Producer Information Pian dell'Orino is a leading Montalcino wine estate. Well-known for its reds from the Sangiovese grape, the estate has 22 different clones planted to the variety. The 6 hectare (15 acre) estate covers four different vineyards in Montalcino, located next to the famous vineyards of Biondi Santi. The chalk-rich soils have proved very well suited to the Sangiovese grapes that are grown here. Proprietors Caroline Pobitzer and Jan Hendrick Erbach have farmed the estate organically and biodynamically for many years. Pian dell'Orino's top wine, the Bassolino di Sopra, is sourced from the upper part of the Bassolino vineyard. This inaugural vintage was 2007, and since has only been produced in the best years. In 2006 and 2004, a Riserva without a vineyard designation was made instead. The standard Brunello di Montalcino wine – called Vigneti del Versante from 2010 – is sourced from the Bassolino and Cancello Rosso vineyards. It is aged for around 45 months in large oak vats. The lineup also includes a Rosso di Montalcino that spends a year in oak barriques, and the Piandorino, a varietal Sangiovese made under the Toscana IGT designation. This wine is made with fruit from the more fertile parts of the vineyards, and is regarded by the estate as a more obviously fruity wine than the classic Montalcino style. Pian dell'Orino gained considerable attention in 2016 when the Bassolino di Sopra wine received a 100-point rating from Robert Parker's publication The Wine Advocate.

Producer Information Tenuta Il Poggione is an estate in the Montalcino DOCG appellation of Tuscany, particularly known for its rich, dense Brunello wines balancing ripe fruit, savoury elements and a classic structure. These are considered to be some of the greatest wines produced in Italy. The estate covers 530 hectares (13000 acres), with 140ha (336 acres) planted to vines and 50ha (124 acres) to olive trees. The remainder is dedicated to cereals, livestock and forestry. A new winery was built in 2004, but winemaking is a mix of modernity and tradition with a focus on larger French oak barrels aged in underground cellars. The younger Brunello vines – less than 20 years old – provide the fruit for the Rosso di Montalcino. This is aged for 12 months in barriques and large oak oaks. The standard Brunello is aged for three years in large French oak barrels. The Riserva Vigna Paganelli is only produced in the best years from the oldest vineyard on the estate, planted in 1964. Producer Information Nello Baricci, the founder of the estate, was born in Montalcino in 1921. In 1955, with the few savings of a lifetime, he bought the Eastern slope of the Montosoli hill, a very special place with a long tradition of Sangiovese cultivation dating back to the Middle- Age. The Montosoli hill was already famous for the production of high-quality wines thanks to its exceptional combination of soil composition and micro-climate. When the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino was established in 1967, Nello Baricci was already considered a Master of Sangiovese. He put the first signature and received the badge #1. Giuseppe Maria Sesti founded the estate in 1987 and since then has gained an international reputation for his Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino and Toscana IGT wines from varieties including Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Giuseppe's background as an astrologist has influenced his farming and winemaking practices which follow the lunar calendar. The idyllic Sesti estate includes the Castle of Argiano, which is featured on the wines' labels, and spans 102 hectares (254 acres), only nine hectares (22 acres) of which are planted to grapevines. The first vines were planted in 1991 near the castle on south-facing slopes.
