Badenhorst Family Wines is a small wine producer in the Swartland region of South Africa. It is known for its premium blended wines: the full-bodied, complex white wine is made up of Chenin Blanc with a wide range of other grape varieties, and the supple, mineral-laden red wine is a Southern Rhone blend. Former Rustenberg winemaker Adi Badenhorst and his cousin Hein bought the Kalmoesfontein farm in Swartland in 2008. The farm boasts 28 hectares (69 acres) of mostly old bush vines, planted in the 1950s and 60s on granite soils. Chenin Blanc, Cinsaut and Grenache make up the majority of the vineyard, and other varieties are brought in from other sites in the area. The Badenhorst winery uses traditional winemaking methods. Whites are generally whole bunch-pressed before being run to their fermentation vessel. All fruit is fermented in old oak casks, concrete vats or open wooden vats, depending on color and variety. The red wines will then undergo long post-ferment macerations, before pressing and aging in casks or 4000 litre foudres. As well as the A.A. Badenhorst red and white blends, the winery makes a small range of other labels. The Secateurs range is Badenhorst's entry-level range, comprising a red, a white and a rosé in some vintages. Producer Information A census done in 1692, shows that Nicolaas Cleef had been settled on a farm known as de Groote Zalze, just outside Stellenbosch on the banks of the Blaauwklippen river since 1683. Cleef was born in Grosszalze, Germany and married Barbara Lefevre, a Huguenot refugee of Fleurbaix, Belgium in 1684. By 1692, they had a family with a daughter and a son and had planted 7 000 vines on de Groote Zalze. In 1695, Simon van der Stel granted Cleef ownership (freehold title) of the 57 morgen of land that he had cleared and cultivated for 12 years. Today, 18 morgen of this grant is within the boundaries of the subdivided section known as Kleine Zalze, adjoining another section taken from a subsequent (1818) grant to de Groote Zalze’s owners. Nicolaas Cleef died in 1708 and his widow Barbara and their children Anna Catherina and Jochem, continued farming. Anna Catherina married Hans Jacob Conterman, whose family name was Grundermann (until his arrival in the Cape in 1796). Conterman, arrived at the Cape as a soldier but was soon freed from his obligations and registered as a burger. More recently, Kobus Basson and his family acquired the property in 1996 and proceeded to renovate the cellar and replant the vineyards to build the modern-day Kleine Zalze. In September 2022 ownership passed to AdVini, a world renowned French wine company, starting a new chapter for Kleine Zalze Wines. In 1713, Anna Catherina and Hans (also known as Jan) inherited de Groote Zalze. Anna Catherina died in 1720 and Hans remarried and sold de Groote Zalze in 1722 to Lieutenant D C Nyseh. Though Nyseh owned de Groote Zalze until 1758, nothing more is known of him. In 1758, de Groote Zalze was sold to Johannes Colyn, who in turn sold it to Wilhelmus Krige in 1762. In 1809, Krige sold de Groote Zalze to Andries Francois du Toit, great-grandson of Francois du Toit, Huguenot refugee. It is one of the country's leading producers of Chenin Blanc, although the company makes a wide array of red and white wines from other top South African varieties like Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon. Ken Forrester's wines are considered by many to be of very good value. The property was originally known as Zandberg, and the first vineyards were planted there in 1694 by Frederick Boot, a man infamous for fathering eight children out of wedlock and being banished to Mauritius as a consequence. The Scholtz family farmed the property for well over a century, before falling on hard times during apartheid. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2015 The Stone Terraces Vintage Port is a field blend, heavy on the Touriga Nacional, although not so listed, from two vineyards with stone terraces at Graham's Quinta dos Malvedos. It comes in with 106 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is gorgeous, with the potential for significant further development. Tight and focused, it is also refined, elegant and very sophisticated. It shows enough backbone to age well, although you might be able to approach this young Porto earlier than indicated. That said, it will certainly need some bottle age to gain complexity. Laced at the moment with primary fruit, raspberries mingling with plums, it is lifted, aromatic and delicious, lingering beautifully on the finish. Its purity of fruit makes it very appealing and sometimes stunning. Its finesse is exceptional, too. It could, perhaps, use a bit more concentration, but it is firing on all burners elsewhere. It is one of the 2015s that, I suspect, people will just love to drink even if it never quite improves to the point of sensational. Here's hoping it fleshes out a bit, comes together and merits an uptick in time. This has been released. There were just 4,800 bottles produced. James Suckling: This is a single vineyard port from the farm of Quinta do Malvedos. Smells like ink with a dark and earth aroma. Spicy. Dried flowers. Full and rich with a slightly drier edge to this. Nice finish with dusty tannins. A beauty already. 400 cases made. This really grows on you. Long finish. Drink in 2023. Producer Information Graham's is a prominent Port house in the Douro Valley of northern Portugal. The company begun as a textile company in the early 1800s by brothers William and John Graham in Glasgow, who received a barrel of Port as payment for a debt. The business grew from there, and today, Graham's is owned by the Symington family who own several other port houses, including Dow's and Warre's. The house makes a range of Port styles, including the classic tawny, ruby and white expressions, as well as many declared vintages and single-quinta bottlings. The Quinta dos Malvedos vineyard provides many of the grapes for Graham's vintage ports, and is considered one of the company's finest holdings, acquired in 1890. It is planted predominantly to Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional, both of which thrive in the sunny, dry terroir. Producer Information Mer Soleil is a California wine estate that was established in 1988 in the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA in Monterey County by the Wagner family of Caymus fame. It is best known for its pair of wines made from Chardonnay, though also makes Pinot Noir. The Reserve Chardonnay is fermented and aged in French oak barrels for around 11 months with the lees stirred by hand to achieve a creamy texture, To maintain balancing acidity, only a small quantity of the wine is subjected to malolactic fermentation. The Silver Chardonnay sees no oak, being fermented and aged in both stainless steel and small concrete tanks imported from France. The latter are unlined to allow a small degree of air permeability.
