Producer: Felton Road Vintage: 2021 Size: 750ml ABV: 14% Varietal: Chardonnay Country/Region: New Zealand, Central Otago Producer Information Felton Road is a wine estate in the Central Otago sub-region of Bannockburn. It is one of New Zealand's best known and most highly respected producers, and its Pinot Noir wines are considered some of the best expressions of that variety in the New World. Felton Road also produces several wines from Riesling and Chardonnay. The estate is composed of four vineyards on warm, north-facing slopes in Bannockburn: the original Elms Vineyard, the MacMuir vineyard the Calvert and the Cornish vineyard. Elms was first planted in 1992 and is where the 'Block' series wines come from. Felton Road harvests grapes by hand, and follows the minimal intervention ethos in the winery, with gravity-fed systems, wild yeasts and no fining or filtering of the red wines prior to bottling. The Pinot Noir wines are all made the same way: around a quarter of the fruit is kept as whole bunches, and there is a 5-10 day cold soak before a wild ferment. After fermentation, the Bannockburn, Cornish Point and Block 3 Pinot Noir mature for 13 to 14 months in barrel, with the Calvert and Block 5 spending 16 to 17 months. The Block 1 Riesling, Felton Road's top white wine, is grown on heavier soils and shows a rounder texture with tropical passionfruit flavors.

Full-bodied, supple and warm yet silky and so easy to drink, with plenty of length and a touch of chocolate on the finish. Producer Information Domaine la Barroche is a family-owned wine producer based in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The domaine was founded in 1703 by Alexandre Barrot and today cultivates the classic southern Rhône grape varieties Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah, as well as Cinsault, Clairette Blanche and Vaccarèse. The domaine's Grenache vines date back to the first part of the 19th Century, with older grape varieties such as Terret Noir and Clairette Rose also planted in the vineyard. In total, Domaine la Barroche encompasses 15 hectares (36 acres) of vines planted across the northern and northeastern sections of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. The grapes are cultivated on a variety of vineyard plots including Les Terres Blanches, Les Cabrières and Grand Pierre. In these plots, sandy topsoils and large pebbles (the iconic rolled pebbles, or "galets roulés") lie on deeper layers of limestone, with other plots occupying soils of red clay and red sandstone. The flagship Domaine la Barroche Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine is a blend of predominantly Grenache, hand-harvested from 100-year-old vines, as well as smaller quantities of Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsaut. Each variety is vinified and aged separately: Grenache in old oak casks, Mourvèdre and Syrah in contact with their lees in barrel and Cinsaut in stainless steel tanks. This aging period takes approximately 18 months and the wine undergoes no filtration before being bottled.

It is delicious wine, with white flowers and stone fruit aromatics leading to a full bodied, juicy core, loaded with flavors of peach, apricots, pineapple and pear. Producer Information Kistler Vineyards is a wine producer in northern California's Sonoma County. Its considerable reputation is thanks largely to its robust, buttery Chardonnay wines, which have established Kistler as a cult winery since the 1980s. The company was founded in 1978 by Steve Kistler and remains a family-owned and operated winery. It is a relatively small producer, making just 35,000 cases annually, much of which is sold through its significant mailing list. Kistler's focus is the Burgundy varieties, making 10 vineyard-designated Chardonnay wines and four designated Pinot Noir wines. The fruit comes from three AVAs within Sonoma: Sonoma Coast, Sonoma Mountain and Carneros (which overlaps with the Napa Valley AVA). Kistler is seen as one of the pioneers of the buttery, fruit-driven Chardonnays that have come to be closely associated with California. In the winery, the use of small, new-oak barriques and malolactic fermentation have been used over the years to achieve this style of wine. Recent trends have seen a move away from this style, however, and Kistler is beginning to experiment with making more restrained styles of the variety.

Reveals a late twinge of fleur de sel, which keeps everything honest through the lengthy finish. Vinous: Glistening orange-pink. Vibrant, mineral-accented cherry, peach, and honeydew scents, along with orange pith and floral nuances. Stains the palate with juicy red berry, citrus fruit and lavender flavors that show very good depth as well as liveliness. Producer Information Domaines Ott is a wine producer based in the south of France and the producer of some of the most prestigious rosé wines in Provence. The domaine is made up of three estates: Clos Mireille, Château Romassan and Château de Selle, and covers wines falling under both the Bandol and Côtes de Provence appellations. Being Provence, rosé makes up an important proportion of the domaine's wines, and is made from classic Mediterranean varieties like Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsaut and Syrah. Domaines Ott also produce several red and white wines across the appellations and the estates. A fourth line, By.Ott, was added recently and comprises a rosé, white and red wine made in the refurbished Château de Selle winery. The estate was founded by Alsatian Marcel Ott, who arrived in Provence in 1896 and began buying vineyards in the post-phylloxera period when vineyard land was reasonably cheap. The three estates were added over the course of the 20th Century: Château de Selle was acquired in 1912, Clos Mireille in 1936, and finally, Château Romassan in 1956. Each of the three estates makes two wines, and all are bottled in the distinctively shaped bottles which represent the undulating landscape of Provence.

Delicate hints of herbs contribute an additional layer of complexity to the ensemble. Producer Information A family estate since 1966, Domaine du Bouchet is 10 hectares in size and has been crafting wine for decades, with the latest owner, Antoine Gouffier, shaking things up. Born and raised in the villages of Pouilly-Fumé, as a young adult Antoine chose to embark on a decade of backpacking around the world. Traipsing through America, Argentina, Africa, and even the Middle East he learnt new methods and ways of life outside of the borders of France. In America he began with learning all about the three-tier system from various wine importers, then his time in Argentina was spent with Michel Rolland and his right-hand-man Thierry Haberer of Clos de los Siete wine estate. Once arriving in South Africa Antoine worked and learned from Duncan Savage, and as a sweet surprise it was where he met Ilse Nel, his now wife. This led to a massive shake up once returning home to France and taking over from the Kerbiquet family at Domaine du Bouchet. Instantly making his mark Antoine set about planting new vines, renovating the cellar, purchasing new equipment and amphorae. He also began experimenting with old oak barrels with his wines.

Nose: powerful, rich and elegant, with aromas of candied fruits and flowers. Palate: well-balanced, with a great length. This is a wine without excessive sweetness. Producer Information Maison M. Chapoutier is one of the most recognizable – and sizeable – producers in the Rhône Valley. It is known for its wines from both the north and south of the valley, but in particular for its red and white Hermitage wines, made from Syrah and a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne, respectively. The family's history in the Rhône dates back to 1808, but it wasn't until 1879 that Polydor Chapoutier transitioned the family from growing grapes to making and trading wine. In 1988, Michel Chapoutier took the company reins, and a push toward quality saw the Chapoutier label begin to gain international recognition. Michel Chapoutier eschewed the use of traditional, large format chestnut foudres for aging, instead moving toward smaller oak casks with shorter aging periods. He also advocated keeping the wines unfiltered and unfined, and to work with only biodynamically or organically grown fruit across all of the vineyards. From 1996, all M. Chapoutier labels have included braille in honor of Maurice Monier de la Sizeranne, who created a form of modern abbreviated braille, and was the original owner of the Chapoutier vineyard in Hermitage (indeed, "Monier de la Sizeranne" is the name of Chapoutier's top Hermitage wine).

The palate continues with citrus, mango, lychee and pineapple balanced by a crisp acidity and lively effervescence. An Inniskillin classic! Producer Information Inniskillin is a Canadian winery with locations in Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario and the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia. The winery has a detailed history and is best known for its iconic ice wines produced from Vidal, Riesling and Cabernet Franc. Inniskillin Wines was granted the first winery license in Canada since 1929 upon completion of the winery in Niagara in 1975. The first vintage was released 1977 but it was not until 1984 that Inniskillin produced its first ice wine from naturally frozen Vidal grapes. In order to gain international recognition, Inniskillin began importing wines to Canada and the portfolio included wines from Far Niente, Taltarni, Gaja, and Newton Vineyard. In 1991, Inniskillin attained major credibility and international recognition after winning the Grand Prix d'Honneur at Vinexpo in France with an ice wine made from Vidal. To produce the iconic ice wines, Inniskillin harvests grapes at night when approximately 80-percent of the water content in each berry is frozen. The grapes are pressed while still frozen, and the resulting juice is highly concentrated, with yields at about 10 to 15-percent of an average table wine harvest. Fermentation of this nectar is very slow and the final wines are always naturally sweet from remaining sugars. Inniskillin founded a second winery in Okanagan in 1994 and now produces a variety of table wines and ice wine in BC. Both wineries have since received many top awards and recognitions including the Best Ice Wine at the International Wine and Spirits Competition in 2005. Inniskillin produces non-oaked, oaked, and sparkling styles of ice wine and is sold in over 74 countries.

Even if the bouquet is still very reserved when young, it is clearly recognizable as a Scharzhofberger with its herbal, slate nose. The Auslese is creamy on the palate and shows a lot of aromas of pineapple, with some ripe mango and dried apricots. The delicate, mature and yet gripping acidity brings tension to the wine, although it is well integrated. Expressive and perfectly balanced, the high extract buffers, delicate play of aromas with salty-crystalline minerality shows the enormous potential of the wine. A wine for eternity! Reviews: Marius Klein: Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Auslese 2021 is still a sleeping giant at the moment. But woe betide if another 20, 30 years (and if you still have the time and patience, 50 years and more) have passed...then will we have an Auslese in the glass that can seamlessly join the series of grandiose wines of the century - perhaps the rebirth of the legendary 1921? Time will tell, but one thing is certain: this Auslese will easily outlast us all! Moselle Fine Wines: The 2021er Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese is a sweet wine made from botrytized fruit. It proves still rather reduced and needs a few minutes in the glass to reveal a stunningly clean nose of fresh orchard fruits, a hint of pineapple, and glorious notes of minty herbs and spices. The wine is still a touch firm on the zingy and incredibly playful palate and leaves a stunning note of fresh fruits and proves full of finesse. The combination of intensity, precision, and utter zesty-fruity balance is simply to die for. This is clearly a modern-day classic in the making. Producer Information Weingut Egon Müller is a renowned wine estate based just outside the village of Wiltingen in the Saar valley sub-region of the Mosel in Germany. It has inviting aromas of chocolate, cigars, dried herbs and classy oak spices over a core of dark fruit. The medium-bodied palate is silky and fresh with a long, flavorful finish, although it feels youthfully wound and will benefit from a few more years in bottle. James Suckling: Beautiful cabernet character here with blackcurrants and blackberries at the perfect level of ripeness, together with hints of walnuts, cedar and black olives. Graphite, too. Medium- to full-bodied, so silky and polished. Tightly packed tannins but refined and delicate at the same time. Lingering finish. Even and long. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2021 Riesling Ice Wine is unoaked and comes in with 219 grams of residual sugar, 10.2 of total acidity and 9.5% alcohol. This is from a year that the winery calls "one of the most challenging harvests on record," due to rainfall around harvest time by table wine standards. The Riesling harvest was a couple of months later, in early January 2022. A strict selection caused lower quantities to be produced, although the winery says with "high quality." Indeed, this seems fresh and lively, with a surprisingly perky feel and a juicy finish. It's on the elegant side this year, not necessarily a bad thing, but it still tastes great. It has the freshness to allow it to age well, so there is no rush. I loved the tangy finish. If you must drink it young, you'll get waves of peaches and apricots (leaning more to peach this year), and it will taste great. Wine Enthusiast: This is a glorious ice wine where acidity and sugar are in perfect harmony. The candied orange peel, ginger, straw and toasted walnut and straw are a mere preview of what’s to come.
