Producer Information The Doyard family traces their winemaking roots in Champagne back to 1677 when a marriage license of Jean-Baptise Doyard showed “winegrower” as the occupation. Maurice Doyard was the first in the family to make wine in Vertus under the Doyard label in 1927, officially signifying the domaine’s foundation. In 1979, Yannick Doyard took over, turning it into a beacon for precise, vinous, mineral-etched Champagne in the Côtes des Blancs. Today, Yannick’s son Guillaume is at the helm, farming 10 ha of prime vineyards in Vertus and the Grand Cru villages of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Cramant, Oger, Avize and Aÿ. The limestone scree that dominates this vineyard land has brought great diversity to the soils, and consequently, the wines. His grandfather started the domaine in the 1930s. Though he slowly increased the vineyard holdings, he also sold off most of his wine in bulk. It was not until 1960 that Michel’s father, André, began bottling under their own label. Michel joined the domaine in 1976. Today, his son, Guillaume, joins him. While they are far from the only Quenards in Chignin, they are certainly the most well-known—perhaps this is due to the severity of their terrain and the quality of wines it produces. Andrew Jefford writes in his contemporary classic, The New France, “Michel Quenard and his father André are masters of the Bergeron grape, known in the Rhône Valley and elsewhere as Roussanne. They argue it should be limited to the best and steepest local sites where it can ripen fully, like the Coteau de Torméry, giving wines of real texture and perfume as it does so.” (p 122). We think it is one of the most unique and beautiful renditions of Roussanne in the world. Producer Information The Brunel family’s winemaking history reaches back to the 17th century with the purchase of a vineyard plot to the north of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation from the Bishop of Avignon. Numerous generations followed, all working in the vineyards, but it was in 1954 that Lucien Brunel created the name "Les Cailloux" or "The Pebbles" to promote the Domaine’s wine qualities and special geological characteristic of the large oval stones covering his vineyards. Producer Information Bodegas Lustau is a famous Sherry producer in Andalucia and is arguably the most recognized fortified wine producer in the world. It was was founded in 1896 by José Ruiz-Berdejo as an almacenista, which also grew its own vines. Almacenistas generally bought young wine (Ruiz made his own) and matured them in their own soleras, before selling them to larger houses, who would either blend it with older wine, or mature it longer in their larger soleras. It wasn't until the 1950s that Ruiz's son-in-law Emilio Lustau Ortega began bottling and exporting his own wine. Now based in Jerez, Lustau is the only winery that has sites in all three cities of the Sherry triangle: Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Lustau buys fruit from vineyards, while also maintaining two of its own. The first is the Montegilillo vineyard, which is on the white limestone albariza soil local to the region. The second is the Las Cruces vineyard, which is on sandy coastal soils. Lustau now produces a range of Sherry, but achieves the most recognition for its Almacenista collection. Continuing the tradition, the collection is series of single offerings from smaller producers that Lustau bottles and distributes. Best known for its Châteauneuf-du-Pape bottlings, it also produces Côtes du Rhône and IGP Vaucluse wines. The Brunel family acquired their first vineyard in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the 1600s, but it wasn't until 1954 that the domaine became known as Les Cailloux. The overall domaine name has changed again to reflect expansion beyond that region, though the Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe wines are continue to be labelled most prominently as Les Cailloux. Fabrice Brunel inherited the management of Domaine les Cailloux in 2012, and today oversees 21 hectares (52 acres) of cultivated vineyard in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, as well as 40ha (100 acres) in the Côtes du Rhône winemaking zone, and 30ha (74 acres) of land that is dedicated to the production of IGP Vaucluse wines. The Les Cailloux Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine is a blend dominated by Grenache (70 percent), with smaller quantities of Mourvèdre (17 percent), Syrah (10 percent) and Cinsaut (3 percent). The wine is made from vines that have an average age of 60 years old, and are planted in a combination of gravel, clay and limestone soils. The grapes are harvested by hand and oak is only used sparingly. Each vineyard plot is vinified separately and then blended approximately 15 to 18 months after harvest in a mix of concrete vats and barrels. Cuvée Centenaire is made in exceptional vintages from a selection of vines with an average age over 125 years. It is a 90:10 combination of Grenache and Syrah. The soils for these plots have more clay. Grenache is also the largest component in Cailloux's range of Côte du Rhône and IGP Vaucluse red wines.
