Producer: Vincent Girardin Vintage: 2020 Size: 750ml ABV: 13% Varietal: Chardonnay Country/Region: France, Meursault Meursault, a village in the Cote d'Or, is famous for producing some of the ripest, most opulent white wines in Burgundy. Made from old vine 100% chardonnay, this comes from the ever reliable Domaine Vincent Girardin and is aged in French oak barrels. It's full and toasty with a delicious freshness. Drink it now with fish, especially if butter is involved, or keep for a few years and it will develop into something truly magnificent. Producer Information Vincent Girardin is a highly regarded Burgundy domaine based in Meursault. It makes a wide range of wines from both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay although the latter predominates. Most holdings span the Côte de Beaune, from grand cru sites such as Le Montrachet and Corton-Charlemagne, through premiers crus in Chassagne and Puligny-Montrachet, Saint-Aubin and Santenay, all the way down to vineyards at village-level and regional appellations. The domaine has around 22 hectares (54 acres) of owned vineyards and also acts as a négoce, buying in fruit from growers who can adhere to a certain code of practice, which includes things like using higher trellising for better photosynthesis and avoiding the use of herbicides and insecticides. In the winery, the grapes undergo fermentations using indigenous yeasts, followed by long maturation on the fine lees. Vincent Girarden does not use a high proportion of new oak to mature its wines. The winery processes are aligned to lunar phases and the estate vineyards are biodynamic. The domaine began in 1982 when 18 year-old Vincent Girardin, the son of a long-standing family of Santenay winemakers, made his first wines from two hectares (five acres) of vineyard inherited from his parents. As demand began to take off, he developed supply relationships with growers who shared his approach – a practice which was new to Burgundy. Vincent Girardin sold the business in 2012 but Eric Germain, winemaker since the early 2000s, remained to ensure continuity. Vincent did not sell all the holdings, however, and a number of plots were held and passed on to Vincent's son, Pierre, who has since established Pierre Girardin.

On the palate, the wine unfolds with flavours of blackberries, dusty road, and a backdrop of cedar. The tannins are now perfectly integrated. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Trois Sources comes from the estate's vineyards planted in sandy soils. About 10,000 bottles have been produced. One of the great wines of the vintage, this unbelievable Chateauneuf is still extremely young and primary. Its opaque purple color is followed by scents of ink, acacia flowers, blueberries, black raspberries and blackberries. While full-bodied, extremely concentrated and massive, the wine is totally harmonious with beautifully integrated acidity, tannin and alcohol (which is no doubt in excess of 16%). Wine Spectator: A densely packed version, with notes of crushed plum, fig paste and blackberry preserves at the core, set against a backdrop of charcoal, ganache and singed anise. Still tightly wound, with a very grippy finish. The acidity is lively and well-embedded, so this should open nicely in the cellar. Producer Information Domaine de la Vieille Julienne is a Rhône Valley producer known for its Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The estate is based in Les Grès in the northern part of the appellation where it produces the common Rhône varieties Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Counoise and Cinsaut. The domaine was formed in 1905 and has been owned by the Daumen family ever since. It wasn't until the 1960s that Vieille Julienne began to bottle and release its own wines. It gained critical recognition and popularity in the 1990s after a focused effort to reduce yields. The Vieille Julienne Reserve Châteauneuf-du-Pape was first released in 1994 to critical acclaim, and has received 100-point scores from Robert Parker for several of its vintages. Vieille Julienne has 10 hectares (25 acres) under vine in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a further 5 hectares (12 acres) of Côtes du Rhône vineyards. Grenache is the most important variety, making up 60 percent of the flagship Vieille Julienne Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine, and the majority of all of the other red blends. The...

Producer: Vincent Girardin Vintage: 2018 Size: 750ml ABV: 13% Varietal: Pinot Noir Country/Region: France, Cote de Beaune A terrific village wine, the 2018 Pommard Les Vielles Vignes reveals a vibrant translucent ruby hue as well as a sweet nose of ripe black raspberries, wild strawberries, roasted herbs, and spice. This carries to a medium-bodied, lush, seamless Pommard with a beautiful core of sweet fruit, present yet ripe and integrated tannins, and a beautiful finish.

Producer: Domaine Yohan Lardy Vintage: 2019 Size: 750ml ABV: 13% Varietal: Gamay Country/Region: France, Beaujolais Intense light red fruit, raspberries. At the same time, there is a deep stone and earthy note. Producer Information Yohan Lardy’s youthful enthusiasm and charm are practically irresistible. As you chase him up and around his 114-year-old Gamay vines in Moulin a Vent you can’t help but share his feelings of extreme good fortune in getting to work this superb site known as ‘Les Michelons.’ Digging through the loose, sandy soil of the vineyard, Yohan searches for particularly beautiful chunks of quartz, granite, and manganese to show to us as if they were buried jewels. As he points into the distance at the peak of Mont Blanc appearing out from behind the clouds he tells us, “my office has the best view!” And then to drive home what we’re all thinking, he shouts, “I love this fucking terroir!” If you subscribe to the notion that the wine matches the winemaker, Yohan’s energy and unguarded good-humor will come as no surprise once you’ve tasted his wines. There is tremendous concentration and purity of fruit in the wines as well as great mineral structure. But there is a vivacity and lightness as well, reminiscent of Yohan as he cracks jokes about local eating (“I’m stuffed…choucroute?…well maybe a little…”) or his preferences for tasting wines in the open air, on a hilltop over-looking the Beaujolais Crus.

Producer: Domaine Alain Voge Ratings: WA 95 VN 95 Vintage: 2016 Size: 750ml ABV: 13.5% Varietal: Shiraz, Syrah Country/Region: France, Rhone Valley From lieux-dits Mazard and La Côte, 80% destemmed. Sun-warmed herbs accompany sand, lavender and raspberry on the nose. It has good aromatic freshness and definition, and the full-bodied palate is also clean, super-fresh and lively. It's dense and ripe, defined by serrated tannins, keen acidity and a mouth-coating character. This is full of character, a very classic expression of Cornas that's not massive, but is detailed, clear and sinewy with mineral hints. Seriously good this year. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Looking much better than the sample I reviewed last year, the 2016 Cornas Vieilles Fontaines has come into its own. It's still cedary but also mammothly concentrated in blackberry and plum fruit, all underscored by notes of crushed granite. Full-bodied and muscular, it's elegant at the same time, with mouthwatering, juicy fruit and softly dusty tannins on the long finish. Vinous: Dark purple. Deep-pitched cassis, blueberry, candied licorice and violet aromas are complicated by olive and licorice nuances. Broad and expansive on the palate, offering deeply concentrated black and blue fruit liqueur, spicecake and floral pastille flavors and an incense-tinged flourish of smoky minerals. Becomes sweeter and more energetic with air and finishes extremely long and spicy, with slow-building tannins and lingering florality. Producer Information Since its inception, several generations ago, Domaine Alain Voge has always been a family domain located in Cornas. In 1958, Alain Voge joined his father to work on the small typical farm. He decided to specialise in wine.At the time, it was an audacious decision: despite their history, the Cornas and Saint Peray appellations were forgotten sleeping beauties. Very quickly, he extended the vineyards in places which had remained uncultivated over the last 30 years and developed the sales of his bottled wines. Supported by his wife Eliane, he visited the best national and regional restaurants to make his wines known.

Pure dark berries, tar and violet on the high-pitched nose. At once lush and juicy, with terrific definition to its flavors of black fruits, tar and mint. The substantial, strong tannins reach the front teeth. Finishes uncompromisingly dry but with the fat of the year. Bachelet tends to press early, as he's afraid of getting too much extraction of tannins in the presence of alcohol. This one needs a solid decade of bottle aging. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Bachelet’s 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Corbeaux (from a tiny cru adjacent to Mazis and still palpably gassy from late malo) offers a profound nose of fresh blackberry and smoked meat. It displays a lean, sharply-focused palate of ripe and deep but tart black fruits and salted, toasted walnuts, with an undertone of bitter chocolate. The contrast of darkly-hued fruit, stony minerality, and palpably high extract with persistent fresh, tart, juiciness is striking, but this clearly outstanding wine nevertheless really needs time to knit itself and reveal its future personality. Wine Spectator: Like all of the '05 Bachelet wines I tasted the Corbeaux displays enough wood to notice though not so much as to dominate the distinctly sauvage and highly complex dark berry fruit and earth aromas that remain largely if not completely primary in character. There is the same excellent complexity to the utterly delicious and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that brim with dry extract on the still firm finale that delivers outstanding length on the impeccably well-balanced finish. Thanks to the abundance sap this is not only quite drinkable now but it's enjoyable as well and thus my advice to hold for a few more years to allow the tannins to mellow is less important than usual. Producer Information Domaine Denis Bachelet is a small Burgundy producer in Gevrey-Chambertin that has created a following around its limited, small-production red wines made from Pinot Noir. The winery was established by Denis Bachelet in 1983, when he took over family plots totalling just under two hectares (five acres)....

Producer: Domaine Alain Voge Vintage: 2001 Size: 750ml ABV: 13.8% Varietal: Syrah Country/Region: France, Rhone This wine, produced solely in superb vintages, comes from a plot of vines aged 80 years old, planted on a magnificent granite terroir. The vines, with their roots set deep down, produce grapes of outstanding expression. Producer Information Domaine Alain Voge is an organic and biodynamic French wine producer from the northern Rhône Valley. It is best known for its red Syrah wines from Cornas and white wines from Saint-Péray. The portfolio includes a trio of Cornas reds. Les Chailles is the 'standard' offering, aged for 18 months in 228-liter barrels with no new wood. Les Vieilles Vignes (old vines) has 20 months with 15 to 20 percent new barrels, while Les Vieilles Fontaines has 24 months in barrel with the same prortion of new wood. The latter is so named because the vineyard is located in an area called La Fontaine (the spring) where a noble family in Cornas sourced their drinking water. The 2010 vintage gained a 100-point rating from Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate, the first wine from Cornas to achieve this. There are also a trio of still white wines from the Saint-Péray appellation, made from the Marsanne grape variety. These begin with Harmonie, a cuvée fermented and aged in concrete vats. Ongrie (previously Cuvée Boisée and then Terres Boisées) is fermented and aged in 228-liter and 400-liter barrels with 30 percent new oak for 13 months on its fine lees. Fleur du Croussol comes from the oldest vines in the estate and in the Saint-Péray appellation on the granite and limestone soils of the Crussol hills. It is aged as for Ongrie, but for 16 months. There is also a single red Saint-Joseph and a red Côtes du Rhône. A Traditional Method Marsanne sparkling white Saint-Péray is named Les Bulles d'Alain (Alain's Bubbles). The estate now boasts 6.5 hectares (16 acres) of 30-year-old Syrah vines in Cornas. It also has 4ha (10 acres) of vineyards in Saint-Péray planted almost entirely to Marsanne. In total there are 13ha of vineyards, all of which have been certified organic and biodynamic since 2016. Currently massal selection - replacing vines with stocks from the existing vineyard - is a key area of focus.

The finish is quite unique, rich and long lasting. Producer Information Jean-François Ganevat is a well-regarded, minimal interventionist wine producer based in the commune of Rotalier (more precisely in the hamlet of La Combe de Rotalier), in the mountainous Jura wine region of eastern France. The domaine has been family-owned since 1650 and is currently run by Jean-François Ganevat, who previously trained and worked at Domaine Jean-Marc Morey in Chassagne-Montrachet. Ganevat produces 1700 cases a year, made up of 35-40 different cuvées that aim to highlight terroir, grape variety, or winemaking style. The 8.5-hectare (21-acre) estate is certified biodynamic and planted to 17 different local red and white varieties, including outlawed varieties such as Petit Béclan, Gros Béclan, Gueuche, Seyve-Villard, Corbeau, Portugais Bleu, Enfariné, Argant, and Poulsard Blanc. While the domaine produces single varietal Côtes du Jura AOP wines from estate-grown fruit, it also sources wine grapes from Alsace, Savoie, and Beaujolais to make appellation Vin de France cuvées. These cuvées, blended with purchased and estate-grown grapes, allow the winemaker the ability to use all indigenous varieties and craft unique, albeit declassified, wines. Jean-François uses old and individualized winemaking techniques. He de-stems by hand, uses no new oak, ages white wines on the lees for a minimum of two years and, in 2006, completely eradicated the use of sulfur. His unique and expansive portfolio of wines includes Vin Jaune, Macvin du Jura, and Crémant du Jura.

Producer Information Domaine Michel Magnien & Frédéric Magnien is a wine producer and négociant based in Morey-Saint-Denis, in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy. The Michel Magnien estate covers 18 hectares (44 acres) with plots in grand cru, premier cru, village and regional AOC vineyards in the area. The estate is run by Michel's son, Frédéric, who also produces an eponymous négoce range of wines made from fruit purchased off other growers. Frédéric Magnien – one of the region's most respected winemakers – joined his father Michel at the domaine in 1993. Until the early 1990s, the domaine only bottled part of its production, selling the rest to négociants. This changed when Frédéric took on production for his father, roughly at the same time as setting up his own négociant label (often referred to as "Maison Frédéric Magnien") in 1995. By law, the two operations have to have different winemaking facilities, though both are based in Morey-Saint-Denis and are neighboring sites. The domaine vineyards (which have been certified organic since 2008 and biodynamic since 2015) include holdings in Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis and Vosne Romanée, plus AOC Bourgogne zones. Highlights include parcels in the Charmes-Chambertin (0.3 hectares/0.7 acres), Clos de la Roche (0.4 hectares/one acre) and Clos-Saint-Denis (0.1 hectares/0.2 acres) Grand Crus. Premier cru holdings (among numerous others) include 0.3 hectares in Gevrey's Les Cazetiers; 0.7 hectares (1.7 acres) in Les Chaffots and 0.4 hectares (one acre) in Les Millandes (Morey); as well as 0.2 hectares (0.5 acres) in Chambolle's Les Sentiers. Magnien produces around twenty red wines and a handful of whites. The (Maison) Frédéric Magnien négociant range is even more extensive with around 60 red wines and 20 whites from appellations across Burgundy, although the majority of wines come from Morey itself. Wines are made from bought-in grapes from top sites with an emphasis on Premier Cru and...

As well as its fine, mineral-laden wines made from the Chardonnay grape variety, the company has interests in regions as far-reaching as the Languedoc, Chile and South Africa. The domaine was founded in Chablis in 1850 by vineyard worker Jean Victor Laroche. After five generations in the family, Domaine Laroche has come to be one of the largest producers in Chablis. It owns 6 hectares (15 acres) of grand cru vineyards with plots in Les Blanchots, Les Bougros and Les Clos, as well as a further 30 hectares (73 acres) of premier cru vineyards. There is also a single Petit Chablis in the Laroche portfolio. In 2014, Domaine Laroche launched a single-vineyard Chablis at the village level from Vieille Voye. This is an uncommon practice as the vast majority of village Burgundy is blended from multiple sites. Michel Laroche has recently led an expansion of the family name into new regions. In 2002, Laroche ventured into Chile with the property Viña Punto Alto which produces wines under the Viña Laroche label. Fruit comes from the Casablanca, Maipo and Colchagua valleys and includes Carmenère, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. In the same year, Laroche also purchased the L'Avenir winery in South Africa. Producer Information Domaine Denis Bachelet is a small Burgundy producer in Gevrey-Chambertin that has created a following around its limited, small-production red wines made from Pinot Noir. The winery was established by Denis Bachelet in 1983, when he took over family plots totalling just under two hectares (five acres). His grandfather had tended the vines until his retirement in 1973, but his father had pursued another career, and the vineyards had suffered from the lack of attention. Bachelet doubled the estate's vineyard holdings, and acquired a small plot in the grand cru Charmes-Chambertin vineyard, and another plot in the premier cru Les Corbeaux vineyard. Both holdings cover just over 0.4 hectares (one acre) each. Denis Bachelet also makes several Gevrey-Chambertin and Côte de Nuits-Villages wines, as well as a Bourgogne Rouge and a Bourgogne Aligoté. Many of Bachelet's vines are quite old, with some in Charmes-Chambertin being more than a century old. Grapes are entirely destemmed and fermentation uses natural yeasts followed by up to eight days of cold maceration. The wines are then aged in oak, with the length of time and percentage of new oak dependent on the wine.

Gains in freshness after a bit of aeration in the glass, adding to its considerable appeal. Producer Information Champagne Larmandier-Bernier is a Champagne house in Vertus, just south of Reims, producing acclaimed wines from Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims vineyards. It was founded by Philippe Larmandier and Elisabeth Bernier in 1971. The Larmandier and Bernier families have an impressive winemaking history dating back to the French Revolution. Indeed, the Larmandier family is credited with helping to raise the profile of the Côte de Blancs region. Pierre Larmandier took over the reins of the estate in 1988. The Champagne Larmandier-Bernier portfolio of wines are generally drier in style. Most are Extra Brut, including Latitude, the core release, and the Longitude Premier Cru made exclusively from Côte de Blancs vineyards. The estate also produces a single-cru Non-Dosé Champagne, Terre de Vertus. The Rosé de Saignée is unusual in that it is a 90:10 combination of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. The latter (aka Fromenteau in the region) accounted for around half of the Champagne vineyard around 300 years ago; now it is very rare. In addition to its non-vintage Champagnes, the house produces two single-vineyard vintage Champagnes: Vieille Vigne du Levant and Les Chemins d'Avize. Previously, red and white expressions of Côteaux Champenois featured; these are no longer made. The 15 hectares (37 acres) of vineyards are planted to over 90 percent Chardonnay with Pinot Noir and a small amount of Pinot Gris. The vineyards enjoy east and southeast-facing exposures and are planted on chalky soils 100 to 220 meters (328 to 722ft) above sea level. The domaine was founded in 1969 by Jean Dutraive, making it one of the oldest estates in the region. It farms a little more than 10 hectares (24 acres) of vineyards with fewer than 1000 cases produced annually from each plot, with some variation depending on the vintage. In the winery, the domaine practices a number of minimalist winemaking techniques. All the fruit is hand-harvested, wild yeasts are used for fermentation and carbonic maceration is kept at low temperatures. Aging often takes place in used Burgundy oak barrels but depending on the vintage and the cuvée, cement vats and used wooden foudres can be employed. Producer: Château de La Tour Ratings: WE 93 JS 94 Vintage: 2017 Size: 750ml ABV: 13.5% Varietal: Pinot Noir Country/Region: France, Clos de Vougeot Similar wood treatment with a touch of menthol is present on the red berry aromas. There is better mid-palate density to the broad-shouldered and powerful flavors that possess excellent depth and persistence on the balanced and youthfully austere finish where a hint of wood resurfaces. Reviews: Wine Enthusiast: A subtle but toasty note of oak mixes with red cherry on this wine's nose. The same aromatics appear on the toned palate but the cherry with its juicy freshness has the upper hand. Fine tannins provide a firm, smooth backdrop for the mouthwatering fruit and the nuanced aromas. James Suckling: Flashy, this red offers flamboyant oak and exotic Asian spice aromas and flavors draped over ripe cherry and plum fruit. It's harmonious and there are no edges, so give this time to integrate more fully. Shows terrific length. Producer Information Château de La Tour is a wine producer and building located within the walls of the famed Clos de Vougeot in the Vougeot appellation of Burgundy's Côte de Nuits subregion. It is the largest landholder in the famously fragmented Pinot Noir clos, owning nearly 11 percent of the land therein. It is also the only other major building – aside from the famous Château du Clos de Vougeot – within the walls. The estate's holdings total just under 5.5 hectares (13 acres) in plots on the middle and upper slopes of the clos. Château de la Tour's best parcel is planted to vines that are more than 100 years old, and are the source for the Cuvée Vieilles Vignes as well as the Cuvée Hommage Jean Morin wines – the latter named after owner François Labet's grandfather. The château itself was built in 1890, and today serves as the winery for both Chateau de la Tour and Domaine Pierre Labet wines. The grapes are whole-bunch fermented and then matured in French oak barrels for 16-18 months. The proportion of new oak depends on the cuvée – 50 percent for the regular Clos Vougeot cuvée and 100 percent for the Vieilles Vignes and Cuvée Hommage Jean Morin wines. Château de La Tour's top cuvée, Hommage Jean Morin, is produced only in exceptional vintages from the estate's oldest vines, and only from the first bunch on the first shoot of each vine. It was first produced in 2010 and is made in tiny...

Reviews: Jeb Dunnuck: My wine of the vintage is the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Reserve, which is in the same league as the other greats from this estate including the 2001, 2003, 2005, 2010, and 2016. Revealing a deep purple color as well as a massive bouquet of crème de cassis, violets, graphite, black licorice, and hints of pepper garrigue, it hits the palate with a massive array of fruit, full-bodied richness, no hard edges, and enough sweet tannins to warrant another 5-7 years of bottle age. Vinous: The Réservé is sourced from low-yielding vines, the fruit vinified without extraction with just one punch-down each day. It has beautifully floral notes of violets, strawberries and raspberries, plus some high-toned herbal elements. There's good concentration of red berry fruit coulis in the mouth - it's always a deeply lush and opulent cuvée, and the 2017 has generosity but also tension and precision. A lovely tannic frame and a mineral undertow provide support for the necessarily high alcohol, a product of the very ripe, Grenache-based style. A very good year for this cuvée. Vieille Julienne has 10 hectares (25 acres) under vine in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a further 5 hectares (12 acres) of Côtes du Rhône vineyards....
