Producer: Château de Beaucastel Vintage: 1997 Size: 1.5L ABV: 13.5% Varietal: Southern Rhone Red Blend Country/Region: France, Rhone Such beautiful black cherries, fresh earth, sage, basil and flowers on the nose, following through to a medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and an attractive, lightly chewy finish. This is very long and fresh with balance and purity. Producer Information Château de Beaucastel is a wine producer based in Courthézon, in the northern Châteauneuf-du-Pape region of the southern Rhône. It makes some of the most famous wines in the whole of the Rhône Valley, from a classic southern Rhône blend that includes Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah, as well as the lesser-known Counoise and Cinsaut varieties. The estate reportedly dates back to 1549 when Pierre de Beaucastel bought a barn and a plot of vineyards in the region and inscribed his family's crest onto the walls. The land passed through the family until 1909, when it came under control of scientist Pierre Perrin. Today, Perrin's grandsons Jean-Pierre and François run the estate. The château is located in the northeast corner of the appellation, just southeast of the city of Orange. There are around 100 hectares (250 acres) planted to vine, three-quarters of which is used to make the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC wines. Château de Beaucastel has all 13 of the permitted grape varieties for Châteauneuf-du-Pape planted in the vineyard (Bourboulenc; Brun Argenté/Vaccarèse; Cinsault; Clairette Blanc and Rose; Counoise; Grenache Blanc, Gris and Noir; Mourvèdre; Muscardin; Picardan; Piquepoul Blanc Gris and Noir; Roussanne; Syrah; and Terret Noir), giving the winemaking team a choice of fruit at harvest. The vines, which are up to 50 years old, are planted on a combination of sandstone, rocks and limestone, which drain freely, helping the vines produce concentrated berries. The grapes are hand-picked and are vinified in lots to provide consistency for blending, and oak is used sparingly. Château de Beaucastel's flagship Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine is predominantly made from Grenache and Mourvèdre, with a range of other grape varieties, including a portion of white grapes. There is also a Châteauneuf-du-Pape blanc, which...

Producer: Domaine Joseph Roty Ratings: WA 91 VN 93 Vintage: 2019 Size: 750ml ABV: 13.5% Varietal: Pinot Noir Country/Region: France, Burgundy The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur Bas displays a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, touches of brown spice and espresso emerging with time. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur Bas unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet berries and cherries mingled with warm spices, licorice and peonies. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and fleshy, with powdery tannins and an elegantly muscular profile, it shows considerable promise for the cellar. Pierre-Jean Roty suggests that his 2019 vintage is defined by "generosity and freshness," comparing the wines to a hypothetical blend of the domaine's 2005 and 2012 vintages, and reports that he began his harvest on September 20. The range has turned out brilliantly, marrying the vintage-typical charm and sensuality with the depth and structure typical at this address to deliver wines that will offer broad and lengthy drinking windows. Vinous: The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur Bas displays a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, touches of brown spice and espresso emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with granular tannins, a fine bead of acidity and a dash of white pepper and clove toward the finish. I like the focus and harmony of this Gevrey, and it should age well after 4–5 years in bottle to absorb the new wood. Producer Information Domaine Joseph Roty and Domaine Philippe Roty are leading Burgundy domaines, with some of the largest cult followings in the country. The Rotys have been producing wine in Gevrey-Chambertin since 1710, and the range of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines from their 12 hectares (30 acres) of vines are considered some of the best made on the Côte d'Or. Domaine Joseph Roty is the core estate. Joseph himself, who died in 2008, was a legendary figure in the region, not only for the quality of the wines, but for his reluctance to speak to journalists and share details of their winemaking methods. His son Philippe, who had some parcels in Marsannay, set up an additional domaine with an address across the road from Joseph Roty. A smaller number of wines is made under the Philippe Roty label. Sadly, Philippe passed away in 2015 aged just 46,...

Pulpy substance driven by a movingly balanced acidity, an apple juice. Dry finish, incredibly fine yellow color. Amazingly beautiful. Fizzy and refreshing. Definitely worth tasting! Producer Information Marie-Noëlle Ledru is a rare breed of female vigneron – she calls herself a ‘viticultrice’. As a civil servant, she inherited the property from her parents who retired in 1984. Her philosophy is virtually organic, using no insecticides and no herbicides, and if treatments are necessary, only environment friendly options are considered. Until recently the Ledru estate was 6 hectares in size but family disputes have resulted in her vineyards being reduced to a 2.5 hectares. 2ha Pinot in Ambonnay and .5ha Chardonnay in Bouzy. The wines are all classically vinified in tank with no oak maturation and malo-lactic fermentations occur. Yields are low, chaptalization is avoided, no filtration, no cold stabilisation, dosages are all low and minimal amounts of sulphur are used during the appropriate wine making processes. Bottles are disgorged by hand. The entire wine making process is manual and labour intensive – and the results speak loud. The Ledru style focuses on purity, complexity, power and yet all of this is enclosed in an elegant framework. The novice may think that oak is utilised somewhere in the wine making process, but you would be wrong. Precisely manicured and maintained vineyards are the key. “Great wines start in the vineyard” – and Marie-Noëlle is the perfect example. Now she produces tiny quantities of great Champagne, not taking on any new customers and rationing out what she has to loyal existing customers.

Quite delicate and smooth texture on the long finish. Producer Information Domaine de la Grand'Cour is a Beaujolais estate with the majority of its vineyards in Fleurie. It produces a number of red wines sourced from different vineyards in Fleurie and Brouilly, all from the Gamay wine grape variety. The domaine was founded in 1969 by Jean Dutraive, making it one of the oldest estates in the region. It farms a little more than 10 hectares (24 acres) of vineyards with fewer than 1000 cases produced annually from each plot, with some variation depending on the vintage. In the winery, the domaine practices a number of minimalist winemaking techniques. All the fruit is hand-harvested, wild yeasts are used for fermentation and carbonic maceration is kept at low temperatures. Aging often takes place in used Burgundy oak barrels but depending on the vintage and the cuvée, cement vats and used wooden foudres can be employed. This superb blanc de blancs is vinified without malolactic fermentation and matured in oak barrels. The resulting wine is finely textured, full of freshness and finesse. Producer Information Olivier Collard’s family has been making wine in Champagne for several generations, Olivier’s grandfather being something of a local legend in Villers-sous-Chatillon. But the Collards are anything but dynastic - rather, they are devoted to building something new with every generation. Olivier’s father set out on his own, building his own Champagne house and business outside the shadow of Olivier’s grandfather. Then, when the time came (in 1996), Olivier founded Collard-Picard with his wife Caroline Picard. Caroline’s family farmed the Côte des Blancs, while Olivier’s vines were in the Vallée de la Marne. With tremendous Chardonnay from Mesnil, and great Pinot (Noir & Meunier) to select, Olivier sets an uncompromising standard of excellence in the winery. He cuts the press juice in four (standard practice is three) and selects only the free run and gentlest cuts, preferring to sell the more phenolic juice to other houses. The results are fantastic. The Cuvée Selection sees only tank ageing, while all the other cuvées go into oak foudres for much of their élévage. The oak is used more for mouthfeel than flavour, and the richness that results often lead to comparisons to Krug.

Smoky red berries and blood orange on the spicy, mineral-inflected nose and in the mouth. Broad and sappy on entry, then tighter in the mid-palate, with gentle acidity adding lift. The lingering finish echoes the ripe fruit and mineral character. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Based on the 2017 vintage and disgorged in May 2021, the latest release of Péters's NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Cuvée de Réserve continues to show very nicely. Bursting with aromas of crisp orchard fruit, honeycomb, white flowers and fresh bread, it's medium-bodied, pillowy and generous, with a refined mousse and an elegantly fleshy core of fruit. This is a fine-boned, weightless blanc de blancs that's disarmingly easy to drink. Decanter: Made up, half and half, of base wine from the sunny 2018 harvest, and reserve wine from Rodolphe’s Perpetual Reserve which goes back to 1988, this is one of the most consistently excellent NV wines on the market. Its current iteration is especially impressive, floral, chalky, upstanding, and very complex; the palate sharing notes of dried apricot, plum and lemon pith with more developed intimations of sour honey and patisserie. An exemplary wine with real purity and precision on the finish. Producer Information Pierre Péters is a Champagne house in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger particularly known for its range of Blanc de Blancs Chardonnay wines. In the last decade or so the estate has risen quickly into the top flight, garnering attention from international critics. The Péters family has grown grapes on the Côte des Blancs for six generations, beginning in 1858 when Gaston Péters of Luxembourg married into a family of local growers. The wines were labeled Camille Péters from 1919 to 1944, when it was renamed for the new proprietor, Pierre Péters. To this day, the house remains family-owned and run. The wines are made exclusively from estate vineyards, which is unusual in the region. In total, Pierre Péters has just over 19 hectares (47 acres) of Chardonnay vines...

Producer Information Denis Varnier is only the third generation of winemakers at this estate, but grape growing in the Fannière family (Denis’ mother’s side of the family) dates back to 1860. Although the estate is small at just over 4 hectares, Varnier-Fannière’s holdings are impressive, averaging 45 years in age. Denis’ holdings are in three grand cru villages in the northern Côte des Blancs. He has as much land in Cramant as he does in Avize, with a smaller holding in the village of Oiry. His wines are precise and terroir expressive, in the direction of Avize “graphite”, while also being delicious and pleasurable. They exude class and fastidious detail. For a taste of absolute Avize, taste the Cuvée Saint Denis hailing from a single-site of 70 year-old vines, from the monocru Clos de Grand Pere. The Avize slopes are planted entirely with Chardonnay. The grapes from the steep slopes provide better and more delicate wines, but, in blending, the more robust specimens from the relatively flat terrain lower down in the village hold their own. Essentially, Avize produces rather more powerful wines than the slightly more fragrant ones from Cramant or Le Mesnil. . . . The nutty and roasted aromas are not to be found among its neighbors, leaning more to chocolate, leather, and truffles, and improving with age. One often finds a high percentage of Avize Chardonnay in famous prestige Champagnes produced by the larger houses.

The mouth, of great purity presents a beautiful volume, evolving towards a long and nicely mineral finish. Reviews: Wine Spectator: This taut bubbly offers vivacious acidity integrated with tightly knit layers of lemon meringue, white peach, ground mace and biscuit, with a touch of sea salt, all set on the refined, creamy texture. A young powerhouse. Producer Information Philipponnat is a historic French Champagne house owned by the family of the same name. The Philipponnat's wine history in the region dates back to the 16th Century when they were growers and merchants, supplying wine to the court of Louis XIV. The company's 18th Century cellars were part of the Château de Mareuil. Philipponnat is particularly known for the Clos des Goisses vintage deluxe cuvées (brut and rosé), produced from and named for a 5.5 hectare (13.6 acre) walled vineyard. Here, an unshaded 45-degree slope facing due south is regarded to provide the region's warmest terroir allowing the grapes to achieve maximal ripening potential. The house's single plot cuvées are a trio sourced from Premier or Grand Cru plots at Le Léon in Ay, Mareuil-sur-Ay and Clos des Goisse. These vintage blanc de blancs have been aged for at least seven years prior to release. The collection also includes the Royale Réserve non-vintage line and a broad selection of styles of vintage wines. In the cellar, Philipponnat uses a form of solera system of aging for the reserve wine component of its non-vintage blends, blending a quarter to one-third of the barrel-aged reserve wine with the current year's production, and retaining a portion of this blend to form the reserve wine for the following year. The house claims to be the first to indicate on the back label the main year used in the non-vintage blends, along with the dosage level and date of disgorgement.

Producer: Hospices de Civiles de Beaune Vintage: 2020 Size: 750ml ABV: 13.5% Varietal: Pinot Noir Country/Region: France, Burgundy Producer Information Hospices de Civiles de Beaune is a former charitable almshouse founded in 1443 in the town of Beaune. It is now a modern hospital, with the original buildings serving as a museum. Since 1859, a charity wine auction has raised funds for the hospital with the wines produced being released under the Hospice's umbrella label. The wines are made at the Hospices winery from around 60 hectares (150 acres) of vineyard holdings which have been donated to the charity over many decades. Much of these are in premier and grand cru vineyard sites including Clos de la Roche, Mazis-Chambertin and Corton. As of 2018 there are 50 cuvées which can be made; 33 red wine and 17 white wines. Along with the identity of the Grand Cru or Premier Cru, each label features the name of the historic donor. The auction of these just-made wines in barrel takes place on the third Sunday in November, with both amateurs and professionals bidding. Prices tend to exceed 'normal' market values but give some indication of likely trends for bulk wine prices for the coming year. The wines are then shipped to the negociant-eleveur designated by the purchaser (who may themselves be a wine producer) who age the wines in barrel and then bottle them. The name of this company typically appears on the label, along with the purchaser and the cuvée name. Thus the style of any given cuvée can vary greatly from year to year. The growth in scale of the auction has meant that independent specialists have been required to run proceedings – Christies have managed the event since 2005. Auction tastings now take place in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

The finish is quite unique, rich and long-lasting. Producer Information Domaine Ponsot is a family-owned wine producer in Burgundy. It is known for its red and white wines made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but is also well-known for the Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru Clos des Monts Luisants, the only 100-percent Aligoté premier cru wine in Burgundy. The domaine was founded in 1872 by the Ponsot family in Morey-Saint-Denis. Most of the domaine's holdings are in grand cru and premier cru vineyards, and Ponsot makes wines from such famous vineyards as Clos de la Roche, Clos de Vougeot and Corton. Unlike most Burgundy houses, Domaine Ponsot does not make regional wines under the Bourgogne title. It also manages its vineyards and wineries differently to other producers in Burgundy. There are no sorting tables – bunch management is done in the vineyard. The wines go through uncontrolled ferments, and are not filtered or fined. The domaine gained notoriety when it was embroiled in the widespread wine fraud of counterfeiter Rudy Kurniawan. In 2008, owner Laurent Ponsot was sent an auction list that included some old vintages of Ponsot wines. Some of these were wines that had never been produced, and suspecting counterfeit, asked that these wines were withdrawn from the auction. Since then, Ponsot has looked into various counterfeiting measures, and in 2009, the bottles were fingerprinted with unique bubble codes that were impossible to reproduce.

A blend of 50% Grenache and equal parts Syrah and Mourvedre that’s aged for 18 months in new oak, it has a deep, rich bouquet of blackberry, crème de cassis, licorice, leather, graphite, and spice-box that gives way to a full-bodied, perfectly balanced Châteauneuf-du-Pape that builds on the palate, with fantastic richness, ripe tannin, and a finish that won’t quit. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Another blockbuster is the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Origines. A blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 20% Mourvedre (45- to-95-year-old vines) aged in small oak, it exhibits an opaque purple color as well as a sweet bouquet of blackberries, espresso roast, ink and graphite. While clearly a modern-styled Chateauneuf du Pape, it retains plenty of the region's typicity and authenticity. Wine Spectator: Racy, offering delicious dark bramble, linzer torte and blackberry notes, with a strong graphite edge coursing through the finish. Gains density and flesh on the finish, which bodes well for the cellar. A modern style, but shows solid grounding in its terroir. Producer Information Established in the northern part of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in the commune of Orange, the Jaume family has been dedicated to the art of wine growing since 1826. Founded by Mathieu Jaume, the Domaine is now run by the 5th and 6th generations of Jaumes: Alain Jaume & his children Christophe, Sébastien, and Hélène. The estate now measures 225 acres and covers four appellations: Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes-du-Rhône 'Les Champauvins' & Côtes-du-Rhône (Rouge, Blanc & Rosé), Lirac, and Vacqueyras. Both Grand Veneur and Clos de Sixte vineyards are grown in accordance with certified organic agricultural practices. The soils are maintained exclusively by light plowing and fertilized with vegetal compost. The vines are only sprayed when there are justified risks to the health of the vines, and only organic-permitted treatments are used. Yields are low, or kept...

Producer: Chateau de l'Aumerade Vintage: 2021 Size: 750ml ABV: 12.5% Varietal: Southern Rhone Red Blend Country/Region: France, Provence A tangy wine with a yeasty edge that is still bringing out its crisp fruit. It will be a bright wine, full of a fine combination of citrus and red berry fruits. Producer Information Wine first appeared in the Château’s history in the 1st century AD, however it was only brought to light in the 16th century by Henry IV. The French king fell in love with the location’s beauty and quality of wine. He ordered his prime minister, the Duke of Sully, to introduce the wines to the French court and to plant, on 15 February 1594, France’s first blackberry bush along with stunning plane trees that still adorn the château’s terrace. In the 18th century, the estate was bought by the Aumérat family and was renamed Château de l’Aumérade. In 1932, Henri Fabre fell in love with l’Aumérade and bought the estate. He and his wife, Charlotte, were among the first bottlers and founders of Côtes de Provence wines. They overhauled the château and in 1955 were awarded the title of Cru Classé, which only 18 property owners in Provence can claim. Helped by their son, Louis Fabre, they expanded their wine sales and exports. In 1956, Charlotte Fabre designed a unique bottle, one of the first in Provence, taking inspiration from one of Emile Gallé’s pâtes de verre vases. And so the Marie-Christine was born... Following in the footsteps of her grandfather and father, Marie-Christine Fabre-Grimaldi and her husband Vincent have carried on this tradition, drawing on 400 years of passion. Today, the wines are changing, the family is expanding and the future of Château de l’Aumérade is already under way with the next generation: Caroline, Clément and Delphine. Château de l’Aumérade is part of the Fabre Domains, which forms the largest family vineyard in the Var region.

Producer: Château Rayas Vintage: 2011 Size: 750ml ABV: 14% Varietal: Syrah Country/Region: France, Southern Rhone It presents itself with great elegance and charm with precise aromas, imposing but very fine tannins and great length. Producer Information Château Rayas is a leading producer in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation of the Rhône Valley. It is one of the region's most prestigious estates, and its wines fetch some of the highest prices in southern France. Much about Rayas is unusual. Firstly, the estate's red wine is made solely from Grenache, unlike most Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines that typically contain Syrah, Mourvèdre and a range of other varieties. Secondly, the estate's 13 hectares (32 acres) of vineyard face north, and do not have any "galets roulés" – the rounded stones so closely associated with the appellation and often found littering vineyard sites in Châteauneuf. Thirdly, the estate's wines are matured in larger-format, "double-piéce" 450-liter barrels. Château Rayas' flagship Châteauneuf-du-Pape label is known for its sweet, pure fruit and silky texture, and has a reputation as one of the best wines in the appellation for longer-term aging. The second label, Pignan, is also 100 percent Grenache, and tends to be gutsy and ripe and not quite so polished in style as the top cuvee. The château's white Châteauneuf-du-Pape is generally made from Grenache Blanc and Clairette in roughly equaly proportions. Château Rayas has been in the Reynaud family since the 1880s. Owner Emmanuel Reynaud also makes the (highly priced) Château de Fonsalette and Pialade Côtes du Rhône wines at the Rayas winery. Château des Tours in Vacqueyras is a separate estate and winery, under the same ownership.

Red Wine: 2015 Château La Nerthe Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee des Cadettes Expressive nose with notes of incredible youth on sweet spices, black cherries and fermentation aromas. Producer: Château La Nerthe Ratings: WA 94 JS 94 Vintage: 2015 Size: 750ml ABV: 14.5% Varietal: Southern Rhone Red Blend Country/Region: France, Chateauneuf-du-Pape Expressive nose with notes of incredible youth on sweet spices, black cherries and fermentation aromas. Once again is the freshness, youth and red fruits expression on the palate: notes of fresh grapes are superimposed on those of black fruits. Reviews: Wine Advocate: La Nerthe's 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Cadettes is a blend of approximately one-third each Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Eighty percent of the wine spent a year in new oak barrels, but much of that has been absorbed into the wine, and I see that my notes don't make reference to overt oak descriptors. Scents of raspberry and spice lead the way, followed by a firm, full-bodied palate. The tannins are present from front to back, but they're ripe and silky, lingering elegantly on the finish. James Suckling: A ripe, lush style, with warm and inviting plum, fig and boysenberry confiture notes gliding through. Offers a beautiful polished feel, with suave anise and black tea flavors filling in on the finish while the fruit just sails through. Relies primarily on fruit, and you can't blame it for that. Producer Information Château La Nerthe is a leading estate in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region of the southern Rhône Valley. The estate has been producing wine since the 12th Century, but its reputation has been largely earned by current proprietors the Richard family, who bought the property in a run-down state in 1985. The red wines are generally regarded as being more softly structured and more modern in style than some of the other top estates. The estate boasts 92 hectares (227 acres) of vineyard, which have been certified organic since 1998. All 13 of the legal varieties for red Châteauneuf-du-Pape are planted, although production centers on Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. The cellars, which date back to 1560, are dug directly into the rock beneath the property. Some of the original stone vats with meter-thick stone walls remain, and are now lined with epoxy resin. The château itself was built in 1736. The vast majority of Château la Nerthe's production is devoted to red wines....

Delicate herbal aromas are supported by dark berries, some sea buckthorn and hints of orange zest. Very juicy concentrated palate with sweet strawberries, finely woven tannins and a fresh mineral finish with nutty hints. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Composed entirely of Cabernet Franc this year, the 2021 Todeschini Distique 14 wafts from the glass with aromas of dark berries, loamy soil, woodsmoke and spices. Medium to full-bodied, lively and seamless, with powdery tannins and bright acids, it's a strong effort. James Suckling: This is vibrant and textured with firm and fine tannins. Medium body with notes of sandalwood, mulberries, raspberries and dried flowers. Attractively perfumed and textured. From organically grown grapes. Producer Information Château Mangot is a historic Saint-Émilion wine producer of Bordeaux, dating back to 1546. It has been owned and operated by the Todeschini family since 1976 and is thought to be the last vineyard in east Saint-Émilion before the Cotes de Bordeaux Castillon appellation. The 35 hectare (86.4 acres) vineyard of Château Mangot is planted with approximately 85 percent Merlot and 10 percent Cabernet Franc with a tiny portion of Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines average 40 years of age and are planted on limestone and clay-based soil types. The Grand Vin is primarily fermented in stainless steel prior to malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels. Barrel-aging is between 12 and 16 months depending on the vintage. The second wine is known as Château Bardoulet.

On the palate, the wine is very balanced and in line with the nose. The palate is full with a long length. Spicy aftertaste. A nice, fresh, fruity and elegant Tavel. Producer Information Guillaume Demoulin is the fourth generation of his family to farm the beautiful vineyards of Chateau de Trinquevedel. His great-grandfather, Eugène, bought the eighteenth-century chateau in 1936—an opportune decision that coincided with the establishment of Tavel's A.O.C that same year. However timely, the vineyards were in terrible disrepair, and Eugène had an enormous task ahead. By 1960, the grapes were finally producing wine worthy of the Demoulin's own bottlings, and the chateau had at last been restored to its former glory. Louis XIV was among the first to sing the praises of Tavel's delicious and memorable rosés, which only stands to reason given the appellation’s grand cru reputation today. Tavel is the only A.O.C. entirely made up of rosé, which prohibits any whites or reds from wearing the label of this Southern Rhône cru. No more than sixty percent of the final blend can be made up of the noble Grenache. In other appellations where rosé is made, it is often regarded as an afterthought— most of the grapes are frequently sourced from lesser parcels, as the lighter maceration of the grapes is seen as "wasting" precious juice. In Tavel, even the best parcels may contribute to the blend, yet another aspect that makes this cru so special.

Almost pure Grenache gives a wine packed with red-fruit flavors balanced by young, enthusiastic acidity. The fruitiness is delicious, fresh and crisp. Producer Information Château Minuty is a Provence winery in Saint-Tropez best known for its rosé wines. Minuty was one of the Cru Classés of Provence designated in 1955 in an effort to classify top producers in the region and create a tiered system similar to Bordeaux. However, the classification never secured as much credibility as Bordeaux, and instead recognizes longevity over quality. Château Minuty's rosé wines are some of the best-selling rosés in the United States. The estate has 65 hectares (160 acres) of estate vineyards in Saint-Tropez and 15 hectares (37 acres) in nearby Ramatuelle on the slopes of Val de Rians. Farming practices follow many organic techniques such as not using pesticides or herbicides, although Minuty has no formal organic certification. Grenache is the most important variety here, although Cinsaut, Syrah and Mourvèdre also feature in blends and also appear as varietal wines. In 2009, construction was completed on a new tank room with temperature-controlled, stainless steel tanks and a total capacity of 400,000 liters. Each individual vineyard block has a designated tank and is fermented separately. Minuty mostly makes Provence-designated wine but also has a range of Var IGP offers as well. The Rosé et Or, Prestige Rosé and the M Rosé have become Minuty's most recognizable wines, and are distributed in the US by Treasury Wine Estates. The success of the rosé has led to more Grenache plantings which, along with Rolle, replaced Ugni Blanc and Carignan in the vineyards in the 1990s.

Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee du Baron includes a higher proportion of Syrah than the regular cuvée, being a blend of 50% Grenache, 35% Syrah and 15% Mourvèdre. The estate considers Syrah something of specialty, and this does appear to have a bit more substance to it, delivering ripe black cherry and allspice flavors. Full-bodied, rich and velvety, it finishes with ample length. James Suckling: Very striking nose of crystalized violets. Ripe and slightly sweet entry, but then the powerful tannins make themselves felt, turning the wine in a decisively dry direction. Slightly bulky, but with plenty of depth and some complexity at the finish. Sustainable. Producer Information The Domain Chateau Fortia, is one of the oldest of Chateauneuf du Pape. The estate is situated in the "grenade" neighborhood where the lands are cultivated with vines since the 17th century. It is in the 19th century that Paul Antoine de Fortia, son of Hercule Paul de Fortia developed the vineyard and constructed new buildings; a notorized act of 1815 mention a castle named "la Fortiasse". You can't help but feel the sense of the history of Chateauneuf du Pape, when you see the beautiful buildings at Fortia. Since 2016 Sandra Rochel has been the winemaker and essentially the vineyard manager at Chateau Fortia. During which time she oversaw the conversion to certified organic status for a portion of their holdings. She has broad winemaking experience, having made wine in the Rhone and even Hawkes Bay in New Zealand.
