After graduating from college in 1989, he left for Denver, Colorado where he worked briefly as a sales rep for a large wine distributor. But the siren song of ski season in the Rockies grew louder as winter approached and Ehren headed for the restaurant scene in Aspen. Skiing by day and bussing by night, the 21-year-old would-be winemaker went from wine steward to sommelier/manager by the end of the season. As the snows and drinking crowds melted, Ehren headed to the Napa Valley with a posse of associates from the restaurant on the first leg of what was to be an extended journey during the Aspen off-season. However, finding the funds low, he presented himself on the doorstep of Joseph Phelps Vineyards looking for a temporary job as a tour guide. Three years later, after stints giving tours, working in the cellar, making sales calls with then VP, Bruce Neyers, and managing retail sales, Ehren finally left Phelps to try his hand at winemaking in the venerable vineyards of the Rhône Valley. Celebrated oenologist Jean-Luc Columbo took a chance on the erstwhile Ehren, whom he had met the prior year. A Francophile since adolescence, Ehren threw himself into all aspects of what seemed like turn-of-the-century winemaking in age-old caves and endurance-sport viticulture on the terraced hillsides of Cornas. During the sodden 1992 and 1993 vintages Ehren helped make Les Ruchets, Columbo’s own label, and visited many of Columbo’s clients, among some of France’s most esteemed wine brains. With 34 harvest under his belt, Ehren has now paved an influential path in the California winemaking world with his long resume of notable winemaking and viticulture jobs, leading to the honor of Winemaker of the Year in 2008 and continual high scores from critics. The nose is delicate and floral, with notes of cherry blossom, rose petal, and orange zest. The wine is rich on the palate with a mouthwatering freshness and vivaciously creamy bubble equal to many fully sparkling wines. Producer Information Brick & Mortar produces single vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from high elevation sites in Napa Valley, Sonoma Coast and Mendocino Ridge AVA. They produce Old world style, balanced wines that are bright and structured with low/moderate alcohol and distinct site characteristics. Owners Matt, Alexis and Troy Iaconis also specialize in a highly-acclaimed rosé as well as two unique blends of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, both picked the same day from the same two vineyards, comprised of the exact same blend percentage between Pinot Noir and Chardonnay – one as a white wine (Vin Clair) and one as a red wine (Vin Rubis). brick & mortar’s first single vineyard sparkling wine is set to be released in 2019. The name brick & mortar was founded on the fact the 2011 Pinot Noir would be the foundational wine of the winery. Given that Matt had spent the summer of 2011 in Burgundy, he fell in love with Pinot Noir and the cobblestone towns. When exploring names for the winery, he mentioned that when one goes through difficult times, a strong foundation is needed – and considering the foundation of some of the world’s longest standing buildings is made from many different variations of brick & mortar, the name was a perfect fit.

Cola, smoke and clove details show on the layered finish. Producer Information Kistler Vineyards is a wine producer in northern California's Sonoma County. Its considerable reputation is thanks largely to its robust, buttery Chardonnay wines, which have established Kistler as a cult winery since the 1980s. The company was founded in 1978 by Steve Kistler and remains a family-owned and operated winery. It is a relatively small producer, making just 35,000 cases annually, much of which is sold through its significant mailing list. Kistler's focus is the Burgundy varieties, making 10 vineyard-designated Chardonnay wines and four designated Pinot Noir wines. The fruit comes from three AVAs within Sonoma: Sonoma Coast, Sonoma Mountain and Carneros (which overlaps with the Napa Valley AVA). Kistler is seen as one of the pioneers of the buttery, fruit-driven Chardonnays that have come to be closely associated with California. In the winery, the use of small, new-oak barriques and malolactic fermentation have been used over the years to achieve this style of wine. Recent trends have seen a move away from this style, however, and Kistler is beginning to experiment with making more restrained styles of the variety.

Producer: Kosta Browne Vintage: 2021 Size: 750ml ABV: 14.2% Varietal: Pinot Noir Country/Region: United States, California A compilation of ripe, red and blue fruit ignites the senses with slight undertones of forest rain. Soft and smooth on the palate with pure electric dark berry flavors and deep, unified tannins add volume to a refined finish. Producer Information Kosta Browne is a Sonoma-based winery specializing in single-vineyard Pinot Noir wines. It was informally founded by Dan Kosta and Michael Browne when the two pooled their tip money from restaurant work and bought some Pinot Noir grapes in 1997. Using second-hand equipment and a single oak barrel, they made their first – extremely limited – Pinot Noir. In 1999 the pair secured financing to produce 2600 cases of Lake County Sauvignon Blanc, and Kosta Browne officially came into being, along with third partner Chris Costello, who helped with financing, in 2001. The company has now established itself as a cult winery commanding premium prices. The majority of Kosta Browne's wine is sold to its mailing list, which has a two-year wait time to join, and an even longer period to get access to its most celebrated single-vineyard offerings. In 2009, Vincraft bought a majority share of Kosta Browne with Kosta and Browne staying on in their roles. Vincraft's investment allowed Kosta Browne to transition from renting to owning its own winery in Sebastopol in Sonoma County. The 2009 vintage saw the addition of the One Sixteen Russian River Valley Chardonnay to the Kosta Browne collection – the only non-Pinot Noir wine in the portfolio. The 2009 vintage also yielded the highly regarded Kosta Brown Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, which went on to be named Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year in 2011. In 2015, the majority of shares were sold again to private equity firm J.W. Childs Associates, who bought out Vincraft in what was essentially an equity swap. Kosta and Browne maintained their shares and positions at the winery. Two years later, the pair stepped down from their roles (Browne had overseen winemaking while Kosta had looked after sales and marketing) and in 2019 the winery was sold to Duckhorn Vineyards.

This selection subsequently became known as UCD clone 37, or the "Merry Edwards selection". Edwards helped establish Matanzas Creek in 1977, and founded her own winery in 1997. The first vineyard, the 8 hectare (20 acre) Meredith Estate, was planted to Pinot Noir in 1998, and a second site, Coopersmith Vineyard, was established in 2001. Merry Edwards has since added several long-term leases to the portfolio, and in 2010, the estate was farming a total of 22ha (54 acres) of Pinot Noir. Merry Edwards added Sauvignon Blanc plantings to the estate vineyard portfolio in 2014 with a new property in Forestville on the lower slopes of the Meredith Estate. Merry Edwards produces an extensive collection of vineyard-designated Pinot Noir wines with Sauvingon Blanc and Chardonnay also featuring heavily.

La Crema sources fruit from all over California, including the Anderson Valley in Mendocino, Russian River Valley, Los Carneros, Sonoma Coast, and from Monterey and Arroyo Seco on California's Central Coast. All of these regions are known for producing quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and the wines are bottled by region. More recently, La Crema added Oregon's Willamette Valley to its roster. All wines are bottled regionally, and La Crema's most exclusive wines are the Nine Barrel Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, made from the best nine barrels from the Russian River holdings. La Crema's wines are rich and fruit-forward in style, and the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines see a significant amount of oak. The sleek, structured palate resonates with notes of raspberry, pomegranate pulp, river rock, and lavender. Producer Information In 2001 after finding a very intriguing 40 acre parcel in a remote part of the northern Sonoma Coast, I established Aston Estate with partners Fred Schrader (Schrader Cellars, Boars’ View) and Charles Sweeney (Vine Cliff). After planting 14 acres later that summer, we vinifed our first vintage in 2004 under the Aston Experimental label. As the years passed and the partnership evolved, the one thing that never changed was my commitment to the Aston Estate project. In the beginning, the style was a bit bigger reflecting what was currently happening on the coast, the unpredictability of the weather, younger vine characteristics and the logistics of hauling the fruit out of this remote site. With better access to the site, more vineyard activity in the area and older vines, it has become easier to take the quality of the fruit to exactly where we want it out at the Estate. There have been a few turning points out here in terms of wine quality. After tasting every single wine we’ve made from the estate a couple months ago, it was clear 2009 and 2015 ushered in new eras of quality. We think we may see the same thing with 2017 which will be offered later this summer. Earlier this year, I was offered the chance to own Aston outright. I knew immediately there was no way I could let this get away. After investing 20 years of effort into this now mature 14 acre plot of Pinot Noir, I’m proud to announce this will be part of the growing winemaking family for years to come.

Combined, they brought experience from numerous stop estates including Romanée-Conti, Dujac and Georges Roumier as well as Domaine Chandon and Stag's Leap Cellars. The Lemons bought a 12 hectare (30 acre) farm in western Sonoma County in 2003. Only around 2ha (5 acres) of this is planted to vines, with the remainder devoted to pasture with cows and hay for compost, and to undeveloped streams and woods. The estate vines, which make the Pivot Pinot Noir, are farmed without fertilizers according to biodynamic principles. Littorai's winery building, completed in 2008, is made from insulating reinforced straw bales, with natural ventilation for temperature control. Juice and wine is transported via gravity to prevent excess oxidation and preserve the phenolic compounds.

Producer Information Patz & Hall is a Sonoma-based wine producer, specializing in the production of small-lot Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from single vineyards around California. The collection is sourced from more than 30 different vineyards in Napa Valley, Carneros, Russian River Valley, Mendocino County, Sonoma Coast and Santa Lucia Highlands. The estate was established in 1988 by James Hall, Anne Moses, and Donald and Heather Patz. Collectively, they established contracts with growers around northern California to create a full portfolio of site specific wines. In the vineyard, grapes are hand-picked to preserve phenolics and prevent excess oxidation. Fermentation takes place in both stainless steel and French oak barrels. Patz & Hall has a unique stave wood program where it dries, seasons, and ages its own Burgundian oak staves for three years before the barrels are coopered, around 18 months longer than normal. The percentage of new oak the winery uses on each wine varies between 50 and 70 percent. In 2016, Patz & Hall was purchased by Chateau Ste. Michelle of which in turn was purchased by...

Rivers-Marie wines are sold exclusively through a mailing list, with annual production ranging from 60 to 600 cases per label. Winemaker Thomas Brown got his start in the wine industry working under Ehren Jordan at Turley Wine Cellars. Brown purchased the Summa Vineyard outright in 2010 and today produces two single-vineyard Pinot Noir wines from the vineyard, as well as single-vineyard Pinot Noir wines from Occidental Ridge Vineyard, Kanzler Vineyard and Silver Eagle Vineyard. Rivers-Marie began making Chardonnay in 2007, and today makes single-vineyard wines from the Thieriot and Joy Road vineyards, as well as a generic Sonoma Coast cuvée. Established in 1979, it is one of California's most consistent and well-known producers of Burgundian varieties including Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, as well as a more recent addition of Pinot Gris. Jess Jackson of Kendall-Jackson purchased La Crema in 1993, and the winery quickly gained a reputation for making quality wines at value prices. The Pinot Gris is aged in stainless steel, allowing the ripe fruit flavors to shine through. The wines are readily available across the United States and are frequently encountered internationally.

There is both good volume and richness to the delicious and velvet-textured middle weight flavors that possess good if not truly special depth and length on the ever-so-slightly warm finale. Reviews: Wine Advocate: I tasted three Pinot Noirs from Thomas Rivers Brown. The 2014 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is a heck of a bargain. Coming from multiple clones such as Mt. Eden, Dijon 828 and the Pommard selection, this delicious, flowery/rose petal-scented Pinot Noir offers up faint blueberries and raspberries, forest floor, a medium body and is seductive. Vinous: The 2014 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is juicy, delicious and extroverted, with striking purity and energy in its fruit. Succulent dark cherry, plum, spice and blueberry flesh out effortlessly. This is an especially forward, juicy Pinot that will drink well upon release. Most importantly, the Sonoma Coast is absolutely delicious. Even at its new price of $30 a bottle, the Sonoma Coast is a steal and in my view the single greatest value in California Pinot Noir. Full-bodied with bright, humming acidity that amplifies the flavors of dark fruit and mint. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2019 Pinot Noir UV-SL Vineyard comes from vines planted in 2006. The wine was bottled at the beginning of July 2020. Medium to deep ruby-purple colored, it starts out with beguiling scent notions of crushed rocks, tilled soil, truffles and garrigue over a core of kirsch, red currant jelly and black raspberries before giving way to a spicy, fragrant perfume of cardamom, Provence herbs and lavender. The full-bodied palate is super intense and fantastically layered, offering a rock-solid backbone of racy freshness and firm, fine-grained tannins. It finishes on a persistent earthy/ferrous note. Vinous: The 2019 Pinot Noir UV-SL Vineyard brings together some of the aromatic breadth of the UV with the textural resonance of the CIX. Rose petal, lavender, spice, menthol, kirsch and dark cherry fruit build in a Pinot that balances density, power and energy. Rich and layered in the glass, with striking inner perfume, the UV-SL is superb. The chardonnay wines are barrel-fermented and aged in French oak, a majority of which is new. This is a riper, richer wine than the Les Larmes, but remains very primary and has higher acidity. This Sonoma Coast will need more time to express secondary aromas, but the primary aromas are hypnotic. Producer Information Littorai is a small, family-owned producer in Sonoma focusing on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The estate makes a range of single-vineyard wines from these two varieties, sourced from a range of contract growers, leased vineyards and estate vines in the Sonoma Coast and Anderson Valley AVAs. The estate was founded in 1993 by Heidi and Ted Lemon.

Playing much less on fruit and more on earthy, savoury and textural qualities, this takes time to unfurl but, as it does so, shows spice and energy to match its density and layered fruit.
