Producer Information Black Ridge Vineyards is a new boutique winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains, three miles outside the town of Los Gatos off Highway 17. 21 acres of vineyards have been planted on the 80-acre estate which sits just above the Lexington Reservoir. The property has been through several transformations, beginning as a vineyard during the mid-1800s, then a prune tree farm during Prohibition, and later a Christmas tree farm. Cheryl and Jim Landis along with Fred Faltersack, formed a partnership and purchased the property in 1999. With the re-planting of grapes in 2002, the land has come full-circle. Multiple varieties are farmed including Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Viognier, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. Winegrower Ruben Balderas oversees the vineyards. Director of Operations and co-winemaker along with Bill Brosseau, Ashley Dubois, informed me that their 2006 Pinot Noir, released March 1, 2008, is their second commercial wine. The winery plans to specialize in Pinot Noir, Viognier, and a “San Andreas Red” Bordeaux-style blend (the San Andreas fault runs through one of the upper vineyards). I have not visited, but this beautiful setting looks very appealing. One of the advantages of wine club membership is going to wine club events where Landis' extensive classic car collection is often on display.

Coming from high-elevation estate vineyards in Alexander Valley, especially the Jimtown Vineyard, the wine is beautiful, with fabulous concentration and purity, a dense purple color, a gorgeous blueberry and blackberry fruit nose, with licorice, camphor and graphite. The wine is full-bodied and opulent with wonderfully integrated, toasty new oak. Layered and rich, the wine can be drunk now or cellared for up to another 20-25 years. It is best known for its range of single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines. Stonestreet was founded by Jess Jackson in 1989, after the purchased of the Zellerbach winery. Jackson was the founder of the major distributor Jackson Family Wines and was half of the namesake for the brand Kendall-Jackson. The estate vineyards comprise roughly 400 hectares (1000 acres) on a undulating property within the foothills of the Mayacamas mountains. Vineyards are planted across the property and range in elevation from 400 to 2400 feet (120-730m) above sea level. The significant difference in elevations, vine-spacing, and various aspects and exposures of the plots mean the estate has an array of mesoclimates. Producer Information Dalla Valle Vineyards is a Napa Valley producer located on a sunny hillside terrace of fractured volcanic rock in Oakville, 400ft(120m) above the Silverado Trail. It is particularly known for its flagship Maya cuvée, which is one of the most prestigious of all Californian wines. The 1992, 2002, 2013 and 2016 wines have all received 100-point scores from The Wine Advocate publication. The estate was founded in 1986 (although it was purchased in 1982) by former scuba diver and diving equipment entrepreneur Gustav Dalla Valle and his wife Naoko. Its wines are highly sought-after and Bryant is considered to be one of California's cult wineries, producing small quantities of expensive wine since its first vintage in 1992. Don and Bettina Bryant bought the 13 acre (5.3 hectare) property in the late 1980s, and planted it to Cabernet Sauvignon. Since the inaugural release, Bryant Family has produced powerful Cabernet Sauvignon with excellent aging potential. The Bryants hired some of Napa's best talents.
