Producer: Palace Hotel Bucaco Vintage: 2015 Size: 750ml ABV: 13.5% Varietal: Portuguese Red Blend Country/Region: Portugal, Douro The vintage is readily apparent in the deep hue and dense, ripe fruit (query a touch over-ripe, with meaty, black olive?) Powerful supporting tannins cradle the fruit and lend a touch of grip to the finish. Producer Information The Buçaco (Bussaco) Palace Hotel is one of Portugal’s most striking bits of Neo-Manueline architecture. It’s almost impossibly ornate, with incredibly elaborate stone carvings rammed in just about everywhere. But despite its over-the-top nature, it’s quite magical. Originally there was a convent on this hilltop site, but the current building was constructed as a palace for one of Portugal’s queens in the late 19th century, but a change of political fortunes meant that it was turned instead into a hotel, exactly 100 years ago in 1917.One of the inside secrets of Portugal’s wine trade was for a long time the wines of Bussaco. Right from the beginning, Alexandre de Almeida (the owner of the hotel, and whose grandson Alexandre is now running the family hotel chain) wanted to offer local food and drink, and so the hotel began making their own wines, creating the current labels in 1920 (they are the same every year: the vintage is indicated by means of a small white sticker). These, a pair of red and white wines, have always been a blend of Dão and Bairrada, and they had a reputation for their longevity. But you could only get them and drink them in the hotel dining room. Occasional bottles got out, and they were the source of great excitement. This all changed with the challenging financial situation in 2008. Suddenly the hotel began releasing stocks of old wines, and they began to make their way onto the market. For a while, there were some nice older vintages available, but this supply has now dried up, and Bussaco are releasing current vintage only. These wines have traditionally aged beautifully. The winemaking changed a bit back in 2001, though, with a switch from large old vats to small new oak for the white. Is the wine better? It’s impressive, but will take time to shed the oak, and may age well. But it’s different, so only time will tell. I love the story and the old bottles, though: this historical wine holds a...

Medium-bodied and balanced, with very fine grainy tannins. Producer Information The winery is part of the family home whose oldest part, the cave smashed by hand, goes back to the seventeenth century. There our made wine in clay jars. The current project led by Jose Benavides Jiménez - Landi and Daniel Gómez Jiménez - Landi started in 2004 with the sole aim of producing wines based on respect for nature, tradition and balance with our environment. It is precisely the belief that nature offers its best gifts when it is grown with respect that leads us to make, in the 27 acres that we own, organic farming and get started in biodynamic practices. The fruits thus obtained express the characteristics of soil and climate, land and sky. Our work focuses on the Garnacha, the queen variety in Mentrida PDO, without neglecting other varieties that complement it as the Syrah. The philosophy of elaboration is that of reflecting the properties of our land, looking for elegance and balance in the wines.

Producer: Bucaco Vintage: 2017 Size: 750ml ABV: 13.5% Varietal: Portuguese White Blend Country/Region: Portugal, Various Producer Information Alexandre de Almeida, founder of the oldest hotel chain in Portugal with the same name, began producing Buçaco Wines in 1917 when he realized what the Hotel Winery concept meant after many visits to European hotels, including those on the French “Côte D’Azure”. This gave him the idea to open his own winery at the Buçaco Palace, starting to produce varieties that would come to be known as the glorious “Buçaco wines”. In the early 20th century, one of the most interesting pages on Portuguese wine was created, the wine that was to become a much-envied icon, but which was always intentionally kept out of the limelight. Its creator, Alexandre de Almeida, adopted the concept of linking luxury hotels to a winery with their own wine. If we look back, ever since the first harvests we realized the importance of this icon that was served to kings, queens and heads of state, as proven by menus, proudly kept at the Hotel Palace Buçaco. Buçaco wines were just that: objects of culture limited to very restricted circles, the elite. Their fantastic and noble labels still bear the symbol of their nobility to this day and age.

The brand was founded in 2004 by Jorge Ordoñez and Rafael Canizares to highlight lesser-known Spanish wine-producing regions in export markets. It has a diverse portfolio of brands, but production is largely focused on the Monastrell and Tempranillo grape varieties. Many of Volver's wines are made from the 110-hectare (272-acre) vineyard in La Mancha. Here, the soils are sandy and iron- and limestone-rich, and are planted to low yielding, dry-farmed Tempranillo vines. The best section of the land, the Finca Los Juncares vineyard, is 29ha (72 acres) and includes Tempranillo vines planted in 1957. The wine made from this vineyard, the Bodegas Volver is aged 18 months in French oak barrels and bottled unfiltered. Paso a Paso and Venta Morales are also made in the La Mancha vineyards. These two labels both produce a range of Tempranillo wines, but a couple of white wines are also made under the Paso a Paso label from Verdejo and Macabeo. In Alicante, Bodegas Volver make the Tarima Hill label, which is focused on Monastrell, a variety that does very well in the extreme climate here. Tarima Hill makes several Monastrell wines, and also has a range of white wines made from Merseguera, Macabeo and Moscatel. Bodegas Volver produces another Alicante wine, Triga, which is a blend of 85 percent Monastrell and 15 percent Cabernet Sauvignon from the bodega's oldest vines, some planted in 1925. Bodegas Volver's Jumilla vineyards are planted to Monastrell with vines ranging in age from 25-35 years. The region experiences extreme temperature fluctuations with little rain.

Its flagship wine, Monte Bello, is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated Bordeaux blend known for delivering the complexity and elegance of Bordeaux wines, as well as typical California fruit intensity. It is also well known for its range of Zinfandel wines and Zinfandel-based blends, led by the Geyserville cuvée. Wines made from Petite Sirah, Carignan and a Grenache – Mataro blend have also been longstanding features in the range, and Ridge has made a small amount of Chardonnay each vintage for many decades. In recent years the portfolio has expanded considerably. Newer additions include a Lytton Estate Rosé, a limited-release Mendocino Falanghina, and a trio of Rhône-variety white wines from Adelaida Vineyard in Paso Robles. The renowned trio of vineyards, Monte Bello, Geyservillle and Lytton Springs account for the majority of Ridge's production, with the remainder coming from the estate's East Bench site and a number of key contract growers. Montebello is situated at around 800m (2600ft) above sea level in the Santa Cruz Mountains, a few miles south of San Jose. The history of the Monte Bello vineyard and winery dates back to the 1880s. All of the Bordeaux varieties are grown on the Monte Bello vineyard. Those plots that have been shown to provide the most ageworthy, complex wines go into the flagship wine, which bears the vineyard's name. The remaining parcels, which tend to produce relatively approachable, youthful wines, are earmarked for the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Blind tastings confirm the selection and the wines are blended over two sessions in the following February and May. Klein Cabernet Sauvignon is a barrel selection from a part of the estate planted by the Alsatian Pierre Klein in the late 1880s. The Estate Chardonnay also comes from the Monte Bello Estate vineyards. Geyserville is an estate...

This beauty is full-bodied, has a layered, seamless mouthfeel, no hard edges, and as I wrote in notes after tasting this, it’s a killer wine Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2019 Paderewski Vineyard is a bright, perfumed blend of co-fermented fruit: 53% Syrah, 18% Mataro, 11% Zinfandel, 8% Graciano, 7% Tempranillo and 3% Viognier. Medium ruby, the nose is bursting with wild berries, blood orange and floral aromas. The medium-bodied, finely textured palate is notably restrained, fresh and minerally, a departure from the bolder styles of warmer vintages in the last decade, and it finishes long and uplifted. Drink it on the earlier side for its fragrant, pretty fruits. Vinous: Saturated magenta. Highly perfumed, spice-accented red and blue fruits, botanical herbs, incense, potpourri and a hint of smokiness on the nose. Displays vibrant, spice-tingled blueberry, cherry cola, cassis and exotic spice flavors and seamless texture. Turns firmer and echoes the spice and floral notes on the strikingly persistent finish, which features harmonious tannins and lingering blue fruit character. It is known for its portfolio of red blends produced from the key Rhône varieties: Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. The estate was planted at the end of the 1980s with a majority of vines now over 40 years of age. Planted throughout an undulating landscape the vineyards are located on slopes at an altitude of approximately 1200 feet (365 meters).Saxum's portfolio now features a collection of proprietary cuvées. Medium ruby-colored and semi-opaque, the 100% varietal 2017 Grenache is brilliant, ranking with the finest I've tasted to date from this estate. Beautiful kirsch, blackberries, ground herbs, flowers, and savory spice notes all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, powerful yet graceful Grenache that has fine tannins, beautiful balance, no hard edges, and a great finish. It has richness as well as elegance and will cruise for over a decade.
