Producer Information Sandeman is a Port producer based in the Vila Nova de Gaia in Porto. It makes a wide variety of Ports, ranging from Ruby and Tawny to a whole host of vintage expressions. The house was founded in 1790 by George Sandeman, who started out selling Port and Sherry in London before relocating to Portugal in 1811. Today, the house is run by the seventh-generation George Sandeman, who worked in Porto and Jerez before joining the company in 1977. It was was founded in 1896 by José Ruiz-Berdejo as an almacenista, which also grew its own vines. Almacenistas generally bought young wine (Ruiz made his own) and matured them in their own soleras, before selling them to larger houses, who would either blend it with older wine, or mature it longer in their larger soleras. It wasn't until the 1950s that Ruiz's son-in-law Emilio Lustau Ortega began bottling and exporting his own wine. Now based in Jerez, Lustau is the only winery that has sites in all three cities of the Sherry triangle: Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Lustau buys fruit from vineyards, while also maintaining two of its own. The first is the Montegilillo vineyard, which is on the white limestone albariza soil local to the region. Only 125 km from the African coastline, conditions here are extreme. The porous, black volcanic soils have extremely high drainage, lowering the water content of soils that are only nourished by a few inches of rain per year. The winds that blow from the Sahara desert and Atlantic Ocean are so fierce that each vine is planted in small holes or hoyos, and further protected with stone walls. The hoyos also allow the vines to more quickly reach the organic matter located beneath the top layer of solidified lava. Virtually no vegetation can survive such inhospitable soil; the region is more reminiscent of a lunar landscape than the lush traditional image of a vineyard. The estate was founded in the 1990s by brothers Alessandro and Gian Natale Fantino. The former had been the winemaker at high-profile Barolo producer Bartolo Mascarello until the late 1990s, when he joined his brother to run his family estate.
