Beronia wines are known to be a good match for food, and this one is no exception when paired with lamb chops, or some spicy stews. Producer Information Bodegas Beronia is a Spanish wine producer, founded in 1973 in Rioja. It is located in the Rioja Alta subregion and is surrounded by 25 hectares (61 acres) of estate vineyards, supplemented by almost 900ha (2223 acres) of grower vineyards from around the region. Tempranillo dominates the vineyards, although Beronia also has plantings of Graciano, Garnacha and Viura. A majority of the wines produced by Beronia fall under the Rioja DOCa title. As well as making several entry-level varietal and Crianza wines, there are also Reserva and Gran Reserva wines, and a selection of top cuvées aged for an extended period in oak and only released in top years: the 198 Barricas Reserva, Beronia IIIac and the Beronia Viñas Viejas. Oak aging is key at Beronia. Barrels are sourced from forests in Oregon and the American Midwest, as well as from Allier and Limousin in France. New and old oak are used, depending on the wine, and Beronia was the first to create a "mixed" barrel, made from American staves and French tops. Following their time in oak, Beronia's wines are typically aged in bottle for a period before they are released. Beronia's vineyards are planted on soils of sand, sediment and clay and are poor in organic materials. The vines are a mixture of pre-phylloxera plantings and newer vines planted in 2011. There are some older vines among Beronia's grower vineyards as well – these are used to create the Beronia Viñas Viejas wine.

López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Ratings: WA 92 JS 93 Vintage: 2019 Size: 750ml ABV: 13.5% Varietal: Rioja Red Blend Country/Region: Spain, Rioja Alta A vibrant Rioja from cult producer López de Heredia. It's made from a blend of 70% tempranillo, 20% garnacha and 5% each graciano and mazuelo (aka carignan), and aged in used American oak barrels. It's packed full of delicate savoury notes and a complexity that suggests greater maturity than a normal crianza. Silky and full of depth, this is a wine that will stand up to all things spicy and meaty. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2014 Viña Cubillo Tinto Crianza is a textbook vintage with some aromatic development, notes of fresh blood and some grainy tannins, perhaps less polished than previous vintages, lively and concentrated, a bit harsh. 2014 was a very rainy vintage. This is usually a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho and 5% each Graciano and Mazuelo matured in well-seasoned, neutral American oak barrels for three years. James Suckling: An earthy, well-aged Rioja with complex aromas of dried oranges, savory dried plums, mushrooms, tobacco and wet leaves. Distinctively zesty with bright, citrusy fruit on the medium-bodied palate, rounded by firm, juicy tannins. Quite a long, outstanding entry-level red from this traditional producer. Very drinkable now, but will also hold. Producer Information R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia is a Rioja producer that is widely regarded as one of the world's greatest wine estates. It was founded in 1877, and is well known for its traditional winemaking approach. It is particularly associated with its Tempranillo-based wines from the Tondonia vineyard, to the extent that this now forms part of the company name. The Tondonia vineyard extends for over 100 hectares (250 acres) in a picturesque site next to the Ebro river. The soil is made up of alluvial clay with a high limestone content, which has proved an excellent terroir for the Tempranillo and Garnacha vines that are planted there. Tondonia provides the grapes for López de Heredia's top wines, both red and white. The flagship wine from the company is the dry, vanilla-laden López de Heredia Gran Reserva. It is predominantly Tempranillo with small amounts of Garnacha and Mazuelo, and sees ten years aging in barrel before release. The Reserva, which adds a little Graciano to...

Producer: Marqués de Cáceres Vintage: 2019 Size: 750ml ABV: 14% Varietal: Tempranillo Country/Region: Spain, Rioja The palate is an explosion of delicate flavors, nice and delightful mouthfeel. Quite delicate and smooth texture on the long finish. Producer Information Marqués de Cáceres is a sizeable wine producer located in the Spanish town of Cenicero, with vineyards in the sub-regions of Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. The vineyards are planted mainly to the red variety Tempranillo and produce a range of wines under the Rioja DOCa appellation, including white wines from predominantly Viura grapes. More than half of production is exported, and Marqués de Cáceres wines are present in more than 120 countries. The estate was founded in 1970 by Enrique Forner, who came from a family that had been involved in the wine industry for much of the 20th Century. Forner was one of the first in Rioja to introduce the use of French oak barrels for aging. The winery is still family-owned and operated, and is currently managed by Cristina Forner, Enrique's daughter. The winery has over 30,000 French and American oak barrels ranging in toast levels to age different wines. Oak aging is a fundamental process at Marqués de Cáceres, and the amount of time a wine spends in oak depends on vintage and type, whether it be crianza, reserva, or gran reserva. Following barrel aging, the wines are further aged in bottle before their release. Marqués de Cáceres is known for its numerous Rioja bottlings, but also produces two quality-driven, higher price-point red wines named Gaudium and MC. Beyond Rioja, Marqués de Cáceres also has a bodega in the Rueda DO, producing wines from the regional flagship variety, Verdejo, although this is often paried with smaller amounts of Sauvignon Blanc and Viura. The company also makes an Albariño from Rias Baixas under the Deusa Nai label, and a sparkling white Cava made in the Penedès region to the southeast.

Flavors of dark berries fill the palate, alongside substantial tannins and notes of almond toffee, coffee bean and dark chocolate that evaporate into a lasting finish. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The grapes fermented in stainless steel with selected yeasts, and the wine matured in new French barriques for 15 months. This was a very powerful year, warm and dry, that delivered concentrated wines. This one is the only one of the four wines that I tasted that feels a bit oaky; the élevage was a little longer because of the powerful year and included some new oak and still all 225-liter ones It has clout and a smoky, meaty nose that is quite mainstream, modern and spicy. The palate is medium to full-bodied and reveals abundant, slightly dusty tannins. James Suckling: Seductively spicy nose of spiced plums, nutmeg, peppercorns and coconut. Full-bodied with creamy, velvety tannins. Rich and delicious. All integrated and polished. Long. 100% tempranillo. Drink or hold. Producer Information Bela is a homage to the founders of CVNE expressed through an exceptional winery and vineyards. All this makes it a unique place for the production and ageing of the most special Ribera del Duero wines. Bela was founded in 2017 in Villalba de Duero, when CVNE embarked on a new venture in Ribera del Duero, focusing on estate vineyards located in several villages within the region. Drink it with summery salads and grilled seafood. Producer Information The first time you set your eyes on the hills of Côte Rôtie, it is impossible not be overwhelmed with their beauty. The cliff-like granite hillsides seem to have burst from the Earth with vigor and violence. Only the truly dedicated would decide to make their living there. No tractor on Earth can plow these vineyards – everything has to be painstakingly done by hand. This is the place that Domaine Clusel-Roch calls home. Based in Verenay, the northernmost village in Côte Rôtie, this tiny 3.5 hectare domaine is run by Gilbert Clusel, his wife Brigit, and their son Guillaume. Gilbert’s grandfather planted the foundation of the winery in 1935, the vineyard now known as ‘Les Grandes-Places’, using a low yielding clone of Syrah called Serine. All subsequent plantings have been selection massale from that vineyard, a rarity in the region as higher yielding material became more prevalent. The Clusel family was also early believers in the advantages of organic farming, and would become pioneers of the movement within the region as they converted fully in 1990.

Reviews: James Suckling: Sweet blackberry, blueberry and bark aromas follow through to a full body with a compact palate of medium, round and chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Drinkable now, but better with a year of bottle age. The company also makes an Albariño from Rias Baixas under the Deusa Nai label, and a sparkling white Cava...

Well developed tannins. Bit bitter. Pretty long finish. Producer Information Grandes Vinos Y Viñedos (often referred to simply as Grandes Vinos) is a wine producer based in the town of Cariñena in the Cariñena region of northeast Spain, just southwest of the city of Zaragoza. The company produces a large range of wines but is best-known for the Carinena (Carignan) and Garnacha (Grenache) grape varieties. The company was established in 1997 when a number of regional cooperatives and grapegrower associations (Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Villanueva de Huerva, San Roque de Alfamén, San José de Aguarón, San Bernabé de Cosuenda and the Sociedad Agraria de Transformación de Cariñena) combined to form the Grandes Vinos Y Viñedos cooperative. The company counts around 700 grapegrowers from the Cariñena region, covering around 4500 hectares (11,000 acres) with a range of grape varieties. Although the the Cariñena grape is synonymous with the region, it is only the fifth most-grown variety across the winery holdings. Production is predominantly red with Garnacha and Tempranillo taking the lion's share and accounting for over half of production. The remainder is covered by the Spanish white Macabeo the more "international" reds of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. Small amounts of Chardonnay, Garnacha Blanca, Muscat of Alexandria, Juan Ibañez and Sauvignon Blanc are also produced. A number of ranges are made by the winery including the Anayón, Corona de Aragón, Monasterio de las Viñas, 3C, Beso de Vino, El Circo, Hoy, 49 Million and Iglup brands. Most wines are varietally labeled and a number of Cavas are also made under the Ramiro II label (the 49 Million range also covers sparkling wines).

López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Vintage: 2008 Size: 750ml ABV: 12.5% Varietal: Macabeo Country/Region: Spain, Rioja Alta It presents itself with great elegance and charm with precise aromas, imposing but very fine tannins and great length. The Reserva, which adds a little Graciano to the blend, only receives six years. The two nutty, perfumed Viña Tondonia white wines – a Gran Reserva and a Reserva – have the same respective time in oak as the red wines, and are made from Viura with a small amount of Malvasia. An interesting innovation from Tondonia is the Gran Reserva Rosado, which is one of the few rosés in the world released after such long aging (four and a half years) in barrel. R. López de Heredia owns three other vineyards in the Rioja Alta region: Viñas Cubillo, Bosconia and Zaconia. The first two make single-vineyard red wines, while the Zaconia vineyard is planted with white varieties and previously supplied dry wines under that banner, and dessert wines labelled Sauternia. Nowadays, it is the source of the Viña Gravonia oak-aged white made from Viura. The sprawling winery complex neighboring La Rioja Alta in the centre of Haro is the oldest in the town, and one of the first wineries in the entire region. Wines are made in a range of old oak vats of varying size and wood origin, and aged in a famous network of dark, moldy cellars with evocative names such as El...

Lopez de Heredia Rioja White Vina Gravonia Crianza is a slightly developed pale gold color. Fresh and aromatic. Complex and developed. A fruity, complex, developed, and very fine wine. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2013 Viña Gravonia Blanco comes from a rainy, cool and challenging vintage when the grapes didn't reach the perfect ripeness the 2012 (that I tasted next to it) displayed. It has citrus notes (orange peel, yuzu) and an herbal twist, balsamic with the unmistakably white López de Heredia aroma of mushrooms that you smell as soon as you enter their ancient cellars. It's quite pale, and the palate is sharp and austere, quite light but with the pungent flavors and a long and tasty finish. This is a relatively simple wine, especially when compared with the others. 18,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2018 after four years in American barrels. James Suckling: Dried apple, lemon rind, walnut, praline, dried honeysuckle and clove on the nose. Medium-bodied with tangy acidity. Bright and vibrant feel, balancing the rich, waxy layers of dried fruit and spice. Saline undertones. Some nougat and yogurt, too. Long. Drink now or hold. Producer Information It all started in the middle of the nineteenth century when French negociants visited the Rioja region to find alternative sources of quality grapes to transform into wine, since the phylloxera epidemic had decimated their vineyards. Our founder, Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, a knowledgeable and enthusiastic student in the art of wine making, followed closely in their footsteps.Don Rafael fell in love with the region and especially the area around Haro, the mythical capital of the Rioja Alta region. He observed that there was a magical combination of soil and climate that would offer the perfect environment for producing wine that would eventually become world famous. Around 1877 he began the design and construction of the complex that is today known as the López de Heredia bodega (winery), the oldest in Haro and one of the first three houses in the Rioja region.

Producer Information Torre de Ona was forged in 1995, when La Rioja Alta, S.A. led this exciting project with the aim of making an excellent quality wine incorporating all the personality of the best vine plots in the prestigious Rioja Alavesa area. A unique location that they were convinced provided clear potential for making a great modern wine, capable of transmitting – as with the great "chateaux" – the exclusive characteristics of a privileged estate. Since then, and always focused on the continual improvement in the wine, Torre de Ona has made important changes to the vineyards and winery. But it has been in recent years, more specifically since 2005, that they started to pay very special attention to the different plots that make up the estate, and the separate production and maturing of each sub-plot, evaluating the soil and determining where the best quality grapes grow, only then collecting harvests that meet the quality standards for an important international wine. This is how they made the Torre de Ona, Finca San Martín and Club de Cosecheros (Harvester's Club) wines. They have taken a big step forward. But they will not rest there. They constantly strive for excellence and are convinced that for the Torre de Ona winery, the best has yet to come.

Reviews: Wine Advocate: I was quite impressed by the 2012 Viña Cubillo Tinto Crianza, a classical Rioja that is nicely crafted, with less aging in barrel than the rest of reds and therefore with more fruit character and less López de Heredia signature. This was born as a red for tapas, a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho and 5% each Graciano and Mazuelo with 13.5% alcohol. It matured in well-seasoned American oak barrels for three years. It has ripe fruit (black rather than red) without excess and a pinch of spices and a twist of oak. 94,500 bottles produced. There are seven lots of this. I tasted a bottled that was filled in May 2018. James Suckling: Wonderful aromas of mushrooms, bark, cigar tobacco and plums with just a hint of citrus. It is particularly known for its flagship Reserva and Gran Reserva wines of the same name. The Remírez de Ganuza is the flagship wine of the portfolio, produced from Tempranillo and complimented with Graciano, Viura and Malvasia. Grape bunches are sorted and seperated into shoulder and tips prior to fermentation which is an incredibly labour intensive process. It is fermented in both stainless steel and French oak vats prior to 26 months of barrel-aging. Producer: Grupo Estevez Vintage: NV Size: 750ml ABV: 17% Varietal: Pedro Ximenez Country/Region: Spain, Fino Sherry An intense color of mahogany with deep aromas of dried fruits (figs and raisins) and subtle notes of chocolate and coffee. The palate is very smooth and velvety with prune notes and a very long finish. Producer Information The origins of the Jose Estevez S.A wine cellars (Bodegas) are from the Jose Lena Rendon and Co. enterprise, which was established in 1809 for ageing Sherry and Brandy. In 1894, Mr. Ruiz, the principal shareholder, changed the name of the company to his own: Felix Ruiz and Ruiz, S.A. At this time, the business reached as far as Northern Europe and South America. Since 1974 the Estevez family has managed the entire company and in 1984 the name of the company was changed to Jose Estevez S.A. In keeping with the traditions of a family business, great importance has been given to the care of the ageing of the wines. In 1982, Jose Estevez de los Reyes bought a large proportion of shares in the Marques del Real Tesoro bodega, taking over the whole company in 1985, injecting financial and professional support. By 1989 the Estevez family held a 95% share of the company. The same year, 1989, the Estevez family drew up a plan to merge the two companies, JOSE ESTEVEZ, S.A. and MARQUES DEL REAL TESORO, S.A., investing in a "brand new" facility, the actual headquarters. These buildings include the new offices, ageing cellars, bottling plant, refrigeration plant, warehouses, laboratories and controlled fermentation plants. This new structure reinforces the new Bodegas José Estévez, S.A., equipped with the most modern machinery and technology in Spain. Following this philosophy of expansion, in May 1993, the international brand of Fino wine "Tio Mateo", is acquired, as well as its complete "Solera". One of the oldest wineries in Jerez, A.R. VALDESPINO, is acquired in September 1999; and in 2007, the Estévez family takes control of "Hijos de Rainera Pérez Marín y M. Gil Luque", proprietors of the well-known Manzanilla "La Guita", from Sanlucar de Barrameda, which is the market leader in Spain.

The rest of the wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels (new, 1 or 2 years old) to achieve a velvety touch. Producer Information At the beginning of 3rd millennium, the magnificent estate of Perales de Valdueza, just above Mérida, was completely restored by the family Alvarez de Toledo. This family has owned this estate since 1624; it comprises some thousands of hectares of which 40 are under vines. It is one of the most famous families in Spain and its first mentions in the archives go back to 1085. The Alvarezes de Toledo were amongst the richest land owners of the kingdom at the time of the Reyes Católicos (1474-1504) and received the titles of Duke of Alba and Marquess of Valdueza. The first title is only famous in the Low Countries. Anyway, this family was often part of history. Today’s Marquess of Valdueza is set on giving back its lustre to the property. He called back from London his son Fadrique, so that he takes the estate in his hands and improve the quality of the production. His first mission was to renovate the olive orchard. Then followed the vines; in two years - 2002 and 2003, it was completely replanted. His first wine, Marqués de Valdueza Etiqueta Azul 2006, was launched on the market in 2008. Since then, two other cuvées have been added to the range, the Valdueza and the Marqués de Valdueza Etiqueta Roja.
