Producer Information King Estate Winery is an Oregon winery in the Willamette Valley best known for its Pinot Gris. Its entire catalogue of wine is fairly large and includes other popular state varieties such as Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The estate was established in 1991, after Ed King Jr and his son Ed King III had bought a 418 hectare (1033 acre) cattle farm. They planted the property with 450 hectares (1112 acres) of vines and have farmed it strictly using organic practices since. In the mid 2000s, it was one of the largest single-block organic vineyards in the world. Most fruit for King Estate's wines come from this vineyard and the surrounding Willamette Valley, but it sources fruit from the Columbia Valley and the greater Oregon area as well. King Estate was one of the early promoters of Pinot Gris in Oregon, where it has since become the second-most planted variety behind Pinot Noir. Almost two thirds of the estate vineyards are planted to the variety, with the next significant grape being Pinot Noir. The winery produces around 350,000 cases of wine a year.

Extremely integrated and resolved on the palate where it spreads and melts. Producer Information EnRoute was established in the Russian River Valley in 2007 by the partners of Napa Valley’s Far Niente winery. Devoted to producing Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, EnRoute introduced its first wine, “Les Pommiers,” in May 2009. Les Pommiers is named for the apple orchards that once flourished in the region, and reflects a blend of vineyards primarily from Green Valley and the upper Middle Reach area of the Russian River Valley AVA. The name, EnRoute, is a nod to the journey the partners—including Beth Nickel, Erik Nickel, Jeremy Nickel, Dirk Hampson and Larry Maguire—have taken on their way to producing Pinot Noir, which began in the 1980s in Burgundy. While Far Niente’s vision is exclusively focused on Napa Valley Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, the partners still enjoyed traveling and tasting the great Pinot Noirs of the world. Eventually, sister winery Nickel & Nickel’s single-vineyard program provided the opportunity to venture into the Russian River Valley. After a few years of producing wines from Russian River, the partners decided to make a serious commitment to the region, acquired two remarkable vineyards and established EnRoute, devoted to Russian River Valley Pinot Noir.

Producer: Golan Heights Winery Vintage: 2018 Size: 750ml ABV: 14.5% Varietal: Pinot Noir Country/Region: Israel, Galilee The wine is dark red in color. In the aromatic bouquet of wine contains tones of ripe cherry, blackberry, pomegranate, flowers and spices. Producer Information Golan Heights Winery is an Israeli wine producer located in the Katzrin settlement in Galilee. It has an extensive portfolio of wines, the most important of which is Yarden, produced from selected grapes from the best vineyards. White and red wines are also made under the Gamla, Gilgal and Hermon labels, with three everyday reds released as Sion and Golan. The winery is a co-operative, and 15 member growers own 28 different vineyards in numerous locations covering a total of 600 hectares (1500 acres). These are further divided into 400 blocks, which are farmed and vinified separately. Wide variations in altitude, topography, climate and soil give a considerable range of blending options from the different parcels. Most of the grape varieties planted are classic French cultivars like Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, along with Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Cao. All of Golan Height's wines are kosher. The first vintage was harvested in 1983, seven years after the first grapes were planted in the Golan Heights. The company is owned by a collection of four kibbutzim and four moshavim, and is also the parent of Gilgal Mountain Winery in Galilee. The Golan Heights remain internationally recognized as a Syrian territory, though they have been occupied by Israel since the 1967 Six-Day War. There have, therefore, been several disputes with export markets over the inclusion of "Made in Israel" statements in promotional material, most famously with Sweden's state-owned monopoly Systembolaget. Golan Heights Winery exports to more than 30 countries and has won numerous international awards for its wines; the 2004 Yarden Cabernet Sauvignon was the first Israeli wine to make the Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines list and, in 2012, it was named New World Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast Magazine.

The vineyards are often small and low-yielding, and the wines are only available on allocation There may be less than 100 cases each of the Hartford Court Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and the Old Vine Zinfandels are similarly scarce. In addition to the single vineyard wines a Russian River Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Zinfandel are made each year. Volumes are sufficient for these wines to turn up on top restaurant lists.

This dry, vibrant wine is biodynamically farmed on Scribe's home estate and is among America's best pink wines made from Pinot Noir every year. Producer Information Scribe Winery in Sonoma, California, produces vibrant, terroir-driven wines. The winery – founded in 2007 on a property that pioneered pre-prohibition Sonoma Valley winemaking – is managed by fourth-generation California farmers and brothers, Andrew and Adam Mariani. Andrew and Adam believe that the best wines are a result of a healthy relationship between man and nature, and that a vineyard managed in harmony with the greater ecosystem results in more site-specific wines that represent a sense of time and place. When vinified with non-interventionist methods, the result is a distinct wine that faithfully reflects what the vineyard naturally expresses. The vineyard they purchased is a storied pre-Prohibition site (that had reverted to a derelict turkey farm) nestled amongst some age-old California names like Buena Vista and Gundlach-Bundschu, on the Sonoma-side of Carneros. Andrew and Adam immediately planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, understanding the natural affinity for those grapes to the area, but they embraced varieties historically connected to the original German-born, Champagne-producing vignerons that had planted St. Laurent, Riesling, and Sylvaner in the 1850’s. Scribe manages to be new school without forsaking the old, and they don’t just farm their vineyards organically but embrace a philosophy they call “Forever Wild Farming” that considers how the vineyard and the winery (and its kitchen gardens) can coexist with, and within, the ecosystem as a whole.

The finish is clean and refined. Mineral notes in the palate lead the way to flavors of melon and peach. It’s an elegant and delicate wine. Producer Information The Francis Ford Coppola Winery is a Californian wine producer in Sonoma County. Founded by the eponymous filmmaker, famous for directing The Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now, the business was sold in 2021 to Delicato Family Wines. The winery had the highest production among the varied Coppola wine estates and produced the group's value brands. It was created decades later to separate the different brands the Neibaum-Coppola estate had cultivated. Wanting to distinguish the Rubicon label (which at the time accounted for only around 5000 of the estate's 268,000 annual case production), Neibaum-Coppola changed its name to Rubicon (now Inglenook Winery after another name change in 2011) and moved the production of its other wines, including the Diamond Collection, to Sonoma, establishing the Francis Ford Coppola Winery. The Francis Ford Coppola Winery was built as a fairly lavish attraction among Sonoma wineries. It has multiple tasting bars, tours, two restaurants, a swimming pool, a movie gallery, performing arts pavilion and a park with bocce courts. Much of the film memorabilia which had drawn large crowds to the Inglenook estate has been relocated to the Francis Ford Coppola Winery to maintain the focus of Inglenook as a fine wine producer. Just north of the Francis Ford Coppola Winery is the Francis Ford Coppola Winery Too! of which was established to showcase the entire portfolio of wines from the Coppola Family holdings. This establishment is the home of the Virginia Dare label. In the 2021 sale, Coppola retained Inglenook winery and vineyard (where Francis and his wife Eleanor live) and Domaine de Broglie in Oregon.

Velvety, silky tannins and vibrant acidity carry voluptuous flavors of raspberry tart, mocha, cola, licorice, and sandalwood that go on and on into a long, spicy finish. Producer Information One score and three years ago, I met my wife, who was living abroad in France. She was not yet my wife nor did she know she would be. While at a soiree in the French Alps, and with matters seemingly in hand, I sauntered off to the bar to work my French for a refill of Malibu and fruit juice. It was then that I noticed a Frenchman awfully close to my gal, making her eyes flutter and her beret tipsy. He must have the greatest one liner in the world, I thought as I yelled “FEU!” (‘fire’ in French). Once the room cleared out, I ask my sweetheart what he could possibly have said to make her fall into his arms. Her answer? "He held my hands and asked if I believed in the Coup de Foudre." After years of thinking he’d called her a cute cauliflower, I consulted a French friend who defined Coup de Foudre as a lightning strike, something unforgettable-"love at first sight"-be it food, wine or someone incredible. For the past 30 years, we have had the great fortune and honor to work with wine, savor it, and witness its impact on consumers as they navigate the wonders of wine and the sheer pleasure that it brings. We have watched many people commemorate special times in their lives with wine. A few years ago, we embarked on our path to create a unique wine with elements worthy of a Coup de Foudre. Now that you know our story, we hope that you will share Coup de Foudre wines with the special people in your lives—and that Coup de Foudre will be part of the stories you are inspired to share with us in the future.

Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2020 Pinot Noir Estate has a medium ruby color and scents of dried red cherries and pomegranate with accents of tobacco leaves and prosciutto. The medium-bodied palate is firm and grainy, finishing earthy. Wine & Spirits: A young wine with youthful dark fruit and tension, and a strident expression of whole-cluster spice, this is exceedingly savory in its aromatics, with scents of olive and olive leaf, smoldering tobacco and gorse. Producer Information There is no place on earth quite like the Sta. Rita Hills. The highly unusual east-west (or transverse) mountain range, close proximity to the cold Pacific, consistent coastal fog, and steady afternoon breezes together create ideal conditions for growing cold-climate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Ron Melville and his sons recognized that these exceptional conditions, combined with their commitment to “winegrowing,” would result in wines of remarkable quality. Melville Vineyards was established in 1996 in the heart of the Sta. Rita Hills and has since become one of the most highly-regarded estates in California. With the guidance of Head Winegrower, Chad Melville, Melville’s full-time vineyard crew nurtures their 120 estate acres organically, paying close attention to the health of both the vines and the soil. Farming aggressively, yet carefully, and with the utmost respect to Mother Nature, helps encourage the vines to produce small amounts of intensely flavored/concentrated fruit. At the time of harvest, they consider the wines to already be made, and strive to not interfere with their natural path in the cellar. To this effect, they maintain a minimalist approach by aging their wines only in neutral French oak and stainless steel and utilize whole cluster fermentation to contribute to the depth, structure, and complexity of their wines.

Producer Information Founded in 1987, Argyle quickly stood out as a study in contrasts – honoring the deep traditions of wine and embracing innovation and experimentation; proud to be Oregonian and pulling knowledge and support from winemakers around the world. When common knowledge said a winery could produce either great still wine or great Sparkling wine, Argyle answered, “Why not both?” We’ve answered that question with wines that have long astonished tasters with range, complexity, and quality. Talk about winemaking and you’ll hear a lot about terroir, the all-important connection between the land and the wine. Here, in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, we believe this concept goes even deeper. Here there’s a community of winemaking, a shared culture that is incredibly special and unique. Our neighbors are our friends and collaborators. We learn from each other. We support each other. We challenge each other. Because that’s what gets us closer to the goal. And the goal is, always, to make great wine. When Rollin Soles, the founder of Argyle, visited the Willamette Valley in 1979, this spirit was a big part of what he fell in love with. Those were early, pioneering days, and the ethos of Oregon winemaking was already developing. There was a sense of work to be done and discoveries to be made and Rollin instantly knew he belonged here. It took him nearly another ten years — working and learning in Europe and Australia — before he came back home to Oregon. Today, Argyle remains the essential Oregon winery by continuing to embrace the contradictions that make us strong. We are deeply established here, yet young at heart, led by stand-out winemaker Nate Klostermann, who grew up here at Argyle, and innovative viticulturist Geoff Hall. Together they have continued Rollin’s pioneering mission to explore and expand the possibilities of modern winemaking. Along the way, they’ve produced the most highly-rated wines in Argyle’s long history.

In the winery, each plot is kept seperate throughout the fermentation process with higher portions of whole clusters kept when the incidence of millerandage is high. The temperature of the cellar initiates fermentation with wild yeasts from the vineyard and winery. The wines are bottled unfiltered and unfined with minimal additions of sulfur dioxide. Jeb Dunnuck: The 2018 Pinot Noir Land's Edge Vineyards is another Sonoma Coast release from this great producer. Medium ruby/purple-hued, with an exotic bouquet of black cherries, blueberries, candied violets, and flowery incense, it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, a juicy, racy mouthfeel, supple tannins, and a great finish. It will benefit from a year in bottle and drink brilliantly through at least 2030. Producer Information Hartford Family Winery was founded in 1993 as a result of Don and Jennifer Hartford's appreciation for the wines, the people, and the unique vineyards near their Russian River Valley home. Located in the Sonoma County town of Forestville, the winery is about 15 miles from the cool Pacific Coast. Making delicious wines of high personality is directly related to the difficult locations of the Hartford family's vineyard sources, the limited production of their bottlings and the varietals they use. "Character through adversity" is an expression that the Hartford family believes to apply to both people and grapevines, and they feel that surviving adversity builds character, and personality, in both. The Hartford Family makes wines under two marks, one of which is Hartford Court. Hartford Court bottlings are small lots of...

Producer Information Peter Michael Winery is a highly regarded wine producer located in northern California, on the border of Napa and Sonoma counties in the Knights Valley AVA. The winery produces a number of single-vineyard wines including Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blends, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc – Semillon blends. The winery was established by Peter Michael and his wife Margaret in 1982. Michael's background was in technology and had founded the digital picture company Quantel in the UK in the early 1970s. He arrived in California in the early days of the Silicon Valley tech boom and soon invested in a winery. The winery released its first vintage in 1987 and has since enjoyed a high level of critical acclaim. Three of Michael's wines have ranked in the top 10 of Wine Spectator's Top 100, and since the 1995 vintage, 14 wines have been rated 98 points or higher by US wine critic Robert Parker. Peter Michael's property in the Knights Valley AVA is at a much higher altitude than many others in the area, with vineyards reaching as high as 2000 feet (610m) above sea level. The result is cooler growing temperatures, which allows for wines in the more restrained old world style. In 2006, Peter Michael began planting a vineyard in Fort Ross-Seaview AVA in Sonoma County. In 2009 added an Oakville AVA vineyard in Napa Valley. Peter Michael Winery remains a family-owned estate that is now run by Peter's son Paul and wife Emily (the inspiration for the Belle-Fille Chardonnay label and vineyard). A bright entry gives way to a creamy, rich texture with extended notes of caramel and Macintosh apple, and a long, clean, juicy finish. Producer Information Chalk Hill Vineyards & Winery is located in the Chalk Hill AVA in Sonoma, in the northeast corner of the Russian River Valley. It is best known for its Bordeaux blend red wines, and its white wines made from Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. The winery was founded in 1972, when Fred Furth, a flamboyant, cigar-smoking attorney, spotted the land's potential from a passing plane. The vineyard covers 113 hectares (280 acres) of the entire estate, and is shaped like an amphitheater. The lower, cooler sites are suited to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, while the warmer south-facing slopes are better for red Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. All of Chalk Hill's wines are bottled and produced on site. Chardonnay makes up a major part of the portfolio, sourced from distinct blocks on the estate, and aged for a significant period in new French oak. Chalk Hill also makes an estate Chardonnay with a less-expensive aging regime. Beyond Chardonnay, the portfolio includes a range of other white wines including those made from Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Viognier. In addition to the white wines, Chalk Hill makes a range of varietal and blended red wines from Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The business was acquired by billionaire and owner of numerous estates in the US and New Zealand, Bill Foley in 2010. Furth died in 2018 at the age of 84.

Producer: Robert Mondavi Winery Vintage: 2018 Size: 750ml ABV: 14.5% Varietal: Pinot Noir Country/Region: United States, Oakville This wine shows terrific balance and harmony. Quite delicate and smooth texture on the long finish. Producer Information Robert Mondavi Winery is one of the most prominent wine producers in Napa Valley. Founded in 1966 by Robert Mondavi himself, the company is widely credited with kickstarting the modern era of California's wine industry. Robert Mondavi Winery makes a range of wines, from the value-driven Woodbridge and Private Selection labels to collectable, age-worthy wines from Napa Valley's famed To Kalon vineyard. Mondavi founded the winery after a less-than-amicable split from his family's business, Charles Krug. His stated aim was to swap quantity for quality, believing that good wine could be made in the valley. To Kalon, originally planted in 1868, became the epicentre of his estate, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc (often labeled Fumé Blanc in California) providing the backbone of the Mondavi range. Over the years, Mondavi has employed some of Napa's most famous winemakers, including Mike Grgich (of Chateau Montelena), Warren Winiarski (of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars) and Zelma Long (of Simi Winery). Today the winery makes wines from a host of grape varieties, including Merlot, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir and Moscato. The range spans vineyards throughout Napa, including sites in Carneros and Stags Leap. Mondavi's Private Selection wines fall under the sizeable Central Coast appellation, and Woodbridge wines are labelled under the generic California appellation, although many of the vineyards are located in Lodi. One of Mondavi's most high-profile contributions to Californian winemaking came via a collaboration with Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild. Opus One, the resulting wine, first appeared in 1980, and has gone on to become one of California's more iconic Cabernet Sauvignon wines, netting both high praise and high prices. Although Opus One is now a separate entity to Robert Mondavi Winery, it still bears Mondavi's silhouette on the bottle. The Robert Mondavi brand was sold to beverage giant Constellation Brands in 2004, and Mondavi went on to found Continuum Estate with his son Tim and daughter Marcia. Mondavi passed away in 2008 at the age of 94.
