Well balanced flavors of jammy plum and blackberries with toasted coconut, baking spices and rich vanilla lead to a long, lush finish. Producer Information Robert Mondavi Winery is one of the most prominent wine producers in Napa Valley. Founded in 1966 by Robert Mondavi himself, the company is widely credited with kickstarting the modern era of California's wine industry. Robert Mondavi Winery makes a range of wines, from the value-driven Woodbridge and Private Selection labels to collectable, age-worthy wines from Napa Valley's famed To Kalon vineyard. Mondavi founded the winery after a less-than-amicable split from his family's business, Charles Krug. His stated aim was to swap quantity for quality, believing that good wine could be made in the valley. To Kalon, originally planted in 1868, became the epicentre of his estate, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc (often labeled Fumé Blanc in California) providing the backbone of the Mondavi range. Over the years, Mondavi has employed some of Napa's most famous winemakers, including Mike Grgich (of Chateau Montelena), Warren Winiarski (of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars) and Zelma Long (of Simi Winery). Today the winery makes wines from a host of grape varieties, including Merlot, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir and Moscato. The range spans vineyards throughout Napa, including sites in Carneros and Stags Leap. Mondavi's Private Selection wines fall under the sizeable Central Coast appellation, and Woodbridge wines are labelled under the generic California appellation, although many of the vineyards are located in Lodi. One of Mondavi's most high-profile contributions to Californian winemaking came via a collaboration with Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild. Opus One, the resulting wine, first appeared in 1980, and has gone on to become one of California's more iconic Cabernet Sauvignon wines, netting both high praise and high prices. Although Opus One is now a separate entity to Robert...

The palate is loaded with oak alongside ripe cherries and berries. It's pleasant although simple. Producer Information William Hill Estate is located in the southern part of Napa Valley, right off the region's iconic Silverado Trail. It makes a wide range of wines though Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are to the fore. The estate sits on 200 acres (80 hectares) of land in the southeast of the valley, on the Silverado Bench at the foor of Atlas Peak. Here a cooling influence from the San Pablo Bay promotes a long growing season. The rocky benchland soils have low fertility and cause the vines to struggle and produce small yields of highly concentrated fruit. They contrast with the rich sandy loams of the valley floor. Vineyard elevations and exposures vary, and some parcels of estate vines lie in more fertile lower areas. Each block is vinified separately. William Hill's flagship wine, Benchmark, is sourced from the best blocks in the estate vineyards. It is only made in small quantities – just over 200 cases a year. It is a blend based on Cabernet Sauvignon. Depending on the vintage, smaller amounts of Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot may also feature.

Layers of black fruit, cherries, spices and liquorice develop on the palate, making the wine very enjoyable. Well balanced & structured, with juicy sweet tannins, but a dry finish. Producer Information Producer The Reyneke label was created in 1998 when Johan Reyneke Jr. took over the farming activities from his mother and produced the first wines on the family farm, Uitzicht. The 40ha farm faces the historic town of Stellenbosch and overlooks the surrounding mountain ranges and the beautiful False Bay. Since inception, Johan has moved from farming conventionally to farming organically and finally to farming and producing his wines in accordance with biodynamic principles. He is currently one of only a few winemakers in SA who produce biodynamic wines and is considered somewhat of a ground- breaker in this regard. The aim for Reyneke has always been to express the uniqueness of the farm’s situation – the deep soil dotted with early stone age hand axes; the vines- some 40 years old; the crisp upland air – into the bottle. Reyneke believes that it is impossible to sense terroir if you are constantly changing it with chemicals. ”The intention here is to interfere as little as possible, to allow nature to be the real maker of the wine and to truly produce terroir specific wines of the highest quality.

Producer: Beringer Vintage: NV Size: 1.5L ABV: 13.7% Varietal: Merlot Country/Region: United States, California Medium bodied and apparently semisweet, this wine is very fruity in aroma, and simple and candied in flavor. Producer Information Beringer is California's longest continuously operating winery, located in the heart of Napa Valley. It has become one of the largest and most distributed American labels, and is known for its range of wines, from affordable table wines to fine single-vineyard cuvées and a private reserve label. Brothers Jacob and Frederick Beringer harvested their first vintage in 1876, in what has since become the St Helena AVA. In 1883, Frederick built the Rhine House as his home, a Victorian mansion, and it is now the main visitor site of the winery. Beringer's success was in part because of the federal license they obtained to make wine for religious purposes during Prohibition (1920-1933). The wine was sold to churches for sacramental purposes. After Prohibition was repealed, Beringer became the first winery to offer public tours – a significant contribution to the beginnings of modern Napa Valley tourism. Beringer was bought by the beverage manufacturer Nestlé in the early 1970s, and since then it has changed ownership numerous times. It is currently owned by Treasury Wine Estates, one of the largest North American wine suppliers, which also owns, among other labels, Penfolds, Wolf Blass and Stags' Leap. In 2015, Mark Beringer, the great-great-grandson of Jacob Beringer, became chief winemaker. As well was having wide distribution, Beringer is known for its range of quality wines. It owns land in Napa and Sonoma and all of the vineyards it owns or leases are third-party certified sustainable. It bottles numerous single-vineyard offerings, some of the most notable being Bancroft Ranch in Howell Mountain AVA, Chabot Vineyard and St. Helena Home Vineyard in St Helena AVA as well as Knights Valley Vineyard in Knights Valley AVA. Its portfolio is composed of the usual California offerings such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay, with some Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Bordeaux-style blends as well. Beringer's most lauded range is the Private Reserve label, offering wines made from Cabernet Sauvingon and a Chardonnay. The 1986 Cabernet Sauvignon was named number one in Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 1990, and the 1994 Chardonnay...

Producer: Santa Rita Vintage: NV Size: 750ml ABV: 13.5% Varietal: Merlot Country/Region: Chile, Rapel Valley Shows inviting aroma that combines ripe black fruit, enhanced by vanilla and spice notes. Tasty and concentrated, with very ripe, almost sweet tannins, resulting in a rich wine; a captivating Merlot with a good finish. Producer Information Santa Rita (also referred to as Viña Santa Rita)is one of Chile's most prominent wine producers, and is based in the Alto Jahuel area of the Maipo Valley. It has vineyards in some of the country's best winegrowing regions, including Aconcagua, the Limari Valley, Apalta, the Rapel Valley and the Casablanca Valley. Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère are Santa Rita's most important grape varieties, but wines are also made from Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Chardonnay. Santa Rita was founded in 1880 by Domingo Fernández Concha. Considerable wealth from mining in the Atacama desert was flowing into Santiago at the time and a wine industry sprang up just south of the city. Santa Rita, along with its contempories Cousiño Macul and Concha Y Toro, introduced vines from France and began to make wine. Today, Santa Rita has five wineries across Chile with the combined capacity to produce and store nearly 90 million liters of wine. The company's diversity of vineyards means a diverse portfolio. For instance, Santa Rita's vineyards in the Limari Valley are planted on alluvial soils and there is a warm Mediterranean climate, so Chardonnay, Carmenère and Syrah do well. However, in Leyda Valley, the fine clay soils and the cooler climate are better suited to Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. Santa Rita's flagship wine is the Casa Real, a Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from vineyards surrounding the Maipo estate. It is aged for 14 months in new French and American oak before release, and can be happily cellared for a decade or so. Another key wine is the Bougainville Petite Sirah, a premium red made from a grape variety not usually seen in Chile. Other notable wines in the Santa Rita portfolio include the Reserva range, the Medalla Real range, and the entry-level 120 range.

Producer: Beringer Vintage: NV Size: 750ml ABV: 13.7% Varietal: Merlot Country/Region: United States, California Medium bodied and apparently semisweet, this wine is very fruity in aroma, and simple and candied in flavor. The 1986 Cabernet Sauvignon was named number one in Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 1990, and the 1994 Chardonnay was named...

Aged in oak barrels, it is pleasantly dry with vanilla aromas, bold fruitiness, and light tannins. Producer Information Biltmore Winery is a wine producer established on the site of the huge, historic Vanderbilt family estate in Asheville, North Carolina. Established as a wine estate in the 1970s by William Cecil Vandebilt, the winery now produces a range of sparkling, blended and single-varietal wines. The estate itself was established by William Cecil's grandfather, George Washington Vandebilt II, of the prominent Vandebilt family, in the late 19th Century. Vandebilt had visited the area and fallen in love with the countryside, establishing a 125,000-acre (50,500-hectare) landholding which eventually housed a vast 250-room family château. In the early 1970s a vineyard of hybrid grapes was established close to the house by William Cecil Vandebilt although, by the end of the decade, a 150-acre (60-hectare) vineyard of Vitis vinifera varieties was planted at the western end of the estate. The Biltmore Estate Wine Company was formally established in 1983 with the first official wines produced released a year later (the 1983 vintage Château Biltmore Merlot and Château Biltmore Cabernet Sauvignon). The winery is opened to the public in 1985 and sales continue to grow for the winery well into the 21st Century, with expansions in distribution throughout the US and an ever-growing range of wines. The winery currently produces around 150,000 cases of wine (1.3 million liters) annually. Estate wines include varietally labeled wines such as Chardonnay, Albariño and Cabernet Sauvignon as well as blends, such as Cardinal's Crest. The estate also produces a wide range of méthode traditionnelle sparkling wines including a standard Brut, Blanc de Blancs and Blanc de Noir. The portfolio also covers the Antler Hill label – a series of, often varietally labeled, wines produced from Californian AVAs.

It is distinctively dark and weighty with aromas and flavors of blueberries, black tea and cocoa and spice box. Producer Information Gundlach Bundschu, based in Sonoma, is one of California's oldest family-owned wineries. It makes a range of wines in Sonoma from regionally popular grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zinfandel. The estate was founded in 1858 when Jacob Gundlach bought a 160-hectare (400-acre) property and named it Rhinefarm. Charles Bundschu joined the company a decade later, and soon married into the family. From the 1870s, the estate began experimenting with native rootstocks in the fight against phylloxera – these vines were only replanted in 1969. By 1906 the business was running a large-scale winery in San Francisco but this, along with a million gallons of wine, was destroyed in the earthquake that year, forcing Gundlach Bundschu to consolidate on a smaller scale. Gundlach Bundschu's estate vineyard, Rhinefarm, is in the southern reaches of the Sonoma Valley, on southwest-facing slopes in the foothills of the Mayacamas. It was expanded in 1997 and today there are 130 hectares (320 acres) of vineyards, broken up into 60 different plots. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zinfandel are grown on the mountainside vineyards, while the valley floor sites are planted to Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and additional plots of Merlot. The wines are released under the Sonoma Coast, Sonoma County and Sonoma Valley AVAs. Gundlach Bundschu's flagship wine is the Vintage Reserve, a limited bottling of Cabernet Sauvignon that has a different label for each vintage. Around 40,000 cases of wine are produced each year.

Producer: Domaine Bousquet Vintage: NV Size: 750ml ABV: 13.5% Varietal: Merlot Country/Region: Argentina, Tupungato Intense purple color with reddish tones. On the nose presents red and black fruits mixed with mild spices. It is elegant in style, with minerals, cherry, and blackcurrant on the palate. Medium body with fine tannins. Producer Information A 1990 vacation in Argentina was all it took. For third-generation winemaker Jean Bousquet, it was love at first sight. The object of the Frenchman’s desire: the Gualtallary Valley, a scenic, remote, arid terrain high in the Tupungato district of the Uco Valley in Argentina’s Mendoza region, close to the border with Chile. Here, where the condors fly and not a vine in sight, Bousquet discovered his dream terroir, an ideal location in which to nurture organically-grown wines. With altitudes ranging up to 5,249 feet, Gualtallary occupies the highest extremes of Mendoza’s viticultural limits. Fast-forward to the present and wine cognoscenti recognize it as the source of some of Mendoza’s finest wines. Back then, it was virgin territory: tracts of semi-desert, nothing planted, no water above ground, no electricity and a single dirt track by way of access. Locals dismissed the area as too cold for growing grapes. Bousquet, on the other hand, reckoned he’d found the perfect blend between his French homeland and the New World (sunny, with high natural acidity and a potential for relatively fruit-forward wines). Bousquet’s daughter, economist Anne Bousquet, and her husband Labid Al Ameri, a successful trader with Fidelity in Boston, found themselves increasingly drawn to the cause, including the opportunity it offered to put their shared philosophy on sustainability into effect. After a 2002 trip to Argentina, the couple began to invest in Domaine Bousquet. In 2005, Al Ameri joined his father-in-law full time, helping with the construction of the winery. Anne continued her work as an economist, before joining the company in 2008. In 2009, the couple moved to Tupungato full-time, assuming full ownership of Domaine Bousquet in 2011.

Although Opus One is now a separate entity to Robert Mondavi Winery, it still bears Mondavi's silhouette on the bottle. The Robert Mondavi brand was sold to beverage giant Constellation Brands in 2004,...
