Producer: Champagne Philippe Glavier Vintage: NV Size: 500ml Varietal: Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir Country/Region: France, Champagne Producer Information Philippe Glavier may be one of the smallest producers in the Côte des Blancs, but size does not diminish value or quality. His are poignant, driven and super-classy blancs de blancs – mini-masterpieces – in a style not dissimilar to the precision and purity seen in Pierre Gimonnet. I should have travelled to Champagne in April, but the world had other ideas. It would have been a week-long immersion in a stream of tastings and festivities organised by various winegrowing groups, known as Le Printemps des Champagnes. Philippe and Véronique Glavier would have been there. Instead, I organised a virtual ‘walk’ through their cuvérie and one-on-one chat with Véronique over Zoom one evening. She is the wife, co-owner and public arm of Champagne Philippe Glavier, named after her husband, a third-generation vigneron from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger in Champagne’s ‘white hillside’, the Côte des Blancs. Véronique comes from neighbouring Cramant, representing thirteen generations of winegrowing. “I never wanted to marry a grower – ever!” smiles Véronique who first met Philippe in 1993 on a ski trip. It’s a story that is not uncommon between winegrowing families in Champagne where love often befalls a chance to build or extend small domaines with preciously inherited vineyards. With little money to speak of, Philippe begged and borrowed to get by until finding his feet. Véronique’s father was one of the most generous, granting Philippe access to his press at night without charge, once he had completed his daily harvest work. The arrangement became his rhythm for years and an opportunity to cut his teeth on something real beyond the tomes of theory absorbed at the Lycée d’Avize. It gave rise to the formation of his own label – Champagne Philippe Glavier – in 1995, and money soon followed. Enough was scraped together to buy a press, “the smallest in Champagne”, muses Véronique, with a capacity of just 2000kg, but at least it could fit into her parent’s garage. Convenient, yes, but it also suited their tiny production of just 4.6 hectares spread across 52 parcels. Small press, big results. Glavier’s champagnes speak loudly of their grand cru origins, imbued with the glory of chardonnay’s chalky freshness and fine finesse. All cuvées are blanc de blancs, with the exception of their rosé for which they source...

Medium-bodied, elegantly fleshy and incisive, it's bright and chalky, with a mineral, delicately oak-inflected finish. Producer Information The Doyard family traces their winemaking roots in Champagne back to 1677 when a marriage license of Jean-Baptise Doyard showed “winegrower” as the occupation. Maurice Doyard was the first in the family to make wine in Vertus under the Doyard label in 1927, officially signifying the domaine’s foundation. In 1979, Yannick Doyard took over, turning it into a beacon for precise, vinous, mineral-etched Champagne in the Côtes des Blancs. Today, Yannick’s son Guillaume is at the helm, farming 10 ha of prime vineyards in Vertus and the Grand Cru villages of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Cramant, Oger, Avize and Aÿ. The domaine employs organic farming in the vines, with most of the vineyards worked by horse. Yields are kept very low, adding to the concentrated intensity that defines the estate’s style. In the cellar, state of the art double-banked Coquard PAI presses are employed to get the cleanest and most delicate juice possible and every parcel is vinified separately in barrel. All of the wines undergo very long lees aging before disgorgement — a minimum of 48 months on all cuvées — which truly sets them apart from much of Champagne and is a key component to achieve the incredible complexity and depth that is found throughout their magnificent lineup.

Producer: Champagne Bollinger Vintage: 2013 Size: 750ml ABV: 12.5% Varietal: Pinot Noir Country/Region: France, Champagne This wine is the purest expression of Pinot Noir, offering a fine, delicate texture in the mouth, and a tautness giving it a beautifully long finish. Producer Information Champagne Bollinger is one of the most famous houses in Champagne, in northern France. It is notable for its muscular, Pinot Noir-dominant cuvée, and is widely available around the world. The house, originally known as Renaudin-Bollinger & Cie, was founded in 1829. It passed through generations of the family of Bollinger until 2008 when, for the first time in its history, the chairman came from outside of the family. Champagne Bollinger is still independently owned by Société Jacques Bollinger. Bollinger is located in Aÿ in the heart of Champagne, and the majority of the vines are located on premier cru and grand cru plots. The house style is focused on Pinot Noir, with Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier being used to enhance rather than dominate. Pinot Noir makes up no less than 60 percent of all of the Bollinger collection, and there is no Blanc de Blanc in the portfolio. Two thirds of the grapes are estate grown, with the rest coming from growers with a long history with the house; all plots are vinified separately to allow for each specific terroir to be fully expressed. Bollinger manages 169 hectares (417 acres) of vineyards. Bollinger has a vast array of barrels dating back to 1903. The majority are purchased from a French négociant at three years of age and are maintained by an in-house cooper until the age of 30. This allows for the roundness of style and integrated flavor typical of Bollinger. The house also has a large portfolio of reserve wines that are kept under cork rather than the more traditional crown cap. This is both time-consuming and expensive, with hand riddling and disgorgement needed, which is why the majority of Champagne houses do not follow this practice. The Bollinger collection encompasses non-vintage brut and rosé wines, La Grand Année Brut and Rosé, as well as prestige cuvées, RD, Vielles Vignes Francaises and La Cote aux Enfants. RD (meaning recently disgorged) was the brainchild of Madame Bollinger in the mid 20th Century, a major innovation of the time. This cuvée is kept on its lees much...

Producer: Champagne Pierre Gerbais Vintage: 2020 Size: 750ml ABV: 12.5% Varietal: Red Blend Country/Region: France, Champagne Coteaux Champenois Rouge conveys precise aromas of red fruit, tomato vine and forest floor followed by great freshness, tension and purity on the palate. Flavours of cranberry, sour cherry and plum are led by a firm line of minerality, complemented and balanced evenly with gentle tannins and pleasant acidity. Producer Information Eight generations of the Gerbais family have their vine growing roots in Champagne and particularly in Celles-sur-Source in the Côte des Bars, the southernmost part of Champagne, and they have been making Champagnes themselves since 1930. Their vines are situated on land at the confluence of four river valleys, of the Laignes, Seine, Ource and Arce, which provides several expositions and terroirs to choose from, including south-facing slopes – known locally as ‘en droit’ - proffering richer, riper wines, and some facing north – envers, or ‘the wrong side’ – which bring freshness and vivacity, particularly in warmer years. In many ways the geology here is closer to that of Chablis and parts of the Côte d’Or than the majority of Champagne on the Marne further north. Indeed, Aurélien Gerbais, who joined the family business in 2009 and is now winemaker, takes Burgundy as an inspiration for some of his methods, down to using demi-muids once belonging to Olivier Lamy in Saint-Aubin in the Côte de Beaune to store his reserve wines. Today they own 18 hectares of vines, the vast majority in and around Celles-sur-Source. 10 hectares of the vineyard area is planted with pinot noir, with the remainder split between pinot blanc and chardonnay. Indeed, the Gerbais family is the most important producer of pinot blanc in Champagne, with their four hectares. All their grapes are farmed sustainably, employing organic principles, and they use organic and indigenous yeasts. Aurélien is not resting on anyone’s laurels here and is restlessly and seriously trying new methods in oak fermentation and malolactic and experimenting with yeast alongside traditional methods to produce complex and fascinating Champagnes.

Producer: Champagne Bollinger Vintage: 1997 Size: 750ml ABV: 11.5% Varietal: Pinot Noir Country/Region: France, Champagne This wine shows terrific balance and harmony. Quite delicate and smooth texture on the long finish. This cuvée is kept on its lees much longer than any other wine in the range. Disgorging the bottle just before release – hence the...

This one is a powerful mouthful of very direct, ripe berry fruit flavours that still seem young and aromas of spice and blackberry. (EM) James Suckling: This was considered a great, great vintage in northern California, but not all wines have aged well. This one is a powerful mouthful of very direct, ripe berry fruit flavours that still seem young and aromas of spice and blackberry. (EM) Producer Information Champagne Ruinart was one of the first Champagne houses, established in 1729. It takes its name from the Benedictine monk Dom Ruinart, whose writings on Champagne were passed down through his family and resulted in the Maison Ruinart we know today. Dom Ruinart was born in Champagne in 1657, and died in 1709. He moved from his home to an abbey just outside of Paris, where he began to learn about the "wine with bubbles", which was very popular among the young aristocrats of the time. He believed it could be made best on the soils of his hometown. Upon his death in 1709, he left many books containing his writings on this to his nephew Nicolas Ruinart and, 20 years later, Maison Ruinart was founded. The Ruinart house was passed through the family for the next two centuries, during which time they were the first to ship rosé Champagne, as well as being the first to ship their bottles in wooden cases. From humble beginnings, the house now produces almost 2 million bottles a year and is currently owned by luxury brand superpower LVMH. Ruinart owns vineyards across the Champagne region, predominantly in the Côtes de Blancs and the Montagne de Reims. The house style...

A medium to full-bodied wine that will continue to evolve in the cellar. Producer Information Champagne Henri Giraud is the one of the oldest Champagne houses still owned by its founding family – the Giraud-Hémart family who have farmed vines in Aÿ since 1625. However, it is only since current head Claude Giraud took over that the wines have been released under the family name. An annual production of around 250,000 bottles is sourced from 10 hectares (25 acres) of estate vineyards, spread over 35 plots, plus fruit bought mostly from family and friends. The flagship release is the rich, voluptuous Fût de Chêne, a Pinot Noir-dominant Champagne blend. Aside from the Blanc de Blancs and the Code Noir Blanc de Noirs, the white wines are typically 70-percent Pinot Noir with 30-percent Chardonnay. Use of oak is a feature of all cuvées except the standard Esprit de Giraud. The Blanc de Blancs features just a small proportion of oak-aged Chardonnay, while the base wine for the Hommage sees six months in oak barrels. The Pinot Noir for the Code Noir is fermented and aged in Argonne oak, as is the range-topping Fût de Chêne vintage wine.

As well as avoiding sulfur, there are no chemical additions, chaptalization or acidity management, and no fining or filtration of the base wines. Fermentations use native yeasts. It combines 47 percent each of Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier with 6 percent Pinot Noir. The base wine is vinified entirely in thermoregulated stainless steel. Both the Blanc de Chardonnay and Blanc de Meunier have zero dosage though the former is labeled as an Extra Brut and the latter as a Brut Nature. Output for both is about 3,700 bottles. Producer: Henri Giraud Vintage: 2018 Size: 750ml ABV: 13% Varietal: Pinot Noir Country/Region: France, Champagne Its nose reveals a fruity and expressive bouquet. On the palate, it is a great red wine, with notes of red fruits, a touch of mint, and still the typical freshness of the Champagne region. The finish is beautiful and persistent.

The palate, tense and fleshy at the same time, is reminiscent of certain Anjou Chenins in its contrasts. Producer Information Founded in 1947 by Roger Pouillon, Champagne R. Pouillon et Fils were dedicated Growers from the beginning. Fabrice Pouillon continues to build on what his father and grandfather created, crafting unique and artisanal Champagnes. Owning 6.5ha of land across Ay Grand Cru, the Vallee de la Marne and Montagne de Reims, Fabrice creates expressive wines that are vibrantly aromatic. Dedicated to the vitality, energy and health of his vineyards, he began the conversion to organics in 2003 and today also incorporates biodynamic principles. Tradition is key in the winery: the handpicked grapes are pressed in the traditional wooden press, in the time-honoured way begun by Fabrice’s grandfather, and each of the 36 vine parcels are vinified separately to focus on the grapes’ origin. The wines age in a combination of older oak demi-muids and barriques, where everything undergoes malolactic fermentation. Reserve wines are aged for up to 18 months in wooden tanks and there is a ‘solera’ system in operation, with wines dating back to the late 1990s.

Producer: Grumier Vintage: 2012 Size: 750ml Varietal: Pinot Noir Country/Region: France, Champagne Producer Information In 1743, the Grumier family was already living in Venteuil and growing vines. The generations succeeded one another as history unfolded, and it was in 1928 that Amand Grumier decided to keep his harvest and make his first Champagne. His wife Aline helped and supported him in this venture which few vintners dared to try in those difficult times for winegrowers. When his son Maurice came back from the war in 1945, he took over the vineyard and turned it into a prosperous business. He added his first name to the brand “Maurice Grumier” and we still use this brand name today.Maurice died in an accident in 1968, leaving Guy and his wife Françoise to run the vineyard. In the thirty years that followed, they expanded the domain and modernised it, developing sales while constantly seeking the highest quality for their products. In 1999, Fabien graduated from viticultural college and joined them on the estate. In 2005 his wife Helène arrived at the vineyard. Together they developed new cuvees and progressively turned to exporting some of their Champagnes to Italy, Switzerland, Japan, etc.

Great length, medium tannins and acidity with very good balance. A really wonderful and delicious wine. Producer Information Champagne Paul Bara is a Grand Cru Champagne producer of the Bouzy commune. The Champagne house is widely known as the most renowned producer of the region. The estate was first constructed as an agricultural farm in 1860, but it wasn't until 1965 that the building was converted to a winery. Paul Bara is a rare récoltant-manipulant (meaning the house produces champagne from grapes grown by themselves) of Bouzy, a major of producers here are large, corporate Champagne houses. Estate vineyards are all Grand Cru and found within the commune of Bouzy in the Montagne de Reims subregion. The deep and chalky soils here are excellent terroir to create wine with intense fruit and mineral complexity. The Bara family have cultivated 11 hectares of vineyards, 9.5ha of Pinot Noir and 1.5ha of Chardonnay in Bouzy for seven generations. Grapes are hand-harvest prior to a whole-bunch press in both a wooden-basket and a modern electric press. Each plot is kept seperate throughout the fermentation process with the white and rosé wines prevented from malolactic fermentation. The Brut "L'Annonciase se Paul Bara" Blac de Noir is produced in commemoration of a family ancestor; Annonciade was a daughter of a local winemaker who married into the family to Auguste Bara, a young cooper. Their son Jules Bara constructed the first cellar of Paul Bara. The grapes are sourced from vines with an average age of 50 years. Other notable wines in the collection include the Bouzy Brut Grand Cru "Comtesse Marie de France". It was first produced for a restaurant that has since ceased operation and now, is the reason why Paul Bara are required to add MA meaning Marque d'Acheteur rather than RM for récoltant-manipulant onto wine labels.

It is a so-called "grower" Champagne house, which means it only makes wines from vineyard plots that it owns, rather than buying in grapes, which is common for the larger houses. Vilmart's standard cuvée is Chardonnay-dominant, with Pinot Noir contributing around 30-percent. On top of this, the house produces a range of other wines, including the flagship Grand Cellier d'Or vintage wine, also Chardonnay-dominant, made from the oldest plots of vines. The base wine is aged for 10 months in 228-liter oak barrels before the secondary fermentation. There are numerous other wines including the Rubis rosé.
