Producer Information Marqués de Riscal is one of Rioja's oldest and most famous wine estates. It makes a range of traditional-style Rioja wines made predominantly from Tempranillo, as well as a white wine from Rueda. Nowadays, the estate is as famous for the distinctive, Frank Gehry-designed hotel that forms part of the estate as it is for its wines. The company was founded in 1858 by the diplomat Camilo Hurtado de Amézega, the Marqués de Riscal. He had been living in Bordeaux and decided to bring French winemaking techniques back to his estate in Elciego. His wines became so popular that wire was stretched over the bottles to combat forgery, a feature that remains on many Rioja wines today. Over 150 years later, Marqués de Riscal is one of the oldest bodega of the Rioja appellation. The Marqués de Riscal estate covers around 500 hectares (1235 acres) of vineyards planted to Tempranillo, Graciano, Cabernet Sauvignon and Mazuelo. Producer Information Jonata Wines is a Californian wine producer, located in the Ballard Canyon within the larger Santa Ynez Valley AVA (American Viticultural Area). It is the sister winery to Napa Valley’s Screaming Eagle and also produces wine from the Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc grape varieties amoungst others. The flagship wine from the portfolio is the El Desafio, a Cabernet Sauvignon that includes tiny proportions of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, availible via allocation only. Multiple red blends are produced from the estate including the Fenix, a Bordeaux-style that is predominately Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The La Miel is a dessert-style wine from Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc that is barrel-aged in French oak prior to bottling. The 33 hectares (84 acres) of vineyard is owned by sports mogul Stan Kroenke. Here, the highly sandy soils are planted to Syrah, Sangiovese and multiple Bordeaux varieties. Producer Information At the beginning of 3rd millennium, the magnificent estate of Perales de Valdueza, just above Mérida, was completely restored by the family Alvarez de Toledo. This family has owned this estate since 1624; it comprises some thousands of hectares of which 40 are under vines. It is one of the most famous families in Spain and its first mentions in the archives go back to 1085. The Alvarezes de Toledo were amongst the richest land owners of the kingdom at the time of the Reyes Católicos (1474-1504) and received the titles of Duke of Alba and Marquess of Valdueza. The first title is only famous in the Low Countries. Anyway, this family was often part of history. Today’s Marquess of Valdueza is set on giving back its lustre to the property. He called back from London his son Fadrique, so that he takes the estate in his hands and improve the quality of the production. His first mission was to renovate the olive orchard. Then followed the vines; in two years - 2002 and 2003, it was completely replanted. His first wine, Marqués de Valdueza Etiqueta Azul 2006, was launched on the market in 2008. Since then, two other cuvées have been added to the range, the Valdueza and the Marqués de Valdueza Etiqueta Roja.
