Reviews: Wine Advocate: Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Tanbark Hill Vineyard opens with fragrant scents of lavender, red Morello cherries, fresh black currants and black raspberries, plus hints of dried Provence herbs, pencil shavings and iron ore. Medium-bodied, the palate is bright, refreshing and elegant, offering plenty of crunchy red and black fruit with a soft texture and mineral-tinged finish. This is great value for a wonderfully pure, authentic taste of Napa! Wine Spectator: This red is distinctive, with a racy savory streak buried amid the mix of sassafras, menthol, loganberry, sweet bay leaf and juniper flavors. Juicy and racy in feel, with a tingle of iron through the finish. Approachable, but cellaring will coax more out of this. Producer Information Philip Togni planted their first vines near the top of Spring Mountain in the Napa Valley in 1981. Those phylloxera vulnerable rootstocks have now gone, replanted in the early nineties. Reveals a bit of tarry grip on the finish, along with a cast iron hint, but should round into form soon enough. Reviews: Wine Advocate: It's telling that even Togni's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Tanbark Hill Vineyard—the early-drinking wine—needs a few years in the cellar. The barest hint of bell pepper accents bold cassis fruit and notes of wild thyme on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is fairly open and generous, with enough suppleness to suggest only five years of cellaring will be necessary. Classically styled, it's streamlined in shape and long on the finish, ending with mouthwatering acids and soft tannins. Vinous: The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Tanbark Hill Vineyard is soft, open-knit and an absolute delight to taste today. Silky contours wrap around a core of red berry fruit, rose petal and spice. This gracious, understated Cabernet Sauvignon is a real charmer. Producer Information Philip Togni planted their first vines near the top of Spring Mountain in the Napa Valley in 1981. Producer: Philip Togni Vintage: 2021 Size: 750ml ABV: 14% Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon Country/Region: United States, Napa Valley The medium to full-bodied 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Tanbark Hill Vineyard delivers complex notes of mountain fruit, with hints of sage and bay leaf accenting cassis, blueberries and raspberries. In the mouth, it's firmly buttressed by grainy tannins, with terrific acids that linger on the finish in mouthwatering fashion. Producer Information Philip Togni Vineyard is a small, family-owned Napa Valley wine producer, focused on producing high-quality wine from Cabernet Sauvignon. It is one of the oldest producers of the Spring Mountain District AVA (American Viticultural Area). The wine collection is simple, featuring varietal Cabernet Sauvignon sourced directly from the estate. This wine has strong characteristics of Spring Mountain, quite tannic in its youth but shows its elegance with age. For the impatient, the second label Tanbark Hill is a Cabernet Sauvignon produced from younger vines on the property, and is more approachable in its youth. Additionally, there is a sweet wine in the style of Constantia called Ca' Togni. The Philip Togni Vineyard was planted in 1981 by Philip Togni with his wife Birgitta, on an ideal ten acre (4 hectare) plot, 2000 feet (600 meters) above sea level. Today, Philip Togni is remarkably a self-contained producer, meaning that everything from vineyard management to winemaking, bottling and shipping is completed on site.

Reviews: Wine Advocate: The terrific 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Tanbark Hill, a second label composed of declassified fruit, suggests the declassification may have been too strict in this vintage. It possesses a dense purple color as well as a sweet nose of cedar, smoke, white chocolate, blackberries, and cassis. Ripe, expansive, and precocious, it should be at its peak of drinkability between 2010 and 2025. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate offers up intense notes of crushed black currants, fresh blackberries and ripe red plums with hints of pencil lead, black raspberries, underbrush and unsmoked cigars plus a touch of tapenade. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers bold, crunchy black and red berry layers with a lively backbone and firm, grainy tannins, finishing long and energetic. Jeb Dunnuck: Taking lots of air to show at its best, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a brilliant, classic, age-worthy wine from this great estate. It certainly shows the more structured, vibrant style of the 2018 vintage with lively acids, yet it has utterly classic Cabernet crème de cassis and almost blue fruits as well as Bordeaux-like notes of lead pencil, cedarwood, tobacco, and assorted floral nuances. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it brings rock-solid intensity, perfectly ripe yet building, firm tannins, and again, the vintage's freshness, purity, and elegance. It reminds me of a top Saint-Julien and classic, old school, structured Cabernet that will reward bottle age. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a classic Togni wine, meant to be laid down for at least a decade and capable of aging well for 20 years beyond that in a cool cellar. Hints of green olive and thyme add savory nuance to the raspberry and cassis shadings on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is concentrated into a dense, streamlined shape that throws off waves of dusty tannins, buffered by hints of cedar and vanilla, with lingering cassis notes on the finish. Vinous: The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a classy, sophisticated wine that shows the more restrained side of the year and this site. I imagine the 2019 will flesh out in time. Bright acids, red-toned fruit, dried herbs, mint and silky tannins convey finesse more than power. I especially admire the aromatics today. Grippy yet inviting, with the flavors melding wonderfully through the long finish, where a sense of freshness pervades. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The flagship wine, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate from his vineyard high on Spring Mountain is a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. It seems slightly more approachable and civilized for a young Togni wine, with a dense ruby/purple color, loads of blackcurrant, licorice, and graphite, some earth and spice, but very subtle earth nuances. It is full-bodied and rich, but the tannins are well-integrated and don’t scream as loudly as some vintages of Togni can. For Togni, this is probably one of his more forward and precociously styled Cabernets. It will probably approach drinkability in several years, but don’t discount its aging potential, as this easily has 20-25 years of cellaring potential. Vinous: Togni's 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is quite dark and powerful, but also very much medium in body. Graphite, smoke, savory herbs, mint, leather and a core of inky dark red and purplish fruit infuse this deep, beautifully layered Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2014 is a wine built on energy and aromatics that won't hit its stride until at least age ten. Producer Information There are few winemakers still living with the kind of history that Philip Togni has under his belt. Long before his eponymous winery was even conceived, he was crafting some of the most iconic wines in California. After a year at Mayacamas (1959), he became the founding winemaker for Chalone, worked at Inglenook for a year, became the founding winemaker for Chappellet (producing the acclaimed 1969 Cabernet Sauvignon that is still regarded as one of the greatest ever produced in California), and finally at finished out the 1970’s at Cuvaison. In 1981, while still employed at Cuvaison, he began planting his own vineyard on Spring Mountain and...

This wine is ageing very gracefully indeed, and benefits from decanting. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Philip Togni is one of California’s most foresighted winemakers, holding back a small amount of wine and releasing it at age ten. This year, small quantities of the 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate were released, and, as I almost invariably do, I rated it higher than I did initially. It is a classic Cabernet Sauvignon that apparently turns to Bordeaux for elegance, structure, and complexity, yet retains Napa’s extraordinarily sweet, rich, concentrated fruit. This profound 1995 still tastes like an adolescent. For my palate, it will benefit from another 4-5 years of bottle age, and should last easily for another 20-25 years. It is unquestionably one of California’s as well as the world’s greatest Cabernet Sauvignons. Vinous: Togni's 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is simply dazzling. Deep, unctuous and explosive, this Cabernet Sauvignon screams with the essence of exotic spices, iron, graphite, leather, smoke, game and dark fruit. The 1995 gets better and better with time in the glass, revealing myriad shades of dimension and extraordinary balance. Although stunning today, the 1995 has at least another decade ahead of it. The 1995 was made from the original vines that were ten years old at the time. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is deep garnet-purple colored with a gorgeous, meat and yeast extract-laced nose with notions of ceps and truffles over a core of crème de cassis, blackberry compote and star anise plus hints of camphor and potpourri. Medium-bodied, fine, fresh and delicately played with loads of spice and savory layers, it finishes on a compelling perfumed note. Vinous: Full, bright ruby-red! Pure and complex if subdued on the nose, offering scents of plum, briary dark berries, spice cake and dark chocolate. Densely packed, fine-grained and concentrated, conveying a lovely restrained sweetness and excellent depth of texture. No rough edges here in spite of the wine's seriously firm structure. Intense, sharply delineated mountain berry flavors convey a medicinal reserve, a distinctly savory quality and lovely juicy energy. This Cabernet is still a bit ungiving but its acid backbone and firm but harmonious tannins promise more positive evolution ahead. An excellent showing for this palate-staining wine, which will be long-lived and may yet gain in breadth.

The fleshy feel lets everything linger on the finish, with a tarry tug at the very end. Vinous: The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is stunningly beautiful, especially in the way it brings together intense, voluptuous fruit and structure. Racy and polished in the glass, the 2012 races across the palate with intense dark red stone fruit, spice, cedar, tobacco and floral notes, all in an energetic, vibrant style that suggests 25-30 years of aging will be a breeze. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Dramatically better, the dark ruby/plum/garnet-hued 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate exhibits a subtly herbaceous nose with hints of sweet raspberries and black currants in the background. More backward than other great vintages such as 2007, 2005, 2004, 2002 and 2001, this medium to full-bodied, substantial 2008 needs 3-4 years of cellaring and should age for 15-20+ years. Still grippy and should age slowly. Reviews: Wine Spectator: Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate offers up a crème de cassis, violets, dark chocolate and licorice core with nuances of lavender, unsmoked cigars, beef drippings and iron pan plus a touch of baking spices. Medium to full-bodied with a solid frame of plush tannins and great freshness, it has a wonderful core of muscular fruit and plenty of power juxtaposed by bags of finesse in the multilayered finish. Vinous: A majestic, towering wine, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is even more striking in bottle than it was from barrel. Deep, unctuous and remarkably vivid for such a big, intense wine, the 2013 simply conquers all of the senses, from the intellectual to the hedonistic. A host of dark red cherry, pomegranate, spice, mint and floral notes meld together in the glass, but the 2013 is a wine to admire for its total sense of completeness. This is easily the greatest young Philip Togni wine I have ever tasted. Simply put, the 2013 is magnificent and one of the wines of the vintage. Grippy yet inviting, with the flavors melding wonderfully through the long finish, where a sense of freshness pervades. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate has a wonderfully earthy nose of truffles, tilled soil and mossy bark over a core of fresh blackcurrants, black plums and blueberry pie with a waft of bay leaves. The palate is medium-bodied, elegant and refreshing with a beautiful quiet intensity and great freshness, finishing long and earthy. The 2014 is a wine built on energy and aromatics that won't hit its stride until at least age ten … I tasted a large number of wines during my most recent visit to this benchmark estate on Spring Mountain. Best to cellar short-term, although it's less rustic and backward at this stage than in previous vintages. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon has to be one of the great buys left for profound Napa Cabernet... Brilliant notes of cedar, spice box, cassis, smoke, and licorice soar from the glass, as if this wine were pretending to be a first-growth Pauillac. Full-bodied, powerful, still with a boatload of tannin to resolve, and just a faint lightening of the dense purple color at the rim, this is a brilliant wine from a vintage that produced relatively quick-evolving wines, but no such thing is tolerated at Philip Togni. This is a great Cabernet Sauvignon with the exuberance, purity, and richness of fruit that Napa provides, but with a Bordeaux structure that Togni, with his Bordeaux upbringing, somehow builds into the wine. Vinous: I have always adored Togni's 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate because it captures both the natural intensity of the year and the vibrancy that makes these wines so compelling. Powerful and explosive, with huge density, the 1997 hits the palate with waves of dark fruit intermingled with savory herb, charcoal, tobacco and grilled herb overtones. Even with all of its intensity, the 1997 has enough textural richness to drink for another 10-15 years, maybe more, as there is still quite a bit of structure and tannin. Hints of cedar, tobacco, crushed leaves and game add the closing shades of nuance. Uncompromisingly dry yet surprisingly supple on entry, then intense, sharply delineated and alive in the middle palate, showing a repeating pungent wild herb quality to its intense dark berry flavors. Not at all a sweet style but subtle and extremely long, with the tannins remarkably suave for mountain fruit. There's a peppery, savory energy here that I love but also plenty of body and palate presence. Finishes with terrific lift and emerging notes of leather and pine needles. A bit sauvage and idiosyncratic, this Cabernet is the full Togni. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon impresses for its length and total class. Mocha, game, smoke, graphite and plums are all supported by veins of cool, insistent minerality. This isn’t a blockbuster Cabernet, rather it is a wine that impresses for its finesse and precision. Sweet red cherries, mint, pencil shavings and violets are some of the notes that are layered into the super-refined finish. As always, Togni’s Cabernet Sauvignon is distinguished for an extraordinary bouquet that recalls some of the great wines of the Medoc and the structure to age gracefully for years. It will be interesting to see if the 2010 blossoms in bottle. Vinous: What a thrill it is to revisit the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate, a wine that has delivered on all the potential I sensed back when I first tasted it from barrel nearly a decade ago. Time flies. In the glass, the 2010 is dark, heady and rich, with striking aromatic nuance and tons of complexity. Unctuous dark fruit, grilled herbs, cloves and licorice build into the intense, exotic finish. It is a classic Philip Togni wine at its first plateau of maturity. In 2010 the harvest took place entirely in October. Because of the cold growing season, the crop was thinned significantly in order to allow for the fruit to ripen. Yields were down approximately 50%. Producer Information Philip Togni Vineyard is a...

Reviews: Wine Advocate: Each year Togni releases about 100 cases of a 10-year old Cabernet... It is a fabulous example of Togni’s visionary winemaking style. This inky/ruby/purple-tinged wine still tastes like a young adolescent. The extraordinary aromatics offer up scents of smoke, spices, sweet blackberries and cassis, saddle leather, and pain grille. With fabulous texture and sweet tannin, this remarkably young wine is a profound example of mountain Cabernet Sauvignon that should last for another two decades or more. Vinous: Togni's 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate opens with extraordinary aromatics. The sweet tobacco, gravel, smoke, leather and spice notes that have developed in bottle are utterly captivating. Producer Information Hall Wines is a wine producer located in St Helena, in California's Napa Valley. It specializes in wines made from the Bordeaux varieties, and in particular Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. The estate was founded by Katheryn Walt Hall and her husband Craig after she inherited vineyards from her father – a grapegrower in the region. Around half of Hall's wines come from around 300 acres (120 hectares) of estate vineyards in St Helena, while the rest comes from a number of grower vineyards throughout Rutherford, St Helena, Atlas Peak and the Alexander Valley. Grapes are handpicked block by block in each vineyard, with individual plots depending on soil type and terroir. The majority of the red grapes are then taken to the Hall winery in Rutherford, whereas the Sauvignon Blanc grapes and the fruit for the Napa Valley Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon wines are taken to the winery in St Helena for vinification. An early proponent of sustainable agriculture, Hall's Bergfeld Winery in St Helena was California’s first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certified winery in 2013. Hall uses both natural and select-strain yeasts for fermentation. Some of the wines go through malolactic fermentation in small French oak barrels before being racked into larger French oak barrels for aging. The wines are also aged in bottle for a time before release – it is this long aging period that is typical of the Hall style. The Howell Mountain Cabernet...

Producer Information Clos du Bois is a California producer located in Sonoma County with close ties to the history and development of the Sonoma wine industry. It was founded in 1974 by Frank Woods and the first commercial wines produced were a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir. Clos du Bois now has a large portfolio and its production is over one million cases annually. The company has a selection populated by wines at a range of price points, but are mostly made from varieties common in California and Sonoma – Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. In 1978 Clos du Bois introduced Sonoma's first Bordeaux-style red blend, while Frank Woods was also a significant force in popularizing appellation and vineyard designations on California labels, favoring them over brand names. Clos du Bois began with a relatively significant amount of land for a new winery: just over 210 hectares (520 acres). Over the course of its history it has been an advocate for sustainable and green vineyard practices. The winery has over 4000 solar panels which provide almost the entirety of its energy needs. Woods sold the winery in 1988, eventually leading to its purchase by beverage giant Constellation Brands Inc. The winery and brand were among several lower-end Constellation brands sold to Gallo in a deal that was approved in January 2021. Although the winery has since been mothballed, the brand continues to be produced.

Producer Information Decoy Wines is a label established in the 1990s as a second brand of the Napa Valley-based Duckhorn Vineyards. Decoy now produces a number of value wines from a variety of grapes from Sonoma County and in specific vintages, Napa Valley. Decoy initially came about as a single wine, a red Bordeaux-style blend, within the Duckhorn catalogue. Its success grew into a wholly new brand with a focus primarily on Sonoma County instead of the Napa Valley Merlot that Duckhorn had been known for. The Decoy Red blend is still the flagship, but the winery has grown to include single-variety Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. In 2012 and 2013, Decoy acquired its first estate vineyards, the Ridgeline Vineyard and Brownell Vineyard, both in the Alexander Valley AVA. Ridgeline sits at a high elevation on the slopes of Oak Mountain and grows Bordeaux varieties. Brownell Vineyard is in the valley floor on gravel soils that retain heat well and allow the vineyard to grow ripe, robust Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are made from a combination of estate and grower fruit.

It has wonderful notes of cassis, dried flowers and graphite, with impeccably fine, filigree tannins and a remarkably long, detailed finish. Reviews: Tim Atkin: Very much sui generis, this impressive Cabernet Sauvignon is a great wine to put into a blind tasting. Made with fruit from two single vineyards, it's youthful, stony, grippy and compact with considerable depth and intensity, fresh acidity, fine 20% new oak and inky damson and blackcurrant fruit. James Goode: Many questioned the choice of Cabernet Sauvignon for the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde, but Craig Wessels’ viticulture is impeccable, and the winemaking sympathetic. The result is intense and structured with powerful blackcurrant and berry fruits, supported by firm structure, with some savoury gravelly and ashy notes. This is powerful, concentrated but has freshness. Producer Information Restless River is definitely one to watch in South Africa. They've been quietly gaining a fiercely loyal following, thanks to their Burgundian-style Chardonnay and ultra-elegant Cabernet Sauvignon. The project came to life in 2012, and is run by dynamic husband and wife team Craig and Anne Wessels. Full-bodied, the textured palate is rich with flavors of brown sugar, sweet vanilla, baking spice and hints of toasted oak. Balanced with fine-grained tannins, the finish is savory and lingers. Producer Information Paying homage to the heritage of our esteemed wine region, Durant & Booth is a symbol of the heart of the Napa Valley lifestyle and will become everyone's "must-have" Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. Frederick Durant and Joseph and Willis Booth formed a partnership in 1897 and took over the Oakville store from Jennie and Mel Kemper Sr. naming it Durant & Booth. That same year, Joseph became the postmaster of Oakville with Frederick taking over the duties in 1911 for a brief stint. Oakville began to thrive in the early 1900s with the building of churches and schools and everyone in the town, rich and poor, shopped for necessitates at Durant & Booth. With the Booth brothers clerking at the store, Durant moved to San Francisco to open a grocery store in the Sunset District where he sold Napa Valley wines. He continued to split his time between San Francisco and Oakville for the next 10 years. In 1921, he returned to Oakville and operated the store through prohibition offering sandwiches, sunglasses, hats, maps and more for the out-of-town visitors seeking bootlegged wine and liquor. Durant lived out his remaining years in Oakville until he died in 1943, and was remembered as “Quiet and unassuming…” according to his obituary. Today, the historic family home of Durant & Booth stands at the gateway of one of the unsurpassed wine regions of the world and the home is now one of the finest Victorians from the era.

Revealing a deep purple hue as well as a killer bouquet of cassis, currants, lead pencil, graphite, and violets, it hits the palate with a full-bodied, sumptuous, layered mouthfeel that carries lots of velvety tannins as well as remarkable freshness. It's certainly a large-scaled, voluptuous 2018, yet it still has that vintage's laser-like focus as well as structure. Over the next three years of living there full-time and then traveling back and forth from Napa Valley, I became steeped in the culture, lifestyle, food and wines. My husband, DJ, visited me often and we traveled throughout southern France, the Languedoc, and the Rhone. We became even bigger fans of the regional wines, as well as the complete Mediterranean way of life – the kitchen gardens, local fresh food, anything slathered in olive oil and sprinkled with sea salt – all of which are enhanced by the delicious, food-friendly wines. These wines and ideals are a big part of our lives in Napa, so it was only natural to begin our wine project with California Grenache and Syrah, and vineyards that would allow them to touch their full potential. Producer: Apothic Wines Vintage: 2018 Size: 750ml ABV: 13.5% Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon Country/Region: United States, California This wine shows terrific balance and harmony. Quite delicate and smooth texture on the long finish. Producer Information Apothic Wines is a range of wines produced by California's largest wine exporter, E.J. Gallo. It began with a single wine, the Apothic Red, which was first released in commercial volumes in 2010. The wine is a blend of Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, made in a full-bodied style with ripe, fruit-forward characters and some residual sugar. The wine's easy-drinking style was an immediate hit and Apothic wines followed up with the Apothic Dark, a fuller and more savory red blend, and a white wine made from Chardonnay, Riesling, and Pinot Grigio. Apothic Inferno was produced in 2014 and was a blend of 51 percent Zinfandel with remainder made up of Merlot, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Pinot Noir and Dornfelder. In February 2015, a limited-release red blend of Petite Sirah and Pinot Noir was sold as Apothic Crush.
