Pure nose, some vinous, brioche/buttery notes with ripe citrus, pale stonefruit and fresh almond. Producer Information Barone Pizzini is a wine producer based in Franciacorta in the Italian region of Lombardy. The estate specializes in high-quality sparkling wines, producing a range of labels and wines including Satèn, Rosé, Nature, Pas Dose and Brut Franciacorta. In 1870, brothers Enrico and Bernardino Pizzini Piomarta von Thurberg founded the Pizzini Farming Company. Nearly a century later, in 1967, Barone Pizzini became one of the first wineries to belong to the newly created Franciacorta DOC. It released its first vintage of Barone Pizzini Franciacorta in 1971. Today, the estate's vineyards stretch over a total of 47 hectares (116 acres), divided between 25 sites. The vines are on average 15-20 years old, and are planted on sites with varying exposures and soil types. Barone Pizzini employs organic farming methods in its vineyards and was among the first Franciacorta producers to do so in 1998. Chardonnay forms the basis of much of the Barone Pizzini portfolio and is used exclusively in the production of its Satèn label. Pinot Noir is also blended with Chardonnay to make the estate's Rosé, Nature, Pas Dose and Brut Franciacorta wines, as well as the flagship non-vintage Animante label. Animante is made from a blend of predominantly Chardonnay, with Pinot Nero and Pinot Blanc. The grapes are harvested from the Provaglio d'Iseo, Passirano, Corte Franca and Adro vineyards, lightly pressed and then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Once fermentation is complete, the wine ages in stainless steel tanks for six months and spends a further 20-30 months bottle aging in contact with its lees. In addition to its sparkling wines, Barone Pizzini makes a range of still red and white Curtefranca wines, as well as a single Sebino IGT wine. In 2002, Barone Pizzini founded Pievalta in the Marche (producing the flagship Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi wines) and also owns Poderi di Ghiaccioforte in Scansano, in the heart of Tuscany's coastal Maremma region....

Producer Information Barone Ricasoli is the largest and oldest wine estate in the Chianti Classico region and is one of the four oldest businesses in the world. Based at the famous Castello di Brolio in Gaiole, it is known for its top-quality Sangiovese-dominant wines, and has a reputation for fair pricing. The estate has around 235 hectares (580 acres) of vineyards in its grounds, which surround the Castello di Brolio, stretching across the communes of Gaiole and Castelnuovo Berardenga. The cellars are situated at the foot of the castle and combine the traditional with the new in terms of winemaking. Ricasoli's wines are vinified in small, gravity-fed steel vats, which allow vineyard lots to be kept separate. Ricasoli's flagship wine is the Gran Selezione Chianti Classico, sourced from various plots across the estate. The blend combines 80 percent Sangiovese, with 10 percent each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Other important wines in the portfolio include the Coledilà Chianti Classico, a varietal Sangiovese from a single vineyard, and Casalferro, a single-vineyard Merlot. All three wines are matured in oak for 18 months. There is a range of other red wines, falling under both the Chianti Classico appellation and the IGT Toscana designation, where there is a little more freedom for blending. A rosé and two white wines made from Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc complete the range of dry wines, and finally, Ricasoli makes a Vin Santo and a passito wine. Documentary evidence for the Ricasoli family dates back to the 7th Century and the time of Charlemagne, and Brolio Castle has been in the family's ownership since 1141. Bettino Ricasoli, the Iron Baron, was the second prime minister of the united Italy. In the 1960s, the family sold the Castello di Brolio wine name to Seagram along with production, although they continued to manage the land. Since 1993, all aspects of the business have been back under family control and output has been much reduced in favor of quality.

Producer Information The history of Italy cannot be told without including the prominent contributions of the Ricasoli family, who have produced wine since 1141. Ricasoli is documented as the oldest winery in Italy and the fourth oldest family business in the world. A beautiful illustration of the family tree in 1584 is one of the first images of the Chianti area and the family archives include export receipts dating back to the late 1600s. However, perhaps the most famous historical contribution came from Baron Bettino Ricasoli, who was not only twice the prime minister of Italy, but after 30 years of experimentation and documentation, developed the original formula for the Chianti wine that became the standard for the region.Baron Francesco Ricasoli has been at the helm of the winery since 1993 and with the deepest respect for his renowned ancestors, he has guided the estate in innovation and sustainable vineyard practices. The ongoing study of soil types and the clonal selection of the Brolio Sangiovese are among his greatest passions and he has been responsible for total renovation and re-mapping of the vineyards. Today, the wines are a reflection of the family’s nine hundred year dedication to quality winemaking and innovation at the Brolio estate.

Full body. Structured. Give it two or three years to come together.

The mouthfeel is lush and concentrated but is tempered by lovely freshness.

Reviews: Wine Advocate: Tasted from vat, the 2013 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Brolio is shaping up to be a stunning wine, and may be one of the best expressions this single vineyard has produced so far in its young incarnation as a Gran Selezione wine. Previous vintages see some small additions of international grapes, but this vintage was made without Merlot in the blend. The wine is brimming with bright fruit intensity and enormous generosity. The finish is luscious, rich and long-lasting. It promises to flesh out further with more bottle aging. James Suckling: A bright and refined red with delicate chocolate, plum and raspberry character. Producer: Barone Ricasoli Ratings: WA 97 JS 95 Vintage: 2019 Size: 750ml ABV: 14% Varietal: Sangiovese Country/Region: Italy, Tuscany Distinctly savory, this red delivers grassy, thyme and menthol aromas and flavors allied to notes of cherry, strawberry and loam. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The Barone Ricasoli 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Colledilà exudes an elegant fruit profile, but the wine is not without significant intensity and concentration too. With Sangiovese from clayey limestone soils rich in calcium carbonate and poor in organic matter, this wine also boasts that beautiful minerality that we saw in the others. Delicate berry fruit cedes to crushed oyster shell, dark spice and campfire ash. To the palate, the wine is high, firm and long. James Suckling: Lots of fresh fruit here, with orange-peel and crushed-berry character. Some crushed stone as well. Full-bodied with integrated tannins that spread across the palate and melt in nicely, making is almost seamless. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Barone Ricasoli has successful brought out the individual character of each of its Gran Selezione wines. This sample sees fruit from sandy and silty soils in the Val d'Arbia at lower elevations (ranging from 280 to 300 meters above sea level). The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Brolio CeniPrimo is a wine of structure and concentration with generous layers of dark fruit, spice, earth and candied cherry. CeniPrimo focuses on dark fruit and texture. James Suckling: This has an intensely perfumed nose of lavender, sandalwood, dried cherries, blueberries, creme de cassis, bay leaves, walnuts and stones. Reveals an underlying mineral element, and dusty tannins present on the finish. Reviews: Wine Advocate: This is my favorite wine among this group of new releases from Barone Ricasoli. The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Brolio Roncicone reflects soils that are rich in shells and marine fossils. These conditions deliver sharpness and focus with beautiful minerality, both salty and chalky. To the eye, this textbook Sangiovese is lean and elegant. The bouquet is finessed and layered with wild cherry, mint, blue flower and blood orange. There is an element of rustiness as well, and the mouthfeel is polished and extremely fine. The tannins melt away. Francesco Ricasoli assures me that he and his team "have learned to work the grape." I'd certainly say so. These are stunning results. James Suckling: The aromas and structure to this single vineyard Chianti Classico are something else this year. The orange-peel, meat and cherry aromas are lifted and spirited. It’s medium-bodied with firm, chewy tannins that are dusty and fine-grained. Structured and sturdy with a granite-like presence. In the 1960s, the family sold the Castello di Brolio wine name to Seagram along with production, although they continued to manage the land. The castle building and surrounding vineyards were ravaged by the Glass wildfire on September 28, 2020.The winery initially took more than a decade to complete, and was made with a focus on historically accurate methods and architecture. After finding a suitable site, owner/operator Dario Sattui (who also owns the St. Helena winery V. Sattui) began building in 1994 and the castle was finally unveiled in 2007.It has since become a major tourist attraction, and is one of the most visited wineries in Napa. These conditions give extra focus and linearity to the wine with layered aromas of crushed stone and spice. The wine is equally fruity with blackberry, wild cherry and crushed rose petal. Colledilà is a classic and lasting expression from Gaiole in Chianti. James Suckling: The purity of fruit here is stunning with blackberry, blueberry and orange-peel aromas and flavors.

Producer: Barone Ricasoli Vintage: 2020 Size: 375ml ABV: 14% Varietal: Chianti Blend Country/Region: Italy, Tuscany The wine is redolent of dried flowers and sweet red cherry fruit, with velvety tannins and bright acidity.
