Producer Information The family vineyard is situated in Uruguay, just 50km from the ocean and its cooling breezes, from which it also takes its name ’Winery of the Winds’. Pablo Fallabrino has 30 hectares of land with 17 hectares of vines including Chardonnay, Moscato Bianco, Arneis, Gewürztraminer, Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon, Ruby Cabernet, Barbera, Nebbiolo and Dolcetto; the latter he only planted this last year. Unfortunately, he said, they weren’t very good quality vines and he lost the whole plantation, but he plans to try again. The vines are planted high in pergola to protect against frost. Although they hadn’t had serious problems with this in the past, lower pockets now do and so they are now looking for higher plantation areas. He tells us a sad story that in the 1920s, on their 50th wedding anniversary, his grandparents, recently arrived from Alessandria in Piemonte, lost everything to a massive frost. His father subsequently also planted vineyards in 1947 and in the fifties and sixties was the largest winery in Uruguay, producing ten million bottles per year. Pablo came here in 1995 following the deaths of his father and grandfather and started to work the land. In 1997, he built his own winery and began producing wine; previously he had only sold grapes. He shows us the winery building, telling us that he had bought the tanks and other equipment in 1997, only to have a huge storm destroy the roof, which took years to build up again.

Its generally one-off bottlings, called botas, are accompanied by a chronologically allocated number and the location and/or name of the winery. The group also produces a number of wines and spirits by itself or in collaboration with other producers. Bricco Mondalino takes its name from the highest point in the Mondalino hill, bricco meaning hilltop in the local dialect. Today the vineyards cover 44.5 acres, all in elevated, sunny positions on white calcareous terrain, rich in fossilized seashells and marine deposits. The vineyards enjoy a favorable microclimate and good rainfall (approximately 16 inches per year). Bricco Mondalino focuses on producing native varieties and has an average production of 100,000 bottles per year. Recently, the winery has undergone significant innovations, starting with vineyard management. Mauro Gaudio explains that “Global warming has brought about a constant increase in alcohol, and we want to make sure there’s quality and concentration without alcoholic excess. It produces an extensive white-wine portfolio of single-vineyard Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Friulano and Malvasia Istriana amoungst others. The family-owned estate has been overseen by Gianfranco Gallo since 1978. The vineyards underwent significant development and improvement in 1982, and a new winery was constructed in 1989. From 1990, Vie di Romans has focused largely on the production of single-vineyard wines from its 50 hectares (124 acres) of vineyards located close to the town of Mariano del Friuli. These estate vineyards are planted in a high-density to ensure a low yield of grapes with concentrated flavor compounds are produced. They are found planted on a broad terrace of iron-rich red soils situated on the northern bank of the Isonzo river. In addition to the single-vineyard white collection, the estate also produces a selection of varietal Merlot and Pinot Nero. The Vie de Romans Chardonnay is the flagship of the wine portfolio, sourced from estate vineyards in Friuli Isonzo. It spends 9 months aging on lees prior to bottling and will happily cellar for the next decade or two.
