Producer: Choya Vintage: NV Size: 500ml ABV: 15% Country/Region: Japan, Kinki A uniquely sweet and gently tart taste of ume fruit with notes of almond from the pit. Serve straight and slightly chilled or on-the-rocks. Producer Information Umeshu is a traditional Japanese liqueur made from ume fruit. A perfect balance between ume extract and alcohol is achieved by aging the whole fruit, with the stone still inside. The delicious tang of Umeshu comes from citric acid in the fruit, and the refreshing flavour stimulates the appetite. Umeshu also contains malic and succinic acids. Refresh yourself by enjoying a glass of Umeshu when feeling tired. The addition of alcohol to the fruit during production means that the ume flavour can be extracted not only from the flesh and skin but also from the stone. It is this process which gives CHOYA Umeshu its unique fruity bouquet, with notes of almond and marzipan.

On the palate, layers of ripe red fruits are combined with notes of dark chocolate and slight anise leading to an amazingly long finish. Producer Information Dominio del Plata is an Argentinian wine company founded and owned by leading winemaker Susana Balbo, who is known as the Queen of Torrontés, and is credited with first developing this now-familiar aromatic grape. As with many other estates in Argentina, it is also known for its Malbec. The winery is located in Luján de Cuyo, with vineyard plots in various subregions of the Uco Valley. The estate was formed in 1999, by which time Balbo had already amassed more than 20 years' experience as a consultant winemaker. The range of wines is headed by the Nosotros line, which comprises a Malbec, the Francis – 50 percent Malbec, 30 percent Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc and Tannat – and the Sofita cuvée (75 percent Malbec with Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Cabernet Franc). The Susana Balbo Signature series represents a personal selection with a stated emphasis on aromatics, complexity and balance. This tier includes the Brioso red and white (the former a Cabernet Sauvignon-based Bordeaux Blend and the latter a combination of Semillón, Torrontés and Sauvignon Blanc) Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec in dry and late-harvest versions, and both a barrel-fermented and late-harvest Torrontés. A more recent edition to the series is the Paraje Altamira Malbec. The BenMarco range is sourced from more extreme sites and includes Pinot Noir, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Malbec blend: Expresivo. All of the reds see 14-18 months aging in French oak, with 100 percent new wood for Nosotros and Signature, and a mix of new and one year-old oak for BenMarco. Finally, the Crios label features a wide range of monovarietal and blended wines for everyday consumption, inluding a Malbec rosé. The winery mainly ferments the wine in stainless steel tanks, though concrete eggs have been introduced for premium wines.

Producer Information Quinta de la Rosa was one of the pioneers of making and selling table wines and olive oil in addition to port directly from the estate. These products are produced, matured and bottled on the Quinta and not in Vila Nova da Gaia as is the case with other shippers. It can be argued that this helps give our ports a dry and stylish nutty flavour. A combination of the best of the old with the new, treading in granite lagares and using stainless steel and temperature controlled technology, together with careful handling of natural materials (such as oak casks for the table wine and large old tonels for the port), ensures that wines of the highest quality are made. As everything is grown, made and bottled on the estate, Quinta de la Rosa is one of the few true "Single Quintas"; it is not a second brand used by most large shippers for their "off Vintage" port years.

Producer Information Margherita Otto is a new winery located in Monforte d’Alba founded by an American (turned Piemontese!), Alan Manley. Alan grew up in Westchester, NY, and later moved to Colorado where he ran his own restaurant for many years. It was there where he developed a love for wine, especially Barolo. His first visit to the region was back in 1995 and he continued to visit as often as possible in the ensuing years. Eventually he decided to sell his restaurant and move to Barolo with the dream of eventually making his own wine. His moved to the region in 2011 and was lucky to be offered a job helping out Maria Teresa Mascarello in the Bartolo Mascarello winery. He also worked part time for some other well-known producers as well including Luciano Sandrone and Cavallotto. After a few years, he was able to locate and purchase parcels in Monforte d’Alba and Castiglione Falletto. In addition, he was also able to secure a long-term lease on a parcel in Serralunga d’Alba. As a producer just starting out it can be very difficult to get your hands on well-placed vineyards in Barolo but Alan was lucky enough to get access these three parcels. In Monforte d’Alba, his parcel is just outside of the official Ginestra cru at its southwestern edge at high elevation (470-500m). In Castiglione Falletto, his parcel is in the steep, southeast-facing portion Pernanno cru, and in Serralunga d’Alba his site touches the Vigna Rionda cru, though just outside it, at the bottom of the hill. Alan was fortunate to be able to vinify his first vintages in a friend’s cellar. In fact, he made three “trial” vintages (2012-2014) before he decided to commercialize his official debut release in the 2015 vintage. In late 2017, he completed his own Cantina in Monforte D’Alba, above which is located his house where he lives with his lovely Piedmontese wife, Daniella. The cellar is equipped with the best of modern and traditional equipment, including a simple basket press and a few Botti from his favorite...

Chapoutier Vintage: NV Size: 500ml ABV: 16% Varietal: Grenache Country/Region: France, Banyuls Dried fruits, crystallized orange peel and freshly cracked black pepper. Rich layers of dried plum, baking spices and dark chocolate. Producer Information Maison M. Chapoutier is one of the most recognizable – and sizeable – producers in the Rhône Valley. It is known for its wines from both the north and south of the valley, but in particular for its red and white Hermitage wines, made from Syrah and a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne, respectively. The family's history in the Rhône dates back to 1808, but it wasn't until 1879 that Polydor Chapoutier transitioned the family from growing grapes to making and trading wine. In 1988, Michel Chapoutier took the company reins, and a push toward quality saw the Chapoutier label begin to gain international recognition. Michel Chapoutier eschewed the use of traditional, large format chestnut foudres for aging, instead moving toward smaller oak casks with shorter aging periods. He also advocated keeping the wines unfiltered and unfined, and to work with only biodynamically or organically grown fruit across all of the vineyards. From 1996, all M. Chapoutier labels have included braille in honor of Maurice Monier de la Sizeranne, who created a form of modern abbreviated braille, and was the original owner of the Chapoutier vineyard in Hermitage (indeed, "Monier de la Sizeranne" is the name of Chapoutier's top Hermitage wine).

Sappy, sweet orchard fruit and citrus flavors are buffered by tangy acidity, with the spicy note repeating. Deeply pitched but light on its feet, finishing with very good breadth and clarity. Producer Information Los Bermejos is a winery based on the island of Lanzarote, owned and run by the passionate winemaker Ignacio Valdera. Only 125 km from the African coastline, conditions here are extreme. The porous, black volcanic soils have extremely high drainage, lowering the water content of soils that are only nourished by a few inches of rain per year. The winds that blow from the Sahara desert and Atlantic Ocean are so fierce that each vine is planted in small holes or hoyos, and further protected with stone walls. The hoyos also allow the vines to more quickly reach the organic matter located beneath the top layer of solidified lava. Virtually no vegetation can survive such inhospitable soil; the region is more reminiscent of a lunar landscape than the lush traditional image of a vineyard. Not surprisingly, yields are very low, and all vineyard work is meticulously done by hand. Farming is done organically and the winery is in the process of certification. Ignacio occasionally supplements each crop with purchased fruit from growers who share his vision of sustainable viticulture.

Acclaimed wine writer Hugh Johnson teamed up with Ben Howkins and winemaker Peter Vinding-Diers as founders after Johnson found the region to be not meeting its potential. Now, it is one of the most famous producers in the region. The range at the Royal Tokaji Company has everything from a dry Furmint to minute quantities of the luscious – and rare – Essencia. This Essencia can be fermented for up to eight years, resulting in a wine with less than 3 percent alcohol and sugar levels reaching up to 85 percent on any given year. A First Growth Nyulászó vineyard wine is included as well as single-vineyard bottlings from each of the five vineyards the company owns. Royal Tokaji focuses on the grape varieties Furmint, Hárslevelú and Muscat, which are grown in the estate's top vineyards. The Mézes Mály vineyard is classified the highest as a Great First Growth, with Nyulászó, Szt Tamás and Betsek judged First Growths, and Birsalmás a second growth. These vineyards were classified at the end of the 17th Century by Prince Rakoczi of Hungary, well before the 1855 classification of Bordeaux. The vineyards lie at the convergence of two main rivers. It is the presence of these rivers that encourages the early morning mists to flow across the grapes, providing the perfect environment for botrytis to flourish. The vines are approximately 20 years old and have such low yields that during some vintages one vine can yield only one glass of wine. The aszú grapes are picked, crushed and then fermented in large Hungarian oak barrels with natural yeasts.

Producer: Champagne Philippe Glavier Vintage: NV Size: 500ml Varietal: Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir Country/Region: France, Champagne Producer Information Philippe Glavier may be one of the smallest producers in the Côte des Blancs, but size does not diminish value or quality. His are poignant, driven and super-classy blancs de blancs – mini-masterpieces – in a style not dissimilar to the precision and purity seen in Pierre Gimonnet. I should have travelled to Champagne in April, but the world had other ideas. It would have been a week-long immersion in a stream of tastings and festivities organised by various winegrowing groups, known as Le Printemps des Champagnes. Philippe and Véronique Glavier would have been there. Instead, I organised a virtual ‘walk’ through their cuvérie and one-on-one chat with Véronique over Zoom one evening. She is the wife, co-owner and public arm of Champagne Philippe Glavier, named after her husband, a third-generation vigneron from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger in Champagne’s ‘white hillside’, the Côte des Blancs. Véronique comes from neighbouring Cramant, representing thirteen generations of winegrowing. “I never wanted to marry a grower – ever!” smiles Véronique who first met Philippe in 1993 on a ski trip. It’s a story that is not uncommon between winegrowing families in Champagne where love often befalls a chance to build or extend small domaines with preciously inherited vineyards. With little money to speak of, Philippe begged and borrowed to get by until finding his feet. Véronique’s father was one of the most generous, granting Philippe access to his press at night without charge, once he had completed his daily harvest work. The arrangement became his rhythm for years and an opportunity to cut his teeth on something real beyond the tomes of theory absorbed at the Lycée d’Avize. It gave rise to the formation of his own label – Champagne Philippe Glavier – in 1995, and money soon followed. Enough was scraped together to buy a press, “the smallest in Champagne”, muses Véronique, with a capacity of just 2000kg, but at least it could fit into her parent’s garage. Convenient, yes, but it also suited their tiny production of just 4.6 hectares spread across 52 parcels. Small press, big results. Glavier’s champagnes speak loudly of their grand cru origins, imbued with the glory of chardonnay’s chalky freshness and fine finesse. All cuvées are blanc de blancs, with the exception of their rosé for which they source...

It has a red garnet hue with orange reflections. Fresh, sweet and structured with a slightly bitter finish, it is particularly good as an elixir for meditation. Producer Information Damilano Azienda Agricola is an Italian wine producer, located in the La Morra district of Barolo. There is a range of wines within the portfolio, but Damilano is particularly known for its Nebbiolo-based red wines. The flagship is the Cannubi 1752 Riserva, from an old vine plot in the famous Cannubi vineyard. It is fermented for 20 days and left on the skins for a further month, before five years of maturation in large oak vats and a further two years in bottle. The estate comprises 53 hectares (131 acres) of vineyards, including plots in four of the Barolo Cru vineyards which make four single-vineyard wines: Cannubi, Brunate, Cerequio and Liste. In addition, Damilano produces Lecinquevigne, a Barolo from vineyards in five different towns around the region. Beyond Barolo, the range also includes Nebbiolo d'Alba, Barbera d'Alba and Dolcetto d'Alba, Barbera d'Asti, Langhe Arneis, Rosato, Moscato d'Asti, Barolo Chinato and Grappa di Nebbiolo di Barolo. The Damilano family business dates back to 1890 when Giuseppe Borgogno, the great grandfather of the current owners, first began to produce estate wines. The vineyards were then developed further by his son-in-law, Giacomo Damilano. Production today totals around 320,000 bottles per year.
