Producer: Pian dell'Orino Vintage: 2017 Size: 750ml ABV: 14% Varietal: Sangiovese Country/Region: Italy, Tuscany Bright red. Sweet spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla) complement dark red and black cherry aromas on the fresh, sexy nose. Enters lively, juicy, and sweet but with a tactile mouthfeel and savory flavors of red cherry, herbs and sassafras. Nicely persistent on the youthfully chewy finish that highlights noteworthy but polished oaky nuances. Producer Information Pian dell'Orino is a leading Montalcino wine estate. Well-known for its reds from the Sangiovese grape, the estate has 22 different clones planted to the variety. The 6 hectare (15 acre) estate covers four different vineyards in Montalcino, located next to the famous vineyards of Biondi Santi. The chalk-rich soils have proved very well suited to the Sangiovese grapes that are grown here. Proprietors Caroline Pobitzer and Jan Hendrick Erbach have farmed the estate organically and biodynamically for many years. Pian dell'Orino's top wine, the Bassolino di Sopra, is sourced from the upper part of the Bassolino vineyard. This inaugural vintage was 2007, and since has only been produced in the best years. In 2006 and 2004, a Riserva without a vineyard designation was made instead. The standard Brunello di Montalcino wine – called Vigneti del Versante from 2010 – is sourced from the Bassolino and Cancello Rosso vineyards. It is aged for around 45 months in large oak vats. The lineup also includes a Rosso di Montalcino that spends a year in oak barriques, and the Piandorino, a varietal Sangiovese made under the Toscana IGT designation. This wine is made with fruit from the more fertile parts of the vineyards, and is regarded by the estate as a more obviously fruity wine than the classic Montalcino style. Pian dell'Orino gained considerable attention in 2016 when the Bassolino di Sopra wine received a 100-point rating from Robert Parker's publication The Wine Advocate.

It’s medium-bodied with chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Producer Information Pian delle Vigne is an Italian wine estate situated 4 miles (6 km) south of Montalcino in Tuscany. The estate's Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva are the flagship wines of the portfolio. Pian delle Vigne was acquired by Marchesi Antinori in 1995 and spans 184 hectares (470 acres), 65 ha (161 acres) of which are planted to Sangiovese. The vineyards are planted on predominantly southeast facing slopes of clayey and calcareous soils rich in stones at altitudes between 430 to 825 feet (130 to 250 meters) above sea level. The "older" half of these vineyards was planted to vine between 1996 and 1997. The temperate climate found in Montalcino allows the Sangiovese grapes to be harvested around two weeks earlier than those in the Chianti Classico region, typically in mid-September. A Sangiovese-based Rosso di Montalcino DOC is also included in the wine portfolio from Pian delle Vigne.

Brunello Pian delle Vigne is an extraordinary expression with great finesse. Reviews: Wine Enthusiast: This opens with balsamic aromas of camphor and crushed mint that mingle with ripe black-skinned fruit and coconut. Full-bodied and already rather accessible, the smooth, concentrated palate offers dried cherry, licorice and espresso alongside enveloping, fine-grained tannins. Wine Spectator: This red delivers a nice contrast between fruity and savory elements, offering cherry and plum flavors matched by loam, sage and soy notes that are backed by solid, chalky tannins. Compact on the finish for now. Producer Information The Antinori family of Florence, one of the world's oldest and most distinguished wine producers, has lived in Tuscany since the 14th century and celebrated its 625th anniversary as wine makers in 2010. The current company president, Marchese Piero Antinori, believes in the tradition that the primary role of wine is to accompany food and enhance the dining experience. In Florence, the Antinori family has led a "Renaissance" in Italian wine making by combining long traditions, a love of authenticity and a dynamic innovative spirit.

It had its origins in their father's business, Banfi Vintners, which was founded in 1919 and was America's leading Italian wine importer at the time. Today, Castello Banfi has vineyards throughout the northwest coast of Italy, from Piedmont, to Chianti Classico, Bolgheri and Montalcino. The estate encompasses 2870 hectares (7100 acres) of land, with about a third under vine. Banfi produces wines from international grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc, as well as indigenous Italian grapes such as Sangiovese, Vermentino and Dolcetto. The majority of these wines see some time aging in oak – anywhere from a few months to 30 months for the estate's Brunello de Montalcino. The portfolio of Castello Banfi is broad, covering slighty effervescent Cortese de Gavi from Piedmont, to muscular and bold Super Tuscans made from Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blends in Montalcino.

This wine shines with aromas and flavors of red fruits and earthy notes that stay long on the palate. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The Poggio di Sotto 2017 Rosso di Montalcino is a terrific wine and one of a handful of Rossi that I can recommend for longer cellar aging. This Rosso is built like a Brunello and shows the qualities needed to further its evolution. In this 20,000-bottle release, those attributes include complexity, freshness and a solid, mid-weight structure. You hardly feel the heat of the vintage, save for those hints of extra richness and concentration that add to the wine's important and pleasurable mouthfeel. This is a terrific Rosso with the long-term perspective of its big brother Brunello. James Suckling: All about finesse here with clean red and black-fruit aromas and flavors. Medium body, fine and lightly firm tannins and a medium finish. Nicely done. Producer Information Poggio di Sotto is a wine producer based in the Tuscan region of Montalcino, famous for its Brunello di Montalcino wines. It was founded in 1989, and its 16 hectares (40 acres) of steep, hillside vineyards are planted entirely to Sangiovese. The vineyards range between 200-400m (650-1300ft) above sea level on the Montalcino hillsides. The rocky soils here are characterized by gravel and clay in the lower parcels and sandy clay in the upper levels – an excellent terroir for Sangiovese – "Brunello" as it is known in the region. Poggio di Sotto produces three Sangiovese-based wines: a Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva, a Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and a Rosso di Montalcino DOC. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts and is followed by a prolonged period of maceration. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged in Slavonian oak casks for up to five years (depending on the wine). The Rosso di Montalcino is bottle-aged for at least 6 months and the Brunello wines for approximately 8-12 months. The estate also produces a Grappa and an extra virgin olive oil. Since 2011, the Poggio di Sotto estate has been a part of the ColleMassari portfolio of wineries.

Quite delicate and smooth texture on the long finish. Producer Information Fulvio Marcucci in the 1960s was way ahead of the pack. He and his wife, Renata, purchased some 25 acres of woodland that formed a natural amphitheater on the southwest side of Montalcino, with an eye to planting vines and olive trees. Fast forward nearly 50 years and these vineyards are in their prime, and Fulvio’s granddaughter, Gemma, is crafting vibrant, energetic Brunello wines that are now starting to make waves in the wider wine world. Their three vineyards, ‘Vigna dei Meli,’ ‘Vigna del Picchio’ and ‘Vigna della Sorgente,’ were planted between 1968 and 2000. With just over seven acres of vines (surrounded by wild forest), the Marcucci family produces less than 6,000 bottles of their Brunello wine each vintage. This family farm is one of Montalcino’s smallest, located near Tavernelle in the appellation’s southwest, with just over seven acres of land planted (by family hands) to Sangiovese vines. The rest of the farm is dedicated to olive trees and wild forest. The estate’s first vineyard, Vigna dei Meli, was planted in 1974. Following this, the family expanded its holdings to Vigna del Picchio, planted in 1986, then Vigna della Sorgente, in 2000. Soils are a mix of sand, limestone and clay. All vineyards sit at around 1,050 feet in altitude; as the area sits in a rain shadow, the climate is favorable, with dry summers and autumns, ideal for Sangiovese’s ripening phase. Vines are cared for sustainably, using organic treatments whenever possible. Grapes are harvested by hand in small crates, and fermented on indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks, with controlled temperatures. Wines are aged either in tank or in traditional, older Slavonian oak “botti.”

Fruit for this wine comes from the youngest vines that are planted in thick clay soils. This wine is fine and beautifully delicate on the finish.

By the time it was completed in 1596, it is believed the estate had started to produce wine (records show olive oil was being produced at this time). The land and villa changed ownership between various aristocratic families but only flourished as a winery in the 19th Century after it came into the possession of Lady Ersilia Caetani Lovatelli. In 1967, Argiano was a founding member of the Brunello Consortium set up to advance and promote the wine region. In 2013, the estate was sold to a Brazilian business group, which began to make improvements to the winery and increased land holdings from 50 to 60 hectares (124 to 150 acres). Argiano makes several wines: the flagship Brunello di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, Vigna del Suolo (a single-vineyard Brunello); a Rosso di Montalcino; and two IGT wines called Solengo and Non Confunditur. Suolo, like the Brunello, is 100 percent Sangiovese, but the Solengo and Non Confunditur wines are both Bordeaux blends with a little Syrah, and in the case of the Non Confunditur, Sangiovese. Total production is around 337,000 bottles of which roughly 100,000 are Brunello di Montalcino. Argiano was one of the producers accused of using non-permissible grapes in their blends as part of the "Brunellogate" scandal in 2009....

Round and foursquare, but still quite juicy, it delivers lots of soft fruit across a more serious backbone of tannins. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Similar to the Brunello Amore e Magia, the more accessible Podere le Ripi 2016 Rosso di Montalcino Sogni e Follia shows a beautiful dark ruby color with purple highlights. The bouquet is also very direct and raw, and even a touch carbonic in character. This adds to the wine's overall intensity and brightness. Red cherry, raspberry and bitter almond rise with strength and determination. Fruit for this wine comes from a six-hectare property on the west side of Montalcino, in the Camigliano or Pian delle Vigne area, with sandy limestone soils and some alluvial elements. This Rosso is aged in large oak casks and then goes into cement for a few months for final integration. Some 25,000 bottles were made. Wine Spectator: This is an enticing wine with dark cherries, orange peel, lemons, rosemary and thyme, as well as walnut undertones. Round and foursquare, but still quite juicy, it delivers lots of soft fruit across a more serious backbone of tannins. Producer Information Podere Le Ripi is a Montalcino-based wine estate, producing a collection of biodynamic wines from Sangiovese, Syrah, Trebbiano and Malvasia. The estate was founded by Francesco Illy in 1997.The estate cultivates 34 hectares (84 acres) of vineyards across two locations in Montalcino. 30 hectares (74 acres) are planted to Sangiovese with small portions of Syrah, Trebbiano and Malvasia. Here, a mediterranean climate with continental influence creates a dry and cool climate for viticulture. The proximity to the Monte Amiata volcano provides a mineral soil type with a concentration of both macro and micro elements. In the vineyard, grapes are harvested by hand into baskets according to the biodynamic calendar. After arriving at the winery, grapes are hand sorted prior to a slow fermentation in barrel or open-top tonneaux.

Its silky textures soothe all that they touch, as ripe red and black fruits settle upon the senses. Producer Information Fattoria La Fiorita is a wine estate in Montalcino, Tuscany specializing in red wines from the Sangiovese grape variety. Founded in the early 1990s, it has been fully owned since 2014 by American former actress Natalie Oliveros, a part-owner since 2011. On taking over Ms Oliveros instigated a shift to organic viticulture, with certification achieved in 2019. A new vineyard, Giardinello, was planted in 2014, and a new winery and cellar was completed in time for the 2019 harvest. The winery itself lies a short distance to the north of Castelnuovo dell'Abate in the southeast corner of Montalcino. There are just 0.4 hectares (1 acre) of vines on this property, planted around the same time as Giardinello. There are three principal vineyards in different parts of the growing zone, offering varied terroirs. The production facility is gravity-fed, for gentle movement of must, juice and wine. Ferments take place in 16 concrete tanks designated for particular vineyard parcels. Wines are aged in 5000-liter French and Slavonian oak botti before selection and blending by the owner.

The bouquet is rich and complex with aromas of violets, red berries, such as raspberry and red currant, and a fresh hint of red orange. On the palate it is dry, fresh, full- bodied with smooth tannins. Very long and tasty finish, with a pleasant minerality and flavors of violets and berries. Producer Information Nello Baricci, the founder of the estate, was born in Montalcino in 1921. In 1955, with the few savings of a lifetime, he bought the Eastern slope of the Montosoli hill, a very special place with a long tradition of Sangiovese cultivation dating back to the Middle- Age. The Montosoli hill was already famous for the production of high-quality wines thanks to its exceptional combination of soil composition and micro-climate. When the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino was established in 1967, Nello Baricci was already considered a Master of Sangiovese. He put the first signature and received the badge #1. Moreover he registered the 1st hectare of Brunello at the Chamber of Commerce in Siena, a real pioneer in the history of Montalcino. The first bottle of Rosso di Montalcino was produced in 1968 and the first Brunello in 1971. Today Baricci is the only producer to have all his vineyards (5 Ha) in the Montosoli “Grand Cru”, plus the cellar. The estate is now managed by Nello’s grandsons, Federico and Francesco. In Montosoli the Pliocene marine-soil gives the Sangiovese vines great richness in mineral substances, plus its rocky structure (quartz, marnes, scist, fossils) guarantees a good drainage in the rainy seasons, which is a fundamental prerogative for a high-quality grape ripeness. The micro-climate is the other great component making this area so exceptional. The Montosoli Cru is located in the Northern area of Montalcino. The higher altitude works as a barrier from the heating and the warm winds coming from South. Moreover, the adjacent cooler and humid Valdarbia area to the North, contributes to lower the avarage temperature and to increase the humidity. This cooler climate makes the ripening process slower than in other areas of Montalcino. Here, usually the harvest is delayed of 15 days than in the warmer Southern sites. These...

The expansive San Filippo Estate has been owned by the Fanti family since the 18th Century and has been run by Filippo Fanti since the early 1970s. Here Tenuta Fanti produces Brunello di Montalcino and Toscana IGT wines from a host of local and international varieties including Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Viogner, Malvasia, Vermentino, and Trebbiano. The estate spans 300 hectares (741 acres) planted to some 50ha (124 acres) of vines, 80 percent of which are Sangiovese. The soils are primarily composed of galestro, or marl, and vines are planted to face south for maximum sun exposure. The estate produces a host of classic Tuscan wines including Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino, Super Tuscan blends, Vin Santo Sant'Antimo, and the distilled grape spirit, Grappa di Brunello. Tenuta Fanti's top designated wine is Vigna le Marcchiarelle, a Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva produced from the estate's oldest vineyard. The wine is produced with Sangiovese from vines that average 35 years old, planted to less than 3ha (7 acres) of the estate. The grapes are vinified in stainless steel tanks before aging in oak barrels, a portion in French oak tonneaux and a part in cask, for a minimum of 24 months. The Costanti family has a long and storied history in the region. It was involved in the formation of the Republic of Siena in 1555, and became a key presence in the area. The Costantis rose to winemaking prominence in the 19th Century when Tito Costanti was one of the first to make wines using the name "Brunello". Today, the winery is presided over by Andrea Costanti, who took over the family-owned business in 1983. The Conti Costanti estate spans 25 hectares (62 acres) of land, with 12 hectares (30 acres) planted to vine. The majority of the vineyard is planted to Sangiovese, with vines varying in age from six to 25 years old. These vines have been further supplemented with a small three-hectare (seven-acre) plot planted to Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are typically harvested in early October and fermented on their skins in stainless steel vats for up to three weeks, depending on the vintage. The Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and Brunello di Montalcino Riserva wines are aged for 18 months in tonneaux, and then a further 18 months in Slavonian oak casks before spending a year in bottle before release. The Rosso sees just 12 months in younger Allier oak barriques. The Brunello Riserva is only made in the best years and can be cellared for many years.

The bright fruit flavours mingle with scents of violet and Mediterranean herbs. Elegant and distinguished, the palate reveals its impressive structure with a lively freshness and a centred, fruity core. Fine-grained tannins lead to a fragrant and deliciously savoury finish. Reviews: Wine Enthusiast: The nose is floral and sweet, but refreshing thanks to clean, balancing aromas of mint and dirt. The palate takes that freshness a step further, to a light, bouncy, almost astringent level. Precocious tannins are young yet dense and supportive, while jubilant acid sings. Producer Information Biondi Santi is a Tuscan producer synonymous with the wines of Brunello di Montalcino; indeed, it has claims to being the inventor of the appellation. The Biondi Santi vineyard has 32 hectares (79 acres) of Sangiovese, of which five hectares (12 acres) were planted between 1930-1972. The vineyards are divided on five vineyard plots, located around the town of Montalcino. The main estate, Tenuta Greppo, where the cellar and the main vineyards are located, lies at an altitude of 564 meters (1,850 feet) above sea level The oldest vines form the basis of the Riserva wines, while the standard wine is made from vines in the 10-25 year bracket. Fruit from vines less than 10 years old supplies the dry, brightly aromatic Rosso di Montalcino. In poorer years, when no Brunello is released, Biondi Santi used to make a second Rosso di Montalcino, called Fascia Rossa, with fruit from the older vines. This is now discontinued. The grapes are picked relatively early for the region, and then undergo a long maceration. Most of the grapes are fermented in resin-lined cement using native yeasts. Those destined for the Riserva are vinified in wooden vats. The Brunello wines are then aged for 36 months in large, neutral Slavonian oak casks, while the Rosso wines see 12 months. Biondi Santi does not use new oak, as it is...

Vinous: An intense burst of crushed raspberries, sage, cloves and dusty dried roses wafts up from the 2021 Rosso di Montalcino. It displays a beautiful elegance on the palate, nearly velvety in feel yet energetic, with a seductive mix of rich red fruits and sweet inner florals. This finishes lightly structured with rounded tannins adding youthful poise without slowing the 2019s momentum. There’s so much concentration and power here, and it has the acidity to balance, clocking in at 5.68 grams per liter of total acidity. Producer Information Azienda Agricola Canalicchio di Sopra is a Tuscan family-owned wine estate on the slopes of Montalcino best known for its Brunello wines. It was founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti, formerly a peasant farmer under the terms of the mezzadria, the Tuscan sharecropping system whereby a property was worked in return for half the crop. The establishment of many older Brunello estates in the 1960s and 70s stem from the phasing out of this institution. The estate is located in the hamlet from which it takes its name, on the northern side of the municipality of Montalcino. There are around 15 hectares (37 acres) of vines, split between two prestigious sites, one at Canalicchio di Sopra itself, and the other at Le Gode de Montosoli. These vineyards produce wines of differing levels of elegance and power that are blended carefully before bottling. Canalicchio di Sopra's 2010 wines gained widespread...

Producer: Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Ratings: VN 92 JS 91 Vintage: 2020 Size: 750ml ABV: 14.5% Varietal: Sangiovese Country/Region: Italy, Tuscany Ruby red color. Notes of red berry fruits are enriched by slight floral and spicy hints. Warm, soft on the palate with great structure and round tannins. Reviews: Vinous: Darkly floral and broody yet captivating, the 2020 Rosso di Montalcino Rossofonte entices with depths of dried black cherry, cedary, exotic spice and a dusting of cocoa. This is pure elegance on the palate, with silken textures that usher in waves of ripe red and black fruit, all balanced by a core of mineral-tinged acidity. The 2020 finishes with a bitter tinge of sour wild berries and licorice, tapering off with medium length and only lightly structured. This is a more immediate style for Rossofonte, yet one that I find quite attractive. James Suckling: Sweet cherry and floral character with some orange-peel undertones. Light-to medium-bodied with firm tannins and a persistent, focused finish. Producer Information Ciacci Piccolomini is one of the most sought-after producers in all of Italy. This ancient estate has 35 hectares of superior holdings in the prized Castelnuovo dell’Abate zone, including the ‘Pianrosso’ vineyard (meaning ‘red field,’ a reference to the iron rich soils) and the ‘Fonte’ vineyard, which produces grapes for the Rosso di Montalcino. Plantings of Syrah, Cabernet, and Merlot are to the south, where the Orcia river provides a milder microclimate. The non-traditional wines are as exciting as the Brunello and Rosso: ‘Ateo,’ which means ‘atheist,’ is a statement against the restrictive laws that govern winemaking in Italy; the wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. 100% Syrah ‘Fabius’ is one of the greatest expressions of that variety in Italy and Parker once called it “the finest Italian Syrah I have tasted.” The estate is a member of the EU ‘Lotta Integrata’ movement, which promotes reduced use of chemicals and organic viticulture; at Ciacci, fertilization is organic, and pruning and harvest are done by hand.
