The palate is multi-layered, offering a balance between richness and freshness. Producer Information Mullineux Wines is a notable South African wine producer located in the Swartland, known for producing terroir-expressive wines from the region's granite, schist, and iron-based soils. Founders and winemakers Chris and Andrea Mullineux have taken a natural approach to winemaking since the winery's establishment in 2007. In addition to the vineyards on their farm, they work with growers who approach farming with sustainable and natural methods. Mullineux's vineyards are planted to Syrah, Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Clairette, and Viognier. Syrah is the main focus of the estate and Mullineux bottles multiple expressions of the variety from the Swartland's different soil types. Mullineux wines are vinified with a minimalist approach. Aside from a small amount of sulfur, nothing is added to or removed from Mullineux's wines. Grapes are fermented with indigenous yeasts and macerated around four to six weeks before being pressed directly to barrel. All wines go through malolactic fermentation and mature in French oak barrels. When ready, they are bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Producer: Homefire of Sonoma Vintage: 2018 Size: 750ml ABV: 15.5% Varietal: Cabernet, Zinfandel Country/Region: United States, Dry Creek Valley This was obviously a denser, deeper, richer wine than the normal Homefire. It had more of a combination of black and red fruit. The fruit character is ripe, slightly jammy, dried (like a fruit leather, not raisinated). The oakiness in the wine is balanced, with subtle cocoa and carob notes. Producer Information Homefire Vineyard – We wanted to show that wines are better if made from vineyards that use organic-style farming methods. We created this vineyard from the ground up. The top 12-inches of soil are loam which becomes increasingly dense with depth. Our initial collection of Zinfandel vines are a St Peter’s Church clone grafted onto 110R rootstock which is well-suited to our soil conditions. The soil is balanced with natural components including more than 12-tons of compost per acre to date. Hales Vineyard – The old vines were planted in 1952. Half the vineyard is trellised, the other half, head pruned. Wilfred Wong calls the wine produced from these vines “classic Dry Creek Zin.” Mia’s Secret – This vineyard lies on a slope 1,200 feet above the valley. You’ll cross a couple streams and a washed out road to get there. But Zinfandel grown there is unlike any we’ve tasted; rich, mountain fruit, dark berry flavors and an exotic essence unique to the site.

Producer: Bodegas Volver Vintage: 2018 Size: 750ml ABV: 15% Varietal: Tempranillo Country/Region: Spain, La Mancha This inky violet-colored blend of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon has aromas of black cherry, blueberry, milk chocolate and nutmeg. It is both spicy and juicy on the palate, with flavors of eucalyptus, anise, blackberry and raspberry and notes of milk chocolate and roasted fennel, all wrapped in firm tannins that melt away into a gentle finish. Producer Information Bodegas Volver is a Spanish wine producer making wines in Alicante, Jumilla, Rueda and Castilla La Mancha. The brand was founded in 2004 by Jorge Ordoñez and Rafael Canizares to highlight lesser-known Spanish wine-producing regions in export markets. It has a diverse portfolio of brands, but production is largely focused on the Monastrell and Tempranillo grape varieties. Many of Volver's wines are made from the 110-hectare (272-acre) vineyard in La Mancha. Here, the soils are sandy and iron- and limestone-rich, and are planted to low yielding, dry-farmed Tempranillo vines. The best section of the land, the Finca Los Juncares vineyard, is 29ha (72 acres) and includes Tempranillo vines planted in 1957. The wine made from this vineyard, the Bodegas Volver is aged 18 months in French oak barrels and bottled unfiltered. Paso a Paso and Venta Morales are also made in the La Mancha vineyards. These two labels both produce a range of Tempranillo wines, but a couple of white wines are also made under the Paso a Paso label from Verdejo and Macabeo. In Alicante, Bodegas Volver make the Tarima Hill label, which is focused on Monastrell, a variety that does very well in the extreme climate here. Tarima Hill makes several Monastrell wines, and also has a range of white wines made from Merseguera, Macabeo and Moscatel. Bodegas Volver produces another Alicante wine, Triga, which is a blend of 85 percent Monastrell and 15 percent Cabernet Sauvignon from the bodega's oldest vines, some planted in 1925. Bodegas Volver's Jumilla vineyards are planted to Monastrell with vines ranging in age from 25-35 years. The region experiences extreme temperature fluctuations with little rain.

The vineyard was founded by the family’s forefather Smbat Mateossian, a successful businessman from Boston, who moved to Armenia in the early 1920-es. He dreamed of establishing his own winery. Unfortunately, Smbat was repressed by the communist regime, and his property was confiscated by the “bolsheviks” during Soviet times. In 2008 Smbat Mateossian’s family, current owners of Voskeni Wines, returned to Armenia from Russia and managed to buy back the lands once owned by their great grandfather, with the historical vineyards. The indigenous Armenian grape varieties are grown there — Voskehat, Areni, Kakhet, Haghtanat. The revival of the vineyards and the winery made Smbat’s dream of producing high quality wines come true.

The palate is powerful and complex. A wine of great finesse and an impressive length in the mouth. Producer Information Framingham Wines is located in the Wairau Valley in New Zealand's iconic Marlborough region. Its focus is on aromatic white grape varieties like Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Viognier, from which it makes a range of varietal and blended wines. The company was first established in the early 90's, releasing its first vintage in 1994. The vineyard has some of the oldest Riesling vines in Marlborough, dating back 30 years and grafted onto phylloxera-resistant rootstock on well-drained soils of stone and silt. The Wairau Valley's warm days and cool nights are excellent for Riesling, which often takes a back seat to Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Framingham makes a range of wines from Riesling, ranging from dry to sweet, botrytis-affected wines. Framingham's top tier is its F-Series range, which includes wines made in Auslese and Trockenbeerenauslese styles, as well as a Vendanges Tardives-styled Gewürztraminer. The standard range includes several varietal wines, including a couple of Pinot Noir-based wines and a Montepulciano. The palate has a very rich, intense delivery of beautifully ripe red cherries, framed in fine yet sturdy tannins. Long, fresh and energetic finish. Producer Information Bass Phillip is an Australian wine producer, located in the Gippsland wine region in the south of the state of Victoria. It produces a premium range of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that are renown for their ability to cellar. The core range of the Bass Phillip wine portfolio is the Reserve, Premium and Estate Pinot Noir, sourced from the same plots within the estate vineyard. Planted in 1979, these vines have been biodynamically cultivated since 2002 on deep mineral soils. The terroir is renown for cool temperatures throughout the growing season allowing grapes to slowly ripen and accure flavor compounds. In the winery, fermentation occurs via wild yeasts from the vineyard and winery. New and used French Allier barriques are sourced for barrel-aging, the length of which depends on the wine with the Reserve Pinot Noir spending a maximum of 20 months. The movement of wine is powered by gravity to prevent excess oxidation and to maintain complexity, no fining or filtration is utilized prior to bottling. Bass Phillip is named after the 19th Century explorer George Bass and Arthur Phillip, the first governor of the state of New South Wales.

The winery was founded on the converted Rancho Tinaquaic and now has 2,000 acres (809 hectares) under vine. The estate has vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley, Santa Rita Hills, Santa Ynez Valley and the Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara. Once the grapes arrive at the winery, the focus is then on ensuring the winemaking process is as unobtrusive as possible with careful selection of yeasts and limited fining and filtering. It's the most popular and widely available Pinot from the winery and should find a place in every Pinot-lover's cellar. Producer Information Patricia Green Cellars is located in the Ribbon Ridge district of Yamhill County on the 52 acre estate purchased in 2000 by Patty Green and Jim Anderson. The winery, and thus the two friends, are noted for producing a tremendously broad selection of Pinot Noirs from far flung vineyards representing some of the better sites in the Ribbon Ridge, Dundee Hills, Chehalem Mountains, and the Eola Hills growing regions. We look to produce Pinot Noirs that show the distinctions of the sites we work with. All of the vineyards we either maintain or purchase fruit from are extremely well-tended sites that seek to grow the best fruit possible through rigorous attention to detail on every single vine. To ensure that our sites truly show the characteristics of the soil, micro-climate and clonal material none of them use irrigation. In the winery the philosophy of attention to the smallest details is further extended all the way from the fermenting must to the final bottling process. All of our wines at all of their points of evolution are handled and manipulated as little as possible while being smelled and tasted on a regular basis. Our selection of barrels has been limited to one cooper noted for producing some of the best made Pinot Noir barrels in the world. As we produce as many as 15-16 different bottlings of Pinot Noir under our own label each vintage the decisions we make about the quality of every single barrel is quite rigorous ensuring that each bottling represents the best possible wine from each vineyard with which we work.

On the palate the wine is seamless and elegant. Quince and lemon pith flavors are complemented by a light, chalky undertone and a long mineral finish. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2020 Chenin Blanc Jurassic Vineyard comes from vines planted in 1982 at an elevation of 1,000 feet. It was fermented in barrel, with full malolactic conversion, and matured 10 months in used French oak. It has dynamic aromas of preserved lemon, lime peel, steel wool and beeswax with exotic herbal undertones. The energetic, medium-bodied palate balances intense California fruit with earthy bass tones and shimmery mineral character, while a good balance of tangy acidity and phenolic texture drive the long finish. Jeb Dunnuck: All varietal from a vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley, the 2020 Chenin Blanc Jurassic Vineyard reveals a medium gold hue to go with interesting notes of buttered orchard fruits, white flowers, spice box, and some subtle nutty, toasty nuances that emerge with time in the glass. It brings some richness and depth on the palate and is medium-bodied, has a round, supple mouthfeel, terrific balance, and a great finish. It's a variety you don't often see from the Central Coast, but this is terrific and well worth seeking out. Producer Information Hartford Family Winery was founded in 1993 as a result of Don and Jennifer Hartford's appreciation for the wines, the people, and the unique vineyards near their Russian River Valley home. Located in the Sonoma County town of Forestville, the winery is about 15 miles from the cool Pacific Coast. Making delicious wines of high personality is directly related to the difficult locations of the Hartford family's vineyard sources, the limited production of their bottlings and the varietals they use. Shows a fresh and juicy acidity backed with ripe fruit notes and firm fine grained tannins. Medium bodied with remarkable length, intensity and complexity. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2019 Vigno had a spectacular and ever-changing nose from the moment I uncorked it. It started with some meaty notes and slowly started developing subtle nuances of roasted coffee, milk with cinnamon and herbs. It has a vibrant palate that makes it feel light and medium-bodied even at 14% alcohol, but the very low pH (3.32) and remarkable acidity (6.38 grams of tartaric acid) clearly lift it up. This is delicious, a wine that never fails to amaze me. It matured in 2,500- and 5,000-liter oak foudres and barriques for 14 months. 11,568 bottles and 60 magnums were filled in February 2020. This is not pure Cariñena, as it comes from a field blend with 10% to 15% other grapes—Malbec, Cinsault, Carmenere and Cabernet Sauvignon—that certainly add to it. Vinous: The 2019 Carignan Old Vines Series VIGNO is a blend of 85% Carignan with Malbec, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carménère mixed at the Sauzal vineyard in Maule, which boasts old, unirrigated vines, before being aged for six months in barrels and subsequently foudres for another year and a half as per the plan set out by Marcelo Retamal. The Red and White Splash wines are St Francis' entry-level range. In 1971, Joe Martin planted Merlot and Chardonnay in Sonoma Valley, in what is now known as the Behler vineyard. Over the years they acquired more land, including the Lagomarsino vineyard in Russian River Valley and the Wild Oak vineyard in Sonoma Valley. Today, St. Francis has more than 380 acres (153 hectares) of vineyards. The vineyards' location throughout Sonoma means that St. Francis has a wealth of terroir to choose from. The Behler vineyard has gravel and loam soils and a cooling breeze from the Pacific coast, and is planted to Chardonnay and Merlot, which both do very well here. The Lagomarsino vineyard is situated on a hillside, with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon planted at the top where they get more sun, and Chardonnay at the bottom of the slope where it's cooler. Wild Oak vineyard is the most varietally diverse of the vineyards, with varieties like Malbec and Marsanne, as well as Cabernet and Chardonnay.

Raats is truly a family operation, and the clan firmly believes that South Africa's proliferation of older Chenin Blanc vineyards provides a unique opportunity to craft terroir-driven wines that serve as international benchmarks for the varietal. Raats owns several hectares of estate vineyards in the Polkadraai Hills. In addition, they source Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc from several extremely low-yielding old vines parcels where Bruwer maintains complete control of viticulture. These sites are characterized by complex soils of sandstone and decomposed granite. For Bruwer, the greatest part of crafting wines under your own label is that "you don't have to worry about shareholders or catering to a market, or to keeping within a cellar's style. You can have freedom of expression in something that you believe in." The Raats family continues to win over hordes of thirsty consumers worldwide with their passionate belief in the classic, versatile and decidedly stylish varietals of Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc.

Juicy blackberry dominates on the midpalate in concentrated form, seasoned in graceful hints of nutmeg and oak. "Character through adversity" is an expression that the Hartford family believes to apply to both people and grapevines, and they feel that surviving adversity builds character, and personality, in both. The Hartford Family makes wines under two marks, one of which is Hartford Court. Hartford Court bottlings are small lots of high-personality single vineyard Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that express the distinctive qualities inherent in each vineyard's terroir - the interplay of soil, slope, exposure and climate. The fruit is sourced from the Russian River Valley, Green Valley and Sonoma Coast appellations.

Producer: Altovinum Ratings: WA 90 JD 93 Vintage: 2019 Size: 750ml ABV: 14.5% Varietal: Garnacha Country/Region: Spain, Calatayud This 100% Garnacha offers a lovely perfume of spice box, mineral, and wild cherry. This perfectly balanced mix of flavors lends itself to an intensely fruity wine with loads of taste, a smooth texture, and a pure, fruit-filled finish. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2019 Evodia is pure Garnacha from old head-pruned vines in the Sierra Santa Cruz in Calatayud. It fermented with around 20% full clusters in concrete and matured mostly in concrete with just 20% of the blend put in used oak barrels for three months. There is a component that matured in concrete egg that I was able to taste separately that seems to bring a touch of freshness to the final blend, something welcomed in a warm year like 2019, which seems like a fresher version of 2017, when the wines achieved quite good ripeness. The nose opens up nicely in the glass and is quite aromatic and floral, exuberant, with a heady touch of ripe fruit. It's young and tasty, tender and pleasant to drink, with a forward personality. A real bargain. I hope there are more wines like this in Aragon, where the wealth of Garnacha vineyards would make it possible quite easily. Jeb Dunnuck: Based on 100% Garnacha, the 2019 Evodia is a killer value that delivers incredible Garnacha flair at a crazy good price. Kirsch, blackberry, acacia flower, violet, and sandalwood notes give way to a medium to full-bodied, seamless, beautifully layered wine with fabulous tannins, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. This is the finest wine at this price point in the world. Producer Information Calatayud is a fairly innocuous and rural region of Spain. As far as the eye can see the hills and plains are blanketed with head-pruned vineyards, primarily Garnacha. Just to the north of Calatayud is Campo de Borja, Navarra and Rioja Baja so this sea of Garnacha is a small part of a wider ocean. Much of the inexpensive and pleasurable Garnacha sold in the US comes from these regions in Spain and Eric Solomon was an early pioneer and proponent. Years ago while working on a project in Calatayud, Eric Solomon met Jean-Marc Lafage and Yolanda Diaz. Yolanda is a native of the region and knows the...

On the palate, perfectly ripe red berry and fruit flavors are accompanied by a balanced structure with firm ripe tannins and a touch of warm spices on a gentle toasty finish. Producer Information Hahn Family Wine is one of the oldest operating estates in the Santa Lucia Highlands of Monterey, California. The company makes wines from various varieties and regions, but is particularly known for its Pinot Noir wines from estate vineyards. The estate now covers 650 acres (260 hectares) in the Santa Lucia Highlands, and 460 acres (190 hectares) in the Arroyo Seco AVA. The estate was set up by Swiss couple Nicolaus and Gaby Hahn with the purchase of the Smith and Hook vineyards in 1979. At the time, the area was much better known for horses and livestock than it was for wines. Hahn's first vintage was released in 1980 and Nicky Hahn led the move to establish the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA, which was achieved in 1992. Hahn Family Wine makes four single-vineyard Pinot Noirs under the name Lucienne: Lone Oak, Doctor's, Smith and Hook. The Hahn SLH range comprises a Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the estate vineyards, and the third tier is simply called Hahn, which also draws on Arroyo Seco fruit and includes Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a GSM blend. The group also owns the Boneshaker brand and the Smith & Hook label which produces two Cabernet Sauvignon wines: a Central Coast release and the Paso Robles West Side cuvée.
