Producer: Domaine de la Grange des Pères Vintage: 2017 Size: 1.5L ABV: 14.5% Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvedre, Syrah Country/Region: France, Languedoc-Roussillon An expressive and spicy wine with a nice fleshy quality, power, and elegant tannins on the palate. This outstanding wine has excellent ageing potential. Producer Information Domaine de la Grange des Pères is a star producer in the Languedoc region of France, which produces small quantities of two of the most sought-after and expensive wines in the region. The small amounts available on export markets often sell out as soon as, or even before, shipments arrive. The domaine was established in 1989 by the late founder Laurent Vaillé who repurposed land acquired by his grandather in the 1950s. The domaine overlooks the Hérault river, just south of the town of Aniane, close to Mas de Daumas Gassac. The land is rich in limestone, boulders, and glacial scree and required a great deal of dynamiting and bulldozing to produce an ideal terroir. Vaillé already had a solid track record, having worked with Coche-Dury in Meursault, Gérard Chave in Hermitage, and Eloi Dürrbach at Domaine Trévallon in Provence. Moreover, he sourced cuttings of the highest quality from the last two estates to plant nine hectares (22 acres) of red grapes and a single hectare (2.5 acres) of white. In all, the domaine covers 13 hectares (32 acres). Yields are very low and total production per year is only 2500 to 3000 cases (around 27,000 liters). Organic and biodynamic methods are followed, though the vineyard is not certified. Two wines are made under the IGP de l'Hérault classification. The red is mostly made from Syrah and Mourvèdre, with smaller proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Counoise. The varieties are vinified separately and aged separately in 228-liter barriques, and blended when fully finished, before settling and bottling. The use of Cabernet Sauvignon means the wine cannot be labeled as Languedoc AOC/AOP. The white wine is based on Roussanne with around 10 percent each of Marsanne and Chardonnay. The varieties are fermented separately, then blended for malolactic fermentation and aging in 600-liter demi-muid barrels.

The palate, however, focuses on mellow notes of fresh red apple. The body is slender, refreshing and has a juicy, dry finish. Producer Information The origin of the winemaking family Sparr goes back to 1680, as Jean Sparr was born. Under the influence of François Pierre Sparr in 1785 the vineyards were increased. Generations later, Charles Sparr developed the business, increasing the activities on the area of trade and regarding wine ageing. His son Pierre took the succession at the age of 20. His distinct sense for business made him a pioneer of the “estate bottling” of wines in Alsace. His motto was: “invest, progress and maintain”. During WWII Sigolsheim and its vineyards have been completely destroyed. With a lot of courage and obstinacy Pierre Sparr rebuilt one of Alsace’s most beautiful and prestigious Domaines. His sons René and Charles contributed to the enlargement of the vineyards and the development of the European markets which gave a new dimension to the company. Nowadays, with the help of the 9th generation, the aim is still to perpetuate tradition, passion and emotion.

On the palate it is very elegant, rich and full-bodied. The finish is quite delicate, opulent and long. Producer Information Maison Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey is a Burgundy producer based in Chassagne-Montrachet, in the Côte de Beaune subregion. It is known for its fine Chardonnay wines, and has most of its vineyard holdings in Saint-Aubin. The estate was established in 2005 by husband-and-wife team Pierre-Yves Colin and Catherine Morey, both children of esteemed Burgundy winemakers. Colin had been winemaker at his family's winery since 1995 and in 2001 started a négociant business with his wife. In 2005, he left the family estate to establish his own label with his six-hectare (15-acre) share – the rest of the Colin vineyards remained with his three siblings (Caroline, Joseph and Damien, who run Domaine Marc Colin). Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey has holdings in several premier cru sites in Saint-Aubin and Chassagne-Montrachet including Chatèniere, Champlots, Remilly, Chenevottes and Caillerets. On top of this, the domaine buys grapes to make wines from several grand cru vineyards, including Bâtard-Montrachet and Corton-Charlemagne. The estate predominantly makes Chardonnay, but also produces a small amount of Pinot Noir from Saint-Aubin and Santenay. In the cellar, Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey does not employ battonage but favors lengthy lees contact and barrel aging. The wines are bottled without filtration and often without fining.
