Producer: Buena Vista Vintage: 2020 Size: 750ml ABV: 14.5% Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon Country/Region: United States, California Expressive and lush nose of creamy berries, dark cherries, vanilla, cassis and sweet oak spices. Full body with fine, creamy tannins. Rich and full of generous creamy berries and an equally demonstrative and dense finish with excellent length. Producer Information Buena Vista Winery is located on the Sonoma side of the Los Carneros AVA in California. Founded in 1857 by Agoston Haraszthy de Mokesa, it is considered to be the oldest winery in northern California and its founder as the father of California wine. Today, Buena Vista produces a large array of wines, mainly focused on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Agoston Haraszthy de Mokesa immigrated to the US from Hungary in 1840, and eventually made his way to northern California in hopes of finding his fortune in the Gold Rush. He saw Sonoma's fantastic potential for growing vinifera grapes instead, and planted vines in Carneros. In 1869, Haraszthy tragically died in an alligator-infested river in Nicaragua, and the winery was forgotten until 1943, when it was purchased by Frank and Antonia Bartholomew. Bringing on the famous winemaker André Tchelistcheff, they replanted the vineyards and restored the winery, producing their first vintage in 1949. In 2011, Buena Vista became part of Boisset Family Estates, which owns several wineries, including Raymond Vineyards in Napa. The Los Carneros AVA is shared between Napa and Sonoma counties. With its strong, cooling breeze from the San Pablo Bay, it is suitable for cool-climate varieties including Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Merlot and Syrah also do well on the clay-dominated soils. Buena Vista grows all four of these varieties, and they are the focus of the portfolio. In addition, Buena Vista sources fruit from all over Sonoma County to make a range of other wines.

Producer: Buena Vista Winery Vintage: 2018 Size: 750ml ABV: 15% Varietal: Zinfandel Country/Region: United States, California The 2018 release opens with aromas of plum preserves, dried mulberries and a waft of dusty earth. Flavours of dried berries mixed with spicy notes and toasted pumpkin seeds coat the palate. A seductive interaction of oak and fruit provide a chewy texture with structured tannins and a long finish.

"As a young winemaker, my philosophy is to surround myself with great mentors and work with great growers. I’m not trying to insert myself into the wines. For me, winemaking is about putting yourself out there and working with what the vineyard and the vintage give you – at this point it’s all about learning as much as I can and making wines the way that feels right. It’s a winemaker cliché, but I want to make the wines that I want to drink. And beyond that, wines that I could afford to order at a restaurant,” he said.

Fresh black cherry, loose-leaf tobacco, and dark strawberry are lifted by almond and toffee on the finish. Producer Information They say good fences make good neighbors, but it was a love of wine and winemaking that was the entrée between Opolo owners Rick Quinn and Dave Nichols. Their two families have lived side-by-side in Camarillo since 1996. As Nichols remembers, “I knew Rick to say hello to, but that was about it. Then one day, he said to me, ‘Hey Dave, I just planted 10,000 grapevines!’ “ And so began the evolution of Opolo, one of Paso Robles’ newest labels. Quinn and Nichols have been neighbors in two counties since 1997 when Nichols bought vineyard property adjoining Quinn’s. Together they now own about 280 acres of vineyards in Paso Robles, about 200 acres on the Eastside and 80 on the Westside. The Westside vineyards are in the Adelaide Hills, producing wines such as Pinot Noir and Sangiovese, while the Eastside properties produce varietals such as Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The majority of vineyards have been producing fruit since 1998, and a small percentage of it has been finding its way into wine made by Quinn and Nichols ever since. 1999 marked the first commercial crush under the Opolo label, when Quinn and Nichols produced Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Zinfandel, and Muscat Canelli. Quinn and Nichols have essentially taken over the viticulture and winemaking duties, not an easy task considering they both still have their "day jobs." Quinn used to own one of the largest Century 21 brokerages in the country and Nichols runs his own wireless electronics firm.

It offers plenty of dark fruits, toasted oak and black pepper accents on a full body that is saturated with grippy tannins. Producer Information Stuhlmuller Vineyards is tucked into a unique river bench and hillside location in the southwestern edge of the Alexander Valley where three of Northern Sonoma County's top appellations come together, virtually a stone's throw from Chalk Hill and the Russian River Valley. After selling grapes to a number of area wineries, in the mid-90's Fritz Stuhlmuller decided to put the family's name on a label, working with winemaker Kerry Damskey to produce small lots of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon from 150-acres of estate vineyard. The cool climate and varied soils and exposures create Chardonnay with classic Alexander Valley tropical characteristics plus crisp citrus/apple notes and a distinctive mineral touch. The Cabernet Sauvignon adds hints of sage and bay leaf to the region's rich cherry, black fruit and cocoa. In 2000 a new winery was built on the property, a vest pocket gem sized precisely to handle the small amount of fruit the Stuhlmullers select from special blocks for their own wines.

Reviews: Wine Enthusiast: Full bodied and superripe tasting, this wine shows powerful black cherry, cedar and cinnamon flavors on a firmly tannic texture, but maintains a nice polish in the mouthfeel. Producer Information Quilt Wines is a Napa Valley wine producer based in Rutherford, producing a small range of labels from fruit sourced across the Napa Valley AVA. It primarily focuses on Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay but also produces a red blend. The name Quilt is a reference to Napa's "rolling patchwork of vineyards". Quilt was established by fifth generation Napa winemaker Joseph (Joe) Wagner, who initially worked alongside his father at Caymus Vineyards before establishing Belle Glos in the early 2000s. Although based in Rutherford, Wagner's wines, including Quilt, Belle Glos and his Copper Cane range, are sold through the Quilt & Co. tasting room established in central Napa town. Four main labels are produced: the Quilt Cabernet Sauvignon; the Quilt Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon; The Fabric of the Land red blend (including Merlot, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and Petit Verdot); and the Quilt Chardonnay. The red wines are made from fruit sourced across the Napa Valley AVA, predominantly on the valley floor although up to a third of the wine can include fruit from higher elevations in the area. The Chardonnay is primarily Carneros-grown.

Upon entry, this wine glides across the palate, with a silky-smooth texture supported by well-integrated tannin. Flavors of dark cherry, tobacco spice, and subtle toasted oak give way to a juicy mouth-watering finish. Producer Information Far Niente Winery was established in Napa Valley, California, in 1885 by John Benson. It is a producer of premium Cabernet Sauvignon and one of the most storied California wineries. Benson was the uncle of American impressionist painter Winslow Homer and a "forty-niner" – he travelled to California in 1849 during the California Gold Rush that saw a huge influx of people into the region. Benson bought land in Oakville and had a gravity-flow winery built and vineyards planted. The estate was profitable until Prohibition (1920-1933) caused the winery to be abandoned. In 1979 Gil Nickel bought the winery and adjacent vineyards and began to refurbish them. The Benson name was kept until the words "far niente" were found inscribed in stone at the front of the winery – part of the Italian expression il dolce far niente or 'without a care'. A red wine made from Cabernet Sauvignon and a white wine made from Chardonnay are the only wines produced, and the first vintages (1979, ’80, ’81) were vinified offsite until the restoration was completed in 1982. The winery is now on the National Register for Historic Places. In 1998 a bottle of Far Niente Sweet Muscat from 1886 was discovered in a private California cellar. The bottle looks to be the oldest intact bottle of Californian wine, and the label is believed to have been illustrated by Winslow Homer. There are several vineyards in the Oakville appellation that provide grapes for the Far Niente wines. The Martin Stelling vineyard provides fruit for the Cabernet Sauvignon, and bounds Heitz Cellar's famous Martha's Vineyard, as well as Harlan Estate. Fruit for the Chardonnay comes from several vineyards in Coombsville, a cooler area just east of...

Producer Information Black Pearl Wines is a winery owned and operated by the Nash family, who relocated from New Hampshire in 1995. We now find ourselves fervently making wine. The vineyard is on the western slope of Paarl Mountain, which is part of the Cape Floral kingdom. Above stretches renosterveld, of which only 2% remains in the country and which the family is conserving in this World Heritage area. The name "Black Pearl" was inspired by the fact that the vineyard is situated on the slopes of Paarl Mountain, and Paarl Rock resembles a black pearl after it has rained. Black pearls also have rarity value. The name of our blend "Oro" comes from the God Oro, King of the Firmament, who gave the black pearl as a gift to the ocean.

Producer Information Decoy Wines is a label established in the 1990s as a second brand of the Napa Valley-based Duckhorn Vineyards. Decoy now produces a number of value wines from a variety of grapes from Sonoma County and in specific vintages, Napa Valley. Decoy initially came about as a single wine, a red Bordeaux-style blend, within the Duckhorn catalogue. Its success grew into a wholly new brand with a focus primarily on Sonoma County instead of the Napa Valley Merlot that Duckhorn had been known for. The Decoy Red blend is still the flagship, but the winery has grown to include single-variety Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. In 2012 and 2013, Decoy acquired its first estate vineyards, the Ridgeline Vineyard and Brownell Vineyard, both in the Alexander Valley AVA. Ridgeline sits at a high elevation on the slopes of Oak Mountain and grows Bordeaux varieties. Brownell Vineyard is in the valley floor on gravel soils that retain heat well and allow the vineyard to grow ripe, robust Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are made from a combination of estate and grower fruit. Parent company Duckhorn also owns the labels Paraduxx, Migration, Goldeneye, Canvasback and, latterly, Calera (acquired in 2017). The wineries employ a collaborative approach and, as a result, a number of wines are the product of consultation between the different winemakers.

Producer Information William Hill Estate is located in the southern part of Napa Valley, right off the region's iconic Silverado Trail. It makes a wide range of wines though Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are to the fore. The estate sits on 200 acres (80 hectares) of land in the southeast of the valley, on the Silverado Bench at the foor of Atlas Peak. Here a cooling influence from the San Pablo Bay promotes a long growing season. The rocky benchland soils have low fertility and cause the vines to struggle and produce small yields of highly concentrated fruit. They contrast with the rich sandy loams of the valley floor. Vineyard elevations and exposures vary, and some parcels of estate vines lie in more fertile lower areas. Each block is vinified separately. William Hill's flagship wine, Benchmark, is sourced from the best blocks in the estate vineyards. It is only made in small quantities – just over 200 cases a year. It is a blend based on Cabernet Sauvignon. Depending on the vintage, smaller amounts of Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot may also feature.

Turns smooth and supple, finishing with polished tannins. Reviews: Wine Advocate: There are 10,200 cases of the remarkable 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate. Opaque purple-colored with a dense, chewy, full-bodied personality, it displays abundant cassis, mineral, and earth notes. This brilliantly made, super-concentrated, pure, blockbuster possesses sweet tannin as well as a terrific finish. Vinous: Good medium-dark red with a healthy rim. Sexy red berry aromas are lifted by exotic spices and complicated by notes of smoke and leather (Barrett noted that this vintage showed a brett element early on but today the leathery nuance is just another note of complexity in the wine, as it was in a sample I tried two years ago as part of my 1997 horizontal tasting.) The palate delivers a lovely combination of sweetness and silky, fine-grained texture, with tactile raspberry and redcurrant fruit delivering surprising freshness and energy. Not hugely concentrated or thick but finishes broad and deep, with a firm tannic spine to support continued graceful evolution. Producer Information Chateau Montelena is one of the most prominent Napa Valley wineries. It was directly associated with bringing international recognition to the California wine industry through the 1976 Judgment of Paris. Based in Calistoga, it is famous for its varietal Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines. Despite its claim to fame with Chardonnay, the flagship wine of Chateau Montelena has actually been its Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. It was born in the early 1980s, when the estate vines had matured enough to start producing quality fruit. After fermentation in stainless steel, it is barrel-aged in a series of tunnels and caves beneath the winery for up to 22 months. Also sourced from Chateau Montelena's home vineyard is the Estate Zinfandel. After extensive investment into reworking the vineyard, the 2018 vintage saw the wine return from a five year hiatus.
