Well known for sparkling wines, Korbel makes a range of still wines from various international varieties like Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Korbel also produces an extensive range of brandies. The business was founded in 1882 by the three Korbel brothers, immigrants from what was then known as Bohemia in Europe. They began making sparkling wine using the traditional French méthode champenoise. This remains a cornerstone of production. The most expensive sparkling wine on the list, Le Premier, a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Beringer's success was in part because of the federal license they obtained to make wine for religious purposes during Prohibition (1920-1933). The wine was sold to churches for sacramental purposes. After Prohibition was repealed, Beringer became the first winery to offer public tours – a significant contribution to the beginnings of modern Napa Valley tourism. Beringer was bought by the beverage manufacturer Nestlé in the early 1970s, and since then it has changed ownership numerous times. It is currently owned by Treasury Wine Estates, one of the largest North American wine suppliers, which also owns, among other labels, Penfolds, Wolf Blass and Stags' Leap. In 2015, Mark Beringer, the great-great-grandson of Jacob Beringer, became chief winemaker. As well was having wide distribution, Beringer is known for its range of quality wines. The company produces a wide range of wines from grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay, but it is best known for its high-quality wines made from Riesling. It was founded as the American Wine Growers in 1954 by the merger of two companies that were set up following the repeal of Prohibition in the 1930s: the National Wine Company and the Pomerelle Wine Company. Before the merger, the National Wine Company had planted Vitis vinifera grapes in the Columbia Valley. However it was legendary winemaker Andre Tchelistcheff, as a consultant, who introduced higher quality vinifera wines in 1967. These were produced under the name Ste.
