Producer: Krug Vintage: NV Size: 750ml ABV: 12.5% Varietal: Champagne Blend Country/Region: France, Champagne It is characterized by aromas of white fruits, beeswax, marzipan, and white flowers, and offers a medium to full-bodied palate with a subtly spicy entry and a fresh, mineral finish. Producer Information Krug is one of Champagne's most prestigious houses and its wines are among the most collectible and expensive in Champagne. The house was founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, a native of the Mosel region in Germany, who had moved to France and spent some time working for Jacquesson, the leading Champagne house of the time. Krug's philosophy was that every Champagne should be the best possible expression, and eschewed the common idea of a hierarchy of Champagne. Instead, he began to craft a premium wine from a reserve of wines vinified separately by the growers themselves, a wine that would eventually become the Grande Cuvée. This wine sits alongside the likes of Dom Pérignon and Cristal at the top of the Champagne tree, and is a blend of 120 different wines from 10 or more vintages from the so-called Krug Library (a repository of still wines held prior to blending and refermenting in bottle). It is aged for six years, and is noted for its complex brioche and spice characters. Today, the wines are still vinified by individual plot, and are stored in the Krug Library. Every year, the chef de cave heads a tasting committee which decides on the final blend. This library holds reserve wines anywhere from the current vintage to those 50 years old and are produced from Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, which are all grown at Krug and used throughout the collection. Krug also makes several other Champagnes, including a rosé non-vintage and a Krug vintage, which is only produced in the best years. On top of this, there are two rare and highly collectible wines from small, walled plots considered among the best in Champagne: the Krug Clos du Mesnil and Krug Clos d'Ambonnay, produced from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir respectively. Krug is part of the wider Moët Hennessy group of companies. While the house is headquartered in Reims, a new winery is being developed at the Clos d'Ambonnay site and is due to open in 2023.

Producer: Krug Ratings: WA 96 WE 96 Size: 750ml ABV: 12% Varietal: Champagne Country/Region: France, Champagne The 168ème Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée was composed around the harvest of 2012, a beautiful year with a low yield due to the panoply of meteorological events the region endured. Frost, rain, storms and hale all hit the vineyards of Champagne in winter and spring 2012, followed by the driest ripening season since 1974, resulting in 20% fewer grapes. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Krug's NV Grande Cuvée 168ème Édition is a classic in the making, wafting from the glass with aromas of dried fruits, pear, toasted nuts, orange zest, honeycomb and freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, generous but incisive, it's deep and elegantly fleshy, with a beautifully refined mousse and an enveloping core of fruit that's complemented by the characteristic Krug patina of nutty complexity imparted by barrel fermentation. Even if this is more open out of the gates than the 2011-based 167ème edition, the 168ème edition is also the more concentrated and intense of the two. It's based on the 2012 harvest, complemented by fully 42% reserve wines—a blend of 198 wines from 11 different vintages dating back to 1996. Wine Enthusiast: In line with the producer’s practice of numbering each bottling of its flagship Grande Cuvée, this is the latest release. Following the house style, there is some marvelously impressive Pinot Noir in this rich, full blend. That gives the Champagne its luxurious feel, contrasting with the tension from the dryness and minerality. This bottling, which shows maturity, is ready to drink. Producer Information The House was established in Reims in 1843, by Joseph Krug, a visionary non-conformist with an uncompromising philosophy. Having understood that the true essence of Champagne is pleasure itself, his dream was to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. Paying close attention to the vineyard’s character, respecting the individuality of each plot and its wine, as well as building an extensive library of reserve wines from many different years allowed Joseph Krug to fulfil his dream. With a very original approach to...

Reviews: Wine Advocate: Krug's NV Grande Cuvée 170ème Édition is based on the 2014 vintage, complemented by some 45% reserve wines dating back to 1998, with the house drawing on, among many others, 2013 for structure and 2012 and 2003 for generosity. Opening in the glass with aromas of pastry cream, dried fruits, pear, warm spices, freshly baked bread and vanilla pod, it's medium to full-bodied, pillowy and fine-boned, with excellent concentration, racy acids and a precise, chiseled profile. But if the latter adjective could be applied to the 2013-base 169ème édition equally felicitously, the 2014-base 170ème is more giving and less tightly wound out of the gates and will offer more demonstrative drinking young. James Suckling: Wonderful precision and depth right away on the nose, with dried pineapple, light apricot and hints of flint and slate. Medium-bodied palate that’s firm, bright and linear. Vivid, driven acidity adds focus and perfection. Dried lemon and a wonderful, creamy texture with a mineral undertone. Extremely long, almost endless. Sophistication here. Drink or hold. Expect lush, dark berry fruit flavours with plum, rye spice and oak notes. Makes a great gift for any wine lover. Producer Information Robert Mondavi Winery is one of the most prominent wine producers in Napa Valley. Founded in 1966 by Robert Mondavi himself, the company is widely credited with kickstarting the modern era of California's wine industry. Robert Mondavi Winery makes a range of wines, from the value-driven Woodbridge and Private Selection labels to collectable, age-worthy wines from Napa Valley's famed To Kalon vineyard. Mondavi founded the winery after a less-than-amicable split from his family's business, Charles Krug. His stated aim was to swap quantity for quality, believing that good wine could be made in the valley. To Kalon, originally planted in 1868, became the epicentre of his estate, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc (often labeled Fumé Blanc in California) providing the backbone of the Mondavi range. Over the years, Mondavi has employed some of Napa's most famous winemakers, including Mike Grgich (of Chateau Montelena), Warren Winiarski (of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars) and Zelma Long (of Simi Winery). Today the winery makes wines from a host of grape varieties, including Merlot, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir and Moscato. The range spans vineyards throughout Napa, including sites in Carneros and Stags Leap. Mondavi's Private Selection wines fall under the sizeable Central Coast appellation, and Woodbridge wines are labelled under the generic California appellation, although many of the vineyards are located in Lodi. One of Mondavi's most high-profile contributions to Californian winemaking came via a collaboration with Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild. Opus One, the resulting wine, first appeared in 1980, and has gone on to become one of California's more iconic Cabernet Sauvignon wines, netting both high praise and high prices.

Aromas of flowers in bloom, ripe, dried and citrus fruits, as well as marzipan and gingerbread.

Producer Information Olivier Collard’s family has been making wine in Champagne for several generations, Olivier’s grandfather being something of a local legend in Villers-sous-Chatillon. But the Collards are anything but dynastic - rather, they are devoted to building something new with every generation. Olivier’s father set out on his own, building his own Champagne house and business outside the shadow of Olivier’s grandfather. Then, when the time came (in 1996), Olivier founded Collard-Picard with his wife Caroline Picard. Caroline’s family farmed the Côte des Blancs, while Olivier’s vines were in the Vallée de la Marne. With tremendous Chardonnay from Mesnil, and great Pinot (Noir & Meunier) to select, Olivier sets an uncompromising standard of excellence in the winery. He cuts the press juice in four (standard practice is three) and selects only the free run and gentlest cuts, preferring to sell the more phenolic juice to other houses. The results are fantastic. The Cuvée Selection sees only tank ageing, while all the other cuvées go into oak foudres for much of their élévage. The oak is used more for mouthfeel than flavour, and the richness that results often lead to comparisons to Krug.

It is just off dry, giving a soft aftertaste that comes through the final acidity. Producer Information Charles de Fère came to life in 1980 when an innovative sixth generation winemaker from Champagne, Jean-Louis, decided to start his own sparkling winery in a town called Fère-en-Tardois, just outside Champagne. Named in his honor, Cuvée Jean-Louis embodies his audacious vision of crafting high-quality sparkling wines from grapes grown throughout France, strongly believing that a more diverse sourcing strategy would allow him access to the best possible grapes each year. Northern vineyards brought freshness and elegance, while southern vineyards provided beautifully ripe fruit, body and smoothness to the wines. In honor of his son Charles, he named his winery Charles de Fère, meaning "Charles from Fère." Today, Charles de Fère wines are crafted in Burgundy at the Boisset family's state-of-the-art sparkling wine facility. True to its roots, Charles de Fère’s grapes continue to come from diverse terroirs throughout France, ensuring the best possible fruit for consistently excellent sparkling wines at a great value.

Producer Information Champagne Henri GOUTORBE is a family-owned champagne house, situated in the renowned Grand Cru village of Aÿ, in the heart of the Champagne region, 3 km from Epernay. The creation of the champagne range followed the development of the vine nursery, a family tradition born in the beginning of the 20th century and which represents the first stage of the production of champagne wines. Emile Goutorbe was already a nurseryman when his son Henri was born in Aÿ in 1922. Since the 1970s, René GOUTORBE has continued developing the vineyards and has been in charge of producing the cuvees. His children Elisabeth, Bertrand and Etienne share his passion and are involved in building the reputation of our wine and of our region. The quality of the grapes, which are harvested manually, is a result of the careful selection of the best vines, based on their genetic features and on the specificities of each plot. After pressing the grapes slowly and adapting the vinifcation in stainless steel vats to each plot’s particular features, the blend is followed by a second fermentation in the bottles. Their champagnes are aged on lees in the bottles for at least three years in their historic cellars.

Elegant nose intermixing red fruits and dried fruits with a pastry touch. Supple, rounded, ample and aroma-driven palate. The style is forthright, generous and faultless. Producer Information Champagne Charles de Cazanove, though now based in Reims, was founded in Avizé, in the Côte des Blancs subregion of Champagne, in 1811 by Charles Gabriel de Cazanove – a 24-year-old glassmaker. Nearly one hundred years later, mirroring the royal patronage of many Champagne houses of the late 19th Century, King Edward VII of England was having stock specially imported from France with his own personal label. From the 1950s the Martini and Rossi company gained increasing control of the house. It was owned by Moët and Chandon from 1983 to 1985 before being sold to an Epernay distributor. In 2004, it was purchased by the Rapeneau family, owners of the GH Martel Champagne house. It now falls within the wider GH Martel group. The Charles de Cazanove portfolio cosists of three basic tiers of wines, which are topped by the Grand Apparat cuvée and the deluxe Stradivarius range. Grand Apparat is a predominantly Pinot Noir-based Champagne Blend (with over 50 percent Pinot Noir, 30 percent Chardonnay and just over ten percent Pinot Meunier) while Stradivarius is Chardonnay-dominant (roughly 70 percent Chardonnay to 30 percent Pinot Noir). In addition, chef de cave Christophe Rapeneau makes a sibling range labelled as Champagne Vieille France, which is now marketed separately but is often listed as a sub-brand of Charles de Cazanove.

On the palate, it has an excellent soft, creamy mousse, good acidity, and a clean finish. Reviews: Wine Spectator: Gorgeous aromas and flavors of pencil shavings, candied citrus and honey highlight this classy, stylish Champagne. Its balanced, beautifully integrated and long, with a finesse and freshness. Producer Information Taittinger is one of Champagne's most famous houses. Based in the city of Reims, Taittinger is known for its Chardonnay-dominant cuvées, the pinnacle of which is the blanc de blancs prestige cuvée, Comtes de Champagne. The family-owned estate has approximately 290 hectares (710 acres) of vines, around half of which is planted to Pinot Noir, with Chardonnay and a small amount of Pinot Meunier making up the rest. These vineyards contribute 50 percent of Taittinger's output, with the rest coming from growers who have historical relationships with the house. Taittinger's Brut Reserve NV is composed of 40 percent Chardonnay, with the two Pinots making up the remainder. This makes for a fresh and reasonably delicate house style. In addition to this, Taittinger makes a range of Champagne styles, including a demi-sec, several rosés and an array of single-vineyard, vintage and otherwise limited-edition wines. The Comtes de Champagne is Taittinger's top wine, and was first made in the 1952 vintage. The grapes are mostly sourced from grand cru vineyards across Avizé, Chouilly and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Oak is used sparingly to impart flavors of brioche and grilled almonds, rather than to add any tannins or weight. The bottles are kept for at least 10 years in the underground chalk galleries beneath the former Saint-Nicaise Abbey in Reims (now the Taittinger headquarters). Taittinger's flagship is considered one of the most consistent blanc de blancs (effectively a Chardonnay-only Champagne)...

Vilmart produces wines from 11 hectares (27 acres) of vineyards in and around the village, with about 60-percent planted to Chardonnay and 40-percent to Pinot Noir. It is a so-called "grower" Champagne house, which means it only makes wines from vineyard plots that it owns, rather than buying in grapes, which is common for the larger houses. Vilmart's standard cuvée is Chardonnay-dominant, with Pinot Noir contributing around 30-percent. On top of this, the house produces a range of other wines, including the flagship Grand Cellier d'Or vintage wine, also Chardonnay-dominant, made from the oldest plots of vines. The base wine is aged for 10 months in 228-liter oak barrels before the secondary fermentation. There are numerous other wines including the Rubis rosé.

Elegant, but with good intensity and a moderate, nut-tinged finish.

Vivacious nosewith aromas of dried flowers. Powerful palate with strong freshfruit. Producer Information The beginning of it all dates back to approximately the middle of the 20th century, to 1947 to be precise, the year in which Henri Blin, born and raised in a family of winemakers, had the intuition to bring together 28 other winemakers like him, to found the maison “H. Blin & C.”. From then to today, through seven decades, the cooperative has now come to include around one hundred and twenty members, and can count on a vineyard area that covers over 120 hectares in total. The scenario is that of the territory of the French municipality of Vincelles, so we find ourselves in the Marne Valley, where the Pinot Meunier grapes dominate undisputedly, a vineyard variety known for being able to produce wines that are certainly structured and full-bodied, but also subtle and fragrant at the same time (also offering interesting ideas for pairing with Champagne ). Pursuing a philosophy that provides for maximum respect for the environment and ecosystem, among the rows of the “H. Blin” has always banned any type of chemical substance, and every practice responds to the dictates of sustainable agriculture, so that the bunches that are harvested are pure, concentrated and rich in all their natural and organoleptic nuances. In the cellar, from the raw material to bottling and marketing, every production step is organized in the name of total traceability. By vinifying exclusively the grapes grown by the house's members, on average around 500 thousand bottles are produced annually. Simply excellent Champagnes , both traditional on the one hand - with the Brut, Rosé, Reserve and “Charles Vercy” cuvées - and innovative on the other hand, with the “Quintessence” and “L'Esprit Nature Bio”. Labels, those that lead back to the name of “H. Blin”, with absolute charm, capable of earning the highest recognition from industry critics, but above all expressive like few others of what is the truest essence of the entire Marne Valley.

The palate of Domaine Carneros by Taittinger Cuvee de la Pompadour Brut Rose displays peach, apricot, watermelon and a touch of underlining honey for a soft, delicate mouthfeel and a smooth, long finish. Reviews: Wine Enthusiast: Aromas of stone and rose lead to a rich, unctuous midpalate of wild strawberry, tangerine and Meyer lemon in this persistently bright blend of Pinot Noir (60%) and Chardonnay (40%). Elegant and lively, it offers complexity within an inviting, approachable context of tremendous likability. Producer Information Domaine Carneros is a Napa Valley estate founded by one of Champagne's most world-renowned houses – Taittinger. Domaine Carneros encompasses five vineyards in the Carneros AVA planted to a combination of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The estate originated with Claude Taittinger's selection of a 138 acre (56 hectare) parcel of land in 1987. Since then, the core focus of Domaine Carneros has centered on the creation of methóde traditionnelle sparkling wines, spanning Champagne styles from Brut to Blanc de Blancs. In 1992 the estate's wine range was supplemented by the addition of a still Pinot Noir wine. Following this foray into still wine, Domaine Carneros expanded its collection to include a limited production Pinot Noir rosé and single-vineyard Chardonnay wines. The 350 acre (142 hectare) estate boasts 225 acres (91 hectares) of vineyard devoted to Pinot Noir and 125 acres (51 hectares) planted with Chardonnay. The grapes are all harvested by hand either at night or in the early hours of the morning in order to maintain cool must temperatures on arrival in the winery. In the winery, the grapes are whole-bunch pressed (without crushing or destemming) in a membrane press. Only the initial pressing of the grapes is used for the production of each wine. The wines are then aged according to their particular style. For example, Domaine Carneros's Brut, Rosé, Ultra Brut and Blanc de Noir sparkling wines undergo three years of aging in bottle, whereas the Blanc de Blancs is aged in bottle for six years. The lingering finish echoes the ripe fruit and mineral character. Reviews: Wine Advocate: Based on the 2017 vintage and disgorged in May 2021, the latest release of Péters's NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Cuvée de Réserve continues to show very nicely. Bursting with aromas of crisp orchard fruit, honeycomb, white flowers and fresh bread, it's medium-bodied, pillowy and generous, with a refined mousse and an elegantly fleshy core of fruit. This is a fine-boned, weightless blanc de blancs that's disarmingly easy to drink. Decanter: Made up, half and half, of base wine from the sunny 2018 harvest, and reserve wine from Rodolphe’s Perpetual Reserve which goes back to 1988, this is one of the most consistently excellent NV wines on the market. Its current iteration is especially impressive, floral, chalky, upstanding, and very complex; the palate sharing notes of dried apricot, plum and lemon pith with more developed intimations of sour honey and patisserie. An exemplary wine with real purity and precision on the finish. Producer Information Pierre Péters is a Champagne house in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger particularly known for its range of Blanc de Blancs Chardonnay wines. In the last decade or so the estate has risen quickly into the top flight, garnering attention from international critics. The Péters family has grown grapes on the Côte des Blancs for six generations, beginning in 1858 when Gaston Péters of Luxembourg married into a family of local growers. The wines were labeled Camille Péters from 1919 to 1944, when it was renamed for the new proprietor, Pierre Péters. To this day, the house remains family-owned and run. The wines are made exclusively from estate vineyards, which is unusual in the region. In total, Pierre Péters has just over 19 hectares (47 acres) of Chardonnay vines...

Not a powerhouse, but should show well to sip or to enjoy with light fare. Producer Information Françoise Bedel, a single mother of two sons and a new winery, was in a tight spot. Her oldest son was very sick, and she could find no doctor or hospital that could cure him. There were many weeks and months of searching for an answer. Finally, as a last desperate measure, she took him to see an older couple in a nearby village who practiced homeopathic medicine. Under their guidance, Vincent, Françoise’s son, was soon on the mend. She swore off modern medicine and, within months, had removed every chemical or synthetic material from her tiny winery; Françoise became a biodynamic winemaker before virtually anyone in the wine trade had ever heard of the term. Today the estate is still small (8.4 hectares), and Françoise is doing things her way. While others champion the better-known Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, she is in love with Pinot Meunier, and this variety features heavily at this address. This is not uncommon as the Marne Valley is known for the quality of its Pinot Meunier, and Françoise only farms small amounts of Chardonnay (13%) and Pinot Noir (9%). In addition to her reliance on Pinot Meunier, Françoise is also patient with her Champagnes, and most bottles spend more than six years on the lees and frequently far longer. Low or zero dosage is the rule, chez Bedel. Located on the extreme western edge of Champagne, Françoise farm vines near the village of Crouttes-sur-Marne on the far edge of the Marne Valley – they are far closer to Paris than the city of Reims! The terroir here is dominated by clay with touches of limestone and gravel. Combined with the Pinot Meunier grape, this leads to wines with heft and weight with long, lingering acidity. We don’t often think of decanting Champagne, but these are wines that are transcendent when exposed to air – they are wines of great soul and depth.

It's yellow fruit is layered with toastiness. It has a rich feel, very much in the Billiot style, and a complex, compact character. Producer Information The history of Domaine H. Billiot begins at the beginning of the 20th century when Louis Billiot and his press in Ambonnay produced grape juice for Mumm and Moët & Chandon. Even then, he was producing a small amount of his own champagne. It can be attributed to his grandson Henri that the company changed from a grape supplier to a Recolte manipulator. Son Serge took over the vineyard work in 1954, expanded the champagne portfolio and brought the winery to its current reputation. In 2011 the scepter was handed over to daughter Laetitia, whose name also bears the house's Prestige Cuvée. Since then she has tried to rejuvenate the image and the external presentation of the domain. Billiot's five hectares are all in Ambonnay and are spread over 18 plots. With the exception of one parcel, they are all located in the top-quality middle section of the respective vineyard, so Billiot's champagne transports the classic Ambonnay terroir particularly well: “The classic Ambonnay terroir produces vinous, powerful champagne,” says Laetitia, “but they can also be very fine and rich in finesse and have great storage potential. " H. Billiot's champagnes are mainly characterized by Pinot Noir, are very vinous, full-bodied and full of character. They are expanded in the enamel tank, do not undergo malolactic fermentation, are not filtered and are mixed with about 7 to 9 g / L dosage. They are full of flavor and so complex and multi-layered at the top that you can get lost in them. Facts: Ambonnay, R.M., 5 ha., 45,000 bottles, 100% Grand Cru, 75% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay
