Producer: Champagne Joseph Perrier Vintage: 2010 Size: 750ml ABV: 12% Varietal: Chardonnay Country/Region: France, Champagne The colour is of a shining, pale yellow colour. The effervescence of the bubbles is very delicate. The aromatic bouquet is harmonious and complex with floral fragrances that evoke the freshness of honeysuckle and the sweetness of acacia, highlighted by intense citrus notes. A frank, round and complex attack precedes a palate that combines fruity and woody-vanilla notes with bitter and sour flavours. The finish is fresh and entices with its structure and its creamy and melting feel. Producer Information Champagne Joseph Perrier is a family-owned Champagne house in Châlons-en-Champagne, the capital of the Marne. It was founded by Joseph Perrier in a former coaching inn in 1825. The business flourished quickly, especially in overseas markets. In 1888 Paul Pithois took the reins and ran the business untill 1925, when his sons took over. In 1980 Jean-Claude Fourmon succeeded his uncle Georges Pithois, Paul's grandson. In turn his son Benjamin Fourmon is the CEO today. The estate vineyards are located above the river on the northern slopes of the Vallé de la Marne in the Châlons-en-Champagne commune. They cover around 23 hectares (57 acres), satisfying about 30 percent of total production needs. The chalky soils here are well-suited to the classic Champagne varieties, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. The vines are tended to and picked by hand, and the wines are handled by traditional methods, including manual riddling. Joseph Perrier's cellars, which date back to Roman times, extend almost three kilometers (2 miles) into the chalk hills. They do not extend deeply underground and benefit from chimneys allowing light in and air to circulate.

James Suckling: Plenty of green-apple and pear aromas with vanilla and cream undertones. Kiwi, too. Medium to full body with oily character and a fruity undertone. Hints of vanilla and crushed stone. It was classified a Grand Cru Classé de Graves in 1959 for both its red (a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend) and white (a classic white Bordeaux Blend) wines. The estate has around 60 hectares (148 acres) under vine on gravel- and clay-rich soils, with most of that dedicated to the red grape varieties. While Cabernet Sauvignon makes up the bulk of red plantings (63 percent), there is also Merlot (30 percent) as well as two percent Cabernet Franc and five percent Petit Verdot. White plantings are almost three quarters (70 percent) Sauvignon Blanc and 30 percent Semillon. Grapes are harvested by hand and vinified in lots to ensure the best possible wine – Domaine de Chevalier has a reputation for making good wines even in average vintages. Barrel-aging is for up to 18 months with 35 percent new french oak. Domaine de Chevalier is notable for having kept its 'domaine' title, which is more at home in Burgundy than it is in Bordeaux. Chevalier comes from the Gascon word for knight, an homage to a trail on the property believed to have been used by knights in the 12th to 14th centuries. In 1983, the domaine came under its current ownership when it was bought by the Bernard family, who renovated the winery and expanded the vineyard.

The estate was established at a historic 1898 Spanish-style winery in the heart of the region. In 1992, Chandon Argentina of Moët & Chandon began the Terrazas de los Andes project to discover the best sites for Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Torrontés, and Chardonnay in the region. Soon after the winery was established in 1996, Terrazas de los Andes partnered with Château Cheval Blanc to produce the Cheval des Andes a blend of Malbec with Bordeaux varieties. The Terrazas de los Andes wine portfolio is led by the Grand range, a duo of varietal Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon wines that are sourced from the best high-altitude plots of the estate vineyards. Producer: La Maison de Grand Esprit Vintage: 2017 Size: 750ml ABV: 13% Varietal: Rose Blend Country/Region: France, Cotes de Provence It feels crisp and breezy, with lime-leaf scents, barely ripe strawberry flavors and mouthwatering salinity. Producer Information To the average consumer, French wine is the pinnacle of quality – and the pinnacle of intimidation. From the outside, France can seem like a wealth of villages and vineyards, crus and châteaux, varieties and vintages that require knowledge only held by the most serious of wine drinkers. International wine company Treasury Wine Estates aims to change the perception of French wine as a stuffy, pretentious category with the launch of Maison de Grand Esprit, coming to the U.S. this summer. The company’s first French wine brand, Maison de Grand Esprit will break down the barriers surrounding luxury French wine by offering three tiers of cuvées from the country's most iconic regions. It is not uncommon for a wine brand to span multiple areas within a larger region, like Bouchard Père et Fils does in Burgundy, for instance. But Maison de Grand Esprit takes this concept one step further, with a mission to produce luxury wines in all of France’s most iconic regions, including Burgundy, Bordeaux, the Rhône Valley, and Provence. The brand first launched last year in Asia and officially launches in the U.S. this summer with consumer events in Chicago, Atlanta, and New York. Until now, Treasury Wine Estates has focused almost exclusively on New World wine projects in Australia, New Zealand, and California. (The company does have one project in Tuscany.) Thus, it hopes to bring a New World mentality of structure and sourcing to French wine with Maison de Grand Esprit, without losing an Old World style of winemaking. Rather than the predominantly older, male consumer base that Treasury Wine Estates outlines as the typical French wine consumer, the brand targets young yet educated consumers seeking out luxury wine.

The nose is open, dominated by fresh fruits with notes of cherry, plum and blackcurrant. The notes of aging in barrels are very discreet and harmonious. This wine stands out in its aromatic expression, clear intensity and remarkable freshness. Producer Information In 1999 Benjamin de Rothschild already had operations with Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons in South Africa and Laurent Dassault was searching for a new project. Together, they purchased property in the center west of the Province of Mendoza and became some of the very first French to invest in the Vista Flores region in the Uco Valley. Their goal was to create a New World "grand cru", an excellent Argentinian wine, from this little-known but remarkable terroir in the foothills of the Andes. This region's high potential was first identified by oenologist Michel Rolland who launched the “Clos de Los Siete” project. Beguiled by the challenge of creating a vineyard from scratch, they joined forces and became partners. These immense virgin lands gave birth to the Flechas de Los Andes vineyard which now independently charts its own path, extolling all the subtleties and specificities of its terroir. Bodega Flechas de los Andes enjoys an unrivaled setting and a unique terroir thanks to a dry climate, tempered by high altitudes. Here, Malbec, a traditional Argentine grape variety, has found an ideal place to thrive.

Reviews: Decanter: Winemaker Hervé Birnie-Scott blends fruit from four Uco Valley vineyards for this Reserva Malbec, which is hand-harvested and spends 12 months in French oak. From a slightly warmer year than usual, there's a savoury edge to the black fruit aromas, plus hints of violets and vanilla. Expressive and harmonious palate, with nicely judged oak and a fresh, floral edge to the concentrated black fruit. Fine, medium tannins, with notes of chamois leather, spice and mocha on the finish. Great for steak! James Suckling: This is the most solid malbec I have seen in this bottling with dark-berry and spice aromas and flavors. Medium-to full-bodied, firm and very silky and well defined, thanks to the super fine tannins. Reviews: Wine Advocate: I don't really see grandness in the 2019 Grand Malbec, but at least the wine has a lot less oak than in past years. It's still toasty and ripe—not my favorite combination—after maturing for 18 months in oak barrels and vats, 40% of them new. The fruit is ripe at 14% alcohol, and the wine has a soft and mellow palate with some creaminess and a dry, serious finish. James Suckling: Blackberry, tar and basil with some other herbs on the nose. Full-bodied with juicy tannins and a fine-velvet texture. It’s long and polished with a pretty and rather classy finish. Full body. Bright finish. Producer Information Cheval des Andes is one of Argentina's most famous wines. It is made from vineyards in Mendoza and is a joint venture between Saint-Emilion's Château Cheval Blanc, the legendary Premier Grand Cru Classé A, and Argentina's Terrazas de los Andes. The Bordeaux blend wine is made with grapes from vines as much as 80 years old, planted in the Las Compuertas vineyard in Luján de Cuyo. The high-altitude vineyard, located in the foothills of the Andes, covers 50 hectares (124 acres), and is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Merlot. The sandy loam soils provide good drainage, causing root systems to dig deep into the ground in search of hydration, making for healthy vines and concentrated grapes. The diurnal temperature variation at the estate, with warm days and cool nights, allows grapes to ripen while retaining acidity. Water for irrigation is provided from Andes snowmelt. The composition of Cheval des Andes varies from vintage to vintage, although the blend is most commonly dominated by Malbec or Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented by variety, and aged for six months in barrel. After blending, the wine is aged for a further year in up to 60 percent new French oak. The final assemblage is aged in new French oak for an additional six months, then bottled unfiltered and aged at least 18 months before release.

Producer Information As owners of the iconic Châteaux, Pavie, Pavie-Decesse, Monbousquet, Bellevue-Mondotte, and Clos Lunelles, Gérard Perse and the Perse Family have redefined their legacy. Beginning in the 90's, Gérard and his family set forth to re-invigorate some of the most sought after wines of the Right Bank. Tremendous investment in each winery, vineyard, as well as the expertise of the legendary Bordeaux winemaker Michel Rolland, has reestablished each Châteaux as the best of their appellations. Fast-forward to 2008, Monsieur Perse along with his team saw a re-imagined expression of the complexity of terroirs found on the Right Bank. By selecting premium holdings from young vines of Château Pavie and blending the fruit with two estate-owned vineyards in Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux, Esprit de Pavie was born. The sites selected for Esprit de Pavie from the Dordogne Valley -- characterized by sandy-gravelly foothills, clay hillsides and clay-limestone plateau -- manifest supple fruit, dense tannin and structure, with intense depth of flavor. On the palate, the feel is finely grained with a leaner, more agile flow than in previous years, while the freshness brings plenty of energy before the lengthy finish of fruit and country herb aromas. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2019 Cheval des Andes had a more reductive vinification and élevage, making the wine a bit shy and in need of time to open up, as one of their objectives was to make it more age-worthy. Another objective is to get to a 50/50 blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, which they achieved in this vintage for the first time, going back to the initial character of the wine that was the idea of Argentinean winemaker Roberto de la Mota; so, they are closing the circle and going back to the initial idea, with more implication from the Cheval Blanc team. This is the first vintage fully under the charge of the new French winemaker, Gerald Gabillet,....The wine is young and tender and a bit oaky, which Gerald attributed to the reductiveness; it's ripe without excess, with around 14.2% alcohol, mellow acidity and velvety tannins. There's more Cabernet here, so the aromatic expression can be something between 2017 and 2018, but Cabernet marks the palate a lot and makes the wine more age-worthy, as it provides the structure and length that the Malbec lacks. So, the wine might be less accessible when young and should develop slowly in bottle. It's tasty and supple and has the ingredients and the balance for what they are aiming for. ….The way they want to describe the wine is the Argentinean expression of Cheval Blanc. Give this a year to two to soften and open, but already pretty. Polished texture at the end. Producer Information Terrazas de los Andes is an Argentinian wine producer based in the country's key winegrowing region of Mendoza. Both spend between 16 to 18 months aging in new French oak prior to bottling and will happily cellar for a few decades. Other ranges include the value-driven Altos del Plata, composed of varietal Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The range is designed to be approachable with fruit-forward wines suited to a broad range of consumers. The vineyards range between 1970 to 5900 feet (600 to 1800 meters) above sea level, located in the Luján de Cuyo and Uco Valley subregions, as well as in Cafayate in the region of Salta.

Slightly plush on the palate, this is balanced despite showing raw tannins. Producer Information We are in the heart of the Rioja Alta region, a short distance from Haro and Briones, in a small town with a long winemaking history, as witnessed by its 17th and 18th century manor houses. Since 2014, this winery has taken on the legacy of the old Paternina house and the historic Conde de los Andes brand, one of the great names in Rioja winemaking and wine culture. Today, with the help of the Murúa family, Bodegas Ollauri-Conde de los Andes takes up a tradition that goes back several centuries. It was in 1896 when Federico Paternina created the modern winery where his ancestors had been making and storing wine since the 15th century. Bodegas Ollauri-Conde de los Andes is the sum of respect for the historical heritage, the commitment to the custody of hundreds of thousands of bottles of old vintages and the renovation that symbolises the current range of wines. Sourced from small plots of old vineyards planted in high places, they represent a new interpretation of Rioja Alta wine under the recovered brand of Conde de los Andes.

Full-bodied with firm, velvety tannins that are tight-grained. Creamy and beautiful. Currant and graphite flavors come through. Lightly chewy at the end. Producer Information Peter Michael Winery is a highly regarded wine producer located in northern California, on the border of Napa and Sonoma counties in the Knights Valley AVA. The winery produces a number of single-vineyard wines including Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blends, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc – Semillon blends. The winery was established by Peter Michael and his wife Margaret in 1982. Michael's background was in technology and had founded the digital picture company Quantel in the UK in the early 1970s. He arrived in California in the early days of the Silicon Valley tech boom and soon invested in a winery. The winery released its first vintage in 1987 and has since enjoyed a high level of critical acclaim. Three of Michael's wines have ranked in the top 10 of Wine Spectator's Top 100, and since the 1995 vintage, 14 wines have been rated 98 points or higher by US wine critic Robert Parker. Peter Michael's property in the Knights Valley AVA is at a much higher altitude than many others in the area, with vineyards reaching as high as 2000 feet (610m) above sea level. The result is cooler growing temperatures, which allows for wines in the more restrained old world style. In 2006, Peter Michael began planting a vineyard in Fort Ross-Seaview AVA in Sonoma County. In 2009 added an Oakville AVA vineyard in Napa Valley. Peter Michael Winery remains a family-owned estate that is now run by Peter's son Paul and wife Emily (the inspiration for the Belle-Fille Chardonnay label and vineyard). Only a small number of cases reach the retail market as the majority are set aside for the mailing list and long-term restaurant clientele.

Very intense aromatic expression. The bouquet of aromas of red fruit (cherry, wild strawberries) and spices is intensified by the freshness and complexity of the wine. On the palate, the balance of this wine is predominant. A supple and fresh attack add a lovely liveliness. Soft, precise tannins bring an attractive structure with an elegant finish.Blend: 70% Malbec and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2018 Cheval des Andes is a blend of 70% Malbec and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon fermented in small lots in 3,000- to 8,000-liter tanks and matured 40% in 225-liter oak barrels, 40% in 400-liter oak barrels and the remaining 20% in 2,500-liter oak vats for 13 months. Ninety percent of the oak used was French and the rest a blend of Austrian, Slovenian and German oak, 50% of it new. 2018 has been one of the best vintages in recent times in Mendoza, and the wine shows it. It's a cooler vintage, and the wine has improved in freshness and elegance without losing any clout. It's 14.5% alcohol and has a pH of 3.73. This is young, juicy, elegant and balanced and still has some herbal and toasted notes; it's medium to full-bodied, with the creamy and luxurious texture of the modern Bordeaux, ultra fine tannins and a long, dry and precise finish. It's still undeveloped and seems to have all the components and the balance between them for a long and positive development in bottle. With wines like this, I sometimes wish I had a time machine so I could see them in 20 years from now... I think this is the finest Cheval des Andes I've ever tasted. James Suckling: This is a plush, rich Cheval with blueberry and floral aromas and flavors. HInts of tar and fresh lavender. Full body.
