It began in the late 1970s, initially as a garage project by Ed Selyem and Burt Williams in Forestville, a community in Sonoma County. In 1981 the pair – who were neighbors – officially named their project Hacienda Del Rio and established it as a legal winery. Two years later, the release of their first commercial vintage (1981) coincided with a cease-and-desist order from Hacienda Winery, leading them to change their name to Williams Selyem. It was founded in 1998 and is owned by the d'Aulan family, the former owners of the Piper-Heidsieck Champagne house. The winery is located 9 miles (15km) south of Mendoza city in a 19th Century building fitted out with modern facilities. The property holdings consists of multiple vineyards throughout the Luján de Cuyo and Valle de Uco wine regions, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Chardonnay amoungst others. Alta Vista hold strong principles in sourcing grapes from single vineyards to allow for the optimal expression of terroir in wine. It began a comparison study on single vineyard terroir in 2007.
