This is very long and fresh with balance and purity. Producer Information Château de Beaucastel is a wine producer based in Courthézon, in the northern Châteauneuf-du-Pape region of the southern Rhône. It makes some of the most famous wines in the whole of the Rhône Valley, from a classic southern Rhône blend that includes Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah, as well as the lesser-known Counoise and Cinsaut varieties. The estate reportedly dates back to 1549 when Pierre de Beaucastel bought a barn and a plot of vineyards in the region and inscribed his family's crest onto the walls. The land passed through the family until 1909, when it came under control of scientist Pierre Perrin. Today, Perrin's grandsons Jean-Pierre and François run the estate. The château is located in the northeast corner of the appellation, just southeast of the city of Orange. There are around 100 hectares (250 acres) planted to vine, three-quarters of which is used to make the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC wines. Château de Beaucastel has all 13 of the permitted grape varieties for Châteauneuf-du-Pape planted in the vineyard (Bourboulenc; Brun Argenté/Vaccarèse; Cinsault; Clairette Blanc and Rose; Counoise; Grenache Blanc, Gris and Noir; Mourvèdre; Muscardin; Picardan; Piquepoul Blanc Gris and Noir; Roussanne; Syrah; and Terret Noir), giving the winemaking team a choice of fruit at harvest. The vines, which are up to 50 years old, are planted on a combination of sandstone, rocks and limestone, which drain freely, helping the vines produce concentrated berries. The grapes are hand-picked and are vinified in lots to provide consistency for blending, and oak is used sparingly. Château de Beaucastel's flagship Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine is predominantly made from Grenache and Mourvèdre, with a range of other grape varieties, including a portion of white grapes. There is also a Châteauneuf-du-Pape blanc, which...

Reviews: Wine Advocate: Showing much more open and expressive than when I tasted it last year (or said another way, I under-rated it), the 2012 Côtes du Rhône Villages Vinsobres les Hauts de Julien comes from close to 100-year-old vines located in the northern part of the Southern Rhône. A blend of Syrah and Grenache that’s still in barrel, it offers thrilling notes of smoked dark fruits, pepper meats, graphite and big minerality to go with a full-bodied, focused, concentrated and serious feel on the palate. This is impressive across the board, and might be the greatest Vinsobres I’ve ever tasted. James Suckling: Barrel sample. Bright crimson. Very correct and savoury, almost salty. With meat and tannins and some strong polished tannins underneath. A bit like licking rocks. Producer Information Famille Perrin is a leading wine producer and négociant in the southern Rhône Valley. Cask sample. Tasted blind. A deep nose, the dark side of Grenache – cocoa nib and dried bay leaves. Sandy firm tannins and lovely fruit character, sweet but with a cocoa note that adds depth and complexity. Really nicely put together wine. Reviews: Wine Advocate : The fabulous 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Grand Pin features complex pine and floral nuances that perfectly complement its ripe black-cherry fruit notes. Full-bodied, lush and creamy-textured, this is wonderfully expansive and mouthfilling without being weighty, and it finishes with tremendous length, echoing with complex notes of cola and Campari-like spices. The two tiny vineyards for Chapelle St. Theodoric are owned by American importer Peter Weygandt, while the wines are made at Domaine de Cristia, with the hands-on work done by Baptiste Grangeon and his cellar team. The focus is on Grenache grown in the nearly pure sand terroirs of la Guigasse and le Grand Pin (part of Pignan). The bunches are fermented whole, with aging taking place in demi-muids, typically for two years. Occasionally, a third wine, Les Sablons, is produced, sometimes blended from declassified barrels of La Guigasse and/or Le Grand Pin, but the 2019 is from young vines in la Guigasse (planted in 2013). Producer Information Chapelle St. Theodoric is a project between winemaker Baptiste Grangeon and Peter Weygandt. There are two parcels; one in the lieu-dit La Guigasse, which is a pure sand soil and where the vines (all Grenache) range in age of from 50 to 100 year; and the other parcel at the top of Pignan, literally adjoining the vines of Chateau Rayas, also in pure sand and also pure, old vines Grenache. The vinification is traditional, that is to say, whole-cluster, such as employed by Jacques Reynaud at Chateau Rayas, Laurent Charvin, Henri Bonneau. The two parcels are vinified and aged and bottled separately, but with the exact same treatment, the experiment being to find what terroir differences one might find in pure sand, between vines less than 200 meters apart, both on sand, pure Grenache and traditional vinification. The result has been a most exciting...

A blend of 50% Grenache and equal parts Syrah and Mourvedre that’s aged for 18 months in new oak, it has a deep, rich bouquet of blackberry, crème de cassis, licorice, leather, graphite, and spice-box that gives way to a full-bodied, perfectly balanced Châteauneuf-du-Pape that builds on the palate, with fantastic richness, ripe tannin, and a finish that won’t quit. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Another blockbuster is the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Origines. A blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 20% Mourvedre (45- to-95-year-old vines) aged in small oak, it exhibits an opaque purple color as well as a sweet bouquet of blackberries, espresso roast, ink and graphite. While clearly a modern-styled Chateauneuf du Pape, it retains plenty of the region's typicity and authenticity. Wine Spectator: Racy, offering delicious dark bramble, linzer torte and blackberry notes, with a strong graphite edge coursing through the finish. Gains density and flesh on the finish, which bodes well for the cellar. A modern style, but shows solid grounding in its terroir. Producer Information Established in the northern part of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in the commune of Orange, the Jaume family has been dedicated to the art of wine growing since 1826. Founded by Mathieu Jaume, the Domaine is now run by the 5th and 6th generations of Jaumes: Alain Jaume & his children Christophe, Sébastien, and Hélène. Historically, Domaine Grand Veneur was known for its white wines, until 1995 when the winery refocused their efforts on the reds. The estate now measures 225 acres and covers four appellations: Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes-du-Rhône 'Les Champauvins' & Côtes-du-Rhône (Rouge, Blanc & Rosé), Lirac, and Vacqueyras. Both Grand Veneur and Clos de Sixte vineyards are grown in accordance with certified organic agricultural practices. The soils are maintained exclusively by light plowing and fertilized with vegetal compost. The vines are only sprayed when there are justified risks to the health of the vines, and only organic-permitted treatments are used. Yields are low, or kept...

Reviews: Wine Advocate: Loaded with mulberry and blueberry fruit, graced by hints of star anise, cardamom, cinnamon and allspice, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin is another standout vintage for this wine. Full-bodied, rich, velvety and long on the finish, at this point, it's maybe not quite as sure a thing to reach the century score as the beyond-superlative 2018, but I wouldn't rule it out. This is seriously great wine. James Suckling: A great vintage for mourvedre in 2017, it represents 60% of this blend. Picked late, at the beginning of October, this has a very rich, dark-stone, leather, grilled-meat and slate nose with black fruit and wild herbs. The palate has a rich, smooth and long core of noble tannin with a wealth of dark cherries and dark plums. Long, suave tannins command the finish, where there’s a a late kick of spice. Then this gains in depth and grip as it moves through the finish, showing accents of apple wood, leather and Turkish coffee and ending dark and winey in feel. Built for the cellar. Vinous: Saturated ruby. Expansive, smoke- and mineral-accented black raspberry, cherry liqueur, cassis, exotic spice and licorice aromas show outstanding delineation and lift. The 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin is another prodigious version of this wine. How many wines in this world can be so huge yet so lacking the feeling of weight? There's plenty of layered spice but also a core of raspberries; rich tannins, yet no real astringency; and a long finish without any apparent heat. Wow! Producer: Saouma Vintage: 2012 Size: 1.5L ABV: 14.5% Varietal: Grenache Country/Region: France, Southern Rhone Producer Information Rotem & Mounir Saouma is an estate based in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in the Southern Rhône. The eponymous wife-and-husband team also own Lucien Le Moine, a small négociant-éléveur in Burgundy. The latter was founded in the late 1990s. Newly fermented wines are bought from partner growers, then aged and bottled by by the Saoumas. From the mid 2000s they wished to make wine from their own land, but finding vineyard parcels is very difficult in Burgundy. Furthermore they wished to avoid competing directly with partner growers and friends. Instead they looked to the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region - not an easy option either. Their strategy was to work with SAFER, the government-run land sales intermediary, and focus on lots which no on else wanted. Though the nine parcels they bought were often in a terrible state, they were able to access some very well-situated vines. Now 8.4 hectares (20.75 acres) are owned in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with more in the Côtes du Rhône-Villages AOP. In the cellars, white wines are pressed hard and juice is hyper-oxidized. The wine ferments slowly and gently on the lees. After 16 months or so these wines can still be undergoing malolactic fermentation. The new ferment can look dark brwn in color, but becomes "conventionally" pale while maturing. These techniques are designed to bring long life once bottled. Some reds are made by placing whole bunches in amphorae, which are left alone for a year. The Omnia Châteauneuf is made using large wooden foudres, 500-liter barrels, and cement tanks, including some eggs.

Producer Information Famille Bréchet is a family-run wine producer based in the southern Rhône, particularly known for its Grenache-based reds from Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas. The company is centred around properties previously owned by Gabriel Meffre which, on his death in 1987, were inherited by his daughter Sylvette Bréchet – the Gabriel Meffre company itself was bought by Allied Domecq in 1990. Château Vaudieu, located in the centre of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, is the flagship property. In the 19th Century, it was one of the grandest estates of the region, but suffered greatly in the phylloxera disaster that ravaged European vineyards in the late 19th and early 20th Century. It was rescued by Gabriel Meffre and redeveloped to boast an unparalleled 70 hectares (173 acres) of vineyards in one site. Bréchet makes three red and two white Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines at Château Vaudieu. In the Rhône, Famille Bréchet also owns Domaine des Bosquets – another prestigious, award-winning property located in Gigondas with 26 hectares (65 acres) of vineyard. Producer: Château de Beaucastel Ratings: WA 98 JS 97 Vintage: 2017 Size: 1.5L ABV: 14.5% Varietal: Southern Rhone Red Blend Country/Region: France, Southern Rhone With full-bodied richness, a stacked, opulent mid-palate, building tannins, and a sensational finish. Good potential, ripeness and concentration. As with the regular Beaucastel Châteauneuf, the intensity and plushness of tannin is a highlight here.

Producer: Saouma Vintage: 2013 Size: 1.5L ABV: 14% Varietal: Grenache Country/Region: France, Southern Rhone Producer Information Rotem & Mounir Saouma is an estate based in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in the Southern Rhône.

Its aromas make it a Châteauneuf-du-Pape accessible to many tasters, from beginners to the most experienced. Producer Information Famille Quiot is a French wine producer with numerous wine estates in southern France. The Quiot family has been making wine in the region since 1748, starting in Vaucluse in Châteauneuf-du-Pape at Domaine du Vieux Lazaret. Other estates acquired over time include Domaine Duclaux, Combes d'Arnevels, Domaine Houchart, Quiot Family, and Château du Trignon. Domaine du Vieux Lazaret is run by 13th-generation family member Jérôme Quiot and has expanded from a few hectares at its founding to cover 110 hectares (272 acres). Near Aix-en-Provence, lies the 60-hectare (148-acre) estate of Domaine Houchart, acquired in 1890. Almost a century later, the family took over Domaine Duclaux – a 14 hectare (35 acre) estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with vines averaging over 50 years old. In 2006, the family acquired Château du Trignon, an estate spanning 70 hectares (173 acres) across several southern Rhône appellations, including Gigondas, Rasteau, Sablet et Côtes du Rhône and Vacqueyras. Wines from the estates are typically vinified to be fruit-forward and approachable. Common winemaking practices include destemming, vinifying in concrete vats, and aging in large oak foudres. Classic northern Rhône and southern French varieties such as Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Cinsaut, Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier make up Famille Quiot's extensive wine portfolio.

Reviews: Wine Advocate: Red-fruited and garrigue-laden, the nose of the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin is glorious, showing remarkable complexity in its notes of cherries, raspberries and strawberries, all accented by hints of bay leaf, lavender and thyme, plus deeper bass notes of black olives, roasted meat, espresso, star anise and dark chocolate. Full-bodied and intense, it seems to have added structure since last year, with a firm matrix of tannins holding it all together and lingering on the lengthy finish. Put this Mourvèdre-based blend (approximately 60%) away for five or more years; it should drink well for a couple of decades beyond that. Vinous: Powerful dark berry, cherry cola, incense, potpourri, musky earth and spicecake aromas show outstanding clarity and pick up a smoky mineral nuance with aeration. Sweet and seamless in the mouth, offering deeply concentrated but energetic black raspberry, cherry preserve, five-spice powder and lavender pastille flavors given lift and spine by a core of juicy acidity. Blends richness and finesse with a deft hand and finishes incredibly long and precise, with youthfully firm tannins adding shape and final grip. Producer Information amille Bréchet is a family-run wine producer based in the southern Rhône, particularly known for its Grenache-based reds from Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas. It also holds Domaine de la Jérôme in Séguret, and Le Plateau des Chênes in Lirac.
