Producer: Harrow & Hope Vintage: NV Size: 750ml ABV: 12% Varietal: Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier Country/Region: England, Marlow There is a good depth of colour, and fresh, charming nose with a strawberry shortcake creaminess but sharper rasperry aroma too. In the mouth plenty of tension from fine acidity, but the sweet ripeness of pulpy Berry fruits and that persisting hint of creaminess makes for a lovely balance. Producer Information Harrow & Hope is truly a labor of love. It represents a small, family team who believe that, with hard work and good fortune, the flint laden slopes of Marlow will yield a sparkling wine to rival the world’s greatest. Henry and Kaye Laithwaite have literally poured their lives into this hope and making it reality. Over half a million years, this part of the Chiltern Hills has been shaped by the retreating Thames, leaving behind an environment ideal for creating world-class sparkling wine. Alas, the same flint rocks that make the single vineyard estate a dream for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, also make it a nightmare to work and cultivate – as two broken harrows testify. But then nothing worth treasuring ever came easily. Grown, picked and expertly blended by the same team on the same site, each glass of Harrow & Hope is a tribute to traditional method of viticulture and winemaking, from the unique characteristics of Marlow to the spirit of adventure. Henry comes from a family that has been obsessed with wine for 50 years. All he has ever known, thanks to his parents, is vineyards and wineries. As a toddler he staggered around Chablis Grand Cru vineyards and made his first wine (albeit from pineapples) at age 13. He met his wife Kaye at Durham University, a girl who stuck with him for years while he disappeared to Australia and France to do harvest for months on end. They married in 2008 and headed to rural France to set up their first vineyard project at Château Verniotte in Castillon, Bordeaux. Although they still love the place, they wanted to start a family in England. And just at that time it became clear, thanks to the work of others, that the chalk hills of England were capable of producing sparkling wines that were more than just good but were world-class. They then decided to begin their own sparkling wine project. They searched for some time and eventually found the perfect site on the rolling hills...

Well balanced flavors of jammy plum and blackberries with toasted coconut, baking spices and rich vanilla lead to a long, lush finish. Producer Information Robert Mondavi Winery is one of the most prominent wine producers in Napa Valley. Founded in 1966 by Robert Mondavi himself, the company is widely credited with kickstarting the modern era of California's wine industry. Robert Mondavi Winery makes a range of wines, from the value-driven Woodbridge and Private Selection labels to collectable, age-worthy wines from Napa Valley's famed To Kalon vineyard. Mondavi founded the winery after a less-than-amicable split from his family's business, Charles Krug. His stated aim was to swap quantity for quality, believing that good wine could be made in the valley. To Kalon, originally planted in 1868, became the epicentre of his estate, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc (often labeled Fumé Blanc in California) providing the backbone of the Mondavi range. Over the years, Mondavi has employed some of Napa's most famous winemakers, including Mike Grgich (of Chateau Montelena), Warren Winiarski (of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars) and Zelma Long (of Simi Winery). Today the winery makes wines from a host of grape varieties, including Merlot, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir and Moscato. The range spans vineyards throughout Napa, including sites in Carneros and Stags Leap. Mondavi's Private Selection wines fall under the sizeable Central Coast appellation, and Woodbridge wines are labelled under the generic California appellation, although many of the vineyards are located in Lodi. One of Mondavi's most high-profile contributions to Californian winemaking came via a collaboration with Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild. Opus One, the resulting wine, first appeared in 1980, and has gone on to become one of California's more iconic Cabernet Sauvignon wines, netting both high praise and high prices. Although Opus One is now a separate entity to Robert...

The palate is loaded with oak alongside ripe cherries and berries. It's pleasant although simple. Producer Information William Hill Estate is located in the southern part of Napa Valley, right off the region's iconic Silverado Trail. It makes a wide range of wines though Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are to the fore. The estate sits on 200 acres (80 hectares) of land in the southeast of the valley, on the Silverado Bench at the foor of Atlas Peak. Here a cooling influence from the San Pablo Bay promotes a long growing season. The rocky benchland soils have low fertility and cause the vines to struggle and produce small yields of highly concentrated fruit. They contrast with the rich sandy loams of the valley floor. Vineyard elevations and exposures vary, and some parcels of estate vines lie in more fertile lower areas. Each block is vinified separately. William Hill's flagship wine, Benchmark, is sourced from the best blocks in the estate vineyards. It is only made in small quantities – just over 200 cases a year. It is a blend based on Cabernet Sauvignon. Depending on the vintage, smaller amounts of Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot may also feature.

Layers of black fruit, cherries, spices and liquorice develop on the palate, making the wine very enjoyable. Well balanced & structured, with juicy sweet tannins, but a dry finish. Producer Information Producer The Reyneke label was created in 1998 when Johan Reyneke Jr. took over the farming activities from his mother and produced the first wines on the family farm, Uitzicht. The 40ha farm faces the historic town of Stellenbosch and overlooks the surrounding mountain ranges and the beautiful False Bay. Since inception, Johan has moved from farming conventionally to farming organically and finally to farming and producing his wines in accordance with biodynamic principles. He is currently one of only a few winemakers in SA who produce biodynamic wines and is considered somewhat of a ground- breaker in this regard. The aim for Reyneke has always been to express the uniqueness of the farm’s situation – the deep soil dotted with early stone age hand axes; the vines- some 40 years old; the crisp upland air – into the bottle. Reyneke believes that it is impossible to sense terroir if you are constantly changing it with chemicals. ”The intention here is to interfere as little as possible, to allow nature to be the real maker of the wine and to truly produce terroir specific wines of the highest quality.

Tasty and concentrated, with very ripe, almost sweet tannins, resulting in a rich wine; a captivating Merlot with a good finish. Producer Information Santa Rita (also referred to as Viña Santa Rita)is one of Chile's most prominent wine producers, and is based in the Alto Jahuel area of the Maipo Valley. It has vineyards in some of the country's best winegrowing regions, including Aconcagua, the Limari Valley, Apalta, the Rapel Valley and the Casablanca Valley. Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère are Santa Rita's most important grape varieties, but wines are also made from Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Chardonnay. Santa Rita was founded in 1880 by Domingo Fernández Concha. Considerable wealth from mining in the Atacama desert was flowing into Santiago at the time and a wine industry sprang up just south of the city. Santa Rita, along with its contempories Cousiño Macul and Concha Y Toro, introduced vines from France and began to make wine. Today, Santa Rita has five wineries across Chile with the combined capacity to produce and store nearly 90 million liters of wine. The company's diversity of vineyards means a diverse portfolio. For instance, Santa Rita's vineyards in the Limari Valley are planted on alluvial soils and there is a warm Mediterranean climate, so Chardonnay, Carmenère and Syrah do well. However, in Leyda Valley, the fine clay soils and the cooler climate are better suited to Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. Santa Rita's flagship wine is the Casa Real, a Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from vineyards surrounding the Maipo estate. It is aged for 14 months in new French and American oak before release, and can be happily cellared for a decade or so. Another key wine is the Bougainville Petite Sirah, a premium red made from a grape variety not usually seen in Chile. Other notable wines in the Santa Rita portfolio include the Reserva range, the Medalla Real range, and the entry-level 120 range.

Aged in oak barrels, it is pleasantly dry with vanilla aromas, bold fruitiness, and light tannins. Producer Information Biltmore Winery is a wine producer established on the site of the huge, historic Vanderbilt family estate in Asheville, North Carolina. Established as a wine estate in the 1970s by William Cecil Vandebilt, the winery now produces a range of sparkling, blended and single-varietal wines. The estate itself was established by William Cecil's grandfather, George Washington Vandebilt II, of the prominent Vandebilt family, in the late 19th Century. Vandebilt had visited the area and fallen in love with the countryside, establishing a 125,000-acre (50,500-hectare) landholding which eventually housed a vast 250-room family château. In the early 1970s a vineyard of hybrid grapes was established close to the house by William Cecil Vandebilt although, by the end of the decade, a 150-acre (60-hectare) vineyard of Vitis vinifera varieties was planted at the western end of the estate. The Biltmore Estate Wine Company was formally established in 1983 with the first official wines produced released a year later (the 1983 vintage Château Biltmore Merlot and Château Biltmore Cabernet Sauvignon). The winery is opened to the public in 1985 and sales continue to grow for the winery well into the 21st Century, with expansions in distribution throughout the US and an ever-growing range of wines. It is distinctively dark and weighty with aromas and flavors of blueberries, black tea and cocoa and spice box. Producer Information Gundlach Bundschu, based in Sonoma, is one of California's oldest family-owned wineries. It makes a range of wines in Sonoma from regionally popular grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zinfandel. The estate was founded in 1858 when Jacob Gundlach bought a 160-hectare (400-acre) property and named it Rhinefarm. Charles Bundschu joined the company a decade later, and soon married into the family. From the 1870s, the estate began experimenting with native rootstocks in the fight against phylloxera – these vines were only replanted in 1969. By 1906 the business was running a large-scale winery in San Francisco but this, along with a million gallons of wine, was destroyed in the earthquake that year, forcing Gundlach Bundschu to consolidate on a smaller scale. Gundlach Bundschu's estate vineyard, Rhinefarm, is in the southern reaches of the Sonoma Valley, on southwest-facing slopes in the foothills of the Mayacamas. It was expanded in 1997 and today there are 130 hectares (320 acres) of vineyards, broken up into 60 different plots. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zinfandel are grown on the mountainside vineyards, while the valley floor sites are planted to Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and additional plots of Merlot. The wines are released under the Sonoma Coast, Sonoma County and Sonoma Valley AVAs. Gundlach Bundschu's flagship wine is the Vintage Reserve, a limited bottling of Cabernet Sauvignon that has a different label for each vintage. Around 40,000 cases of wine are produced each year.
