Sage and bay leaf notes show in the background, revealing the vintage's rusticity, but there's enough raw material here to wait it out with some cellaring. Reviews: Wine Enthusiast: This elegant red is a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec. Freshly turned earth, cedar and dried herbs accent a sizable midpalate of cassis and toasted oak. The tannins are supple and supportive. James Suckling: Lots of blueberry and blackberry aromas and flavors. Tar, too. Full body. Round, polished tannins and a solid, chewy finish. A cabernet sauvignon-based Bordeaux blend that shows integrity for the vintage. Better after 2021. Producer: The Gainey Vineyard Vintage: 2017 Size: 750ml ABV: 13.9% Varietal: Merlot Country/Region: United States, Santa Ynez Valley The 2017 Estate Grown Merlot is a sumptuous red wine boasting fragrant black cherry and dark plum aromas mingled with appealing vanilla, milk chocolate and light herbal scents. Juicy and succulent on the palate, the wine’s concentrated dark cherry, plum and cassis flavors gain a zesty tea-leaf spice tone in the long, savory finish. Producer Information In 1962, Daniel C. and son Daniel J. Gainey purchased an 1,800 acre ranch on the eastern end of the Santa Ynez Valley. The Gainey Ranch, a combination of cattle, farming, and Arabian horse breeding, became the largest diversified ranching operation in the valley. Dan J. Gainey retired in 1984 to devote himself to fulfilling his dream of making wine. In 1983, he planted 51 acres of vineyards on the northern boundary of the Gainey Ranch and in November of 1984 the 12,000 square foot Spanish-style winery opened its doors to visitors. Soon after, Dan H. Gainey joined his father and together the father-son team have set out to produce premium, hand-crafted wines made from the best vineyards in Santa Barbara County. With over 40 years of farming experience behind them, the Gaineys have a connection to the land that few vintners may share. Since the original vineyard planting in 1983, the Gaineys have added 32 acres to their "Home" Ranch, which is primarily planted to the Bordeaux varietals Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. In 1996, they purchased 120 acres on the western end of the Santa Ynez Valley, a cooler growing region more suitable for Burgundian varietals. In 1997, they planted 35 acres at this "Santa Rosa Hills" Ranch to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah, with plans for further plantings in the years ahead.

The Debate began in 2010 when two friends brought their unique perspectives together to create thought provoking and delicious wines that extend beyond the sense of taste to the thrill of telling stories and the art of listening. By selecting three different vineyards with three different expressions of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the Debate seeks to point out the diversity of terroir as well as the diversity of people. We live in an age where less and less time is spent at the dinner table discussing these different points of view. The Debate mission is to bring people together to share a glass of wine to discuss and debate just as our team does.

The Duckhorns came to appreciate Merlot for its approachability, smooth texture, and youthful drinkability, and today it forms the basis of the winery's flagship wines. In 2015, Duckhorn acquired the Three Palms vineyard – a site considered to be one of the best for Merlot in California. Duckhorn had purchased fruit from this vineyard since 1978 and, between 2011 and 2015, had been granted exclusive access to its fruit. Altogether, Duckhorn makes wines from more than 400 hectares (1000 acres) of estate vineyards, as well as bringing in fruit from independent growers. This includes sites in Howell Mountain, Yountville, Anderson Valley and the Russian River Valley. The collection is made up of several ranges including Paraduxx, Decoy, Goldeneye and Migration. Most recently Duckhorn has expanded into Washington with their Canvasback range. The inaugural vintage for this label was a 2012 Red Mountain AVA Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2016 Duckhorn Vineyards, along with its five additional wine brands, was sold to San Francisco-based private equity firm, TSG Consumer Partners.

This wine exhibits a beautiful range of ripe fruit, oak, and spicy aromas and flavors. The wine offers dense black currant, cherry and plum with a lasting seasoning of nutmeg. Producer Information Dry Creek Vineyard is a leading producer in Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma County, California. It has gained particular renown for its selection of wines from the Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel grape varieties. Dry Creek Vineyard was founded in 1972 by David Stare, with the purchase and replanting of a prune orchard opposite the Dry Creek General Store. Stare was at the forefront of the formation of the Dry Creek Valley AVA in 1983, and was the first to plant Sauvignon Blanc in Dry Creek Valley – and the first in Sonoma County to release a Fumé Blanc. There are five wines in the current portfolio made from Sauvignon Blanc, including Soleil ("sun" in French), a late-harvest, botritized dessert wine crafted in the style of a Sauternes. Dry Creek is also considered a leading specialist of Zinfandel, and there are a range of wines made from this variety, including the core Old Vines and Heritage Vines cuvées, and a range of single-vineyard wines. There is also a well-regarded, Loire-style Chenin Blanc from the Clarksburg AVA, and the DCV Estate Block 10 Chardonnay, of which around 1250 cases are made annually. Despite making a name for its Zinfandel, Dry Creek Vineyard was reportedly the first estate to use the term Meritage on the label of a 1985 vintage red wine, released in 1987. The current group of Bordeaux-style reds is headed by The Mariner, a blend based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot along with Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc, sourced from the best hillside sites in the Dry Creek Valley. There are 185 acres (75 hectares) of estate vineyards, which provide around 65 percent of the overall production. The remainder comes from other Dry Creek Valley vineyards...

A loamy note mingles with the fruit through the broad finish, while light herb and singed alder hints check in. Producer Information Robert Mondavi Winery is one of the most prominent wine producers in Napa Valley. Founded in 1966 by Robert Mondavi himself, the company is widely credited with kickstarting the modern era of California's wine industry. Robert Mondavi Winery makes a range of wines, from the value-driven Woodbridge and Private Selection labels to collectable, age-worthy wines from Napa Valley's famed To Kalon vineyard. Mondavi founded the winery after a less-than-amicable split from his family's business, Charles Krug. His stated aim was to swap quantity for quality, believing that good wine could be made in the valley. To Kalon, originally planted in 1868, became the epicentre of his estate, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc (often labeled Fumé Blanc in California) providing the backbone of the Mondavi range. Over the years, Mondavi has employed some of Napa's most famous winemakers, including Mike Grgich (of Chateau Montelena), Warren Winiarski (of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars) and Zelma Long (of Simi Winery). Today the winery makes wines from a host of grape varieties, including Merlot, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir and Moscato. The range spans vineyards throughout Napa, including sites in Carneros and Stags Leap. Mondavi's Private Selection wines fall under the sizeable Central Coast appellation, and Woodbridge wines are labelled under the generic California appellation, although many of the vineyards are located in Lodi. One of Mondavi's most high-profile contributions to Californian winemaking came via a collaboration with Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild. Opus One, the resulting wine, first appeared in 1980, and has gone on to become one of California's more iconic Cabernet Sauvignon wines, netting both high praise and high prices. Although Opus One is now a separate entity to Robert Mondavi Winery, it still bears...

It is planted to four different clones: two Old Wente clones, Mount Eden and Corton Charlemagne. Producer: Dierberg Estate Vineyard Vintage: 2017 Size: 750ml ABV: 13.1% Varietal: Pinot Noir Country/Region: United States, Santa Maria Valley The nose demonstrates notes of Malaga strawberry and barely-ripe raspberry, with a touch of dried herbs, while on the palate the vibrant acidity balances the juiciness of the red fruit. The finish is clean, and pure, with just a hint of sandy minerality. Producer Information In 1996, with forty years of winemaking experience, Jim and Mary Dierberg’s dream of producing wines worthy of their 250 year plan became a reality. After a long search through France and Napa, while learning the craft and making wine in the mid-west, they discovered the potential of Santa Barbara’s cool coastal valleys. The family planted two estates -first their namesake Dierberg Vineyard and later Drum Canyon Vineyard – both under their DIERBERG label. These estates, along with the family’s iconic warm climate site Star Lane Vineyard, culminated in a trio of peerless properties in Santa Barbara County. Jim and Mary are no newcomers to wine. Since 1974, they’ve owned the Hermannhof Winery in Hermann, Missouri, which was one of the United States’ most significant wine-growing regions prior to Prohibition. Located about an hour’s drive west of St. Louis, Hermannhof is one of America’s oldest wineries. The Dierbergs have dedicated the past 40 years to renovating the property and raising its reputation as a place for education and entertainment. While the town’s history and charm brought the Dierbergs to Hermann, the region’s Midwestern climate cannot support the traditional European varietals that Jim and Mary have become fans of over the years. In the 1980s, the Dierbergs began looking outside of Missouri for a place to plant that passion. After realizing that properties in Bordeaux and Napa Valley weren’t suitable for their desires, they chanced upon the Santa Barbara area in 1996. Today, the entire operation is one big family affair, with the Dierbergs’ grown children and their spouses intimately involved in the day-to-day operations of the vineyard and winery.

They produce Old world style, balanced wines that are bright and structured with low/moderate alcohol and distinct site characteristics. Owners Matt, Alexis and Troy Iaconis also specialize in a highly-acclaimed rosé as well as two unique blends of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, both picked the same day from the same two vineyards, comprised of the exact same blend percentage between Pinot Noir and Chardonnay – one as a white wine (Vin Clair) and one as a red wine (Vin Rubis). brick & mortar’s first single vineyard sparkling wine is set to be released in 2019. The name brick & mortar was founded on the fact the 2011 Pinot Noir would be the foundational wine of the winery. Given that Matt had spent the summer of 2011 in Burgundy, he fell in love with Pinot Noir and the cobblestone towns. When exploring names for the winery, he mentioned that when one goes through difficult times, a strong foundation is needed – and considering the foundation of some of the world’s longest standing buildings is made from many different variations of brick & mortar, the name was a perfect fit.

The Ranch 2017 is just perfect in proportion, precision and weight. Polished and strong, this wine can be enjoyed immediately and over the next 10 years. Reviews: Wine Spectator: This is nicely packed, showing polished cassis and plum reduction notes layered with smoldering tobacco accents and a hint of alder. A touch toothy through the finish as the toast hangs on, but the fruit core is plenty solid, and that should win out with some cellaring. Best from 2021 through 2030. Our property is in the heartland of vineyards of distinction and character; it touches both the Rutherford and St. Helena appellations, and the Howell Mountain appellation is a few hundred yards away. The estate was established in 1988 by James Hall, Anne Moses, and Donald and Heather Patz. Collectively, they established contracts with growers around northern California to create a full portfolio of site specific wines. In the vineyard, grapes are hand-picked to preserve phenolics and prevent excess oxidation. Fermentation takes place in both stainless steel and French oak barrels. Patz & Hall has a unique stave wood program where it dries, seasons, and ages its own Burgundian oak staves for three years before the barrels are coopered, around 18 months longer than normal. The percentage of new oak the winery uses on each wine varies between 50 and 70 percent. In 2016, Patz & Hall was purchased by Chateau Ste. Michelle of which in turn was purchased by Sycamore Partners Managment in 2021. A total of around 20,000 cases of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are produced annually.

Quite delicate and smooth texture on the long finish. Producer Information Day is the new Zinfandel project of Ehren Jordan, the mastermind behind such amazing labels as Turley, Neyers, and Failla. When he purchased a St. Helena property back in 2004, he knew he wanted to plant grapes on the hillside that at the time contained an apple orchard. After a few years of pondering, he decided that the locale was ideal for one of his early loves in the vine world - Zinfandel. Four acres are currently planted, with the original vines hitting the dirt in 2011. Zinfandel is, for Ehren, a return to his roots, having been the wines that established his reputation as a talented vigneron. Similar to the approach at Failla, most of the Day Zinfandel wines are sourced from Sonoma County; an area largely unexplored during Ehren's tenure at Turley. Great sites, old vines, and gentle winemaking remain the production philosophy for Day. Ehren is more than thrilled to work with some of California's finest Zinfandel vineyards; we hope you are as pleased with the wines as we are.
