It has fine dusty tannins, intense blackberry fruits and a dark-licorice aftertaste. Acidity keeps the wine fruity and fresh although with those firm tannins, it will need time. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2015 Vintage Port Quinta da Roeda is a field blend aged for 18 months in French oak. It comes in with 97 grams per liter of residual sugar. This single-quinta Porto was seen as a tank sample, out of barrel and the final blend when tasted. It was set to be bottled in a couple of weeks after tasting and should be in the marketplace by the time this article appears. Not overly concentrated, it is still seductive because its fruit is fresh, flavorful and lifted. This does show some ability to flesh out in the glass and put on some weight, but it likely won't ever be remarkable because of its modest concentration. That said, its gorgeously flavorful fruit will always make it appealing. The fruit succeeds because of that lift and freshness. As it airs, the tannins become rather more assertive, too, but this will still be approachable on the younger side. Wine Spectator: This starts with a generous feel, offering blueberry and plum reduction notes, but zips up nicely through the back end, picking up graphite and açai berry accents. Producer Information Croft is a leading Port house releasing a full range of styles, though it is particularly known both for vintage Port production, alongside a range of more innovative products, including the first rosé Port. It is the oldest business still active as a Port wine producer; the company has its roots as a wine merchant founded in York, northern England in 1588 by Henry Thompson. By 1647, it had acquired cellars in Bordeaux, and on the journeys out to wine regions was trading several other commodities such as textiles; during the 1650s it had begun trading with Portugal. The Croft family married into the firm in the 1730s, and the first vintage Croft Port was the 1781. In 1911, the Gilbey family took control. In the 1960s and '70s, the firm diversified into brandy and Sherry. By this time it was owned by IDV,...

Producer: Quinta das Marias Vintage: 2019 Size: 750ml ABV: 13% Varietal: Encruzado Country/Region: Portugal, Dao Wine without stabilization, subject to create natural deposit. Contains sulfites. Producer Information In the 80s I managed the subsidiary of the Zurich Insurance Group in Portugal. During my frequent business trips throughout the country I grew very fond of the Dão region around Viseu. In 1991, my wife Elisabeth and I bought four hectares of abandoned land and a house, which resembled a ruin more than a habitable dwelling, in Oliveira do Conde. We called the farm «Quinta das Marias» as Elisabeth and our three daughters, Ester, Isabel and Julia, all have Maria as one of their names. Firstly, we employed António Coelho Lopes as our caretaker, bought a tractor and planted two hectares of new vines. Thanks to the purchase of additional, bordering land we have since reached twelve hectares. It was important to us that we were not only investors: we wanted to work with our hands and create wine ourselves. With the aid of Eng. António Narciso and hard work, I taught myself to become the «Winemaker» of Quinta das Marias.Legal requirements oblige us to only use grapes of our own production. These grapes are looked after with the greatest care, from the first pruning in winter right up to the harvest. From the very start, there was a clear determination and obligation to only produce wines of the highest quality. We believe that they should represent the Dão’s typical elegance and therefore withstand tough global competition. In 2012, the famous Portuguese wine journalist Rui Falcão wrote in the magazine «Fugas» about Quinta das Marias: «The story of the family Eckert shows eloquently how passion overrides reason, how a dream commands life and how love and passion can overcome all obstacles … In no time Quinta das Marias reached the top of the hierarchy of the Dão and serves as a great reference and role model in the region.

Reviews: James Suckling: It presents a deep red colour. Its aroma is intense and complex, which dominates plum, cassis, resin, cedar and cloves and nutmeg. It is still highlight aromas of violet and some chocolate, always in perfect harmony with discreet wood, well integrated and excellent quality. In the mouth reveals great elegance, being remarkable its volume, balanced acidity, excellent quality tannins and black fruit aromas, spices and floral. Very long and great harmony. Producer Information Casa Ferreirinha is the table wine operation allied to the Ferreira Port house. It is best known for making one of Portugal's most esteemed wines – the rare and iconic Barca Velha. It is located in the Douro, and was founded by Bernardo Ferreira in the 18th century. Only 18 vintages of Barca Velha have been released since the inaugural vintage in 1952. It is made from a blend of native grape varieties, including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinto Cão, that are selected from vineyards at varying altitudes in the Douro Valley. Barca Velha is matured for 16 months in new French oak barrels. The finished wine is then blended from a selection of the best barrels, then bottled and aged for at least five years before release. In years when Barca Velha is not produced, Casa Ferreirinha produces Reserva Especial instead. This wine is produced with the same vinification methods and maturation time as Barca Velha – the decision on what to label the final red blend is not made until the wine has bottle matured its full five years. Only 16 vintages of Reserva Especial have been produced since 1960.

Producer: Quinta das Bageiras Vintage: 2020 Size: 750ml ABV: 14% Varietal: Rare White Blend Country/Region: Portugal, Bairrada Lemon yellow colour and aromas of flowers and honey. The palate is soft with wild honey flavours, salt, some wood, and caramel. Perfect balance. Producer Information That's how the population of Fogueira named the project I created in 1989. Fausto was my paternal grandfather, whose vineyards I collected with others from my maternal grandfather to establish the first wine company in Bairrada in over 20 years. With the paramount support of my father Abel, 12 hectares of vineyard that until then produced wine sold in bulk were transformed into wines bottled with our brand. Another 16 hectares were later added to the original vineyard area, always in the best Bairrada terroir. My belief was a simple one: I wanted the production of our wines to be accomplished through traditional methods, without ignoring the constant developments observed in the fields of viticulture and oenology. That is why, for example, all our grapes are handpicked, our red wines are produced in lagares without added yeasts and why our sparkling wines have no residual sugar. I believe quality means nothing without identity. Therefore, we respect wine as it respects us and we always devote ourselves to it as a family, with a passion that has lasted for three generations.

There are characteristics of dried candied fruit and nuts on the nose and palate. Concentrated flavors of dried pear apricot cherry and spice combine into this seamless package. Producer Information Quinta do Noval, established in 1715, is one of the only Port houses to be located in the heart of the Douro Valley of Portugal. It is perhaps best known for its Nacional Vintage Ports, the 1963 is considered by many critics to be the greatest Port ever made. Quinta do Noval is also one of the only houses that is named after its most famed vineyard, in this case the Quinta do Noval. The majority of the vineyards at the quinta are planted with the noble varieties of the Douro: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Cao. These grapes do well on the mix of schist and clay soil types found here. There was a large scale replanting of the vineyards in 1994, and each plot was planted with a variety that best suited that soil, altitude and exposition. Historically, the vineyards had been planted in blended plots; however this practice is dying out in the Douro, as the plantings become more specific to individual terroir. In the heart of the Quinta do Noval vineyard is a small plot of ungrafted vines that were lucky enough to avoid the devastation of phylloxera in the 19th Century. These grapes are used in the Nacional wines. Alongside the production of fine Ruby and Tawny ports, the house also produces an unfortified style of Douro wine, as well as the newest introduction, the Noval Black, a Port that is made to be drunk young and fresh, without age or decanting. Since 1993, the managing director has been Chris Seely who is also in charge of a host of vineyards within Europe, as part of the AXA Millesimes group. This investment group also owns estates such as Château Pichon-Longueville, Château Pibran as well as Disznóko in Hungary.

On the palate it has a powerful attack, with a lively acidity, firm and well present tannins, wild bush and red berry notes, with an extremely long finish and great concentration. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2019 Vintage Port Quinta do Seixo is a blend of 35% Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Franca, 25% from a field blend and Sousão for the rest. It was bottled in April 2021 with 100 grams of residual sugar. This has a firm finish to go with its sweet edge and classic flavors. The blue fruits are in charge, but they are laced with herbs and have nuances of some cistus on the nose. The controlled power makes this easy to approach now, but it has the wherewithal to hold and age well too. It expanded and developed when tasted again the next day. It tightened a little too. This is lovely in most respects. The question now is how much it might improve and develop along the way. I doubt it will be the best-aging Port, but it will certainly hold a reasonable time, maybe more than indicated. James Suckling: Rich and concentrated character with toasted almonds, baking spices, overturned earth and a backbone of ripe black cherries and cassis. Broad and opulent, with a full to medium body and waves of fine tannins building on the plate. Attractive concentration and length with nutty undertones in the finish. Producer Information Sandeman is a Port producer based in the Vila Nova de Gaia in Porto. It makes a wide variety of Ports, ranging from Ruby and Tawny to a whole host of vintage expressions. The house was founded in 1790 by George Sandeman, who started out selling Port and Sherry in London before relocating to Portugal in 1811. The great finishing kick leaves an invigorating feel, not easy for Port to do Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2019 Vintage Port is a field blend aged for 18 months in old wood vats. It was bottled May 4, 2021, and has 100 grams of residual sugar. It was in bottle only a bit more than two months when tasted, but it seems quite brilliant, even so. Very concentrated, it adds controlled power and coats the palate. Tasted with some other 2019s, this certainly stood out for both concentration and power. It touches all the bases in terms of expressive fruit and structure, finishing dry and seriously. It seemed balanced enough to drink young, but that would be a mistake. For one thing, it steadily tightened as it aired out. It also increasingly showed gorgeous eucalyptus-laced aromatics. Two days later, it was notably more astringent. Four days later, it was very firm on the finish and better overall. In fact, that was a far better showing than on day one. This is plainly built for the long haul. I would expect nothing less from a fine Noval Vintage Port. It became more focused and precise as well. This needs the rest of this decade, at least, in the cellar to show better. Then it will develop well for decades and hold indefinitely. Frankly, it won't show everything it has in even 10 years, where I have the "start drinking" window, so if you have a lot more patience, that would be useful. Producer Information Quinta do Noval, established in 1715, is one of the only Port houses to be located in the heart of the Douro Valley of Portugal. It is perhaps best known for its Nacional Vintage Ports, the 1963 is considered by many critics to be the greatest Port ever made.Quinta do Noval is also one of the only houses that is named after its most famed vineyard, in this case the Quinta do Noval. Alluring juniper and alder edges underscore the fruit. This stretches out nicely, with floral and mint details running through the lengthy and refined finish. Reviews: Wine Advocate: The 2015 Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port is a field blend aged for 18 months in used French oak vats. It comes in with 103 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is the first look in bottle, after the original was seen last June as a tank sample in Porto. It is very much a creature of the vintage. Like most 2015s, this is on the lighter side in the mid-palate, but also like most, it is fresh and lifted, refined and graceful. It is the type of wine that doesn't hit you over the head but becomes ever more appealing as it sits in the glass. It's all about finesse and elegance. Suddenly, you realize how much you like it. After some aeration, it adds to its mid-palate refinement the dry, tight and steely edge it had in Porto. Compared to last June, it is oddly more expressive now (I find that they tend to close down after bottling and shipping), opening nicely with some air. It does eventually close down more, but it drinks well again the next day, showing very good balance. When all three of the Fladgate group wines I re-evaluated for this issue (Croft, Fonseca Guimaraens and this) were tasted again the next day, this was plainly the best, beautifully balanced and lingering nicely on the finish. It does everything well. Wine Spectator: Fleshy and inviting in feel, with enticing warm plum and blackberry cobbler notes backed by cocoa, black licorice and fruitcake flavors. Fresh aromas of sour cherry, raspberry and redcurrant fruit with touches of rose petal and freshly cut mint. On the palate, it is a serious and complex vintage revealing ripe black fruit, pepper and a floral note which provides character. Producer Information Ramos Pinto is a Port House founded by Adriano Ramos Pinto in 1880. The house's aged Tawnies were historically the stars of the portfolio (and arguably still are), the rest of the lineup has caught up over the last few decades. The estate is made up of four different quintas. The flagship wine comes from the Quinta do Bom Retiro vineyard in the Pinhão parish of Cima Corgo. Pinto purchased this 62 hectare (153 acre) quinta in 1919, and 40-percent of the vineyard is still planted in the traditional way, with grape varieties mixed throughout the vineyards. The Urtiga vineyard, covering just 4ha (10 acres) is located next door. The other major estate is Ervamoira, at Touça in the Douro Superior. Pinto bought this vineyard in 1974 and broke new ground by planting in vertical rows up the slopes, and planting by variety based on the vineyard's soil types, rather than in the traditional mix. Nearby is Quinta dos Bon Areas, which was added to the portfolio in 1985. The vines here provide fresher, less-concentrated grapes than the other sites, which are typically used in blending. The Ramos Pinto portfolio covers most of the typical Port styles, including white, tawny and ruby variants as well as several aged tawnies and LBVs. The house also makes some top vintage Ports, and red and white Douro table wines. The company became part of the Roederer group in 1990.

It has a nice backbone, showing tight and a bit hard, but its relatively rich fruit counters with classic flavors. Many are pointing to Douro Superior for the best Ports in 2015, but this Cima Corgo offering has lovely fruit as well as the good concentration to balance the structure. Following this, Quinta do Crasto has been producing Port and table wine under its own label since 1994. The portfolio includes LBV and Vintage Port, plus a range of table wines under the Quinta do Crasto and Crasto labels. The estate has 70 hectares (175 acres) of south-facing terraced vineyards located in the heart of the Cima Corgo. These are carved into the schist bedrock on the hills above the Douro river, reaching altitudes of around 2000ft (600m) above sea level. The vineyard terraces are planted to a host of classic Port varieties, in traditional mixed plantings. The winemaking at Quinta do Crasto combines traditional foot-treading lagares with state-of-the-art temperature-controlled equipment. As well as the quinta itself, the company also has offices in downtown Porto.

By this time it was owned by IDV, which later became Diageo. In 2001, the...

Producer: Quinta da Fonte Souto Vintage: 2018 Size: 750ml ABV: 14.5% Varietal: Portuguese White Blend Country/Region: Portugal, Alentejo A blend of local grapes part barrel-fermented in older oak, this deliciously intriguing Portuguese white offers stone fruit, citrus and floral aromas lifted by a salty tang and mineral freshness on the palate. Producer Information This is our family’s first property outside the Douro region. Quinta da Fonte Souto is in the Portalegre subregion of the Alto Alentejo in southern Portugal. Close to the São Mamede range (1,025 metres), the property benefits from the area’s altitude with its cooler microclimate in sharp contrast to the Alentejo region’s typically hot and dry conditions. Yields are low due to the schist and granite soils, which are less fertile than those found in the flat and rolling terrain which characterizes the majority of the Alentejo. There are 207 hectares on the property, of which 43 are planted with vines. The principal grape varieties are Aragonês, Alfrocheiro, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The property has a substantial chestnut grove, from which its name is derived — ‘souto’ refers to a wooded area planted with chestnut trees. Furthermore, the property has a large forested area amounting to 100 hectares, a third of which is covered with cork oaks, very much a feature of the Alentejo landscape.

It comes in with 106 grams per liter of residual sugar. Of the Symington group this issue, nothing is more intensely flavorful as this. It is certainly a step up on its Bomfim sibling this issue in concentration. Some in this set of Symington releases are equally perfumed. Some might be equally or more powerful. Nothing is more expressive except the Vesúvio, which is a bit of an outlier in this group. With violets up front and plums on the finish, it is delicious and sexy, until the h ammer falls. There is plenty of power too. The next day, it shuts down. A few days later, it was drinking fairly well. This is one of the two Ports being released now, en primeur, by the Symingtons (the other being the Vesúvio). The question here will be when this comes into better balance. I`d sock it away until nearly the end of this decade, but it might be approachable sooner. There were 510 cases produced, a bit more than Bomfim, but still pretty small.
