Producer: Newton Vineyard Vintage: 2018 Size: 750ml ABV: 14% Varietal: Bordeaux Blend Red Country/Region: United States, California Dried violets, potpourri, pine, blackcurrants and cloves on the nose. Ash, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, silky tannins. Layers of juicy blue and purple fruit and flowers. So sleek and refined. Builds on the palate. From organically grown fruit. Producer Information Newton Vineyard was one of the first wineries in the Spring Mountain AVA (American Viticultural Area) in Napa Valley, established in 1977 by Dr Su Hua and Peter Newton. In 1990, Newton was the first winery to produce and sell an unfiltered Chardonnay within the United States, making it a pioneer in the Napa wine industry. While the Chardonnay tends to be Newton's most well-known and popular wine, it also produces powerful red wines that have become renowned across the world. The Spring Mountain property lies on a steep slope with altitudes ranging between 490 to 1600 feet (150 to 490 meters) in the Mayacamas Mountain range, which separates Napa Valley from Sonoma County. In total the Newton estate is divided into 112 parcels, all planted to specific varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Chardonnay. All 112 parcels are vinified separately, so the winemaking team has plenty of options for putting together a final blend before bottling. In addition to the estate property, Newton also has holdings in Yountville, Mount Veeder, and Carneros, which the company uses for blends. The Puzzle is considered to be Newton's "cru" wine, a Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from the best parcels on the Spring Mountain, Mount Veeder, and Yountville properties. A bold and brawny Cabernet, it greatly benefits with time in the cellar. In addition to the famous unfiltered Chardonnay, Newton also produces an unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon and a Merlot. Those too impatient to cellar their wines can enjoy Newton's Red Label wines, a Cabernet Sauvignon, Claret, and Chardonnay that are made to enjoy after bottling. In 2001, part of Newton was sold to luxury group LVMH, and it continues to be one of the internationally known producers in Napa Valley. The founders previously founded Sterling Vineyards, also in Napa...

Full-bodied and tight on the palate, showing well-crafted tannins that are tight and supportive to the juicy berries and plush oak spices. Long and layered finish. Producer Information Duckhorn Vineyards has established itself over a number of decades as one of Napa Valley's most prestigious wineries. Unlike most Napa wineries, it is most famous for its Merlot, which founders Dan and Margaret Duckhorn saw as more than just a blending variety. Duckhorn makes a wide range of wines, from varietal and blended wines focusing on Merlot to wines made from other classic California varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. The estate was founded near St Helena in 1976. The first vintage, in 1978, consisted of 800 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon and 800 of Merlot. The Duckhorns came to appreciate Merlot for its approachability, smooth texture, and youthful drinkability, and today it forms the basis of the winery's flagship wines. In 2015, Duckhorn acquired the Three Palms vineyard – a site considered to be one of the best for Merlot in California. Duckhorn had purchased fruit from this vineyard since 1978 and, between 2011 and 2015, had been granted exclusive access to its fruit. Altogether, Duckhorn makes wines from more than 400 hectares (1000 acres) of estate vineyards, as well as bringing in fruit from independent growers. This includes sites in Howell Mountain, Yountville, Anderson Valley and the Russian River Valley. The collection is made up of several ranges including Paraduxx, Decoy, Goldeneye and Migration. Full-bodied and buttery, yet long, driven and vibrant. Excellent concentration. Producer Information In the golden, oak-studded hills of Paso Robles' fabled west side, not far from William Randolph Hearst's magnificent castle, there is a man with a Homeric vision. His name is Daniel Daou and he is devoting his life and every imaginable resource to creating, first and foremost, a Cabernet Sauvignon that rivals the very best in the world. Gracefully perched atop a stunning promontory at 2,200 feet, the DAOU Spanish Colonial style winery is embraced by a tangible serenity. Hawks wheel and bank while the all-day sun caresses close planted rows of lush, emerald green vines. The 100 percent calcareous soil makes no sound as it passes out nourishment and only a gentle breeze flows up through the Templeton Gap from the Pacific. The quiet is bewitching; you want to lay down roots here, just as the four-year-old vines have done. But the sense of peace belies the serious industry at work on this 100 acre estate. No effort is spared to create the luscious varietals and blends that flow from this limited production winery. This kind of synergy happens rarely: superlative climate and terroir, super intensive vineyard culture, and cutting edge viticultural practice.

The Debate began in 2010 when two friends brought their unique perspectives together to create thought provoking and delicious wines that extend beyond the sense of taste to the thrill of telling stories and the art of listening. By selecting three different vineyards with three different expressions of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the Debate seeks to point out the diversity of terroir as well as the diversity of people. We live in an age where less and less time is spent at the dinner table discussing these different points of view. The Debate mission is to bring people together to share a glass of wine to discuss and debate just as our team does.

Producer Information Markham Vineyards is a winery located in St Helena in Napa Valley, California. Established in 1879, it is one of the oldest continuously operated wineries in Napa County. Markham produce an array of wines, focusing on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Jean Laurent purchased the Markham property in 1879, and it remained in his family's ownership until it was purchased by Bruce Markham in 1978. Markham also had the foresight to purchase 142 hectares (350 acres) of land in Calistoga, Yountville and the Oak Knoll District, well before fame and recognition came to Napa Valley. This has meant that prices for Markham Vineyards wines are at reasonable prices compared to many of its neighbors who bought property after land prices in Napa skyrocketed. Markham focuses primarily on the Bordeaux varieties, blending across four vineyard properties to create a consistent product. The Character is the flagship offering, a Bordeaux blend of primarily Merlot, sourced from Napa Valley and aged for 30 months prior to release. The Altruist is the top-of-the-line Cabernet Sauvignon offering, sourced from the Yountville estate vineyards. The wines are classic Napa Valley in style: full-bodied, robust, and ripe.

The medium-bodied palate is powerful and grainy with seamless acidity and a long, fragrant finish. Producer Information The Eyrie Vineyards is a wine producer based in Oregon's Dundee Hills wine region. It was founded in 1965 by David and Diana Lett, who pioneered the cultivation of Pinot Noir vines in the Willamette Valley. In addition, David Lett was among the first in the AVA to cultivate Chardonnay, and was one of the first in the New World to plant Pinot Gris. In 1966, David Lett purchased a 20 acres (8 hectare) plot with red volcanic soils and south-facing exposures in the Dundee Hills. The vineyard was named after the red-tail hawks, or Eyrie, that nested at the site. Today, this vineyard is the source of the estate's Original Vines Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay wines, as well as the South Block Pinot Noir. From this initial planting, the estate has expanded to include four additional vineyards: Daphne Vineyard, Roland Green Farm Vineyard, Sisters Vineyard and Outcrop Vineyard. All five vineyards are farmed organically and have been certified as such. In vintages when the grape harvest is particularly low, the estate also purchases fruit from other local organically farmed vineyards. Winemaking at The Eyrie Vineyards is traditional. Fermentation occurs without artificial temperature control in small fermenters that increase yeast-air contact. A 60-year-old basket press is used to crush a portion of the grapes from each vintage. In some years, a small amount of Pinot Noir is fermented in whole clusters, barreled and aged separately, and later blended with the remaining vintage. Fermentation is followed by spontaneous malolactic fermentation. The wines age in barrels that date back as far as the 1970s, and only 4 percent of the oak barrels are new. Depending on the vintage, barrel-aging can take place for up to two years. The wines are then bottled without fining and minimal filtration.

With great levels of integration, the tannins and oak add weight and power, with grip and length. Producer Information Robert Mondavi Winery is one of the most prominent wine producers in Napa Valley. Founded in 1966 by Robert Mondavi himself, the company is widely credited with kickstarting the modern era of California's wine industry. Robert Mondavi Winery makes a range of wines, from the value-driven Woodbridge and Private Selection labels to collectable, age-worthy wines from Napa Valley's famed To Kalon vineyard. Mondavi founded the winery after a less-than-amicable split from his family's business, Charles Krug. His stated aim was to swap quantity for quality, believing that good wine could be made in the valley. To Kalon, originally planted in 1868, became the epicentre of his estate, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc (often labeled Fumé Blanc in California) providing the backbone of the Mondavi range. Over the years, Mondavi has employed some of Napa's most famous winemakers, including Mike Grgich (of Chateau Montelena), Warren Winiarski (of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars) and Zelma Long (of Simi Winery). Today the winery makes wines from a host of grape varieties, including Merlot, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir and Moscato. The range spans vineyards throughout Napa, including sites in Carneros and Stags Leap. Mondavi's Private Selection wines fall under the sizeable Central Coast appellation, and Woodbridge wines are labelled under the generic California appellation, although many of the vineyards are located in Lodi. One of Mondavi's most high-profile contributions to Californian winemaking came via a collaboration with Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild. Opus One, the resulting wine, first appeared in 1980, and has gone on to become one of California's more iconic Cabernet Sauvignon wines, netting both high praise and high prices. Although Opus One is now a separate entity to Robert...

Crushed flowers, pipe tobacco, pomegranate, raspberry, and cinnamon all grace this sensual wine. The palate delivers earthy, spicy red berry flavors with a suave texture. Producer Information Sanford Winery is a Californian wine producer located in the Sta. Rita Hills region of Santa Barbara County. The estate is divided into two vineyard sites – Sanford & Benedict and La Rinconada – and is particularly known for its portfolio of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. The Sanford & Benedict vineyard was first planted to vine in 1971 by Michael Benedict and Richard Sanford, as they tried to create cool climate wines of equal standing to those being produced in Europe at the time. This vineyard is known for having some of the oldest plantings of Pinot Noir in Santa Barbara County. 21 hectares (51 acres) of these old vines are still in production today, producing low yields of grapes with concentrated flavor compounds. The vineyard sits on clay loam soils that are rich in calcium, perfect for the cultivation of both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, as well as a small quantity of Viognier. The neighboring La Rinconada vineyard was planted in 1997, and has a similar terroir, although Pinot Noir dominates here. Sanford's core wine range is founded on its portfolio of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines, which includes several single-block and single-vineyard expressions, as well as a collection of sparkling and rosé wines. The estate also produces wines based on Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc, Marsanne and Roussanne from vineyards located across Santa Barbara County. The Terlato family, owners of several global wine brands became majority owners and managing partners in 2005.

Producer Information Robert Sinskey Vineyards is a Napa Valley wine estate located in the Stags Leap District. The estate was founded by Robert Sinskey in 1988 and has been practicing certified organic and biodynamic farming since 1991. The estate is made up of 81 hectares (200 acres) of vineyard land in Stags Leap District and Carneros. Most of Robert Sinskey's wines are made from Carneros-grown fruit – primarily Pinot Noir as well as Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscat, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Zinfandel. The winery, however, is based in Stags Leap District. The estate received extensive re-planting after the Atlas Fire of 2017. The flagship of the wine portfolio is the Cabernet Sauvignon varietal wine, sourced from the Stags Leap vineyard called SLD. Grapes are almost completely dry-farmed, in order to reduce yields, leading to small clusters of grapes with thick skins. SLD is aged in 40-percent new oak for up to two years prior to bottling. The remaining Robert Sinskey portfolio is a combination of single-vineyard, varietal wines and a library collection of cellar-aged wines. The Commander Zinskey is an innovative release of a classic Napa Valley Zinfandel that is illustrated with a new heroic scene inspired by sci-fi tales.
