Reviews: Wine Enthusiast: A touch of stone fruit gives a richer fruitier edge to the apple notes on the nose. The palate is wonderfully fresh but majors on that fresh crisp apple aroma, helped along by lively citrus. The bubbles are fine and consistent on the refreshing, slender and almost creamy body—a wonderful apéritif style with a dry finish. Decanter: Fine and delicate bubbles fill the mouth with dominant notes of toasted vanilla spice, lemon peel, apple and lime juice. It has crisp acidity and lively, persistent finish. 9g/l residual sugar. A wonderful apéritif style. Producer Information The Cave de Ribeauvillé covers a single vineyard of 580 acres with 8 Grands Crus and many soils of great value. The total surface is managed by a quality chart which guarantees strict control of the yields, sustainable growth of the vineyards or even organic farming, and… manual harvest. This choice for quality allows sorting of the best grapes that are transported in small elevator-wagons to the presses, without any pumping or handling. The juices then simply flow into the vats by the force of gravity. This method, unique in Alsace, enables all of the aromatic virtues of each varietal to be conserved. The wines express all the richness and diversity of the Alsatian soils. They are pure, straight and frank, with nice freshness and aromatic intensity.

No doubt this was a catalyst for him entering the world of wine later on life. But it wasn’t until 2002 when he found his dream winery in Tupungato, an old property with great views of the Andes mountains, a really unique soil and irrigation system. It's long, sleek and mineral, with tight, very fine bubbles and so much tension and precision. Very long and chalky finish. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2013 Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne's bouquet is compellingly fresh and minty, revealing aromas of white fruit—notably pear and apple—marzipan and sweet spices, as well as a light touch of citrus mingled with classy autolytic notes. On the palate, this is a structured, tensile and ethereal Champagne with high acidity—a sign of a classic vintage—animated by a mousse of striking finesse and delicacy. Although already enjoyable, it should develop well for several decades. Wine Enthusiast: This beautiful Chardonnay from five top Grand Cru vineyards is textured with fruit that is still impressively perfumed. Its concentration has allowed it to remain perennially young. Although there are hints of toastiness, the Champagne has many more years of potential. Producer Information Champagne Taittinger was established in 1931 by Pierre Taittinger on the foundations of Forest-Forneaux, itself established in 1734 and the third-oldest wine producing house of Champagne. Taittinger is today proprietor of approximately 600 acres of vines among which are included parcels in the one hundred - percent rated villages of Cramant and Avize in the Cote des Blancs; and Bouzy, Mailly, Ambonnay and Verzenay in the Montagne de Reims. The Taittinger Estate is one of the three most extensive in the Champagne district, and the firm's major holdings in Chardonnay vineyards are the physical expression of the Taittinger philosophy and style.

Distillery Information Taittinger is one of Champagne's most famous houses. Based in the city of Reims, Taittinger is known for its Chardonnay-dominant cuvées, the pinnacle of which is the blanc de blancs prestige cuvée, Comtes de Champagne. The family-owned estate has approximately 290 hectares (710 acres) of vines, around half of which is planted to Pinot Noir, with Chardonnay and a small amount of Pinot Meunier making up the rest. These vineyards contribute 50 percent of Taittinger's output, with the rest coming from growers who have historical relationships with the house. Taittinger's Brut Reserve NV is composed of 40 percent Chardonnay, with the two Pinots making up the remainder. This makes for a fresh and reasonably delicate house style. In addition to this, Taittinger makes a range of Champagne styles, including a demi-sec, several rosés and an array of single-vineyard, vintage and otherwise limited-edition wines. The Comtes de Champagne is Taittinger's top wine, and was first made in the 1952 vintage. The grapes are mostly sourced from grand cru vineyards across Avizé, Chouilly and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Oak is used sparingly to impart flavors of brioche and grilled almonds, rather than to add any tannins or weight. The bottles are kept for at least 10 years in the underground chalk galleries beneath the former Saint-Nicaise Abbey in Reims (now the Taittinger headquarters).

Producer: Bodegas Felix Callejo Ratings: JS 92 WA 91 Vintage: 2010 Size: 750ml ABV: 14.5% Varietal: Tempranillo Country/Region: Spain, Ribera del Duero This wine has great life and boldness. It evokes the passion for the Tempanillo grape, the same passion our grandfather passed on to our father, Félix Callejo, and which he in turn transmits to us each day. This wine offers aromas of black fruit, violets, cracked pepper and tarragon. It is dense and layered, with a soft velvet texture and firm, ripe tannins. A tremendous wine. Reviews: James Suckling: Big black fruit and serious tannins, but also a nice acidity that helps lift the wine to a bold, spicy finish. Wine Advocate: The 2010 Vinedos de la Familia is 100% Tempranillo from 60-year-old vineyards aged for 15 months in new French oak barrels. It feels a bit wild, with notes of reduction, under which there are aromas of black fruit, wet slate, graphite and peat, with some notes of dark chocolate and coffee developing with time. The palate is full-bodied, with plenty of tannins and good fruit but feels a bit aggressive. It might improve with time in bottle. Producer Information A life project started by Félix and Pilar in 1969. Bodegas Félix Callejo located in the municipality of Sotillo de la Ribera (Burgos), a town with less than 500 inhabitants. After 47 years and now in its second generation, it confirms the vision of the area's potential to produce quality wines that Félix Callejo started between vineyards, to launch his first harvest 20 years later in 1989. Félix Callejo took over the reins of the business only 16 years old and he always had the dream of making his own wine. Both his grandfather Faustino and his father Félix owned a vineyard, in addition to being "wine brokers", a kind of commercial agent, in charge of selling the batches of wine made in Sotillo. With his bottle under his arm, he was a pioneer in introducing Ribera del Duero wines to countries where there was hardly any wine culture. The soils where its vineyards are located range from limestone in the upper parts (930 meters above sea level), to clay-loam, sandy and pebble as you descend through the profile, with limestone areas in upper parts of slopes. . All this variety of soils, where Tinta Fina or Tempranillo is expressed in a different way, gives...

Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2012 Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne is showing beautifully out of the gates, offering up demonstrative aromas of sweet golden orchard fruit, buttery croissants, peach and hazelnuts. Medium to full-bodied, pillowy and enveloping, it's a rich, textural, vinous Comtes somewhat reminiscent of the brilliant 2002. If it gains in tension and cut (as the 2002 did and as I suspect the 2012 will) with more time on cork, it will make this initial rating seem conservative. James Suckling: This is a fantastic and refined Blanc de Blancs. So layered and complex, with lemon curd, chalk, hazelnuts, pastries, baked apples and almond croissants. Reviews: Wine Advocate: It’s fascinating to taste the 2004 Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne after the 2002, something I have been able to do on a few occasions. The 2004 is all about minerality, precision and tension. It doesn’t have the sheer richness or power of the 2002, but it makes up for that with its crystalline purity and sheer energy. Bright hints of lemon oil, white flowers and crushed rocks are layered into the pointed, vibrant finish. Producer: Taittinger Vintage: 1995 Size: 1.5L ABV: 12.5% Varietal: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir Country/Region: France, Champagne The 1995 vintage reveals maturing notes of red berries, earth, cinnamon and a hint of strawberry funk. On the palate, it is medium in weight with a soft mouthfeel, good acidity and excellent length. Rich and smooth mousse. Producer Information Taittinger is one of Champagne's most famous houses. Taittinger's flagship is considered one of the most consistent blanc de blancs (effectively a Chardonnay-only Champagne) from the region. Taittinger also produces a somewhat rarer Comtes de Champagne Brut Rosé. The blend for this wine is more Pinot Noir-dominant with only 30 percent Chardonnay in the base wine and 15 percent of the Pinot Noir vinified as a red wine (in other words, fermented on skins) prior to blending. The house was established under Pierre Taittinger in 1932. His son François took the reins in 1945...

Broad, rich, deep, and medium to full-bodied, this dense (yet admirable balanced), powerful wine is packed with concentrated layers of white fruits, flowers, and toast. Notes of tangy green apples appear in its awesomely long finish to reinvigorate the palate. James Suckling: Toast and graphite flavors highlight this elegant, graceful blanc de blancs. Expect a delicate balance of red fruit flavours, such as raspberries and cherries, along with floral notes and hints of spice. The silky texture and fine-grained tannins make it enjoyable to drink now, but it may also benefit from further aging. Producer Information Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, based in the village of Chambolle-Musigny in Burgundy's Côte de Nuits, is one of the most famous wine producers in the region. The historic family estate has a lineage dating back almost half a millennium and forms part of the history of the village of Chambolle-Musigny, where it produces elegant wines made from Pinot Noir and, historically, Chardonnay from the Musigny Grand Cru site. The self-proclaimed "Domaine de Musigny", the estate holds 7.2 hectares (18 acres) of the Musigny Grand Cru vineyard – by far the biggest landowner in the 10.8 hectare (27 acre) climat, including all of the Petit Musigny plot at the southern end that directly overlooks the wall and château of the Clos de Vougeot. The estate also boasts 2.7 hectares (6.5 acres) of Bonnes-Mares – the other grand cru site in the commune of Chambolle-Musigny. Vines are also held in the famous Les Amoureuses Premier Cru vineyard (this amounts to just over half a hectare or 1.4 acres), as well as Les Baudes and Les Fuées, although these are often used to make the village-level wine. Musigny's steep slopes and stony, friable soils, and winemaker Francois Millet's low-intervention techniques, combine to produce a heavily fragranced wine with notes of violets, raspberries and blackberries. The wine, which is one of the most expensive in Chambolle-Musigny, is highly collectable and has the ability to age for decades. The Bonnes-Mares label, on the other hand, tends to be more robust, with more direct fruit and stronger tannins. Historically, Chardonnay was planted alongside the Pinot Noir vines to assist with the acidity and softness of the eventual wine. De Vogüé dug up half of its Chardonnay vines in 1986, and replaced them in their own plot in...

Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2017 Meursault Clos de la Barre has turned out very well, opening in the glass with a youthfully reserved bouquet of citrus oil, clear honey, green orchard fruit and almond paste that's actually less forthcoming than the Perrières at this very early stage. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and satiny, with tangy acids, good concentration and a lively, saline finish. While this will be approachable young, expect real complexity to emerge with a decade's bottle age. Allen Meadows: A perfumed nose offers up notes of green apple, lemon zest, algae and oyster shell. The sleek, delineated and powerful large-scaled flavors are shaped by a firm citrus-tinged acid spine on the exuberantly spicy, strikingly long and bone-dry finish. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Notes of sweet berry fruit, raw cocoa and loamy soil introduce the 2019 Monthélie Les Duresses, a medium-bodied, beautifully refined red with a lively core of fruit that's framed by powdery, ultra-refined tannins. This has turned out especially well. Dominique Lafon—joined by daughter Léa and nephew Pierre—began picking on September 5 and was very upbeat about the quality of the 2019 vintage, reporting yields in the region of 40 hectoliters per hectare and alcohol levels in the upper 13s. Both more concentrated and more incisive in white and finer-boned and more elegant in red, I'd give the nod to 2019 over 2018 in both colors at this address. And that is quite a compliment, as Lafon really excelled in 2018. In short, as Dominique hands the reins to the next generation, it's fair to say that the Domaine des Comtes Lafon is in very fine shape indeed. Allen Meadows: Pretty and ripe aromas are comprised by notes of various red berries, plenty of earth and a spicy top note. The exceptionally rich, round and plump flavors are seductive while offering fine depth and persistence on the ever so mildly austere finale. This should be relatively accessible young. Again this is super-rich on the nose with very sweet blackcurrant fruit rather hiding the detail and even the structure. Fresh enough finish but really hard to pick out as yet. The aroma from the empty glass is flamboyant liqueur raspberry and bilberry. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, fine acidity, lightly spiced with a classy espresso-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. Reviews: Decanter: Zanetti divides the Clos des Epéneaux in four sections, which are all fermented and matured separately and then assembled. The assemblage of the three is the most compelling, with a mix of violet notes and expressive cherry fruit aromas on the attack, plus mineral, spice and saline notes that develop with time. There is plenty of body, but little of the tannic, slightly rustic character for which Pommard can be known. Burghound: This too is aromatically moderately reduced and unreadable today. By contrast there is fine freshness and verve to the dense, powerful, and muscular larger-scaled flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract before concluding in a dusty, austere, and firm finale. The 2019 Clos is excellent though I underscore that it's also quite serious, and as is usually the case, is going to require extending cellaring to arrive at its peak. Producer Information Domaine des Epeneaux Comte Armand is a Burgundy producer in the Pommard appellation of the Côte de Beaune. It is known for its Pinot Noir, especially that from the estate's premier cru monopole, Clos de Epeneaux. The domaine has been owned by the Armand family for almost two centuries. Nicolas Marey bought the 5 hectare (12 acre) Epeneaux vineyard at the end of the 18th Century after it was confiscated from the church during the French Revolution. Clos de Epeneaux is nestled between the Grands Epenots and Petits Epenots in Pommard, and together they constitute the prestigious Epenots lieu-dit. Marey built the wall (or clos) sometime around 1805 and established the monopole, as well as the name of the domaine. It then passed by marriage to the Armand family in 1828. Clos de Epeneaux has since been named a premier cru site and is one of the ten largest monopole vineyards in the...

The attractively textured and fleshy flavors possess very good length if only average depth on the ever-so-mildly warm finish. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2017 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Clos des Grandes Vignes Blanc had seen no sulfur dioxide between the vintage and September 2018, as Liger-Belair believes in letting the wine get quite oxidative before bringing it back to a more reductive state later in its élevage. Offering up aromas of waxy lemon rind, bruised apples and honeycomb, the wine is medium to full-bodied, textural and phenolic, with chewy structuring extract and a long, mouthwatering finish. Vinous: The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Grands Vignes Blanc 1er Cru, matured in around 28% new oak, has an attractive bouquet with scents of brioche, honey and yellow flowers plus a hint of custard creams in the background. The palate is well balanced with a creamy opening, a little low in acidity compared to recent vintages, but displays fine purity toward the finish. Drink over the next decade. Producer Information Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, founded in 2000, is a relatively new wine producer in Burgundy, although the Liger-Belair family have owned vineyards in Vosne-Romanée since 1815. The domaine makes a range of grand and premier cru wines from vineyards in Nuits-Saint-Georges and Vosne-Romanée, with the tiny monopole of La Romanée providing Comte Liger-Belair's flagship wine. Louis Liger-Belair, a former general in Napoleon's army, acquired a vineyard holdings during the state sell-off of estates confiscated under the French Revolution – including the impressive Château de Vosne-Romanée. The Liger-Belairs held a good portion of land in the southern Côte de Nuits in the 19th Century, owning La Romanée and La Tâche as well as large portions of Clos de Vougeot and Chambertin, and a handful of premier cru vineyards. Much of the land was sold off in 1933 under Burgundy's complicated Napoleonic inheritance laws....

The texture is structured and fresh, but there is no lack of density. An exemplary and superb Meursault. This iconic, village-level monopole of the domaine covers more than 2ha just behind Lafon's house in Meursault. Producer Information Domaine des Comtes Lafon is a wine producer in Burgundy making some of the most lauded (and highly priced) white wines from Chardonnay in the region. It is located in Meursault in the Côte de Beaune subregion, but has vineyards in three other villages: Chassagne-Montrachet, Volnay and Monthélie. Comtes Lafon's house and cellar were built in 1869 by the Boch family, but its reputation as a winery was most heavily influenced by Jules Lafon, who married Marie Boch in 1894. Lafon bought many of the significant premier cru plots in Meursault and Volnay, and in 1919, parcels in the grand cru Le Montrachet vineyard. Domaine des Comtes Lafon saw an extended period of sharecropping after Jules Lafon's death and the future of the estate became uncertain. It was Jules' grandson René Lafon who took an interest in the winery and fought to stop the division of the vineyards – a move that secured the future of the domaine. Despite René's intervention, many of the lease agreements with the sharecroppers remained in place for decades. Comtes Lafon was making highly regarded whites in many vintages but without consistency. It wasn't until René's son, Dominique, facilitated the end of the sharecropping agreements in the late 1980s and early '90s that Domaine des Comtes Lafon was able to reach its full potential. In 1995, it adopted organic practices and since 1998 has been entirely biodynamic. Comte Lafon's stand-out wine is its single grand cru Montrachet, which has consistently been listed as one of the most expensive wines in the world. The domaine also has a range of premier cru white and red wines and while the whites have always been highly regarded, its red wines have gained new recognition for their quality in more recent vintages. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Unwinding in the glass with notes of pear, citrus oil, mandarin orange, ripe peaches, freshly baked bread and clear honey, Lafon's 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru is full-bodied, elegantly muscular and layered, with a deep and prodigiously concentrated core, striking mid-palate amplitude and a long, lip-smacking finish. In any comparison between the triumvirate of 2017, 2018, and 2019, I can see this, the youngest of the three, taking first place a decade from now. Allen Meadows: A cool and ripe mix is composed by an array of both white and yellow orchard fruit and a beautiful array of spice elements, all of which is trimmed in discreet wood influence. This is a big but not massive wine as the flavors are sculpted and intense while offering a highly beguiling texture on the powerful and muscular finish that is phenomenally long. Reviews: Wine Advocate: As readers will know, the 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru consists entirely of declassified young vine Musigny, and the wine naturally bears a certain resemblance to its big brother, unfurling in the glass with aromas of ripe cherries, cassis, dark chocolate and Indian spices. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a nicely concentrated core of fruit that's still quite primary, having finished its malolactic fermentation only in June/July, framed by chalky underlying tannins and juicy acids. François Millet began the harvest at Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé on September 2, having worked hard throughout the growing season to limit the generous potential yields provided by vines that suffered hard in the 2016 frosts. He succeeded in delaying malolactic fermentations until the following summer, and the resulting wines are unusually saturated in hue—to the extent that Millet was anxious to emphasize that he hadn't sought to extract more than usual. Readers will know the by now well-established rudiments of winemaking here: destemmed grapes, slow fermentations emphasizing pumping over—with pigeage reserved solely for the Bonnes Mares, delayed malolactic fermentations and élevage with one racking. Decanter: The younger vines from Musigny - which means less than 25 years old at de Vogüé - are always made as a separate cuvée, and rightly so. This comes from white soils and the freshness of the limestone really sings on the palate. It has an impressive structure and concentration with plum, kirsch and black cherry fruit flavours framed by stylish 25% new wood. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Lafon's finest red this year is, as usual, the 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots-du-Milieu, a wine that combines the finesse of the Clos des Chênes with the power and depth of the Champans. Exhibiting a complex bouquet of cherries, smoky wild berries, rich soil tones, violets and dark chocolate, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and concentrated, with refined tannins and a sense of controlled power. Decanter: Generally the biggest and boldest of Dominique Lafon's line up of Volnays, sourced from a 3.9ha vineyard in the commune of Meursault that produced 49 barrels of wine in 2018. Producer: Domaine des Comtes Lafon Vintage: 2020 Size: 750ml ABV: 13.3% Varietal: Pinot Noir Country/Region: France, Burgundy A delicious result, with a ripe, nuanced blackberry and bramble fruit character. The texture of the wine has an exuberant, youthful freshness and vivacity. Not for long ageing, but very enjoyable on the fruit alone. In 1999 Comtes Lafon expanded into the Mâcon in southern Burgundy with a second label: Les Héritiers du Comtes Lafon.

Producer: Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Vintage: 2013 Size: 750ml ABV: 12% Varietal: Pinot Noir Country/Region: France, Burgundy Delicate and impressive depth on the nose. The finish is quite unique, rich and long lasting. De Vogüé dug up half of its Chardonnay vines in 1986, and replaced them in their own plot in the Musigny vineyard. This Musigny Blanc is one of Burgundy's most curious wines, and is commanding prices that are rivaling those in Le Montrachet. De Vogüé's history began in the mid 1400s, with money bequeathed from one Jean Moisson to the Chambolle village church, which was the site of the future domaine. Throughout the years, the growing domaine was passed down through numerous generations...

Producer: Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Ratings: WA 92 Vintage: 2015 Size: 750ml ABV: 13% Varietal: Pinot Noir Country/Region: France, Burgundy Wild, animal nose. A real outlier with wild flowers and rangy structure that seems very wilful. Very fine tannins. Very lively end with sinewy tannins. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2015 Vosne-Romanée Clos du Château had been racked two weeks prior to my visit, ready for bottling the following week. It has a delightful bouquet with red cherry, crushed strawberry and fine mineralité for a village cru. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, a touch of tangy marmalade infusing the red berry fruit, with fine structure and acidity towards the energetic finish. Give this 2-3 years in bottle and it should drink well for a decade. Producer Information Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, founded in 2000, is a relatively new wine producer in Burgundy, although the Liger-Belair family have owned vineyards in Vosne-Romanée since 1815. The domaine makes a range of grand and premier cru wines from vineyards in Nuits-Saint-Georges and Vosne-Romanée, with the tiny monopole of La Romanée providing Comte Liger-Belair's flagship wine.Louis Liger-Belair, a former general in Napoleon's army, acquired a vineyard holdings during the state sell-off of estates confiscated under the French Revolution – including the impressive Château de Vosne-Romanée. The Liger-Belairs held a good portion of land in the southern Côte de Nuits in the 19th Century, owning La Romanée and La Tâche as well as large portions of Clos de Vougeot and Chambertin, and a handful of premier cru vineyards.Much of the land was sold off in 1933 under Burgundy's complicated Napoleonic inheritance laws. What was left was farmed out to local vignerons and the wares sold to negociants.
