This feels round, with citrusy acidity cutting into the body. Basic grapefruit and apricot flavors are friendly, while this is a touch foamy on the finish. Producer Information In an age of large, mass produced cava brands, Vilarnau stands out in polar opposition—small, artisanal, hand crafted. All wine, including the base wine, is made by Vilarnau. Many larger houses purchase base wine and then undergo secondary fermentation. The Vilarnau cavas date from 1949 and were located in the town center of Sant Sadurni D’Anoia. Vilarnau has been part of the Gonzalez Byass group since 1982. The vineyards where the winery is currently located were bought in 1990 and in 2003 the construction of the winery was started, being inaugurated in 2005. The name comes from the old Vilarnau castle which can be found on the banks of the river Anoia and which formed part of the Subirats castle, where the vineyards can be found today The Vilarnau estate is situated 6km outside of Sant Sadurni D’Anoia in the highest point of the area Espiells, 200m above sea level. High altitudes contribute to a slower maturation of the grape, which produces wines with higher acidity contributing to a more balanced ageing. The Vilarnau estate includes 20 hectares of planted vineyards and the winery manages over 100 hectares on long term contracts. Precision viticulture is applied in all vineyards in which every vine is treated individually to achieve an optimum balance of leaves, bunches and water.

On the palate it is very elegant, rich and full-bodied. Producer Information Friexenet is a large Spanish producer based in Penedès famed for making Cava, with more than a century of history. It is owned and run by the Ferrer family, who have 16 wine labels in major winemaking regions all over the world. Freixenet's history began in 1861 when Francesc Sala Ferrés began making wine and exporting significant quantities to countries in the mainly Spanish-speaking countries of North and South America. In 1889, the winery began to shift its production from still wines to sparkling and, in 1914, Freixenet officially took form. Exports were a feature of the winery's operations early on and, by the 1930s, an office had been established in the United States. Freixenet now makes over 1.5 million cases annually and exports to 100 countries. The label exclusively makes sparkling wine with the majority being from the classic Cava trio of Macebeo, Xarel-lo and Parellada. Cordon Negro is the flagship wine and is bottled in now famously recognizable frosted black glass. Many of the wines are offered in multiple degrees of sweetness.

The clean nose evolves with a smooth, voluminous and fruity texture, pleasant freshness and fine bubbles. Producer Information Raventós i Blanc is a historic Spanish winery, credited with having one of the longest continuous records of wine production in the world. The estate has belonged to the Raventós family since 1497 and today, is farmed by the 21st generation. The estate is located in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, Catalonia, in the heart of the Cava sparkling wine region. The Raventós i Blanc wine portfolio is exclusively Cava wine from the classic grape trio of Xarel-lo, Macabeo, and Parellada. The first documentation of grape cultivation at the 300-acre (121-hectare) estate dates back to 1497. At this time, the vineyards, an expansive lake, and the surrounding woodlands were known as the Can Codorníu where the Codorníu family grew grapes for both commercial purposes and personal consumption. Heir Maria Anna Codorníu married Miquel Raventós in 1681 and the estate was renamed accordingly. The first traditional sparkling wine of Spain was produced from the estate in 1872 by Josep Raventós I Fatjó, pitching the company into notoriety. By the late 1880s, the estate was planted with the Cava classic varieties Xarel-lo, Macabeo, and Parellada but it wasn't until 1977 that the Raventós i Blanc winery was constructed. Josep Maria Raventós i Blanc was responsible for this expansion of the estate and is credited as one of the creators of the Cava DO. In November 2012, the family decided to pivot away from the generic Cava DO and create a new Designation of Origin - Conca del Riu Anoia entirely based upon the unique microclimate of the estate. The DO is centered around the River Anoia Basin between the Catalan Pre-Coastal and Coastal Ranges. The microclimate of the estate is defined by the proximity to the Catalan coast. The diurnal temperature variation is minimized with mild winters and hot, dry summers. The Catalan Coastal Range protects the vines from excess humidity whilst the Montserrat and Serra d'en Compte protect the vines from cold prevailing wind from the...

Complex notes of yellow apple, minerality, strawberry, white cherry, and citrus. Dry on the palate with medium acidity. Producer Information Northwest of Barcelona, in the Anoia Valley countryside, surrounded by the Sierra of Montserrat Mountains, is a distinguished family vineyard dating back five hundred years, where some of the finest, most innovative and most inspiring Spanish wines have been cultivated: the Raventós estate. Manuel Raventós, 20th generation winemaker in this area, created in 1986 the first estate-bottled and estate-produced sparkling wine in Spain with the first vintage of Raventós i Blanc. An estate where since 1497 the same family has been working– probably one of the longest-documented viticultural family traditions in the world. Manuel’s personal selections of the best wines from each vintage were the beginning of his series of Manuel Raventós Personal Oenotheque 1986, 1998, 1999, 2000… Following his father and his grandfather’s dream, Pepe Raventós, the 21st generation, joined Raventós i Blanc with the aim to pursue excellence in every detail of the winery. Pepe’s own spirit of innovation and perfectionism inspired him to create a world-class sparkling wine unlike any other- one made distinct by its minerality. Having worked with world-renowned winemakers Pepe realized in 2005 that a small portion of the family vineyard, Clos del Serral, was ideally suited to create an exceptional sparkling wine. With this special opportunity, Pepe sought to make the most of it, working this plot as a most precious garden. Bringing back together man, earth, and animal, Pepe returned to the origins of vinification with a contemporary vision. The result is Mas del Serral, a premium sparkling wine prepared to claim its place alongside the world’s finest champagnes. In 1872 the Raventós family brought Champagne to Spain. Today, Pepe Raventós is bringing Mas del Serral back to the world.

Producer: Marqués de Riscal Vintage: 2021 Size: 750ml ABV: 13.5% Varietal: Rose Blend Country/Region: Spain, Rioja This medium-blush-colored wine has a nose of green apple, cherry and a hint of dried mint. It is full in the mouth, offering flavors of peach, pomegranate, eucalyptus and white chocolate that wend their way towards an orange-zest finish. Producer Information Marqués de Riscal is one of Rioja's oldest and most famous wine estates. It makes a range of traditional-style Rioja wines made predominantly from Tempranillo, as well as a white wine from Rueda. Nowadays, the estate is as famous for the distinctive, Frank Gehry-designed hotel that forms part of the estate as it is for its wines. The company was founded in 1858 by the diplomat Camilo Hurtado de Amézega, the Marqués de Riscal. He had been living in Bordeaux and decided to bring French winemaking techniques back to his estate in Elciego. His wines became so popular that wire was stretched over the bottles to combat forgery, a feature that remains on many Rioja wines today. Over 150 years later, Marqués de Riscal is one of the oldest bodega of the Rioja appellation. The Marqués de Riscal estate covers around 500 hectares (1235 acres) of vineyards planted to Tempranillo, Graciano, Cabernet Sauvignon and Mazuelo. These are planted in the general vicinity of Elciego and generally sit on chalky clay terraces formed by the Ebro river. In addition to this, a further 985 ha (2430 acres) are managed under contract. The elegant, floral Reserva is the flagship in terms of production – around 5 million bottles are produced a year. It is aged for around two years in American oak, and represents a classic Rioja style. On the other hand, the more modern Baron de Chirel wine is aged in French oak, and is unusual for its proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, which is permitted at Riscal for historical reasons. Finca Torreia, introduced in 2006, is the 'modern style' deluxe cuvée in the portfolio, although it emphasises elegance over super-ripe fruit. In the 1970s the company expanded its holdings to Rueda, a region 170 miles (275km) southeast of Rioja. Riscal make four wines in the DO, and have become the largest grower in the appellation with 135ha (333 acres) of Verdejo and 70ha (173 acres) of Sauvignon...

The soil is made up of alluvial clay with a high limestone content, which has proved an excellent terroir for the Tempranillo and Garnacha vines that are planted there. Tondonia provides the grapes for López de Heredia's top wines, both red and white. The flagship wine from the company is the dry, vanilla-laden López de Heredia Gran Reserva. It is predominantly Tempranillo with small amounts of Garnacha and Mazuelo, and sees ten years aging in barrel before release. The Reserva, which adds a little Graciano to the blend, only receives six years. The two nutty, perfumed Viña Tondonia white wines – a Gran Reserva and a Reserva – have the same respective time in oak as the red wines, and are made from Viura with a small amount of Malvasia. An interesting innovation from Tondonia is the Gran Reserva Rosado, which is one of the few rosés in the world released after such long aging (four and a half years) in barrel. R. López de Heredia owns three other vineyards in the Rioja Alta region: Viñas Cubillo, Bosconia and Zaconia. The first two make single-vineyard red wines, while the Zaconia vineyard is planted with white varieties and previously supplied dry wines under that banner, and dessert wines labelled Sauternia. Nowadays, it is the source of the Viña Gravonia oak-aged white made from Viura.

Drink it with summery salads and grilled seafood. Producer Information The first time you set your eyes on the hills of Côte Rôtie, it is impossible not be overwhelmed with their beauty. The cliff-like granite hillsides seem to have burst from the Earth with vigor and violence. Only the truly dedicated would decide to make their living there. No tractor on Earth can plow these vineyards – everything has to be painstakingly done by hand. This is the place that Domaine Clusel-Roch calls home. Based in Verenay, the northernmost village in Côte Rôtie, this tiny 3.5 hectare domaine is run by Gilbert Clusel, his wife Brigit, and their son Guillaume. Gilbert’s grandfather planted the foundation of the winery in 1935, the vineyard now known as ‘Les Grandes-Places’, using a low yielding clone of Syrah called Serine. All subsequent plantings have been selection massale from that vineyard, a rarity in the region as higher yielding material became more prevalent. The Clusel family was also early believers in the advantages of organic farming, and would become pioneers of the movement within the region as they converted fully in 1990.

Producer: López de Heredia Ratings: WA 96 VN 94 Vintage: 2010 Size: 750ml ABV: 13% Varietal: Grenache Country/Region: Spain, Rioja This wine is the only Gran Reserva rosé in the entire DOCa. Rioja. It is only made in vintages of excellent quality, and in fact it is expected that between the 2013 and 2017 vintages we will not be able to enjoy it . It is a very special rosé, with notes of cinnamon, dried rose petals and almonds on the nose and a sharp acidity on the palate . The 2010 vintage, classified as excellent in Rioja, is presented in this wine more austere than previous ones, but in return it will have a longer aging potential. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2010 Viña Tondonia Rosado Gran Reserva was hitting on all cylinders. It was produced with 60% Garnacho (they use the masculine of the name here), 30% Tempranillo and 10% white Viura from vines averaging 91 years of age. Like all the wines, it fermented with indigenous yeasts (they have never used selected yeasts) in the 142 oak vats they have used since the beginning and then matured in old American oak barrels for four years. There is tons of complexity and nuance here; it's super elegant and layered, and as the wine sat in the glass, it developed more and more complex aromas, a subtle combination of balsam, red acid berries, a hint of medicine, fennel and wet chalk, a diesel-like touch, old wood and mushroom (beetroot?), licorice and yellow flowers, sweet spices... There's a lot more of everything. It's clean and crystalline, fresh and long, with terrific balance and depth. This has to be the finest rosado of recent times... 25,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2016. Vinous: Copper-tinted orange color. A wild, expansive bouquet displays an array of red fruit and floral qualities, along with hints of baking spices, vanilla, orange pith and toasted nuts. Stains the palate with gently sweet strawberry, tangerine, hazelnut pastry and candied rose flavors that are firmed by a spine of juicy acidity. Shows excellent depth as well as energy and finishes extremely long and silky, with resonating florality and a sappy red berry quality. Producer Information López de Heredia is one of the historic wineries in La Rioja. Founded in 1877, the winery, renowned for its...

Producer: Marqués de Cáceres Vintage: 2016 Size: 750ml ABV: 14% Varietal: Rioja Red Blend Country/Region: Spain, Rioja A radiant red Rioja from Marqués de Cáceres, produced from a core of Tempranillo grapes, hand-harvested in 2016. After fermentation, the wine is treated to 15 months in French oak barrels, imparting a rich, silky texture and tannic, spicy depth. Ideal for enjoying with roast meats and stews. Producer Information Marqués de Cáceres is a sizeable wine producer located in the Spanish town of Cenicero, with vineyards in the sub-regions of Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. The vineyards are planted mainly to the red variety Tempranillo and produce a range of wines under the Rioja DOCa appellation, including white wines from predominantly Viura grapes. More than half of production is exported, and Marqués de Cáceres wines are present in more than 120 countries. The estate was founded in 1970 by Enrique Forner, who came from a family that had been involved in the wine industry for much of the 20th Century. Forner was one of the first in Rioja to introduce the use of French oak barrels for aging. The winery is still family-owned and operated, and is currently managed by Cristina Forner, Enrique's daughter. The winery has over 30,000 French and American oak barrels ranging in toast levels to age different wines. Oak aging is a fundamental process at Marqués de Cáceres, and the amount of time a wine spends in oak depends on vintage and type, whether it be crianza, reserva, or gran reserva. Following barrel aging, the wines are further aged in bottle before their release. Marqués de Cáceres is known for its numerous Rioja bottlings, but also produces two quality-driven, higher price-point red wines named Gaudium and MC. Beyond Rioja, Marqués de Cáceres also has a bodega in the Rueda DO, producing wines from the regional flagship variety, Verdejo, although this is often paried with smaller amounts of Sauvignon Blanc and Viura. The company also makes an Albariño from Rias Baixas under the Deusa Nai label, and a sparkling white Cava made in the Penedès region to the southeast.

The palate is very smooth and velvety with prune notes and a very long finish. Producer Information The origins of the Jose Estevez S.A wine cellars (Bodegas) are from the Jose Lena Rendon and Co. enterprise, which was established in 1809 for ageing Sherry and Brandy. In 1894, Mr. Ruiz, the principal shareholder, changed the name of the company to his own: Felix Ruiz and Ruiz, S.A. At this time, the business reached as far as Northern Europe and South America. Since 1974 the Estevez family has managed the entire company and in 1984 the name of the company was changed to Jose Estevez S.A. In keeping with the traditions of a family business, great importance has been given to the care of the ageing of the wines. In 1982, Jose Estevez de los Reyes bought a large proportion of shares in the Marques del Real Tesoro bodega, taking over the whole company in 1985, injecting financial and professional support. By 1989 the Estevez family held a 95% share of the company. The same year, 1989, the Estevez family drew up a plan to merge the two companies, JOSE ESTEVEZ, S.A. and MARQUES DEL REAL TESORO, S.A., investing in a "brand new" facility, the actual headquarters. These buildings include the new offices, ageing cellars, bottling plant, refrigeration plant, warehouses, laboratories and controlled fermentation plants. This new structure reinforces the new Bodegas José Estévez, S.A., equipped with the most modern machinery and technology in Spain. Following this philosophy of expansion, in May 1993, the international brand of Fino wine "Tio Mateo", is acquired, as well as its complete "Solera". One of the oldest wineries in Jerez, A.R. VALDESPINO, is acquired in September 1999; and in 2007, the Estévez family takes control of "Hijos de Rainera Pérez Marín y M. Producer: Lopez de Heredia Ratings: WA 96+ JS 97 Vintage: 2012 Size: 750ml ABV: 13% Varietal: Garnacho, Tempranillo, Viura Country/Region: Spain, Rioja The color of the Vina Tondonia Gran Reserva Rose is an onion skin color. The aromas are fresh and persistent. Smooth and fresh on the palate with body and complexity. Reviews: Wine Advocate: I love the rosé 2012 Viña Tondonia Rosado Gran Reserva, perhaps the finest vintage (together with the 2010) of the modern releases produced again since 2008. It's a textbook example of this unusual rosé a blend of 60% Garnacho (they use the masculine form of the name of the grape), 30% Tempranillo and 10% Viura that matured in American oak barrels for four years, during which time the wine acquired an orange color and a nutty nose with notes of candied orange peel, mushroom and forest floor. It's only 12.5% alcohol and has a pH of 3.3. 15,000 bottles produced. James Suckling: A beautiful and extremely complex rosé with a sanguine hue. Deep and complex with subtle aromas of savory plums, caramel, resin, dried strawberries, blood oranges and exotic herbs. Full-bodied and comfortably chewy, with amazing, zesty acidity cutting it through. Long and savory, but bright, with some walnut in the finish. This almost has an Oloroso feel. Goes on and on. Drink or hold. Producer Information It all started in the middle of the nineteenth century when French negociants visited the Rioja region to find alternative sources of quality grapes to transform into wine, since the phylloxera epidemic had decimated their vineyards. Our founder, Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, a knowledgeable and enthusiastic student in the art of wine making, followed closely in their footsteps.Don Rafael fell in love with the region and especially the area around Haro, the mythical capital of the Rioja Alta region. He observed that there was a magical combination of soil and climate that would offer the perfect environment for producing wine that would eventually become world famous. Around 1877 he began the design and construction of the complex that is today known as the López de Heredia bodega (winery), the oldest in Haro and one of the first three houses in the Rioja region.

Reviews: James Suckling: This has very fine tannins and is driven, with a long, linear finish. Subtle and complex aromas and flavors of dark berries, minerals, sage and lavender bush. Medium body. Fresh finish. A little tight at the end. Jeb Dunnuck: The 2019 Finca el Bosque is another single vineyard and comes from a site on a deep, gravelly escarpment overlooking the Ebro River. It offers more ripe blue fruits and cassis as well as sappy herbs, flowers, violets, graphite, and chalky minerality. It shows a more elegant, flawlessly balanced, incredibly pure style on the palate, with ultra-fine tannins, wonderful overall balance, and no hard edges. This is pure class. The rest of the wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels (new, 1 or 2 years old) to achieve a velvety touch. Producer Information At the beginning of 3rd millennium, the magnificent estate of Perales de Valdueza, just above Mérida, was completely restored by the family Alvarez de Toledo. This family has owned this estate since 1624; it comprises some thousands of hectares of which 40 are under vines. It is one of the most famous families in Spain and its first mentions in the archives go back to 1085. The Alvarezes de Toledo were amongst the richest land owners of the kingdom at the time of the Reyes Católicos (1474-1504) and received the titles of Duke of Alba and Marquess of Valdueza. The first title is only famous in the Low Countries. Anyway, this family was often part of history. Today’s Marquess of Valdueza is set on giving back its lustre to the property. He called back from London his son Fadrique, so that he takes the estate in his hands and improve the quality of the production. His first mission was to renovate the olive orchard. Then followed the vines; in two years - 2002 and 2003, it was completely replanted. His first wine, Marqués de Valdueza Etiqueta Azul 2006, was launched on the market in 2008. Since then, two other cuvées have been added to the range, the Valdueza and the Marqués de Valdueza Etiqueta Roja.
