Producer Information Cris and JoAnn Cherry moved to Paso Robles in 1996 to open a restaurant, partake in the burgeoning wine scene and raise their children in the country. In 2001, they purchased their first grapes to make wine for their restaurant. And so began Villa Creek Cellars, their best expression of west Paso Robles' Rhone grape varieties. Today, they farm their own certified biodynamic and certified organic vineyard, the MAHA Estate in the hills west of Paso Robles. They continue to purchase grapes from the region's most esteemed vineyards and strive to create exciting wines that reflect the land from which they originated. The MAHA Estate is 8 miles west of Paso Robles. Extreme topography of south and west facing slopes that climb to 1800 feet continue to captivate Cris and JoAnn with the dynamic views of the coastal mountain range. The winery was erected in 2003 to house the production of roughly 3000 cases of wine each year. Monterey shale and siliceous shale provide an ideal foundation for the Rhone grape varieties planted in 2012 and 2013. Sustaining the vibrancy and the health of the land by farming the grapes under organic and biodynamic principles will, in turn, make vibrant wines. The soil is abundant in micro organisms and is the perfect host to the vines, the family and their flock of 30 Dorper sheep that graze the vineyard in the winter and spring. The energy of this site is palpable.

Producer: Turley Wine Cellars Vintage: 2019 Size: 750ml Varietal: Zinfandel Country/Region: United States, Napa Valley The 2019 Zinfandel Turley Estate has a medium ruby color. The nose begins with graphite, tar and aniseed and fleshes out to bright black and red berries with wafts of potpourri. The medium-bodied palate is surprisingly intense, offering up loads of berry and peachy fruits. It has a gently grainy and fresh frame, and it finishes long and floral. Producer Information Turley Wine Cellars was established in the Napa Valley in 1993 by Larry Turley. Turley, a founder of Frog's Leap Winery in Rutherford, wanted a smaller, more intimate production size, and wanted to work with old vines. Turley sold his shares in Frog's Leap to begin his own winery with the help of his sister Helen Turley, a notable Californian wine consultant and winemaker. Helen acted as winemaker until 1995 when she went back to consulting and Ehren Jordan assumed the winemaking role. Jordan left Turley in 2013 when the position was taken by his protégé, Tegan Passalacqua. The estate makes around 30 wines from 35 different vineyards, split roughly in half between estate-owned land and long-term leases. The focus has been on reviving old vines. Some of the vineyards are more than 100 years old, including the Hayne and Ueberroth vineyards, planted in 1902 and 1885 respectively. The predominant grape here is Zinfandel, but Petite Sirah features heavily as well. Turley's style embraces the full-bodied, robust, and fruit-dominant potential of Zinfandel when grown in Californian heat. The approach has been to bring the fruit to full physiological ripeness which can lead to high alcohol levels – in hot years some of Turley's wines have been as high as 18 percent alcohol. Turley now has two wineries – one in Templeton in Paso Robles, and the other in St Helena in Napa. A cult following and moderate production volumes – around 16,000 cases a year – means that the majority of the wines are sold through mailing list with a two-year wait list. The company also has two cellar doors – one in Paso Robles, south of San Francisco, and one in Amador County, east of the city.

Producer: Forge Cellars Vintage: 2019 Size: 750ml ABV: 12% Varietal: Riesling Country/Region: United States, Seneca Lake A bright, high-pitched version, with honeysuckle and chamomile notes leading the way for white peach and lemon curd details. A subtle talc thread adds tension to the finish. Producer Information Founded in 2011 Forge Cellars has quickly become the benchmark producer for bone-dry Riesling in the Finger Lakes and in the United States. The unique cool climate region of the Finger Lakes has help to define Forge’s dry Riesling as a wine that combines cool climate aro-matics of peach and apricot with balanced texture and refreshing acidity all while maintaining low levels of alcohol. Their Dry Riesling Classique garnered the #31 spot on Wine Spectator’s “Top 100” lists in 2017 and 2020 for the 2015 and 2018 vintages, respectively. Partners, Louis Barruol (Château de Saint Cosme in Gigondas, France), and Richard Rainey have been working together since their first vintage in 2011 to produce hand-crafted, terroir-driven, bone dry Riesling, cool-climate Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Franc. Focusing on the east side of Seneca Lake—the deepest of the Finger Lakes at 620ft—the duo works with several premier sites with considerable slope and an abundance of different clones and soils. They have long-term relationships with growers throughout the region, and work closely with them to cultivate healthy grapes and develop viticultural programs that work well for each individual site. Bellows is the estate vineyard at Forge Cellars, which is farmed biointesively and dense-ly-planted to Riesling and Pinot Noir. Each vintage, a variety of lieux-dits (single vineyard bottlings) are produced in limited quanti-ties. These wines reflect the substance and diversity of southeast Seneca Lake, and pay homage to Forge Cellars’ exploration of the region. Of most importance in the winery’s lineup is their Classique, which represents their work on a larger scale. All of their lieux-dits, each vinified separately, are the basis of this wine and represent the DNA of Classique. In the words of Lou-is Barruol, “This wine is like you and me—we are individually unique, but we represent all of our ancestors at the same time. We carry their traits.”

The winery’s first vintage was in 1998 and it reached the market at the end of 2000. The demanding standards we impose on all the winery’s activity and processes are: rigour, quality and the importance of the countryside. We use controlled microproduction of the vineyards and “trossos” (plots of land used), so that quality always outweighs quantity. Likewise, we’ve set a limit on expansion of production and growth, so we never lose the personalised and exhaustive control over each one of the processes. All this, and the unique character of the Priorat region, mean we can offer wines that we believe are fascinating and exclusive.

Medium-bodied. Wet stone and matchstick on the palate, with a silky texture and pleasant weight. Producer Information Stag's Leap Wine Cellars was founded in the early 1970s by the Winiarski family on land that would eventually become part of the Stags Leap AVA in Napa Valley, California. The Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend had its first vintage in 1972, and rose to rapid fame in 1976 when it beat out the likes of Mouton-Rothschild and Haut-Brion at the blind Judgement of Paris tasting that is widely credited with putting California's wine industry on the map. The estate consists of two adjoining vineyards in Napa: the Stag's Leap Vineyard (SLV) and the Fay vineyard in the Stags Leap AVA planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, as well as a small portion of Petit Verdot. The SLV vineyard has volcanic soils and contributes spice and concentration to its grapes, whereas the Fay vineyard is predominantly alluvial and gives a more aromatic character. Stag's Leap's top wine is the Cask 23, a varietal Cabernet Sauvignon from the Stag's Leap Vineyard. This wine came about as the 1974 Stag's Leap Cabernet was being blended from different barrels. The winemaker came across a barrel so exceptional that it could not be placed into the blend. Instead, he bottled it on its own and named it Cask 23. Stag's Leap's other premium wines include the single vineyard expressions of SLV and Fay. Stag's Leap Wine Cellar is not to be confused with the nearby producer, Stags' Leap Winery. The two came to legal blows in the 1980s over the Stag's Leap title, but an agreement was reached over the careful placement of the apostrophe. Later, they would team up to fight the proposed Stags Leap District AVA, although that was also settled with the complete omission of the apostrophe from the...

Producer: Realm Cellars Ratings: WA 97 JD 98 Vintage: 2015 Size: 1.5L ABV: 14.6% Varietal: Bordeaux Red Blends Country/Region: United States, California Amazing aromas of blackcurrants and black licorice with blue fruit. Hints of burnt orange peel. Full-bodied, very tight and refined on the palate. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Blended of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2015 The Bard offers up a very deep garnet-purple color and highly perfumed scents of violets, dried Provence herbs, lavender and tapenade over a core of cassis and blackberry preserves. Full-bodied and loaded with perfumed black fruit layers, it has a solid frame of rounded, plush-textured tannins and a provocatively earthy finish. Jeb Dunnuck: Coming from a scorching hot vintage, it stays pure and beautifully balanced, with notable freshness in its darker fruits, tobacco, vanilla bean, violets, and spice-driven aromas and flavors. With beautiful ripeness, full-bodied richness, and incredible opulence on the palate as well as silky tannins, this singular Cabernet is going to evolve beautifully on its concentration, depth of fruit, and balance. Producer: Colgin Cellars Vintage: 2007 Size: 750ml ABV: 15.1% Varietal: Bordeaux Blend Red Country/Region: United States, California Beautifully structured, concentrated with perfectly ripe, sweet, black and blue fruits, soft tannins, opulent textures and length. This is drinking great today. There is not much to be gained by waiting, so if you have a bottle, pop a cork when you're in the mood. Producer Information Colgin Cellars is one of California's so-called "cult" wineries, founded by Ann Colgin in 1992. She produced some of her early vintages from vineyards at the foot of the Howell Mountains in Napa Valley, before purchasing land on the Tychson Hill and hiring famed viticulturalist David Abreu to plant her vineyards. Today Colgin produces wines that are mostly based on Cabernet Sauvignon and regularly score 100-point ratings from Robert Parker. Colgin produces wines from three different areas of St Helena: Tychson Hill Vineyard, Cariad Vineyards and the IX estate vineyards, the latter of which the borders the Colgin winery. The Tychson Hill Vineyards were originally planted in 1881 by the first female vintner in Napa, Josephine Tychson. The original vines were pulled during Prohibition and, in 1997, Colgin replanted the vineyards with a mixture of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The vines are grown on volcanic soils on the slopes of the Tychson Hill. The Tychson Hill Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon vintages 2002, 2012 and most recently the 2013 have perfect scores from Robert Parker, with the critic comparing the wines to a hypothetical blend of the finest Pauillac and Napa Valley wines. The Cariad Vineyards encompass three main plots – the Madrona Ranch, Howell Mountain and Thorevilos – and are owned and managed by David Abreu. The Cariad Red Wine is produced from a blend of grapes from these three vineyards, usually Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The IX estate vineyards, also known as the number nine estate, form an eight-hectare (20-acre) plot on a broad slope of the St Helena hill. The vines are spread over both low- and high-altitude plots atop of rich volcanic soils. The IX estate red wine comes from these vines and is a Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The 2002, 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2013 vintages have been awarded 100-point...

Producer: Turley Wine Cellars Ratings: VN 94 Vintage: 2021 Size: 750ml ABV: 14.9% Varietal: Zinfandel Country/Region: United States, Lodi Marking the 10th vintage of this wine, bright ripe red fruits, raspberry preserves, and white pepper burst forth from the glass. Precise on the palate like a perfectly seasoned piece of meat, with more red berries and a sumptuously complex texture. Reviews: Vinous: The 2021 Zinfandel Kirschenmann Vineyard is superb. In most vintages, the Kirschenmann can be a bit light, but in 2021 it offers a beguiling mix of its typical floral qualities, but with an extra kick of depth that holds everything together so well. Bright red berry fruit, rose petal, chalk, min and white pepper are some of the many notes that grace this striking Lodi Zinfandel from Turley. A cult following and moderate production volumes – around 16,000 cases a year – means that the majority of the wines are sold through mailing list with a two-year...
