Producer: Pian dell'Orino Vintage: 2019 Size: 750ml ABV: 14% Varietal: Sangiovese Country/Region: Italy, Tuscany The 2019 Rosso Di Montalcino is ripe but energetic, with pure red cherry, rose petal, orange peel, and white pepper. It is medium-bodied, with elegant ripe raspberry with a graceful feel. Producer Information Pian dell'Orino is a leading Montalcino wine estate. Well-known for its reds from the Sangiovese grape, the estate has 22 different clones planted to the variety. The 6 hectare (15 acre) estate covers four different vineyards in Montalcino, located next to the famous vineyards of Biondi Santi. The chalk-rich soils have proved very well suited to the Sangiovese grapes that are grown here. Proprietors Caroline Pobitzer and Jan Hendrick Erbach have farmed the estate organically and biodynamically for many years. Pian dell'Orino's top wine, the Bassolino di Sopra, is sourced from the upper part of the Bassolino vineyard. This inaugural vintage was 2007, and since has only been produced in the best years. In 2006 and 2004, a Riserva without a vineyard designation was made instead. The standard Brunello di Montalcino wine – called Vigneti del Versante from 2010 – is sourced from the Bassolino and Cancello Rosso vineyards. It is aged for around 45 months in large oak vats. The lineup also includes a Rosso di Montalcino that spends a year in oak barriques, and the Piandorino, a varietal Sangiovese made under the Toscana IGT designation. This wine is made with fruit from the more fertile parts of the vineyards, and is regarded by the estate as a more obviously fruity wine than the classic Montalcino style. Pian dell'Orino gained considerable attention in 2016 when the Bassolino di Sopra wine received a 100-point rating from Robert Parker's publication The Wine Advocate.

The estate's Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva are the flagship wines of the portfolio. Pian delle Vigne was acquired by Marchesi Antinori in 1995 and spans 184 hectares (470 acres), 65 ha (161 acres) of which are planted to Sangiovese. The vineyards are planted on predominantly southeast facing slopes of clayey and calcareous soils rich in stones at altitudes between 430 to 825 feet (130 to 250 meters) above sea level. The "older" half of these vineyards was planted to vine between 1996 and 1997. Producer Information Tenuta San Giorgio was an idea of Guido Folonari, heir to one of the most historical Italian wine families, who decided to develop, in 2001 an ambitious wine project. "When I decided to start this adventure alone, I really decided to get up and go. What was I looking for? I did not even know myself. I was looking for a place that would thrill me. I was lucky enough to find three “. So, in a short time, he found three wineries in the most prestigious production areas between Piedmont and Tuscany, which emerged in the Italian wine scenario and were immediately recognized as "the three Killer B's" by Guido Folonari. Tenuta San Giorgio is part of Guido Folonari's enological project, heir of a historic Italian wine family; three estates located in the most prestigious and renowned areas of Italy: La Morra, Bolgheri and Montalcino. Restored to its former glory, the estate is located in Castelnuovo dell’Abbate, in a beautiful setting of the territory of Montalcino.

Very well structured, yet soft, long-lasting flavour with smooth, velvety tannins. Producer Information Tenuta Il Poggione is an estate in the Montalcino DOCG appellation of Tuscany, particularly known for its rich, dense Brunello wines balancing ripe fruit, savoury elements and a classic structure. These are considered to be some of the greatest wines produced in Italy. The estate covers 530 hectares (13000 acres), with 140ha (336 acres) planted to vines and 50ha (124 acres) to olive trees. The remainder is dedicated to cereals, livestock and forestry. A new winery was built in 2004, but winemaking is a mix of modernity and tradition with a focus on larger French oak barrels aged in underground cellars. The younger Brunello vines – less than 20 years old – provide the fruit for the Rosso di Montalcino. This is aged for 12 months in barriques and large oak oaks. The standard Brunello is aged for three years in large French oak barrels. The Riserva Vigna Paganelli is only produced in the best years from the oldest vineyard on the estate, planted in 1964. It is aged in the same way as the "normale" but for (at least) an extra year. Cuttings from the Paganelli vines are used for any new plantings. Il Poggione makes a range of wines outside of the Brunello DOCG as well. These include a Sangiovese-Merlot-Cabernet blend under the IGT Toscana designation, and a Vin Santo from Sant'Antimo. A white Toscana IGT combines Vermentino and Chardonnay, while the rosé is made entirely from Sangiovese. There is also a Moscadello di Montalcino and a sparkling wine. The estate was founded in the late 19th Century by Lavinio Franceschi, a landowner on the hills above Florence, who bought land and began planting Sangiovese vineyards and introducing modern farming methods. Il Poggione remains in the same family. Today it is owned by Lavinio's descendents, Leopoldo and Livia.

Producer Information Fuligni is a family-owned estate, located on the eastern side of Montalcino. It is known best for its Brunello di Montalcino produced exclusively from Sangiovese Grosso grapes. The estate has around 10 hectares (25 acres) of mostly Sangiovese vines, split between four vineyards. These are found primarily located on east- or southeast-facing slopes with rocky soils. The cellars are located at Cottimelli in an 18th Century residence which was once the home of Medici grand dukes. The Fulignis are originally a Venetian family whose long history includes service as mercenaries in the court of Edward III of England in the 14th Century. Luigi Fuligni was given an estate in the Maremma when recruited as a general for the Duke of Tuscany in 1770, and members of the family moved to Montalcino to make wine in 1900. The Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino spends around 30 months in large oak barrels, and is then aged for a further 18 months in bottle. The Riserva, which is only made in the best years, spends 36 months in barrel and two years in bottle before its release. Fuligni also produces a Rosso di Montalcino, Ginstreto, from selected parts of the vineyards, as well as an IGT Toscana from a blend of Sangiovese and Merlot.

Medium-bodied, round and juicy. Reviews: Raffaele Vecchione: Relaxed and well pronounced in the classic profile, it allows notes of raspberries, currants, red plums and ripe strawberries to emerge. Medium body, soft tannins and a fresh and fragrant finish. So much beauty in the fruit here and little oenology. Producer Information Although he always enjoyed visiting vineyards and attending tastings, Giuseppe Maria “Giugi” Sesti did not initially choose a career in wine. Instead, his Venetian upbringing inspired him to study music, art, and astronomy, the last of which became his profession. He met his future wife in North Wales while writing his first book on this topic, and in 1975 Giugi and Sarah moved their family to Tuscany, where they bought the abandoned ruins of the hamlet and castle of Argiano, slowly clearing the land and restoring the buildings to create the breathtaking estate we see there today. Giugi was now a father of four, vice-director of a local Baroque opera festival, and actively writing books on astronomy, but he miraculously found spare time to visit local wineries and help his neighbors in the vineyards and cellar. His passion for wine grew along with his experience, and in 1991 he planted his own vineyards on the slopes around the castle. The children helped pick and stomp grapes from the earliest age, and though they, too, pursued international studies in various fields, they always managed to come home for the harvest. In 1999 the couple’s only daughter, Elisa, joined the estate full time, and today she is an active partner in all aspects of the vineyard management and winemaking. While helping out at neighboring estates Giugi observed that simplicity and careful attention were the most important factors in producing great wines, while chemical intervention skewed their delicate balance; so he determined to make entirely natural wines right from the start. He even took a pioneering extra step by applying his prodigious knowledge of the moon’s influence on living things to his vineyard management and winemaking. Today the family continues this thoroughly eco-friendly philosophy (although no official certification currently meets their personal standards), and Elisa’s...

Producer Information Valdicava is a wine estate located in a valley of the same name in Montosoli in the north of Montalcino, Tuscany. The estate focuses solely on the production of Sangiovese, generally creating two expressions each year; a Rosso di Montalcino and a Brunello di Montalcino – and, in the very best years, the single-vineyard Madonna Del Piano. The grapes for this flagship wine come from some of the oldest vines on the property, which were planted in 1970. The vineyards cover approximately 28 hectares (70 acres) of the Valdicava estate. This is split into nine different vineyards scattered around the site, which is one of the coldest in the Brunello zone. The grapes from the vineyards Filai Lunghu, Lago, Cipressi and Nova are used for the Rosso di Montalcino, while those from the Poggio, Pievecchina, Pratea and Sferracavallo are reserved for the Brunello di Montalcino. Large Slavonian oak barrels are used for neutral aging. Brunello Valdicava was first produced under Martini Bramante, who brought the property in 1953 and began bottling wine in 1968. Today, the winemaker and owner is Vincenzo Abbruzzese, who is well known for improving the quality of Valdicava's wines. The 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Madonna Del Piano was awarded a perfect 100 points from Wine Spectator, while the 2010 release received 99 points from American wine critic, James Suckling.

Aroma is intense with hints of berries, fresh fruits and a hint of cherry. Harmonically dry, it has strength and freshness with an elegant aromatic finish. Producer Information Nello Baricci, the founder of the estate, was born in Montalcino in 1921. In 1955, with the few savings of a lifetime, he bought the Eastern slope of the Montosoli hill, a very special place with a long tradition of Sangiovese cultivation dating back to the Middle- Age. The Montosoli hill was already famous for the production of high-quality wines thanks to its exceptional combination of soil composition and micro-climate. When the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino was established in 1967, Nello Baricci was already considered a Master of Sangiovese. He put the first signature and received the badge #1. Moreover he registered the 1st hectare of Brunello at the Chamber of Commerce in Siena, a real pioneer in the history of Montalcino. The first bottle of Rosso di Montalcino was produced in 1968 and the first Brunello in 1971. Today Baricci is the only producer to have all his vineyards (5 Ha) in the Montosoli “Grand Cru”, plus the cellar. The estate is now managed by Nello’s grandsons, Federico and Francesco. In Montosoli the Pliocene marine-soil gives the Sangiovese vines great richness in mineral substances, plus its rocky structure (quartz, marnes, scist, fossils) guarantees a good drainage in the rainy seasons, which is a fundamental prerogative for a high-quality grape ripeness. The micro-climate is the other great component making this area so exceptional. The Montosoli Cru is located in the Northern area of Montalcino. The higher altitude works as a barrier from the heating and the warm winds coming from South. Moreover, the adjacent cooler and humid Valdarbia area to the North, contributes to lower the avarage temperature and to increase the humidity. This cooler climate makes the ripening process slower than in other areas of Montalcino. Here, usually the harvest is delayed of 15 days than in the warmer Southern sites. These characteristics give the wines perfect ripe tannins, great acidity and a very balanced sugar concentration, what translates in a Rosso full...

Producer Information Argiano is an estate in the Tuscan region of Montalcino. It is well-known for its Sangiovese-based red wines under the traditional Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, and more modern red wines under the IGT Toscana designation. Argiano's history dates back to the construction of the villa, which dates back to the late 16th Century. By the time it was completed in 1596, it is believed the estate had started to produce wine (records show olive oil was being produced at this time). The land and villa changed ownership between various aristocratic families but only flourished as a winery in the 19th Century after it came into the possession of Lady Ersilia Caetani Lovatelli. In 1967, Argiano was a founding member of the Brunello Consortium set up to advance and promote the wine region. In 2013, the estate was sold to a Brazilian business group, which began to make improvements to the winery and increased land holdings from 50 to 60 hectares (124 to 150 acres). Argiano makes several wines: the flagship Brunello di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, Vigna del Suolo (a single-vineyard Brunello); a Rosso di Montalcino; and two IGT wines called Solengo and Non Confunditur. Suolo, like the Brunello, is 100 percent Sangiovese, but the Solengo and Non Confunditur wines are both Bordeaux blends with a little Syrah, and in the case of the Non Confunditur, Sangiovese. Total production is around 337,000 bottles of which roughly 100,000 are Brunello di Montalcino. Argiano was one of the producers accused of using non-permissible grapes in their blends as part of the "Brunellogate" scandal in 2009....

This is a terrific vintage with moderate summer temperatures and a long growing season that agrees very much with Sangiovese, a grape that takes its time to ripen and develop complexity.
