Rancio is a much-prized yet elusive aroma found particularly in high end Cognacs, Armagnacs, and other brandies that were distilled with a lot of fatty acids. The aroma of “rancio” is technically the oxidized esters of fatty acids, of which Cigar Blend Batch #16 seems to have in abundance. It seems that this particular barrel was previously filled with an Armagnac that exhibited a lot of these type of notes, and so it has imparted these notes into the bourbon. As you get closer you get pancakes, damp spring meadow, and a bit of almond. There is a light spice and not too much alcohol, a very balanced nose. Palate: Chalky and balanced. Like the nose, the heat is mellow for 57%. We get white grape, a touch of sassafras, fresh cherry and clay. Blackberry comes forward a bit, but leather, honey covered pecans and duck fat carry. Finish: A lightly spiced finish of nutmeg, clove, minerality – just a hint of rose petal. It lingers for what seems like an eternity. Distillery Information Bomberger's Distillery, more recently Michter's Distillery, is a non-operating distillery facility that was, at the end of the twentieth century, believed to be the oldest remaining such building in the United States. The distillery closed in 1989 and may have since been demolished.

Returning to it after it has opened up for a few hours brings forth notes of caramel corn, burnt sugar and green apple. Palate: Some oak is immediately noticeably on the first sip, joined by all spice, black pepper, coriander and gingerbread. A few hours later it has mellowed the wood a bit, showcasing some toffee and black currant. Finish: A bit of bitterness after the swallow, with long and drawn out tingling in the back throat. It is warm in the mouth as well.
