Producer: Vina Sastre Vintage: 2019 Size: 750ml ABV: 14.5% Varietal: Tempranillo Country/Region: Spain, Ribera del Duero Dark berries punctuated with Thai basil and cocoa establish a deep dark core. A surprisingly refreshing midpalate, like biting into the juicy red center of a ripe peach, offsets spice and medium tannins. Producer Information Viña Sastre is an iconic, family-run winery located in the heart of the Ribera del Duero, near Burgos in the town of La Horra, which is one of the most respected villages in the D.O. The village of La Horra is famous for making the powerful, distinctively structured reds from old vine Tempranillo, grown near the Duero river. Jesús Sastre is the winemaker and vineyard manager whose intuitive philosophies and winemaking talents have been a driving force of the winery since 2002, following the passing of his brother Pedro. The Sastre family have been grape growers in La Horra at least since their great-grandfather’s days, giving Jesús an unparalleled knowledge of the vineyards in his region. Jesús’ grandfather, Severiano, was a founding member of the local Asunción cooperative, and his father, Rafael, started the Sastre winery in 1992 at the urging of sons Pedro and Jesus, making 1992 the first vintage of Viña Sastre. The family-owned vineyards are mostly in the villages of La Horra and Roa, with the average vine age being more than 60 years, all trained in the traditional goblet method. Only vineyards planted prior to 1960 are considered old by the family and are destined for the single-vineyard wines. Although he does not identify himself with any particular dogma, Jesús Sastre is committed to organic farming and biodynamic agriculture principles and he has never used chemical fertilizers or pesticides in his vineyards in his 30 years at the winery. Sastre works in a naturally privileged area for organic farming, with Ribera del Duero’s low temperatures in the winter and at night, and characteristic high altitudes (around 800m) providing large temperature variations between day and night. Pruning is done in accordance with moon cycles as it has always been done in his area. He also rarely uses copper in the vineyard because it is not good for earthworms. Sastre’s wines are classic Ribera del Duero style: with one foot solidly planted in the tradition...

Producer Information Fattoria Castello di Volpaia is a wine estate in the village of Volpaia in Chianti Classico. It is particularly known for its red wines featuring the Sangiovese grape variety. The Castello began life in the 11th Century as part of a fortified village on the border between the territories of Florence and Siena. The production of wine here was first documented in 1172. Raffaello Stianti, a leading Italian printer and bookbinder, purchased the Volpaia estate and two-thirds of the village in 1966. In 1972, he gave it to his daughter and her husband as a wedding gift, and Volpaia remains in the ownership of the Mascheroni-Stianti family. The organically-farmed estate extends to 370 hectares (914 acres), of which 46 hectares (114 acres) are planted with vines. Grapes are picked by hand into small boxes to ensure minimal damage before reaching the winery. The winery facilities are built within the village's structures – there are fermentation tanks in abandoned church buildings. Stainless steel pipes known as the "wineduct" connect these buildings at the top of the village with several barrel cellars at the bottom. The red grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with automated punchdowns. Once fermented, the grapes are left for further maceration. Castello di...

Intense with subtle hints of oak and dried fruit. Balanced with a characteristic taste of almonds and hints of liquorice. Producer Information Duca di Salaparuta is a Sicilian wine group based in Casteldaccia in the province of Palermo. It has three main brands: the titular Duca di Salaparuta, the value-driven Corvo range, and the Marsala estate Cantine Florio. The Duca di Salaparuta label is a collection of premium wines, mostly classified as Sicilia IGT. Grapes are sourced from three separate estates around the island – SuorMarchesa in Riesi near the centre, Risignolo in Salemi in the west and Vajasindi on the slopes of Mount Etna towards the east coast. The flagship of the Duca di Salaparuta portfolio is the Duca Enrico, a varietal Nero d'Avola. After a hand pick in the vineyard, grapes are destemmed and macerated for approximately ten days. It spends 18 months aging in barrel prior to another 18 months of aging in the cellar in bottle before release. The white counterpart of the portfolio is the Bianca di Valguarnera, an oak-fermented Insolia. Other notable wines include the Nawàri - a varietal Pinot Nero and the Ala - a dessert-style red infused with morello cherry leaves. The Corvo label also has its origins in the creation of the company in 1824, and consists of a selection of value wines under the Terre Siciliane IGT classification. Cantine Florio, founded in 1833 in the town of Marsala, focuses on Marsala wine, sweet and fortified wines including Passito di Pantelleria, and sweet Moscato spumante. The original company was founded in 1824 by Don Guiseppe Alliata di Villafranca, and remained under the ownership of the family until 1960, when it was bought by the regional government of Sicily. It was then acquired in 2000 by ILLVA di Saronno, who created the Duca di Salaparuta group.
