vine wants ecological, without chemical weeding and with treatments that least affected the environment. The harvest of the Domaine Calvet-Thunevin are made by hand with sorting in the vineyard and cellar. The wines are made, depending on the vintage, or tank-cement or in barrels. In 2008, Calvet-Thunevin Domaine is also equipped with a new winery, via the most modern solutions in ecology and offering an efficient tool for...

Domaine des Tours is perhaps best known in relation to these top estates and produces similarly crafted red and white wines from Vacqueyras, Côtes-du-Rhône, and Vaucluse. The domaine's best fruit is used for Château des Tours Vacqueyras, a blend of around 95 percent Grenache with 5 percent Syrah. The 40-hectare (100-acre) estate is farmed organically and centered on the production of old-vine Grenache. Other varieties planted include Cinsaut, Syrah, Merlot, Counoise, Grenache Blanc and Clairette with vines averaging 25 years old. Soils are composed of clay with slopes containing marne rock and a sandy topsoil. Grapes are harvested later than most producers in the region and yields are kept low. Red wines are vinified and aged for up to two years in a mixture of stainless steel tanks and cement vats – some old oak casks are used for three to six months of aging.

Energetic and precise on the palate, offering raspberry, red currant, pomelo, nectarine and crushed rocks notes. Producer Information La Bernarde is an historic property in the Côtes de Provence appellation. The winery and their vineyards sit on a rocky limestone hillside at about 300 meters above sea level, making it one of the highest properties in the entire region. The cooler micro-climate of this area – it snows most winters! – allows them to make the kind of rosé we dream of, yet so rarely find; crisp, mineral-laced, bright-fruited, and with the complexity to drink on its own or with a variety of light or grilled fare. It also provides the conditions to make a red and white with a balance and texture not commonly found in the area. This oasis of limestone and cool temperatures that La Bernarde finds itself in is an incredible asset, as it sets them apart from many of the domaines that sit in the hot, low-lying flatlands near St. Tropez. On top of that, 100% of the vineyards and grapes are owned and farmed by the La Bernarde team – a rarity in the world of modern Provence winemaking. All of this comes together into a lineup of organically farmed beauties that are honest and delicious expressions of this gorgeous terroir.

Producer Information Domaine de la Janasse is a Châteauneuf-du-Pape producer owned and operated by the Sabon family. It was founded in 1967 by Aimé Sabon when he took over the vineyards of his father, who had been selling fruit to a wine cooperative. A cellar was completed in 1973 and the name "La Janasse" was chosen from a local regional name in Courthézon to the north of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where the family farm was located. In 1991 Aimé's son Christophe joined the estate, followed by his daughter Isabelle in 2001. Domaine de la Janasse began with 15 hectares (37 acres) of estate vineyards and now has more than 90 hectares (220 acres), with 15 hectares (37 acres) in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The winery makes a number of wines including red and white Côtes du Rhone, and a number of IGP wines, but the flagship wines have always been the Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds. The winery makes three distinct expressions: Domaine de la Janasse Tradition, Chaupin and Vieilles Vignes. It also makes a white version of Tradition and a second white wine called Prestige. Janasse grows all 13 permissible grapes in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, from the standard Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah to lesser known components like Counoise, Vaccarèse, and Bourboulenc. Many of the white Châteauneuf-du-Pape varieties, along with Syrah, are planted in the slightly cooler vineyards to the north in east-exposed vineyards. Mourvèdre is planted in sites where galets (large river stones) abound. These alluvial stones retain heat and allow the grapes to reach greater physiological ripeness. The most significant variety in the region is Grenache, which is planted throughout the domaine vineyards. However, Janasse separates fruit from northern vineyards for use in varietal wines, and fruit in southern vineyards for blends where it can be balanced by other grapes.

Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Clairette. Producer Information Château de Saint Cosme is a wine producer located just north of the village of Gigondas in the southern Rhône. The estate has been growing wine since the 15th Century, and its Grenache-based wines made under the Gigondas appellation are considered some of the region's best. The estate consists of three low-yielding vineyards totalling 15 hectares (37 acres) around Gigondas. Each of these – Le Poste, Le Claux and Hominus Fides – has a corresponding single-vineyard wine which forms the top tier of Château de Saint Cosme. These top wines are aged in a combination of first-, second- and third-fill barriques. In addition to this, there are two other wines made from these vineyards: a generic Gigondas wine, and Valbelle, which is made from older vines. The Le Poste vineyard also provides a Côtes du Rhône Blanc made from Clairette, which is fermented and aged in old oak barrels.

Tense and peppery, this finds equilibrium on the long finish. Reviews: James Suckling: A much more deeply pitched nose is comprised by notes of violet, plum, black cherry and discreet floral hints. There is excellent volume to the suave and very rounded medium weight flavors that also exude a fine bead of minerality onto the dusty, persistent and mildly austere finish. This velvety effort should drink reasonably well after only 5 years and reward up to a decade of cellar time. Producer Information Domaine Clos de la Chapelle is a wine estate in the Volnay appellation of Burgundy. The domaine is made up exclusively of a small number of grand cru and premier cru vineyards in the Côte de Beaune. The Clos de la Chapelle Monopole not only provides the namesake wine for the domaine group but is also one of the flagship vineyards producing Premier Cru Volnay reds from Pinot Noir grapes. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2014 Vougeot 1er Cru le Clos Blanc has a clean and detailed, granite and smoke-scented bouquet that is austere at first, but finds its voice with aeration. The palate is rounded and harmonious on the entry with touches of tinned peach and nectarine, a keen line of acidity and nicely integrated oak just filling out the finish. Give it a year or two once in bottle - it will be a very fine Vougeot. Burghound: A measured dollop of wood does not impede the appreciation of the floral and earth-inflected white orchard fruit-scented nose. There is better volume and mid-palate density to the attractively punchy and powerful middle weight flavors that display a mild touch of rusticity on the impressively complex and persistent finale. This pretty and softly stony effort should benefit from 4 to 7 years of cellaring. Producer Information Domaine de la Vougeraie is an estate created through the amalgamation of several vineyard holdings acquired by the Boisset family in Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Picks up a smoky nuance with air and finishes impressively long and seamless, with resonating stoniness and excellent clarity.
